Research that uses self-report measures to examine the complexity of self-regulated learning (SRL) and academic challenges for adolescents is limited. This study examined the psychometric property of the Self-Regulated Learning Profile and Self-Diagnostic (SRL-PSD) instrument and addressed the multi-components of SRL and academic challenges for adolescents. Participants were 358 adolescents from a Canadian middle school. The subscales of SRL-PSD were administered to students through LimeSurvey during a 25-min instructional session over two days. Results demonstrated the SRL-PSD was a reliable and valid self-report instrument to measure adolescents' SRL practices and academic challenges. Also, all types of SRL practices and academic challenges were significantly intercorrelated. Additionally, all types of SRL practices were positively associated with school engagement, whereas all types of academic challenges were negatively associated with school engagement. Overall, this study provides a validated self-report measure for educators and researchers to examine adolescents' SRL practices and academic challenges.

Background: Most health and developmental issues affecting young people are interrelated. However, few interventions address multiple behavioral domains simultaneously or are based on theories that encompass a holistic perspective of youth development. Aim: The purpose of this scoping review was to identify and describe the range of theory-based, multibehavioral health interventions aimed at improving two or more of the following behavioral youth outcomes: (1) sexual and reproductive health; (2) education and employment; (3) violence; and (4) substance use. Methods: Interventions conducted worldwide and published in English or Spanish between January 2000 and July 2020 were identified using four databases: PubMed, PsycINFO, LILACS, and SciELO. Results: A total of 11,084 articles were identified, of which 477 were retrieved and assessed for eligibility. Twenty-three articles (evaluating 21 interventions) ultimately met the inclusion criteria. Most interventions were conducted in the United States and addressed two behavioral domains of interest, although seven interventions incorporated three domains, and one incorporated all four. Substance use was the most common domain (16 interventions) but only in the United States/Canada, followed by sexual and reproductive health (14 interventions). All produced significant improvement in at least one outcome or for at least one subgroup of youth. The most common theoretical foundations were positive youth development and social learning theory. Conclusion: Integrated interventions that are theory based and evidence informed can support positive development and empower youth to make healthy decisions. Further efforts are needed to address structural and policy issues that affect young people's developmental opportunities and health outcomes.

Based on the concept of Communities of Practice (CoP), this study describes the design and implementation of an online academic conference, Pedagogy and Practice in Technology Enhanced Language Learning (PPTELL) 2021, as a backdrop for exploring how to effectively promote the development of academic citizenship within the PPTELL CoP. To address this, we propose a framework focusing on four interrelated and interdependent dimensions: ubiquitous technologies, social practice, knowledge building, and academic citizenship. The conference utilized Zoom, Second Life, Slido, and several social media apps for various sessions and activities. A triangulation design was employed to analyze data from a post-conference online survey and observation notes. Our findings highlighted the effectiveness of the design in fostering academic citizenship, supported by multiuser virtual worlds like Second Life that enabled social engagement and knowledge building. We also discuss potential solutions to the challenges encountered, taking into account the nature of academic and higher education environments today.

Establishing a positive peer climate in elementary school classrooms is an important goal for educators because peer dynamics are thought to affect academic learning. Thus, it is important to: (1) understand the relationship between children's peer dynamics and academic functioning; and (2) identify teacher practices that influence both peer processes and academic outcomes. In this pilot study, we explored whether specific teacher strategies that promote positive behaviors in children and positive peer dynamics influence children's better academic enablers, as well as whether they do so indirectly via improving peer sociometric ratings. Such teacher strategies may be particularly relevant for supporting children who demonstrate impairment in both social and academic domains, such as children at risk for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Thus, we also examined whether these relationships differ for children with elevated ADHD symptoms and peer problems (i.e., target students), relative to classmates (i.e., non-target students). Participants were 194 children in the classrooms of 12 teachers (grades K-4) who participated in an open-trial pilot study of the school-based version of the Making Socially Accepting Inclusive Classrooms (MOSAIC) program. In the fall and spring of a school year, we assessed children's sociometric ratings received from peers, and academic enabler skills as rated by teachers. Throughout one academic year, we obtained assessments of teachers' use of MOSAIC strategies (observed and self-reported). Results showed that, after accounting for fall academic enablers, the teacher strategy of CARE time (involving one-on-one interaction with the student to build the teacher-student relationship) was positively associated with spring academic enablers. However, findings did not support the hypothesized indirect effect of peer sociometric ratings on the relationship between teacher strategy use and academic enablers, or the moderated indirect effect by target student status. Implications for future research and classroom interventions are discussed.

With the increased restrictions on physical distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, remote proctoring has emerged as an alternative to traditional onsite proctoring to ensure the continuity of essential assessments, such as computer-based medical licensing exams. Recent literature has highlighted the significant impact of different proctoring modalities on examinees' test experience, including factors like response-time data. However, the potential influence of these differences on test performance has remained unclear. One limitation in the current literature is the lack of a rigorous learning analytics framework to evaluate the comparability of computer-based exams delivered using various proctoring settings. To address this gap, the current study aims to introduce a machine-learning-based framework that analyzes computer-generated response-time data to investigate the association between proctoring modalities in high-stakes assessments. We demonstrated the effectiveness of this framework using empirical data collected from a large-scale high-stakes medical licensing exam conducted in Canada. By applying the machine-learning-based framework, we were able to extract examinee-specific response-time data for each proctoring modality and identify distinct time-use patterns among examinees based on their proctoring modality.

This study examined bidirectional associations between cross-racial friendships and children's social and academic adjustment. Participants were 583 elementary school-age children in western Canada, or the midwestern United States (4-10 years; 279 girls; 143 Asian, 88 Black, 65 Hispanic or Latinx, 171 White, 116 mixed). Children's adjustment (social preference, academic enablers, academic performance) and friendship nominations (reciprocated, received, given) were measured in fall and spring over one school year from 2017 to 2018, or from 2018 to 2019. Regarding "reciprocated" nominations, fall adjustment positively predicted spring reciprocated cross-racial friendships, but not vice-versa. For "received" nominations, academic enablers and received cross-racial friendship nominations were positively and bidirectionally related to one another. Fall same-racial friendship nominations positively predicted spring academic performance and social preference. Effect sizes were small.

