Abstract

The article considers the capacity of an elephant for self-reflection and mentalize, based of observation at an elephant training camp in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It is suggested that functional magnetic resonance imaging can be used in determining the neural networks governing this capacity to mentalize. A discussion on metacognition and the concept of the theory of the mind is presented.
