In the current research we examined non-Black children's associations with targets who differed by both race and gender, with a focus on the role of categorization in informing children's biases. Children aged 5 to 12 years (N = 206; 109 boys, 97 girls; 55% White; 68% of household incomes > $75,000/year), recruited from a science museum in a large multicultural Canadian city, completed a child-friendly Implicit Association Test (IAT; Greenwald et al., 2003) that included own-gender Black and other-gender White targets. Children were randomly assigned to complete this IAT under one of three categorization conditions. When asked to categorize targets by gender as opposed to race, both girls and boys showed relatively more positive associations with own-gender Black targets over other-gender White targets. Children in a third, Ambiguous-Categorization (AC-IAT; Lipman et al., 2021) condition, which allowed for categorization by gender and/or race, were more likely to spontaneously categorize additional final trials primarily by gender (70%), suggesting that gender was the more salient social category. However, girls' and boys' biases in this condition differed, with girls showing relatively more positive associations with own-gender Black targets (Black girls > White boys) and boys showing relatively more positive associations with other-gender White targets (White girls > Black boys). In addition, the more boys and girls categorized by gender (over race) at the end of the task, the more they showed positive associations with own-gender Black targets over other-gender White targets. These findings provide insight into children's social categorization processes and biases toward targets who differ by race and gender.

The article draws on concepts from speculative design to explore an alternative educational group existing outside the boundaries of an accredited university. Inspired by the imaginative approach of speculative design, I propose a small-scale reading and discussion group as a pathway to explore possible futures open to aspects of humanities education. The concept aims to reposition elements of the humanities from within the degree-granting Canadian university space to engage the wider public through a network meant to ideally foster an interconnected community of learners. This rhizomatic network would provide avenues for those without the means, access, or desire to pursue post-secondary education in the humanities to engage in questions that are relevant to their lived experience. I use an inquiry-based model of learning to explore probable, plausible, and preferable futures for liberal arts education as a way to challenge some current modes of thinking and provoke further discussion and research.

This article critically considers the work being done to bring Indigenous Peoples, Knowledges, and perspectives into the dominant structures of engineering education in Canada. We use Gaudry and Lorenz's (2018. "Indigenization as Inclusion, Reconciliation, and Decolonization: Navigating the Different Visions for Indigenizing the Canadian Academy." "AlterNative: An International Journal of Indigenous PeoplesAlterNative" 14 (3): 218-227. doi:10.1177/1177180118785382) spectrum of Indigenization to evaluate self-reported contributions from 25 engineering programs and four engineering organizations. Findings show much of the work being done in Canada is in Indigenous Inclusion and Reconciliation Indigenization, with some Decolonial Indigenization. Efforts in reconciliation and decolonization are seen predominantly in integrated, grassroots initiatives, with institutional initiatives found largely in inclusion. We submit that a diversified strategy and decolonized policies are needed to achieve Decolonial Indigenization. The intention of this work is to create an ethical space where Indigenous and non-Indigenous engineering educators can listen to and learn from one another. Guided by "Etuaptmumk" (Two-Eyed Seeing), we can advance Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing in engineering education in Canada and around the world.

This article explores efforts to stimulate significant conversations through a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Community of Practice (CoP) amongst a diverse group of professors and professional staff in a College of Applied Arts and Technology in Ontario, Canada. Participants share their reflections on the formation of significant networks and the start of significant conversations through the founding of a SoTL CoP. These reflections suggest that conversations fostered were shaped by various trusted and trusting individuals within a significant network. This trust assumes different forms and is central to significant networks and significant conversations.

Based on a three-year research project in which outdoor and environmental education were embedded in classroom curricula, this paper considers learning story pedagogy and accompanying emotional elements often found in narratives. We draw on neuroscience research findings that support the importance of emotion in focusing attention and supporting memory. A detailed account of the E4E (Educating for Environment) university/school partnership project includes a description of the resulting documentation over three years. Comparison and analysis of the documentation are followed by four propositions for outdoor and environmental education practitioners' consideration.