Purpose: This paper aims to understand the development track of skills mismatch research and discover the hidden internal connections between literature. Design/methodology/approach: The authors gathered data through scientometric quantitative analysis using CiteSpace. Specifically, this article applied basic analysis, journal cocitation analysis (JCA), author cocitation analysis (ACA) and document cocitation analysis (DCA), cluster analysis, citation burstness detection, scientific research cooperation analysis and coconcurrence analysis of keywords of 3,125 documents from Web of Science core collections for the period 2000-2020. Findings: Through the document cocitation analysis and the keywords' co-occurrence, this article identifies influential scholars, documents, research institutions, journals and research hotspots in research on the skills mismatch phenomenon. The results showed that the publications had ballooned, and the phenomenon has become an interdisciplinary research subject. The USA and Finland remain the main contributors, which is attributed to their high-yield institutions such as the University of Helsinki, the University of Witwatersrand, the University of Washington and so on. While the African continent lacks research on skills mismatch even with the continent's effort to overcome such a crucial issue. The paper presents an in-depth analysis of skills and educational mismatch issues to better understand the evolutionary trajectory of the collective knowledge over the past 20 years and highlight the areas of active pursuit. Research limitations/implications: The authors only used Web of Science core collection to collect data; however, they can added Scopus indexed database as well to extend the research trends and explore more new research hot topics to solve the skills mismatch phenomenon. Originality/value: The scientometric analysis is of great significance for identifying the potential relationship between the literature and investigating the knowledge evolution of skills mismatch research. Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the International Labor Organization and the World Health Organization are the giants who are mostly concerned of the mismatch skills phenomenon. Researchers can refer to this study to understand the status quo, gaps and research trends to deal with the skills mismatch issue.

Significant increase in wintertime air temperature, especially the reduced cold extremes under climate change, might be beneficial to the winter survival of perennial crops. However, climate warming could result in less snowfall, reduced snow cover, as well as changes in climate conditions for fall hardening and winter thaws. How these changes might impact the risks of winter damages to overwintering crops, such as perennial forage crops requires a comprehensive assessment for proactively adapting to climate change in the agricultural sector, especially the beef and dairy industries. Based on the most up-to-date climate projections from a set of global climate models, we used a snow model and a suite of agroclimatic indices for perennial forage crops to assess potential changes in the risks of winter injury to perennial forage crops across Canada in the near-term (2030s), the mid-term (2050s), and the distant future (2070s). Our results show that the risk of exposure to extremely low temperatures (daily Tmin ≤ −15 °C) without snow protection is projected to decrease across Canada with improved conditions for fall hardening. However, winter thaws and rainfall are projected to increase, and this would increase the risk of winter injury due to loss of hardiness together with potential soil heaving and ice encasement. This study explores the use of the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), a neuro-fuzzy approach, to analyze the log data of technology-based assessments to extract relevant features of student problem-solving processes, and develop and refine a set of fuzzy logic rules that could be used to interpret student performance. The log data that record student response processes while solving a science simulation task were analyzed with ANFIS. Results indicate the ANFIS analysis could generate and refine a set of fuzzy rules that shed lights on the process of how students solve the simulation task. We conclude the article by discussing the advantages of combining human judgments with the learning capacity of ANFIS for log data analysis and outlining the limitations of the current study and areas of future research.

Contribution: This paper employs the automatic scoring of short essays as a novel way to determine pre-service teachers' knowledge of and attitudes toward computational thinking (CT) from their written reflections. Implications about designing CT courses for pre-service teachers are discussed. Background: CT is an essential 21st-century competency that supports the development of problem-solving skills. Inspired by computing science problem-solving practices, CT should transcend disciplines, but few universities or colleges include CT courses or CT content in their core courses. It is also difficult to know what pre-service teachers think about CT and their role in promoting it. Research Questions: Do pre-service teachers' coding reflections reveal any important information about their knowledge of, skills in, and attitudes toward CT? Methodology: Traditional qualitative techniques based on human raters are impractical in analyzing hundreds of essays. Topic modeling, an unsupervised machine learning modeling technique, was employed to extract topical features from participants' reflections. In one section of an undergraduate Introduction to Educational Technology course offered at a large university in Western Canada, n = 139 pre-service teachers wrote a short reflection on their experience following a 20 h Accelerated Intro to Computer Science Code.org course. Topics were identified by analyzing contextual trends in participants' written reflections. Findings: Results showed that pre-service teachers' reflections included CT concepts, practices, and perspectives. Specifically, participants connected the coding activity to prior knowledge and experiences.

Background: Fetal and neonatal exposure to lead is associated with irreversible adverse effects on neural development. There is no reliable threshold for lead effect, so limiting exposure is recommended. A significant correlation has been reported between post‐transfusion blood lead level (BLL) in infants and lead levels in transfused RBC units. We measured levels of lead, mercury, and cadmium, in Canadian donor blood to investigate if concerning levels for neonatal transfusion exist. Study Design and Methods: Whole blood samples from blood donors (n = 2529) were shipped cold within 7 days of donation. All permanent blood donation clinics across Canada were sampled. Twelve of these permanent clinics and 8 mobile clinics with a greater potential for having higher lead or mercury levels were oversampled. Heavy metals were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Results: Of all donations, 2.2% (lead) and 0.4% (mercury) had levels higher than the recommended thresholds for safe neonatal transfusion. BLLs were higher in males but there was no significant difference in the blood mercury levels of males versus females. Cadmium levels were higher in females. There was a positive correlation between donor age and levels of heavy metals, with lead having the strongest correlation (r = 0.47, p <.0001). Three clinics in close proximity to two lead‐producing mines were among the clinics with the highest BLLs. Significantly higher blood mercury levels were observed in coastal clinics. Conclusion: Our data on donor blood heavy metal levels supports considering blood transfusion as an exposure source to heavy metals and encourages informed selection of blood units for transfusion to vulnerable groups. This paper presents a framework for evaluating efforts by organizations to share research as exemplified on their websites, then reports the result of an evaluation of these efforts in 100 organizations. The result shows that the overall research sharing efforts of these organizations are modest and not well aligned to evidence on effective practice in this area. Organizations tend to devote more efforts to making products available while interpersonal strategies, though more effective, are less used. Most efforts involve one way communication to potential users. The paper concludes with suggestions for practice and for further research. (Contains 2 tables, 4 figures, and 2 footnotes.)

