The article focuses on the Gloriavale Christian Community, a religious group which moved to the West Coast bush from Northern Canterbury, New Zealand in 1990 to carve out a dairying enterprise to support its self-contained community of 450. Tucked away from the rest of the world, the group resides on the banks of Lake Haupiri on the South Island's West Coast. Hopeful Christian founded the group which has enterprises that have become important to the West Coast regional economy. It owns a 50:50 sharemilking contract on a property further up the valley.