The 1-year longitudinal study presented here examined the extent to which the ability to build phonologically specific lexical entries as a result of increasing vocabulary size predicts word reading via its impact on phonological awareness within and across languages in 62 emerging English (L1) and French (L2) Grade 1 children (M = 75.69 months, SD = 3.18) enrolled in an early French immersion program in Canada. Lexical specificity was assessed with a computerized word learning game in which children were taught new English (e.g., 'foal' and 'sole') and French (e.g., "bac" 'bin' and "bague" 'ring') word pairs contrasted by minimal phonological differences. The results revealed that the specificity of English words at the beginning of Grade 1 predicted English word reading at the end of Grade 1 and that this relationship was mediated by English phonological awareness at the beginning of Grade 1. French lexical specificity at the beginning of Grade 1 did not predict French word reading at the end of Grade 1. Notably, English lexical specificity at the beginning of Grade 1 also predicted French word reading at the end of Grade 1 and this relationship was mediated by English phonological awareness at the beginning of Grade 1. It is concluded that exposure to word pairs involving minimal phonological contrasts fosters phonological awareness, which in turn facilitates word reading within the L1 that then transfers to the L2.

Deepening Knowledge Project, through Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), undertook research within the Initial Teacher Education program to explore the relationships between teacher candidates and Aboriginal content. Our research question was, "Which strategies used within OISE's Central cohort are most powerful in increasing teacher candidates' willingness and readiness to incorporate Aboriginal knowledges and pedagogies into their classroom practice?" Data consisted of surveys administered to approximately 70 teacher candidates at three key points in their program as well as two rounds of interviews with five purposively selected participants. We found that teacher candidates most appreciated the inclusion of First Voice perspectives, in-depth instruction on current and historical events, and a continuous examination of privilege as means to prepare them for incorporating Aboriginal content into their future practice. While most students reported feeling more confident and willing to include Aboriginal perspectives near the end of their program, there are three commonly stated questions, reported on preprogram surveys that lead to inaction on Aboriginal inclusion. Addressing these questions directly should help encourage more teachers to take up Aboriginal perspectives in their classrooms.

The focus is on the practices of secondary science teachers in rural, resource-extraction-based communities in the boreal region of northern Ontario, Canada. In 2008 the Ontario Ministry of Education mandated that science teaching and learning should bring to the forefront consideration of the impacts of science on society and environment, and include environmental education; topics that are particularly pertinent given the location(s) of the study in logging and mining towns. Three years after the introduction of that curriculum the researcher investigates the extent to which the mandated changes have entered teacher practice. The study consists of a survey, (n = 26), interviews (n = 7) and a closer exploration of the collaboration between two teachers who work towards including social and environmental issues in their lessons. Findings provide evidence that secondary science teachers are shifting toward a stronger emphasis issues of society and environment in their practice, however teachers identified a number of concerns including an information gap, developing new lessons, program planning, assessment, and teaching in the North. A theoretical framework developed by Pedretti and Nazir was used in the analysis of the teacher collaboration. Recommendations are for professional development to specifically address the concerns raised by the teachers; as well, changes are suggested to the theoretical framework to include a stronger emphasis on environmental education.

The call for the integration of ethical considerations in the teaching of science is now firmly on the agenda. Taking as illustrative a science lesson in a pre-service teacher class, the authors consider the roles of STSE (science, technology, society and environment) and the increasingly influential heavily funded STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education initiatives. The origins and foci of both initiatives are discussed, as are their disparate ontological foundations. The use of Habermas' knowledge theories in conjunction with ethical frameworks is posited as a way of considering both STSE and STEM perspectives and their implications for strengthening science pedagogy.

Traditional secondary science education draws on markedly different pedagogies than those made use of in contemporary environmental education, therefore, embedding environmental education within secondary science curriculum presents both epistemological and practical difficulties for teachers. This ethnographic study examines the work of six secondary science teachers in Northern Ontario, Canada, as they engage in an action research project focused on merging environmental education in their science lessons. Over the course of five months the teachers examine and discuss their views and their professional development related to the project. In the place of definitive conclusions, six propositions relating the work of secondary science teachers to environmental education, form the basis for a discussion of the implications of the study. The implications are particularly relevant to secondary schools in Ontario, Canada, where the embedding of environmental education in science studies has been mandated. (Contains 1 table.)

As educators at a faculty of education, the authors found that teacher candidates (TCs) invariably purchased new materials whenever they had an assignment requiring some form of construction activity. They were concerned about this learned, consumer behavior; lessons of moderation in using the Earth's resources are important elements of sustainability education. Humans are consumers in both a natural and an anthropological sense, but are capable of sustainable consumerism. Therefore, the authors wanted to promote moderation/sustainable consumerism through an educational intervention in their teacher-education classes. Inspired by Selby's (2011) third proposition for education for sustainable contraction, they revised an existing art/science integration project where constructions would be created from recycled and/or natural materials. The TCs' constructions, process work, and Reflection papers provided insight into their creative thinking, and learning, regarding sustainable consumerism.