Introduction: Sepsis and intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) are associated with poorer long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes in very preterm infants (VPIs), but less is known about the long-term effect of meningitis and the combined impact of both meningitis and IVH. Our objective was to examine the long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes of VPIs with late onset sepsis and meningitis, with and without IVH, in Canada. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all infants <29 weeks GA who were admitted to 26 tertiary-level neonatal intensive care units in the Canadian Neonatal Network (CNN) and Canadian Neonatal Follow-Up Network (CNFUN) databases, from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2016. Results: Of the 6,322 infants in the cohort, 4,575 had no infection, 1,590 had late onset culture-positive bloodstream infection (CPBSI) only, and 157 had late onset meningitis. There was a significant (p < 0.05) trend of increasing rates of significant neurodevelopmental delay (sNDI) when comparing infants with no infection (sNDI rate 15.0%), late onset CPBSI (sNDI rate 22.9%), and late onset meningitis (sNDI rate 32.0%), even after adjustment for infant characteristics. Similar trends were observed for neurodevelopmental impairment, cerebral palsy, and individual Bayley-III scores <85 for cognitive, language, and motor development. There was an additive effect of IVH in all infant categories, but there was no multiplicative effect between IVH and late onset meningitis. Conclusion: There was an increasing trend of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes when infants with no infection, late onset CPBSI and late onset meningitis are compared. IVH had an additive effect. With limited phosphorus (P) supplies, increasing P demand, and issues with P runoff and pollution, developing an ability to reuse the large amounts of residual P stored in agricultural soils is increasingly important. In this study, we investigated the potential for residual soil P to maintain crop yields while reducing P applications and losses in Canada. Using a P cycling model coupled with a soil P dynamics model, we analyzed soil P dynamics over 110 years across Canada's provinces. We found that using soil residual P may reduce mineral P demand as large as 132 Gg P year−1 (29%) in Canada, with the highest potential for reducing P applications in the Atlantic provinces, Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia. Using residual soil P would result in a 21% increase in Canada's cropland P use efficiency. We expected that the Atlantic provinces and Quebec would have the greatest runoff P loss reduction with use of residual soil P, with the average P loss rate decreasing from 4.24 and 1.69 kg ha−1 to 3.45 and 1.38 kg ha−1, respectively. Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia would experience relatively lower reductions in P loss through use of residual soil P, with the average runoff P loss rate decreasing from 0.44, 0.36, and 4.33 kg ha−1 to 0.19, 0.26, and 4.14 kg ha−1, respectively. Spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), being a cold‐tolerant crop, may not benefit as much from a warmer climate and a lengthening of the growing season due to climate change though its suitable production area could expand further north. The objectives of this study were to assess the impact of climate change on barley yields across Canada for both current production regions and potential northern crop expansion regions in the future. Three crop models (DeNitrification and DeComposition, Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer, and Simulateur mulTIdisciplinaire pour les Cultures Standard) and 18 climate scenarios (1981–2100) were used to simulate the effect of climate change on potential (non‐water and non‐nitrogen limited) and rainfed (non‐nitrogen limited) spring barley yields for 32 locations across Canada. For the currently planted spring barley regions characterized by a humid summer in Eastern Canada (growing season precipitation >500 mm), potential and rainfed yields were projected to slightly increase in the future (<+0.2 t ha−1). In western regions where precipitation amount is lower (growing season precipitation <500 mm), changes in the potential yield varied slightly (−0.1 to +0.2 t ha−1), while the rainfed yield was projected to increase (0.2–1.0 t ha−1) mainly due to a reduction in water stress under elevated CO2. Finally, in northern regions where future expansion may occur, projected yield increases were generally large (up to 2.8 t ha−1 for potential yield), but the risk of crop failure usually remained high. Our findings suggest that future climate change will present both opportunities and regionalized risks for spring barley producers with the potential to further expand barley production northward. Objective: This longitudinal cohort study aimed to identify trajectories of parent well‐being over the first 2 years after their child's evaluation for candidacy for epilepsy surgery, and to identify the baseline clinical and demographic characteristics associated with these trajectories. Parent well‐being was based on parent depressive and anxiety symptoms and family resources (i.e., family mastery and social support). Methods: Parents of 259 children with drug‐resistant epilepsy (105 of whom eventually had surgery) were recruited from eight epilepsy centers across Canada at the time of their evaluation for epilepsy surgery candidacy. Participants were assessed at baseline and 6‐month, 1‐year, and 2‐year follow‐up. The trajectories of parents' depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and family resources were jointly estimated using multigroup latent class growth models. Results: The analyses identified three trajectories: an optimal‐stable group with no/minimal depressive or anxiety symptoms, and high family resources that remained stable over time; a mild‐decreasing‐plateau group with mild depressive and anxiety symptoms that decreased over time then plateaued, and intermediate family resources that remained stable; and a moderate‐decreasing group with moderate depressive and anxiety symptoms that decreased slightly, and low family resources that remained stable over time. Parents of children with higher health‐related quality of life, fathers, and parents who had higher household income were more likely to have better trajectories of well‐being. Treatment type was not associated with the trajectory groups, but parents whose children were seizure‐free at the time of the last follow‐up were more likely to have better trajectories (optimal‐stable or mild‐decreasing‐plateau trajectories). Significance: This study documented distinct trajectories of parent well‐being, from the time of the child's evaluation for epilepsy surgery. Parents who present with anxiety and depressive symptoms and low family resources do not do well over time. Objectives: This study examined the dental insurance coverage, dentist visits, self-perceived oral health status, and dental problems among Asian immigrant women of childbearing age in contrast to Canadian women of childbearing age and non-Asian immigrant women of childbearing age. Potential barriers to dental care services among Asian immigrant women were explored. Methods: This analysis utilized data from the combined Canadian Community Health Survey from 2011 to 2014. The analytical sample consisted of 5737 females whose age was between 20 and 39 years. Multivariable logistic regression models assessed immigrant status and other factors in relation to the indicators of dental health (i.e., dental visit, self-perceived oral health, acute teeth issue, and teeth removed due to decay). Results: Amongst Asian women immigrants of childbearing age, there was a significantly lower frequency of dentist visits compared to non-immigrant counterparts (OR = 0.53; 95% CI: 0.37–0.76). The most commonly reported reason for not seeking dental care in the last three years was that the "respondent did not think it was necessary". Relative to Canadian born women of same age bracket, Asian women of childbearing age reported fewer acute teeth issues (OR = 0.67; 95% CI: 0.49–0.91) and had a greater risk of tooth extracted due