Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) experts and individuals with ADHD have made many recommendations concerning mobile apps that could potentially help college students succeed. But do students know about these recommended apps? Do they find them useful? How do students use mobile apps for completing schoolwork? To answer these questions we carried out two empirical studies. In study 1, 35 Canadian postsecondary students who self-reported ADHD and 74 students without disabilities completed an online LimeSurvey questionnaire and indicated which of 20 expert recommended schoolwork-related apps they had tried and which they liked. In Study 2, nine students with ADHD specified how they used their technologies to complete schoolwork. Results indicate that students with and without ADHD were familiar with only 13 of the 20 apps recommended by experts, and that they liked only 11. For completing academic work, the most popular apps were built-in smartphone camera and recording apps. Students also found Microsoft, Google, Pomodoro and Kahoot apps helpful. Discord was the most popular app for collaboration with classmates. Results show that students with and without ADHD found the same apps and technologies helpful. To the best of our knowledge this is the first study to actually query students with ADHD about their app use and preferences. We conclude that disability service providers, academic administrators and access technologists need to stay up-to-date about general use mobile apps to enable them to make appropriate recommendations to help students with ADHD succeed in college.

The Community Cooking Workshops (CCWs) are free, bi-weekly, hands-on, cooking and nutrition education workshops for international students facilitated by the Simon Fraser University (SFU) Peer Health Educators (PHEs). The impacts of the CCWs on international student nutrition knowledge, behavior change, and social outcomes were examined. Data was collected and coded from five Spring 2016 CCWs through workshop evaluation forms (n=87, 93% response rate) and nine semi-structured interviews with international student participants. Participants reported changes in eating behavior and knowledge (all food should be consumed in moderation, with variety) and improved sense of community. Future research should assess the long-term impacts of cooking workshops in postsecondary institutions on diet quality, cooking skills, social connectedness, and international student wellbeing.

Background: Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome or ME/CFS) is a debilitating, complex, multisystem illness. Developing a comprehensive understanding of the multiple and interconnected barriers to optimal care will help advance strategies and care models to improve quality of life for people living with ME in Canada. Objectives: To: (1) identify and systematically map the available evidence; (2) investigate the design and conduct of research; (3) identify and categorize key characteristics; and (4) identify and analyse knowledge gaps related to healthcare system barriers for people living with ME in Canada. Methods: The protocol was preregistered in July 2022. Peer‐reviewed and grey literature was searched, and patient partners retrieved additional records. Eligible records were Canadian, included people with ME/CFS and included data or synthesis relevant to healthcare system barriers. Results: In total, 1821 records were identified, 406 were reviewed in full, and 21 were included. Healthcare system barriers arose from an underlying lack of consensus and research on ME and ME care; the impact of long‐standing stigma, disbelief, and sexism; inadequate or inconsistent healthcare provider education and training on ME; and the heterogeneity of care coordinated by family physicians. Conclusions: People living with ME in Canada face significant barriers to care, though this has received relatively limited attention. This synthesis, which points to several areas for future research, can be used as a starting point for researchers, healthcare providers and decision‐makers who are new to the area or encountering ME more frequently due to the COVID‐19 pandemic. With the recent release of a new international charter on health promoting universities and institutions of higher education, universities and colleges are increasingly interested in providing learning experiences that enhance and support student well-being. Despite the recognition of learning environments as a potential setting for creating and enhancing well-being, limited research has explored students' own perceptions of well-being in learning environments. This article provides a qualitative exploration of students' lived experiences of well-being in learning environments within a Canadian post-secondary context. A semi-structured focus group and interview protocol was used to explore students' own definitions and experiences of well-being in learning environments. The findings illuminate several pathways through which learning experiences contribute to student well-being, and offer insight into how courses may be designed and delivered in ways that enhance student well-being, learning and engagement. The findings also explore the interconnected nature of well-being, satisfaction and deep learning. The relevance for the design and delivery of higher education learning experiences are discussed, and the significance of the findings for university advancement decisions are considered.

In this article we describe the "Learning Environments and Well-Being Research Project," a collaborative initiative between a research institute and a health promotion unit at a leading Canadian university. The purposes of this project are, first, to conduct research about how classroom environments within higher education settings can be harnessed for the enhancement of student well-being, engaged learning, and civic engagement and, second, to build on current health and counseling initiatives that aim to foster well-being in the classroom. We then explain in detail one outcome of our collaborative research program, which was the development and validation of a robust learning environments instrument. This instrument is titled the "Healthy Environments and Learning Practices Survey" (HELPS), and it was validated using a sample of 988 postsecondary students across disciplines.

This article explores how partnership building can be used as a strategic tool in the creation of campus conditions that positively contribute to both student well-being and student retention. Synergies between strategic enrollment management literature and student well-being theories are discussed, and an example of how a partnership approach has been advanced to create conditions for well-being in learning environments at Simon Fraser University is shared. The processes undertaken and lessons learned are discussed, to provide insight for others interested in advancing a similar approach.

