Asian international students in Canadian higher education have long caused anxiety and predicament for domestic (white) students, faculty, and staff. This article considers the contending and multiple timelines in and against which international students (Chinese, South Asians, or otherwise) operate. In particular, this article considers how these students time-trick the neoliberal university by examining reports and advocacy around three temporal events: extensions, cheating and suicide. Ultimately, the authors seek to problematize the moral panic over decreasing admission standards and academic integrity associated with the admission of Asian international students within the Canadian higher education system. Despite sexuality education in school contexts being a highly politicized and ideologically fueled conversation, discussions of the specific needs of disabled students are often silenced, in particular for those who might be accessing special education programming. In this article, we provide a call to action to explicate the crucial importance of addressing both ableist attitudes and constructions embedded within conversations of childhood sexuality and sexuality education, as well as policy and curriculum change to create more inclusive sexuality education approaches for disabled students and learners in Canadian provinces and territories. Many Canadian provinces do not mention disability or accommodations for disabled learners in their sexuality education curricula and all provincial curricula do not currently meet requirements set by international governing human rights policies. As such, this article aims to bring to attention the different ways in which current school-based sexuality education is failing the human rights of disabled learners in Canadian schools and how sexuality education can be rethought through a social justice framework to ensure that the needs of all learners and that systems of inequality, such as ableism and heterosexism, are addressed in school contexts. Specific recommendations for policy and professional practice are provided to direct educators, policy-makers, and curriculum developers towards providing more inclusive sexuality education. Aim: The isolating public health measures mandated during the COVID‐19 pandemic had complex influences on the lives and body image of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer individuals (LGBTQ+) in Canada. The aim of this study was to explore the impact the COVID‐19 pandemic had on body image for LGBTQ+ Canadians. Methods: The qualitative research process was guided by queer theory and poststructuralism and consisted of an online survey with open‐ended questions and semi‐structured virtual interviews. A total of 70 self‐identifying LGBTQ+ individuals completed the survey, and eight individuals partook in the interviews. Responses were analysed using Foucauldian discourse analysis. Results: Four major discursive considerations were found to shape participants' experiences, including, (a) time for reflection, (b) time away from social surveillance, (c) time to work on oneself, and (d) time to (dis)connect. Woven through these considerations were social discourses of hetero‐cis‐normativity, healthism, and resistance. Discussion: The COVID‐19 pandemic was a 'queer time' for LGBTQ+ people. Competing social discourses created complex and often contradictory meanings of bodies and body image. COVID‐19‐related self‐isolation was for some participants a reprieve from constant body monitoring while for others it was a time of continued pressure to embody body ideals. On July 3, 2016, the Toronto Pride parade began its procession down Toronto streets. Before it would end, Black Lives Matter – Toronto organizers would disrupt the event with a protest. This collective of Black queer and trans organizers demanded the attention of Toronto Pride and its participants in a manner which challenges the normalization of state-presence and involvement in Pride, Toronto Pride's own anti-Black histories, as well as myths surrounding the multiculturalism of Canada's society and government. Black Lives Matter – Toronto's use of the Black Lives Matter global network, its own membership's diaspora positionalities, and its deployment of protest within a homonationalist context all work to forward a Black queer diaspora and geopolitical critique of homonormativity and anti-Blackness enacted and practiced by mainstream gay spaces, like Toronto Pride, and settler-colonial states, like Canada. Embracing this disruption as theoretical and deploying similar methodological disruptions within the text, this project reveals that Black Lives Matter – Toronto and their protest function as transnational resistance against an international project of anti-Blackness at the same time it operates in a distinct local-national context. This exploratory autoethnographic study, undertaken by a White straight cisgender child and youth care practitioner, seeks to understand the experiences of LGBTQI+ newcomer, refugee, and immigrant students in Canada. It highlights the nuances of creating safe spaces for young people who experience harm due to the intersections of systemic racism, xenophobia, transphobia, and homophobia. The overarching finding of this study reveals a culture of silence. Queer newcomer, refugee, and immigrant youth in Canada are often reluctant to disclose or explore their queerness due to their fears of discrimination and violence. This fear exists notwithstanding the pride Canada takes in its efforts to protect LGBTQI+ rights. Inspired by findings from interviews with two women, one who supports LGBTQI+ newcomers, refugees, and immigrants to Canada, and one who researches policy affecting all Canadian refugee experiences, I utilized a self-reflexive deep-dive approach to learn about the events and policies that have shaped LGBTQI+ newcomer, refugee, and immigrant students' access to postsecondary education in Canada. Central findings in this study point to barriers emerging from homonationalism, colonization, religion, culture, race, White-centred gay-straight alliances in schools, and immigration policies pertaining to sexual orientation and gender identity expression (SOGIE). An essay is presented which explores the eco-erotic themes of the poems of Canadian author Emily Pauline Johnson particularly her selection of the canoe as a poetic subject. Topics discussed include the depiction of Indigenous self-determination and sexuality in her erotic canoe poetry, the association of the canoe with Canadian nationalism, and the queer studies of her poems.