to tooth decay (OR = 3.31; 95% CI: 1.64–6.68). Furthermore, for Asian women immigrants, their major barriers to dental care included low household income (≤$39,999 vs. $40,000–$79,999 OR = 0.26) and a lack of dental insurance (no vs. yes OR = 0.33). Conclusions: Asian immigrant women showed lower utilization of dental services than non-immigrant women. A perceived lack of necessity, lower household income, and dental insurance coverage were major barriers to professional dental usage for most Asian immigrants of childbearing age. Unlike some other high-income counties, Canada does not provide universal prescription drug coverage. The various extent of coverage may left some Canadians vulnerable to cost-related non-adherence (CRNA) to medications. Using data from the 2015 national cycle of the Canadian Community Health Survey, we examine the impact of having private and public drug coverage on mitigating the risk of CRNA with a logit model and a Heckman selection model. CRNA was only observed in respondents who had prescriptions to fill, and respondents did not randomly make decisions on whether to get a prescription. This results in a classic sample selection problem. We found a higher estimated probability of reporting CRNA for uninsured respondents from the Heckman selection model than from the logit model. Respondents with government coverage only had a slightly higher probability of reporting CRNA relative to respondents with private coverage. These findings suggest that, without accounting for sample selection, the risk of not having drug insurance coverage is likely to be underestimated. Moreover, despite covering a less healthy cohort of respondents, the government insurance plans reduce risk of CRNA to a comparable level with private insurance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The purpose of this longitudinal cohort study was to examine the variables that influence health‐related quality of life (HRQOL) after epilepsy surgery in children. We examined whether treatment type (surgical vs medical therapy) and seizure control are related to other variables that have been shown to influence HRQOL, namely depressive symptoms in children with epilepsy or their parents, and the availability of family resources. Methods: In total, 265 children with drug‐resistant epilepsy were recruited from eight epilepsy centers across Canada at the time of their evaluation for candidacy for epilepsy surgery and were assessed at baseline, 6‐month, 1‐year, and 2‐year follow‐up. Parents completed the Quality of Life in Childhood Epilepsy Questionnaire (QOLCE‐55) and measures of family resources and depression; children completed depression inventories. Causal mediation analyses using natural effect models were used to evaluate the extent to which the relationship between treatment and HRQOL was explained by seizure control, child and parent depressive symptoms, and family resources. Results: Overall, 111 children underwent surgery and 154 were treated with medical therapy only. The HRQOL scores of surgical patients were 3.4 points higher (95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.2, 7.0) relative to medical patients at the 2‐year follow‐up after adjusting for baseline covariates, with 66% of the effect of surgery attributed to seizure control. Child or parent depressive symptoms and family resources had negligible mediation effects between treatment and HRQOL. The effect of seizure control on HRQOL was not mediated by child or parent depressive symptoms, or by family resources. Significance: The findings demonstrate that seizure control is on the causal pathway between epilepsy surgery and improved HRQOL in children with drug‐resistant epilepsy. However, child and parent depressive symptoms and family resources were not significant mediators. The results highlight the importance of achieving seizure control to improve HRQOL. Theories of childhood amnesia and autobiographical memory development have been based on the assumption that the age estimates of earliest childhood memories are generally accurate, with an average age of 3.5 years among adults. It is also commonly believed that early memories will by default become inaccessible later on and this eventually results in childhood amnesia. These assumptions were examined in 2 prospective studies, in which children recalled and dated their earliest memories at an initial interview and did it again 1 year (Study 1) and 2 years later (Study 2). Systematic telescoping errors emerged: Children substantially postdated their memories for the same events at the follow-up interview, particularly for memories initially dated from earlier ages. These findings have critical methodological and theoretical implications for research on childhood amnesia and autobiographical memory development.

Cognitive and psychometric variables have directed research on student test performance. However, student learning involves a substantial affective component. The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between two kinds of affective variables--interpersonal trust and attitudes towards standardised tests--likely to underlie student test performance. We also examined the effect of a print media report on students' trust and attitudes towards testing. Using structural equation modelling, we investigated the responses of 206 university students to a modified version of the Test Attitude Survey and Interpersonal Trust Scale. One notable result indicated that variation in students' attitudes about the effort expended on tests was explained by their interpersonal trust and their attitudes towards the value placed on tests. Viewed through the lens of expectancy theory, these results suggest that affective variables need to be more fully considered when considering practice and generating policy to improve student test performance.

Background: In Canada the time deferral for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) was progressively shortened (lifetime, 5 years, 1 year, 3 months). Here we describe trends in syphilis rates (a potential sexual risk marker) and risk behaviors from blood donors in the past 12 years. Study Design and Methods: Syphilis positivity in 10,288,322 whole blood donations (January 1, 2010–September 10, 2022) and gbMSM deferral time periods, donation status, age, and sex were analyzed with logistic regression. Overall, 26.9% syphilis positive and 42.2% controls (matched 1:4) participated in risk factor interviews analyzed by logistic regression. Results: Syphilis rates were higher in first‐time donors (OR 27.0, 95% CI 22.1–33.0), in males (OR 2.3, 1.9–2.8) and with the 3‐month deferral (OR 3.4, 2.6–4.3) during which the increase was greater for first‐time males (p <.001) but similar for male and female repeat donors (p >.05). Among first‐time donors, histories of intravenous drug use (OR 11.7, 2.0–69.5), male‐to‐male sex 7.8 (2.0–30.2) and birth in a high prevalence country (OR 7.6, 4.4–13.0) predicted syphilis positivity; among repeat donors, history of male‐to‐male sex (OR 33.5, CI 3.5–317.0). All but 1 gbMSM syphilis‐positive donors were noncompliant with the gbMSM deferral. About a quarter of first‐time interviewed case donors had history of syphilis; 44% were born in a high‐prevalence country. Conclusion: Rising syphilis rates in donors correlates with the general population epidemic. Recent infection rates rose similarly in males and females. Recollection of early childhood experiences was investigated in 225 European Canadian and 133 Chinese children (ages 8, 11, and 14) by a memory fluency task that measured accessibility of multiple early memories and elicited the earliest memory. Younger children provided memories of events that occurred at earlier ages than older children. Furthermore, Canadian children produced more memories and had an earlier age of first memory than did Chinese children, with cultural differences in both measures increasing with age. It appears that while adultlike childhood amnesia is still emerging among Canadian children, Chinese children by age 14 already resemble adults. Content of Canadian versus Chinese children's memories reflected an autonomous versus relational self-construal. Results are discussed in terms of sociocultural influences on memory.