Objective The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted healthcare delivery and clinical research worldwide, with data from areas most affected demonstrating an impact on rheumatology care. This study aimed to characterize the impact of the pandemic on the initial presentation of JIA and JIA-related research in Canada. Methods Data collected from the Canadian Alliance of Pediatric Rheumatology Investigators JIA Registry from the year pre-pandemic (11 March 2019 to 10 March 2020) was compared with data collected during the first year of the pandemic (11 March 2020 to 10 March 2021). Outcomes included time from symptom onset to first assessment, disease severity at presentation and registry recruitment. Proportions and medians were used to describe categorical and continuous variables, respectively. Results The median time from symptom onset to first assessment was 138 (IQR 64–365) days pre-pandemic vs 146 (IQR 83–359) days during the pandemic. The JIA category frequencies remained overall stable (44% oligoarticular JIA pre-pandemic, 46.8% pandemic), except for systemic JIA (12 cases pre-pandemic, 1 pandemic). Clinical features, disease activity (cJADAS10), disability (CHAQ) and quality of life (JAQQ) scores were similar between the two cohorts. Pre-pandemic, 225 patients were enrolled, compared with 111 in the pandemic year, with the greatest decrease from March to June 2020. Conclusions We did not observe the anticipated delay in time to presentation or increased severity at presentation, suggesting that, within Canada, care adapted well to provide support to new patient consults without negative impacts. Objective. People living with long COVID describe a high symptom burden, and a more detailed assessment is needed to inform rehabilitation recommendations. The objectives were to use validated questionnaires to measure the severity of fatigue and compare this with normative data and thresholds for clinical relevance in other diseases; measure and describe the impact of postexertional malaise (PEM); and assess symptoms of dysfunctional breathing, self-reported physical activity, and health-related quality of life. Methods. This was an observational study with a cross-sectional survey design (data collection from February 2021 to April 2021). Eligible participants were adults experiencing persistent symptoms due to COVID-19 that did not predate the confirmed or suspected infection. Questionnaires included the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy--Fatigue Scale and the DePaul Symptom Questionnaire--Post-Exertional Malaise. Results. After data cleaning, 213 participants were included in the analysis. The total Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy--Fatigue Scale score was 18 (SD=10) (where the score can range from 0 to 52, and a lower score indicates more severe fatigue), and 71.4% were experiencing chronic fatigue. Postexertional symptom exacerbation affected most participants, and 58.7% met the PEM scoring thresholds used in people living with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome. Conclusion. Long COVID is characterized by chronic fatigue that is clinically relevant and at least as severe as fatigue in several other clinical conditions. PEM is a significant challenge for this patient group. Because of the potential for setbacks and deteriorated function following overexertion, fatigue and postexertional symptom exacerbation must be monitored and reported in clinical practice and in studies involving interventions for people with long COVID. Impact. Physical therapists working with people with long COVID should measure and validate the patient's experience. Postexertional symptom exacerbation must be considered, and rehabilitation needs to be carefully designed based on individual presentation. Objective: To estimate the impact of enthesitis on patient-reported outcomes in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), irrespective of JIA category.Methods: Children enrolled in the Research in Arthritis in Canadian Children Emphasizing Outcomes cohort were studied. Entheseal tenderness by physician examination in 33 defined locations, Juvenile Arthritis Quality of Life Questionnaire (JAQQ), Quality of My Life (QoML) Questionnaire, Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire (C-HAQ), and a pain visual analog scale were completed at enrollment, every 6 months for 2 years, and then yearly up to 5 years. Analyses consisted of descriptive statistics, linear mixed models for longitudinal data, and analysis of covariance.Results: Among 1,371 patients followed for a median of 35.3 months (interquartile range 22.1, 49.2), 214 (16%) had enthesitis, of whom 137 (64%) were classified as having enthesitis-related arthritis. After adjusting for JIA category and covariates, children with enthesitis reported higher JAQQ (mean raw score 2.71 versus 2.16, adjusted difference 0.41 points; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.22, 0.59), higher C-HAQ (0.47 versus 0.31, adjusted difference 0.14 points; 95% CI 0.07, 0.22), higher pain (3.01 versus 1.68, adjusted difference 0.94 points; 95% CI 0.64, 1.25), and lower QoML (7.02 versus 8.23, adjusted difference -0.80 points; 95% CI -1.09, -0.51) scores than children without enthesitis. These differences persisted up to 5 years.Conclusion: Children with enthesitis, regardless of JIA category, report worse patient-reported outcomes than those without enthesitis. Objective: To describe the prevalence, associated characteristics, and course of enthesitis in a juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) inception cohort.Methods: Canadian children newly diagnosed with JIA between 2005 and 2010 were categorized using International League of Associations for Rheumatology criteria at the 6-month visit and followed in the Research in Arthritis in Canadian Children Emphasizing Outcomes (ReACCh-Out) cohort for up to 5 years. The presence of entheseal tenderness on examination at 33 sites shown on a homunculus was recorded at 0, 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months after enrollment. Enthesitis was defined as entheseal tenderness at more than 1 site or on more than 1 occasion. Analyses consisted of descriptive statistics and linear mixed models for longitudinal data.Results: Of 1,406 patients, 219 (16%) had enthesitis and, of those with enthesitis, 141 (64%) were classified as having