Abstract

The article examines how a generation of activist African American teachers at Burke Industrial School in Charleston, South Carolina made some challenges that led to the civil rights movement. It explores the hidden transcripts that activist teachers crafted in the interstices of the segregated schools in the state. It also investigates the evidences from autobiographies and secondary sources suggesting that school activities were practiced in other African American schools as well.