The soybean industry in Canada aimed to extensively expand soybean production to benefit from new early-maturing varieties and the warming climate. However, setbacks in the soybean industry since 2017 demonstrated the impacts of climate risk and global market uncertainty. Therefore, a better understanding of future climate conditions that will impact soybean growth in Canada is needed for decision-making in the sector, such as prioritizing regions for expansion and developing climate change adaptation strategies through either agronomic management practices or breeding new cultivars. Based on climate projections from a set of global climate models, we analyzed climate conditions for growing soybeans, including growing season start, crop heat units, precipitation, precipitation deficits and climate extremes, in the near-term (2030s), the mid-term (2050s) and the distant future (2070s). We found that a future warmer climate with an increase of 1.6, 2.8 and 4.1 °C in the growing season (May–September) mean temperature averaged over Canada's land area in the near-term, mid-term and distant future under SSP3-7.0 would favour the expansion of soybean production further north and west. However, an increase of approximately 200 mm in precipitation deficits on the semiarid Canadian Prairies in the mid-term would constrain soybean production unless irrigation could be introduced. Heat- and drought-tolerant cultivars should be developed to adapt soybean production to a changing climate, in addition to the adoption of late-maturing cultivars that would benefit from the lengthened growing season and increased crop heat units. Hepatitis B surveillance is essential to achieving Canada's goal of eliminating hepatitis B by 2030. Hepatitis B rates, association of infection with vaccine age-eligibility, and risk factors were analyzed among 1,401,603 first-time Canadian blood donors from 2005 to 2020. Donors were classified as having likely chronic or likely resolved/occult infections based on hepatitis B surface antigen, anti-hepatitis B core antigen, and hepatitis B nucleic acid test results. Likely chronically infected and control donors (ratio 1:4) participated in risk-factor interviews. The 2019 rate of likely chronic infection was 61.9 per 100,000 (95% CI 46.5–80.86) and 1449.5 per 100,000 for likely resolved/occult infections (95% CI 1370.7–1531.7). Likely chronic infections were higher in males (OR 3.2; 95% CI 2.7–3.7) and the vaccine-ineligible birth cohort (OR 1.9; 95% CI 1.6–2.2). The main risk factors were living with someone who had hepatitis (OR 12.5; 95% CI 5.2–30.0) and ethnic origin from a high-prevalence country (OR 8.4; 95% CI 5.9–11.9). Undiagnosed chronic hepatitis B may be more prevalent in Canada than currently determined by traditional passive hepatitis B reporting. With the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant in late 2021, Canadian public health case/contact testing was scaled back due to high infection rates with milder symptoms in a highly vaccinated population. We monitored the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (anti-N) and spike protein (anti-S) antibodies in blood donors across Canada from September 2021 to June 2022 in 202,123 randomly selected samples. Multivariable logistic regression of anti-N positivity with month, age, sex, racialization, region, material and social deprivation (based on postal code) identified as independent predictors. Piece-wise logistic regression analysed the association between anti-S concentration and month, and anti-N/anti-S positivity. Infection-related seroprevalence (anti-N positive) was 4.38% (95% CI: 3.96, 4.81) in September reaching 50.70% (50.15, 52.16) in June; nearly 100% were anti-S positive throughout. Anti-N positivity was associated with younger age, male sex, the Alberta and Prairies regions, greater material deprivation and less social deprivation (p < 0.001). Anti-S concentration was high initially (3306 U/mL, IQR 4280 U/mL), increased to (13,659 U/mL, IQR 28,224 U/mL) by June (p < 0.001), following the pattern of deployment of the third and fourth vaccine doses and was higher in those that were anti-N positive (p < 0.001). Despite already high vaccination-related seroprevalence, infection-related seroprevalence increased dramatically with the emergence of the Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes an improved model-based forest height inversion method for airborne L-band dual-baseline repeat-pass polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (PolInSAR) collections. A two-layer physical model with various volumetric scattering attenuation and dynamic motion properties is first designed based on the traditional Random Motion over Ground (RMoG) model. Related PolInSAR coherence functions with both volumetric and temporal decorrelations incorporated are derived, where the impacts of homogenous and heterogeneous attenuation and dynamic motion properties on the performance of forest height inversion were investigated by the Linear Volume Attenuation (LVA), Quadratic Volume Attenuation (QVA), Linear Volume Motion (LVM), and Quadratic Volume Motion (QVM) depictions in the volume layer. Dual-baseline PolInSAR data were acquired to increase the degree of freedom (DOF) of the coherence observations and thereby provide extra constraints on the forest parameters to address the underdetermined problem. The experiments were carried out on a boreal forest in Canada and a tropical one in Gabon, where physical models with LVA + QVM (RMSE: 3.56 m) and QVA + LVM (RMSE: 6.83 m) exhibited better performances on the forest height inversion over the boreal and tropical forest sites, respectively. To leverage the advantages of LVA, QVA, LVM, and QVM, a pixel-wise optimization strategy was used to obtain the best forest height inversion performance for the range of attenuation and motion profiles considered. This pixel-wise optimization surpasses the best-performing single model and achieves forest height inversion results with an RMSE of 3.21 m in the boreal forest site and an RMSE of 6.48 m in the tropical forest site. Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) has significantly advanced cancer immunotherapy, yet its patient response rates are generally low. Vaccines, including immunostimulant‐adjuvanted peptide antigens, can improve ICB. The emerging neoantigens generated by cancer somatic mutations elicit cancer‐specific immunity for personalized immunotherapy; the novel cyclic dinucleotide (CDN) adjuvants activate stimulator of interferon genes (STING) for antitumor type I interferon (IFN‐I) responses. However, CDN/neoantigen vaccine development has been limited by the poor antigen/adjuvant codelivery. Here, pH‐responsive CDN/neoantigen codelivering nanovaccines (NVs) for ICB combination tumor immunotherapy are reported. pH‐responsive polymers are synthesized to be self‐assembled into multivesicular nanoparticles (NPs) at physiological pH and disassembled at acidic conditions. NPs with high CDN/antigen coloading are selected as NVs for CDN/antigen codelivery to antigen presenting cells (APCs) in immunomodulatory lymph nodes (LNs). In the acidic endosome of APCs, pH‐responsive NVs facilitate the vaccine release and escape into cytosol, where CDNs activate STING for IFN‐I responses and antigens are presented by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) for T‐cell priming. In mice, NVs elicit potent antigen‐specific CD8+ T‐cell responses with immune memory, and reduce multifaceted tumor immunosuppression. In syngeneic murine tumors, NVs show robust ICB combination therapeutic efficacy. Overall, these CDN/neoantigen‐codelivering NVs hold the potential for ICB combination tumor immunotherapy. In northern climates, accurate simulation of thermal and hydrological budgets for farmlands overwinter is crucial for both an accurate prediction of spring flooding and the successful management of nutrient losses. As snow cover influences soil freezing dynamics, it has been hypothesized that reduced snow cover due to warmer winters might intensify soil freezing. The present study was designed to test this hypothesis. Drawing upon observed snow depth and soil temperature data