enthesitis-related arthritis (ERA). Children with enthesitis were more often older (10.7 versus 7.5 years), male (57% versus 31%), and with polyarthritis (57% versus 41%) and sacroiliac involvement (30% versus 4%). Entheseal tenderness was most frequent at the calcaneal plantar fascial insertion (39%), Achilles tendon insertion (31%), and tibial tuberosity (30%). The mean number of tender entheseal sites decreased in parallel with active joint counts. There was no difference in active joint counts over time in children with or without enthesitis (P = 0.73).Conclusion: Enthesitis was observed in 16% of patients with JIA, but only two thirds were categorized as having ERA. Contrary to expectations, most children with enthesitis had polyarticular involvement. The course of enthesitis paralleled the course of active joint counts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To describe changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) over time in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), relative to other outcomes, and to identify predictors of unfavorable HRQoL trajectories.Methods: Children with JIA in the Research in Arthritis in Canadian Children emphasizing Outcomes (ReACCh-Out) cohort were included. The Juvenile Arthritis Quality of Life Questionnaire (JAQQ, a standardized instrument), health-related Quality of My Life (HRQoML, an instrument based on personal valuations), and JIA core variables were completed serially. Analyses included median values, Kaplan-Meier survival curves, and latent trajectory analysis.Results: A total of 1,249 patients enrolled at a median of 0.5 months after diagnosis were followed for a median of 34.2 months. The degree of initial HRQoL impairment and probabilities of reaching the best possible HRQoL scores varied across JIA categories (best for oligoarthritis, worst for rheumatoid factor-positive polyarthritis). Median times to attain best possible HRQoL scores (JAQQ 59.3 months, HRQoML 34.5 months), lagged behind those for disease activity, pain, and disability measures. Most patients followed trajectories with minimal or mild impairment; however, 7.6% and 13.8% of patients, respectively, followed JAQQ and HRQoML trajectories with persistent major impairment in HRQoL. JIA category, aboriginal ethnicity, and baseline disease activity measures distinguished between membership in trajectories with major and minimal impairments.Conclusion: Improvement in HRQoL is slower than for disease activity, pain, and disability. Improvement of a measure based on respondents' preferences (HRQoML) is more rapid than that of a standardized measure (JAQQ). Has your institution purchased discovery layer tools? Are you wondering how students are using them and how much return your institution is getting on that investment? Not only are there more resources available to students online than ever before, but there are also more avenues for students to discover those resources. The Royal Roads University Library puts links to Google Scholar, Summon, LibGuides, Captivate tutorials, and more onto its Web pages. This paper is an investigation of how students are using those resources and what they think of them. It presents student feedback on these discovery layers combined with empirical evidence from usage statistics. The paper explains how the library will use this evidence to inform both the electronic paths designed to lead students to its resources and the outcomes of its information literacy instructional sessions. In Wilkinson v. Kitzinger, the petitioner (Susan Wilkinson) sought a declaration of her marital status, following her marriage to Celia Kitzinger in British Columbia, Canada in August 2003. The High Court refused the application, finding that their valid Canadian marriage is, in United Kingdom law, a civil partnership. In this note, I focus on Sir Mark Potter’s adjudication of the human rights issues under Articles 8, 12 and 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights (E.C.H.R.), highlighting his restatement of the ideology of the ‹traditional’ family as natural, normative and desirable. I argue that this case shows that the exclusion of same sex couples from marriage is a feminist issue, because denying same sex couples access to marriage works to sediment patriarchal ideas and re-inscribe gender roles within the family. We conducted a telephone survey during 2001–2002 to investigate sexual behavior, sexual dysfunction, and related help-seeking behavior in five Anglophone countries. In total, 5,998 individuals (2,992 men and 3,006 women) aged 40–80 years in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand completed the survey. The majority of subjects were sexually active, and although many men and women had experienced sexual dysfunctions, few had sought medical care for these dysfunctions. Further investigation is required to determine whether national differences in the prevalence of sexual dysfunctions are due to genetic predisposition, health factors, cultural perception or socioeconomic situation. This paper describes the Psychodynamic Psychiatry Service (PPS) of the University of Alberta Hospital over its 30 years of development. This psychiatric organization consists of three clinical programs-an outpatient clinic and intensive day and evening programs-and an integral evaluation and research unit. The PPS is unique in its group therapy clinical orientation, its psychodynamic theoretical orientation, and its integration of an ongoing research program that establishes empirical validation of its clinical work. The productivity and longevity of this psychiatric organization appear to derive from several strengths, including cooperation between leaders of the clinical and research programs; the institution of staff relations groups in the three clinical programs; the operation of the fully integrated evaluation and research program that serves to provide empirical support for the treatments offered; and a unifying ideology characterized by the valuing of both psychodynamic and group oriented work. Other important factors to the success of the PPS include the strengths of the founder of the service and financial and other support of the academic department in which it is housed. This paper describes the historical development and present structure and functioning of the PPS, the challenges it has been confronted with, and the responses to those challenges.