This article analyses five public consultation meetings about revisions to an LGBTQ-related school board policy on unceded Coast Salish territory in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. These meetings focused largely on the new provision that students in publicly funded schools be allowed to use the washroom that corresponds with their gender identity. Almost all of the objections to the policy revisions were articulated by parents of non-queer, or not openly queer students. We found that these parental concerns centred around two perennial issues in Canadian educational studies; namely, how schools regulate students' gender identities and expressions, and the role of the state in publicly funded schooling. We conclude by drawing upon emerging literature on best practices for trans youth in schools to offer alternative visions for how these issues can be better addressed with the public, and parents in particular. This article argues that a queer perspective on Asian Canadian studies can open new inquiries and simultaneously trouble the centrality of family, generation, and community in documenting and examining racialized minority and diasporic groups. By rethinking these analytical concepts through queer possibilities and interventions, research into Asian Canada can become more inclusive and transgressive, and can foreground alternative queer kinships which exceed heteropatriarchal bloodlines, filial relations, and co-ethnic singularities. Putting forth counter-histories of racialized and diasporic sexualities, this article builds upon and complements archival research on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Asian Canadians, and turns to artists and cultural workers who offer rich historical and contemporary representations of queer Asian Canada. This article examines how queer persons negotiate the technologies of health deployed to shape sexual citizenship, especially in relation to body size. Beginning with the claim that fatness is always already queered, the authors bring Jasbir Puar's concept of homonationalism into conversation with Samantha Murray's argument that fat persons are positioned as failed citizens. The authors illustrate how fat embodied subjects confront problematics of belonging through analysing in-depth interviews conducted for a research project that investigated how members of queer communities come up against, are affected by and resist body image ideals and body management expectations. The article discusses the approach to minority identity in Canadian literary studies, with specific reference to the work of Andy Quan, a poet and fiction writer. The author questions the centrality of national narratives in the analysis of minority subject writing by putting queer and Asian perspectives simultaneously to work.