In our work in environmental education (EE) as part of formal schooling we partnered with local schools to explore the practice of embedding, or integrating EE within formal school curriculum using inquiry-based pedagogies. In this paper we report on and discuss our growing understanding of the practice of pedagogical documentation and the subsequent creation of learning stories within the context of EE. Our thinking is focused on how teacher practice in the use of learning stories might strengthen student self-determination in inquiry-based environmental education opportunities. We describe the E4E (Educating for Environment) school project, and provide samples of learning stories as evidence for analysis and discussion. Working with a grounded theory approach, we propose that student thinking in inquiry-based contexts might follow one or more of five thinking/learning pathways (reasoning, propositional, action-oriented, metacognitive and emotive). We close with comments on the benefits to students and educators alike, when we merge EE with learning stories.

The author compares two frameworks, one proposed by Sauvé (2005) for environmental education (EE) and the other prepared by Pedretti and Nazir (2011) for Science, Technology, Society and Environment (STSE) education. With the aim of investigating the utility of the two frameworks as tools for analysis of science teaching practice, the author applies the two frameworks to a series of lessons designed and delivered by two secondary science teachers. The results indicate that the STSE framework might be useful, but only if a seventh current is added to the six currents already existing in the framework.

This backward-looking reflection, which stems from experiences of an action research project with teachers, begins with an overview of current perspectives on action research in education settings. Significant details of the project are described to provide context for identification and discussion of the strengths and weaknesses relating to action research encountered by the author. Strengths include collegiality, dedicated time and space, facilitation and transparency and weaknesses discussed are issues of emancipation, the role of the researcher/facilitator, locus of power, data collection, professional development and teacher talk are discussed. The author attempts to orient both the methodology and the practical aspects of her action research experiences as a way to prepare for future research endeavors. (Contains 1 table.)

Objective: To obtain preliminary evidence of the feasibility and effectiveness of adjunctive family psychoeducation in adolescent major depressive disorder. Method: Participants were from outpatient clinics in Hamilton and London, Ontario. Over 24 months, 41 adolescents ages 13 through 18 years meeting major depressive disorder criteria were recruited (31 in Hamilton, 10 in London). Participants were randomized to usual treatment or usual treatment plus family psychoeducation. Outcome measures were readministered at 2 weeks, mid-treatment, posttreatment, and 3-month follow-up. Intent-to-treat analyses used [chi square] and t tests and growth curve analysis. Standardized effects based on growth curve estimates were calculated for continuous outcomes. Results: The London site was withdrawn because of poor participant retention. In Hamilton, no participant missed more than one assessment and there was good family psychoeducation adherence. Compared to controls, participants in the experimental group showed greater improvement in social functioning and adolescent-parent relationships (with medium standardized effect size greater than 0.5), and parents reported greater satisfaction with treatment. Conclusions: There were positive treatment effects on family and social functioning processes postulated to mediate the clinical course of major depressive disorder. The study provides support for further evaluation of family psychoeducation in this clinical population. (Contains 4 tables.)

