The North Caucasus economic region is an area where all Russian agricultural crops are cultivated, but at the same time it is one of the most difficult regions in terms of soil and climatic conditions: from semi-desert areas to mountainous ones. The district is an important food base of Russia, a supplier of grain, sunflower, sugar beet, vegetables and fruits, grapes and livestock products. At the same time in the region there are big problems of effective and rational use of land, which is associated with both soil-climatic, anthropogenic and organizational. Of the 17 million hectares of arable land in the region, over 9 million hectares (57%) are eroded and potentially eroded. The article provides an analysis of the use of agricultural land in the region and proposals to improve efficiency based on environmental requirements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