collected from six research farms across Southern Canada over various time spans from 1989 to 2020, the root zone water quality model, integrated with the simultaneous heat and water model (RZ‐SHAW), was calibrated and validated. The potential influence of warmer winter on shifts in soil frost dynamics was evaluated by estimating soil freezing dynamics for each farmland site under various air temperature scenarios using the RZ‐SHAW model. Soil frozen depth in the eastern Canada sites increased with increasing air temperature in some years but decreased under the highest air temperature increases of 3.5°C. The monthly relationship between snow depth and soil frozen depth was determined through partial correlation analysis. Snow was most effective in alleviating soil freezing in the months of January and February, a period when snow cover depth was least affected by warming air temperatures. This study suggests that the hypothesis of increasing soil frozen depth under global warming‐induced snow cover reduction holds true in conditions where soil energy lost through reduced snow cover outweighed the soil energy gained through warmer air temperature. Plain Language Summary: Snow cover is a critical surface condition affecting the freezing dynamics of the soil during winter. However, snow depth tends to decrease across the globe as climate change continues. Previous research has hypothesized that the global warming‐induced snow cover reduction would lead to intensified soil freezing through in situ snow manipulation experiments. In this study, we use a physical model to simulate the soil winter conditions for six croplands in Canada to understand the change of soil freezing dynamics under rising air‐temperature induced snow depth reduction and the monthly relationship between snow depth and soil frozen depth across the winter. We suggest that the influence of warmer winter‐induced snow cover reduction on the soil freezing dynamics is not linear but a function of the soil net energy change under warmer air temperature and reduced snow insulation. This information could be useful for agricultural management, such as adjusting the pipe depth for irrigation and drainage pipes, the timing to close and open the control drainage gate, and the tillage date and the seedling date for cold regions under climate change. Crop identification and classification are of great significance to agricultural land use management. The physically constrained general model-based decomposition (PCGMD) has proven to be a promising method in comparison with the typical four-component decomposition methods in scattering mechanism interpretation and identifying vegetation types. However, the robustness of PCGMD requires further investigation from the perspective of final applications. This paper aims to validate the efficiency of the PCGMD method on crop classification for the first time. Seven C-band time-series RADARSAT-2 images were exploited, covering the entire growing season over an agricultural region near London, Ontario, Canada. Firstly, the response and temporal evolution of the four scattering components obtained by PCGMD were analyzed. Then, a forward selection approach was applied to achieve the highest classification accuracy by searching an optimum combination of multi-temporal SAR data with the random forest (RF) algorithm. For comparison, the general model-based decomposition method (GMD), the original and its three improved Yamaguchi four-component decomposition approaches (Y4O, Y4R, S4R, G4U), were used in all tests. The results reveal that the PCGMD method is highly sensitive to seasonal crop changes and matches well with the real physical characteristics of the crops. Background: High-quality clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are important for the effective treatment of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). However, recommendations provided by different quality guidelines may lead to varied clinical practice outcomes. Objective: To assess the quality of available CPGs for the management of BPSD and summarize the best recommendations for treating BPSD. Methods: This was a systematic review of CPGs for the management of BPSD with data obtained from electronic databases and evaluated using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II instrument, consisting of six domains: "Scope and purpose", "Stakeholder involvement", "Rigor of development", "Clarity of presentation", "Applicability", and "Editorial independence". The criteria for high-quality guidelines were set as: the score of high-quality guidelines in the "Rigor of development" domain should be ≥60% and as well as a score of >60% in at least three other domains. High-quality guidelines were selected for recommendation extraction, and the final recommendations were formed in combination with the latest meta-analysis and randomized clinical-trial results. Results: In term of median scores in each domain for the six included CPGs, "Scope and purpose" (87.5%) scored better than all others, whereas "Applicability" (46.5%) was the domain with the lowest score. Four CPGs (2015 APA, 2018 NICE, 2018 CANADA, 2020 EAN) met the criteria of high-quality guidelines and were used to extract recommendations. From these four CPGs, nine specific recommendations related to the management of BPSD were summarized, of which seven were related to pharmacological treatment and two to non-pharmacological treatment. These recommendations covered the applicability of antipsychotic drugs, medication recommendations, withdrawal times, and several suitable non-pharmacological therapies. Conclusion: The quality of CPGs for the management of BPSD requires improvement, especially for the "Applicability" domain. For psychotic-like symptoms in dementia, the use of antipsychotics should be based on the individual's risk-benefit ratio, and the use of atypical antipsychotics seems to be a better choice. Background: Case detection underestimates the burden of the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the first COVID-19 wave, we estimated the seroprevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) among blood donors across Canada.Study Design and Methods: This serial cross-sectional study was conducted between May 9 and July 21, 2020 from blood donors donating at all Canadian Blood Services locations. We used the Abbott Architect assay to detect SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies from retention plasma. Seroprevalence was standardized to population-level demographics and assay characteristics were adjusted using the Rogan-Gladen equation. Results were stratified by region, age, ethnicity, ABO groups, and quantiles of material and social deprivation indices. Temporal trends were evaluated at 2-week intervals. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression compared SARS-CoV-2 reactive to non-reactive donors by sociodemographic variables.Results: Overall 552/74642 donors, had detectable antibodies, adjusted seroprevalence was 7.0/1000 donors (95% CI; 6.3, 7.6). Prevalence was differential by geography, Ontario had the highest rate, 8.8/1000 donors (7.8, 9.8), compared to the Atlantic region 4.5/1000 donors (2.6, 6.4); adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 2.2 (1.5, 3.3). Donors that self-identified as an ethnic minority were more likely than white donors to be sero-reactive aOR 1.5 (1.2, 1.9). No temporal trends were observed.Discussion: Worldwide, blood services have leveraged their operational capacity to inform public health. While >99% of Canadians did not show humoral evidence of past infection, we found regional variability and disparities by ethnicity. Background: At Canadian Blood Services, platelet concentrate (PC) shelf life was extended to 7 days with a large-volume, delayed-sampling bacterial screening algorithm. We present the development study and postimplementation results.Study Design and Methods: In the development study, PCs inoculated with five bacteria (various concentrations) were incubated for 7 days with daily sampling for BacT/ALERT cultures and bacterial quantification. After implementation, from August 2017 to December 2019, a total of 223 