CANBERRA has deployed a Germanium Spectroscopic Portal (GSP) in the Port of Antwerp at a Central Examination Station (CES). The GSP will be used during secondary screening of cargo to identify any radiological materials present, particularly those that may have triggered an alarm during primary screening. Also in use at the CES will be a high energy X-ray radiography system, located roughly 80 meters from the GSP. The background fluctuation caused by this type of system can be problematic for passive radiation screening systems such as those based on large scintillators. Test measurements were performed with the GSP and a mobile X-ray radiography system at various distances to explore the spectroscopic effects of the X-ray system on the GSP. Even in the closest geometry tested - 15 meters distance - the GSP spectra show little significant effect from the nearby X-ray. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
