Long‐distance commuting (LDC) is an increasingly relevant strategy of labor mobility worldwide and is therefore key to understanding the structure and dynamics of labor markets. However, little is known about the effect that LDC has on the labor market equilibrium of host territories. This paper addresses this gap for the case of Chile. While LDC is a useful strategy for improving salary and employment on a national scale, our results show a negative effect for residents in host territories (on a local scale), particularly when LDC results in commuters with similar characteristics to residents competing for the same jobs. We study the value of adding flexibility to Transmission Expansion Planning (TEP) projects from the perspective of a social planner using real options. Due to the deregulation of electricity markets, TEP projects currently face multiple uncertainties. These uncertainties often cause traditional project valuation methods to recommend sub-optimal investment decisions. Additionally, to incorporate the effects of uncertainties on the valuation of TEP projects, current literature rely on some critical simplifications that do not fit well with the real operations of a power market. This paper models the power market in a realistic way by combining an equilibrium model, to assess the power market equilibrium that the TEP project will generate, with a valuation model based on real options, to incorporate the value of flexibility. The methodology is applied to determine the value of adding capacity expansion flexibility to a portion of the rigid TEP project that connects the main two interconnected systems in Chile since 2018. Our results show that, in this case, adding flexibility increases the net expected social welfare by $14.03 million. Several sensitivity analyses confirm that this flexibility has more value when uncertainty is higher and/or investment costs are lower. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the efficiency produced by long-distance commuting (LDC) as an adjustment mechanism between local labor markets, the impact that it has on the equilibrium of labor markets has not been studied in depth. This paper uses the case of Chile, since in the last two decades the LDC has increased its importance as a strategy of labor mobility for workers in this country. We demonstrate, both theoretically and empirically, that LDC generates wage differences in the labor markets that receive commuters, as a function of the market equilibrium of these workers' place of origin. These differences are not only related to labor productivity and/or employment, but also to the wage expectations of commuters in their place of origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