Fewer lawyers are being elected to Nova Scotia's Legislative Assembly in recent years. In this article, the author traces the decline over the past decades, provides some hypotheses as to why this trend has occurred, and analyzes what the relative absence of lawyers in a representative legislative body may mean. He cites the 1970s as a turning point for the decline of MLA-lawyers and suspects the shift from part-time work to full-time duties as an MLA, the relatively low salary compared to professional fees, and the poor post-politics job prospects, contributed to making the role less of a draw for practicing lawyers. The author also highlights skills lawyers may bring to the role of an MLA in terms of writing legislation and helping constituents with casework. He concludes by examining the Attorney General and Minister of Justice roles and the potential legal/constitutional questions that may arise if and when this cabinet position and the deputy minister position are occupied by non-lawyers. Two significant Supreme Court rulings from the 1990s have opened the door to using Hansard Debates to divine a parliament's intent in court cases which challenge understandings of laws. Although the Supreme Court rulings stressed that use of Hansard as a source in legal proceedings should be strictly limited, subsequent lower courts have not always observed these limits. In this article, the author outlines these developments and explains how the more liberal use of Hansard in courts can be problematic. He concludes by cautioning parliamentarians to be mindful of how the words they use during debate may be used by the courts in the future, and urges the courts to consider how some parliamentarians might begin using their speeches in parliament to win in court what they could not in a legislature. Quantitative thermography is considered as a reliable method to measure the thermal transmittance U-values of opaque building envelopes. Previously developed external infrared thermography (IRT) methodologies mainly focused on comparison of measured U-values with nominal U-values of wall assemblies in European construction. This study attempted to develop an external IRT method to determine clear wall U-values, where the impacts of repeating members (studs) were considered. The proposed method was compared with two established practices in Canada, namely the parallel path method and 3D thermal simulations. The IRT measurements were conducted on a conditioned at-scale insulated wood-framed wall structure. Besides the importance of environmental conditions on the thermal images, two thermal imaging artefacts were assessed and discussed, including nonlinear characteristics of infrared (IR) camera focal array, a.k.a. non-uniformity corrections (NUC) and vignetting. The results demonstrated that the location of the region of interest (ROI) plays a key role in U-value measurement due to the vignetting effect and colder thermal bridges at corners. It was also found that NUC should be considered during the survey. Furthermore, U-value measurement with IRT in the best-case scenario (depending on the location of ROI) deviated from nominal U-values by 6.25%–25.00%. The clear wall U-value results with IRT were validated with three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis software, Siemens NX, which differed by −11.53%–10.00% (in the best case scenario). Additionally, the clear wall U-values obtained with parallel path method were comparable with simulation values for walls without highly conductive materials such as metal. • External infrared thermography (IRT) was performed to quantify the U-value of three insulated wood-framed wall assemblies. • Effects of the thermal anomalies such as studs on the U-value measurement were assessed. • Impacts of thermal imaging artefacts on the U-value measurements such as non-uniformity corrections and vignetting were analyzed. • Results were validated with two accepted industry methods; 3D simulation tool (NX) and parallel path method. • External IRT could be considered as a rapid and reliable tool for quantification of wood-framed wall thermal performance. Background-to guide the implementation of patient centricity and engagement in cancer clinical trials (CTs) and to operationalize the Canadianized version of the Clinical Trials Transformation Initiative (C-CTTI) model, the development of a charter was identified by cancer CT stakeholders. Methods-the Canadian Cancer Trial Stakeholder Charter (the Charter) was initiated by Colorectal Cancer Canada (CCC) and developed via the-1-formation of an inclusive working group (WG) that drafted the document using recommendations collected during the development of the C-CTTI model; 2-socialization of the draft Charter to solicit feedback from cancer CT stakeholders, including those who attended the 2019 CCC Conference; and 3-incorporation of stakeholders' feedback and finalization of the Charter by the WG. Results-the Charter was built around five guiding principles-1-patient centricity; 2-commitment to education and training; 3-collaboration as equal and independent partners in research; 4-transparency and accountability; and 5-high standards in data collection integrity and honesty. These principles led to the Charter's five tenets, which stipulate stakeholder commitments, aiming to make CTs accessible to all patients, improve the design and implementation of CTs to benefit patients, expand recruitment and retention of patients in CTs, and further advance cancer research and treatment. Conclusions-the Charter is intended to integrate the patient voice into the Canadian cancer CT continuum. The next phases of the C-CTTI model include the adoption and implementation of the Charter, the establishment of a patient group training program, and the development of real-world evidence/real-world data methodologies.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to characterize the population referred to the Maritime Medical Genetics Service (MMGS) because of increased risk of breast and/or ovarian cancer, and to evaluate the MMGS referral criteria for this population., Methods: We reviewed a retrospective cohort of patients at increased risk of breast and/or ovarian cancer (n = 574) with appointments between January 2001 and May 2007 at the MMGS. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics in Filemaker Pro 8.5v1 and Microsoft Excel., Results: Among 574 patients, 253 (44%) had test results available at the time of data collection, and 65 (25.7%) had BRCA mutations (44 BRCA1 and 21 BRCA2). Positive test results for each referral criterion ranged from 0% to 100%., Conclusion: Use of referral criteria at the MMGS yielded higher rates of positive test results than previously thought. It may be beneficial to expand testing criteria to ensure that everyone who may carry a mutation is offered testing.