156 pools and 39 725 apheresis units and 5310 outdated PCs were screened. Since March 2018, cocomponents associated to false-positive results have been released to inventory.Results: In the development study, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Serratia marcescens, and Staphylococcus aureus were detected at concentrations of at least 0.01 colony-forming units (CFUs)/mL at 24 hours postinoculation. However, Staphylococcus epidermidis was detected at concentrations of less than 0.16 CFUs/mL only more than 48 hours postinoculation. After implementation, 776 (0.35%) and 303 (0.77%) initial-positive results and 201 (0.09%) and 16 (0.04%) confirmed-positive results were obtained for pools and apheresis units, respectively, predominantly with Cutibacterium acnes. Other organisms included staphylococci, streptococci, Klebsiella oxytoca and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. One nonfatal reaction involving a 7-day pool contaminated with S. epidermidis occurred. Approximately, 1-in-1000 false-negative screening results were obtained during testing of outdated PCs. Approximately 1000 cocomponents associated with false-positive results were released into inventory. Combined PC outdating at Canadian Blood Services and hospitals was reduced from 18.9% to 13.1%.Conclusion: Screening of 7-day PCs increased bacterial detection mainly of anaerobes and reduced outdating. The incidence of septic transfusion events has decreased approximately threefold. A longer surveillance period is needed to evaluate the value of anaerobic cultures and residual safety risk. Background: Accidental acetaminophen overdoses are associated with substantial morbidity and health care costs. In Canada, updated labelling standards were implemented in October 2009 and September 2016, with the intent of communicating risks of overdose and facilitating product identification and safe use, respectively. Full compliance with the 2016 standards was expected by March 2018. We sought to explore whether these changes affected rates of hospital admission for accidental acetaminophen overdose.Methods: We conducted a population-based study of hospital admissions for accidental acetaminophen overdose in 9 Canadian provinces and 3 Canadian territories between Apr. 1, 2014, and Mar. 31, 2020. We used interventional autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models to evaluate the impact of the updated labelling standards on rates of hospital admission for accidental acetaminophen overdose. In secondary analyses, we studied intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and hospital admissions for accidental acetaminophen overdose involving opioids.Results: Monthly rates of hospital admission for accidental acetaminophen overdose were essentially unchanged over the study period (0.21 and 0.22 cases per 100 000 population in April 2004 and March 2020, respectively). We found no association between changing labelling standards and trends in rates of hospital admission for accidental acetaminophen overdose (October 2009 p = 0.2, September 2016 p = 0.7 and March 2018 p = 0.2). Similarly, labelling changes did not have an impact on admissions involving ICU admission and concomitant opioid poisoning.Interpretation: Modifications to product labels did not reduce the rate of acetaminophen-related harm. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can facilitate the uptake of limiting or inaccessible nutrients by plants. However, the importance of AMF for invasive plants under phosphorus (P) limitation is poorly well understood because of the presence of non-focal microorganisms, such as endophytes or rhizosphere bacteria. In this study, we investigated how an invasive clonal plant Solidago canadensis benefits from the AMF Glomus intraradices by using a completely sterile culturing system, which is composed of aseptic seedlings, a pure AMF strain, and a sterile growth environment. We found that the colonization rate, abundance, and spore production of AMF in the insoluble P treatment was more than twice as much as in the available P treatment. Plant above-ground growth was enhanced almost 50% by AMF in the insoluble P treatment. Importantly, AMF were able to facilitate P acquisition by the plant in insoluble P conditions, allowing plants to have lower investment into below-ground biomass and higher benefit/return for above-ground biomass. This study demonstrated the important contribution that AMF make to plants in phosphate-deficient environments eliminating interference from non-focal microorganisms. Our results also suggest that interaction with AMF could contribute to the invasiveness of clonal plant S. canadensis in a resource-deficient environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In Canada, the deferral for men who have sex with men (MSM) has been progressively reduced from a permanent deferral for MSM since 1977, to 5 years, 1 year, and, most recently, 3 months. We estimated human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) residual risk and compliance with the MSM time deferral after each change. Methods: Four anonymous online compliance surveys were carried out before and after each change. HIV incidence and prevalence were monitored from 2010 to 2021. Residual risk was estimated using the incidence‐window period model. Results: Human immunodeficiency virus prevalence, incidence, and residual risk did not change with incrementally shorter MSM deferrals. The residual risk per million donations post 3‐month deferral was 0.05 (0.001–0.371). Men with temporally remote MSM history became eligible and, therefore, compliant as the deferral periods decreased (Cochran‐Armitage p value = <.0001). However, the percentage of men with MSM history in the last 3 months with the indefinite deferral in place was similar to the percentage noncompliant, while the 3‐month deferral was in place. MSM donors did not report high‐risk behaviors for which they would otherwise be deferred in any survey. Following the change, an estimated 4467 MSM per year were eligible to donate, an increase from 2501 estimated eligible MSM donors following the change to the 1‐year deferral. Conclusion: With progressively shorter MSM deferral periods, HIV residual risk was unchanged. The proportion of male donors with deferrable MSM history remained low, while those with temporally remote MSM history became eligible, increasing the number of eligible MSM donors. A new ski resort village plan proposed for Lake Louise in Banff National Park triggered intense opposition at public hearings in 1972. Local proponents, backed by Imperial Oil, had entered into agreements to expand services at Lake Louise, which led to federal public consultations. We investigate Parks Canada's early public consultation process and how it was institutionalized in federal policy making from 1964 to 1979. Public debate was significant and influenced political decisions in the Village Lake Louise controversy. The National and Provincial Parks Association of Canada, Bow Valley Naturalists, Environmental Law Association, mountain clubs, academics, and others advocated for protection as conservation lobbyists and the Government of Alberta also objected to the proposal, leading Minister Jean Chretien to halt the plan. It was a win for citizens, environmentalists, and ecological integrity as Village Lake Louise debates became Canada's town hall. Past environmental protection is relevant to civil society and public space in a moment of new approvals for massive ski hill industry expansions in national parks. Representative subsets of global climate models (GCMs) are often used in climate change impact studies to account for uncertainty in ensemble climate projections. However, the effectiveness of such subsets has seldom been assessed for the estimations of either the mean or the spread of the full ensembles. We assessed two different approaches that were employed to select 5 GCMs from a 20-member ensemble of GCMs from the CMIP5 ensemble for projecting canola and spring wheat yields across Canada under RCP 4.5 and 8.5 emission scenarios in the periods 2040–2069 and 2070–2099, based on crop simulation models. Averages and spreads of