The travelling and appropriation of queer theory by francophone feminists in Quebec have been particularly long and arduous, prompting an inquiry into not only the reasons for this delay, but also into the elements that ultimately allowed for an integration of queer theory among francophone feminists. Combining tools from social movement literature on diffusion (brokerage, frames, repertoire of contention, etc.) and a political theory approach, this article divides the integration of queer theory among francophone feminists into two moments. In the first instance, activists and academic feminists have generally received queer theory with considerable criticism, which we have regrouped into 3 axes: 1) the deconstruction of women and lesbians as political subjects; 2) the investment in the symbolic aspects of politics, to the detriment of material relations and structures of power, and 3) the erasure of lesbian specificity and the absence of male privilege examination. In the second moment, the work of the Pink Panthers–a radical queer group–allows for frame bridging and the use of a recognisable repertoire of collective action to address two out of the three axes of criticism. This article suggests that the process of brokerage creates a crack in the wall of resistance that will quickly become a space for the insertion and integration, even if still conflictual, of queer theory into francophone feminism. In this article we explore some of the affective and ethical dimensions that we have faced as parent academic-activists seeking to understand and undo some of the structural transphobia that currently exists in Canadian society. Informed by critical feminist, critical race and black feminist thought, trans* scholarship, queer theory, and anti-oppression analysis, we discuss how our academic-activism assumes complex configurations of privilege and vulnerability. This article examines how notions of 'child' and 'childhood' are produced in relation to recent early childhood policies in Ontario, Canada. It centers on an ongoing shift from Foucauldian disciplinary societies to Deleuzian control societies where it is argued that early childhood subjects (researchers, students, educators, administrators, and parents) are becoming less confined to specific spaces and tasks and are more controlled by the flows of knowledge, information, and communication. Current public policy debates are used to explore how early childhood education (ece) is becoming increasingly aligned with neoliberal calls for privatization, corporatization, and marketization. For instance, evidence-based practices and quality control indicators are quickly replacing developmental norms that have traditionally normalized and abnormalized children. The consequences of these transformations are examined using queer theory as a critical lens to explore how the identities of ECE subjects are deeply implicated in social, cultural, political, and economic factors - influences that are changing as a result of the shift from discipline to control. The qBody project is a qualitative research study that aims to understand how students with “queer bodies” are impacted by heterosexism, transphobia, ableism, and fat phobia in Canadian physical education. Approximately 40 adults, who self-identified as a sexual minority, gender minority, having a physical disability, and/or socially undervalued body shape/size were interviewed about how physical education impacts their participation in, and alienation from, physical cultures later in life. This article situates the theoretical approach of the qBody project within the historical development of research into homophobia and lesbians in physical education and sport. Specifically, the article traces how postmodern theories of embodiment are transforming “lesbian studies in sport” into multidimensional studies of marginalization and normalcy—an area that might be referred to as “postmodern body studies.” [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article argues that queer poet Shane Rhodes was able to contests the conventional gay geographical imaginary while unsettling the identity of one of the most socially conservative regions in Canada, by placing Rhodes' queer persona within several key rural prairie spaces. The author further argues that Rhodes responds to the prevailing homogenous and heterocentric characterization of the prairies by interrupting the traditions of prairie literature and poetry as well as by resexualizing prairie culture in a non-normative way, by situating Rhode's poems included in his book of poetry "The Wireless Room" within contemporary cultural theories of prairie regionalism.

The article illuminates a poetics which challenges heteronormative and exclusionary discourses of citizenship by reading Hiromi Goto's poem "Body Politic/s" in dialogue with contemporary queer and multicultural theory. The author argues that Goto's poem offers both poetical and polemical intervention into the embodied effects of the discourses of racialization and sexualization as well as its combination in orientalism and the hermeneutics of citizenships within the context of Canadian public sphere.

This article explores how older Canadian LGBTQ+ persons' gender and sexual identities evolved over time and were influenced by language, role models, and significant others. We draw on data from a qualitative interview study with 30 LGBTQ+ older adults. We analyze our data thematically, finding three overarching themes, namely: a) Lacking language and role models, b) Drawn and pushed out of the closet, and c) Current fluidities and future concerns. Our participants reported that, earlier in life, they had lacked language or positive frameworks with which to make sense of their identities. Upon finding language and role models, all but one eventually came out or transitioned, often after consulting trusted others, experimenting in secret, leading double lives, and/or finding same-sex love. Many were fearful that as they aged, they might once again lose their abilities to openly claim their gender and sexual identities. The purpose of this study was to examine how older LGTBQ adults were portrayed in mainstream Canadian newspapers and popular magazines. Our sample included stories that were published in English between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017 in three national newspapers, 13 provincial newspapers, one national online news website, and the five most widely-read popular magazines whose readerships included or catered to the mature market. Our content and thematic analyses of our sample of 190 stories resulted in three overarching findings: a) older LGBTQ adults were largely invisible; b) older LGBTQ persons were often depicted as victims of historical and ongoing discrimination and social exclusion; and c) older LGBTQ individuals were frequently portrayed as extraordinary role models and icons who demonstrated resilience and had paved the way for the younger generations. We discuss our findings in light of the extant research and theorizing concerning the role of the media in reflecting, reproducing, and/or challenging dominant social norms and ideologies, including heterosexism, homophobia, and age-based prejudice., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc.