the simulated crop yields using the 5-GCM subsets selected by T&P and KKZ approaches were compared with the full 20-GCM ensemble. Our results showed that the 5-GCM subsets selected by the two approaches could produce full-ensemble means with a relative absolute error of 2.9–4.7% for canola and 1.5–2.2% for spring wheat, and covers 61.8–91.1% and 66.1–80.8% of the full-ensemble spread for canola and spring wheat, respectively. Our results also demonstrated that both approaches were very likely to outperform a subset of randomly selected 5 GCMs in terms of a smaller error and a larger range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Babesia microti has gained a foothold in Canada as tick vectors become established in broader geographic areas. B. microti infection is associated with mild or no symptoms in healthy individuals but is transfusion‐transmissible and can be fatal in immunocompromised individuals. This is the first estimate of clinically significant transfusion‐transmitted babesiosis (TTB) risk in Canada. Study design and methods: The proportion of B. microti‐antibody (AB)/nucleic acid amplification test (NAT)‐positive whole blood donations was estimated at 5.5% of the proportion of the general population with reported Lyme Disease (also tick‐borne) based on US data. Monte Carlo simulation estimated the number and proportion of infectious red cell units for three scenarios: base, localized incidence (risk in Manitoba only), and donor study informed (prevalence from donor data). The model simulated 1,029,800 donations repeated 100,000 times for each. Results: In the base scenario 0.5 (0.01, 1.75), B. microti‐NAT‐positive donations would be expected per year, with 0.08 (0, 0.38) recipients suffering clinically significant TTB (1 every 12.5 years). In the localized incidence scenario, there were 0.21(0, 0.7) B. microti‐NAT‐positive donations, with 0.04 (0, 0.14) recipient infections (about 1 every 25 years). In the donor study informed scenario, there were 4.6 (0.3, 15.8) B. microti‐NAT‐positive donations expected, and 0.81 (0.05, 3.14) clinically significant TTB cases per year. Discussion The likelihood of clinically relevant TTB is low. Testing would have very little utility in Canada at this time. Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) seroprevalence studies bridge the gap left from case detection, to estimate the true burden of the COVID-19 pandemic. While multiple anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoassays are available, no gold standard exists. Methods: This serial cross-sectional study was conducted using plasma samples from 8999 healthy blood donors between April-September 2020. Each sample was tested by four assays: Abbott SARS-Cov-2 IgG assay, targeting nucleocapsid (Abbott-NP) and three in-house IgG ELISA assays (targeting spike glycoprotein, receptor binding domain, and nucleocapsid). Seroprevalence rates were compared using multiple composite reference standards and by a series of Bayesian Latent Class Models. Result: We found 13 unique diagnostic phenotypes; only 32 samples (0.4%) were positive by all assays. None of the individual assays resulted in seroprevalence increasing monotonically over time. In contrast, by using the results from all assays, the Bayesian Latent Class Model with informative priors predicted seroprevalence increased from 0.7% (95% credible interval (95% CrI); 0.4, 1.0%) in April/May to 0.7% (95% CrI 0.5, 1.1%) in June/July to 0.9% (95% CrI 0.5, 1.3) in August/September. Assay characteristics varied over time. Overall Spike had the highest sensitivity (93.5% (95% CrI 88.7, 97.3%), while the sensitivity of the Abbott-NP assay waned from 77.3% (95% CrI 58.7, 92.5%) in April/May to 64.4% (95% CrI 45.6, 83.0) by August/September. Discussion: Our results confirmed very low seroprevalence after the first wave in Canada. Given the dynamic nature of this pandemic, Bayesian Latent Class Models can be used to correct for imperfect test characteristics and waning IgG antibody signals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Culture shapes children's memories. However, scant attention has been given to the influence of culture on specific memory stages. Thus, we conducted two controlled experiments to examine cultural differences in memory recall at immediate and delayed retrieval phases. In Studies 1 and 2 (n = 217), 7‐ to 10‐year‐old Chinese and Euro‐Canadian children watched a story involving both social‐ and individual‐focused scenarios. Participants then recalled the story immediately afterwards (Study 1) and 5–7 days later (Studies 1 and 2). Findings reveal that Chinese children accurately reported more details from the social‐focused events than did their Euro‐Canadian counterparts in the immediate interview, and this result was replicated after a delay in both studies. Moreover, as expected, within‐country comparisons showed that Euro‐Canadian children had better memory for individual‐ than for social‐focused events in both studies. Chinese children, however, showed better memory for social‐ than for individual‐focused events only in the immediate interview in Study 1; their delayed retrieval was not affected by event focus. These findings reveal that cultural variations in memory are evident in both immediate and delayed retrieval. Implications for future research are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The deferral for men who have sex with men (MSM) was reduced from a permanent deferral for MSM if even one time since 1977 to progressively shorter time deferrals of 5 years and 1 year in Canada. We assessed compliance with these deferrals and the impact on safety at Canadian Blood Services.Study Design and Methods: Three anonymous online compliance surveys of male whole blood donors were carried out before and after implementation of successive changes. HIV rates and incidence were monitored from January 1, 2011, to August 14, 2018.Results: Participation rates in the consecutive surveys were 49.7% before implementation, 36.3% after 5 years and 36.3% after 1 year. There was no difference before versus after implementation in male donors with MSM history in the past year (0.21%, 0.19%, 0.24%; p = 0.70). The percentage of eligible MSM donors increased (0.13%, 0.66%, 1.21%; p < 0.0001), with approximately 2500 eligible MSM donors with the 1-year deferral in place. HIV rates were less than 0.6 per 100,000 donations and unchanged after each policy change (p = 0.14 for trend). Incidence remained unchanged at 0.22 per 100,000 person-years before implementation, 0.54 per 100,000 after 5-year deferral, and no incident cases after 1-year deferral (p = 0.55).Conclusion: Progressively shorter time deferrals had no impact on noncompliance of MSM with a male partner in the past year. Contrary to modeling predictions, shorter time deferrals had no impact on HIV rates or incidence. There was a modest increase in eligible MSM in the donor pool after each shorter time deferral. Background: Transfusion medicine standards in Canada state that adult recipients can be transfused with cryoprecipitate of any ABO group, however, not all hospitals follow this guideline. There is a paucity of data on cryoprecipitate anti‐A/B levels to reinforce standards. Study Design and Methods: Manual tube antibody titration was performed on 7 units of group O plasma and the corresponding cryosupernatant plasma and cryoprecipitate. IgG/IgM levels were determined by nephelometry. Additionally, 10 cryoprecipitate each from groups A, B, and O were similarly assessed. From the antibody titer distribution among these samples, the probability of making a pool of cryoprecipitate with a titer ≥1:100 was calculated using bootstrap analysis. Results: Anti‐A/B titers in cryoprecipitate were equivalent to those in corresponding plasma; partitioning of anti‐A/B activity into cryoprecipitate was not observed. Average IgM concentration was higher in cryoprecipitate than in plasma (P <.01). However, no correlation between IgM levels and anti‐A/B titers was established. Among 30 cryoprecipitates from routine blood bank inventory, the median antibody titer and mode were 1:32 and 1:16, respectively. Of the samples tested, 4 of 30 and 9 of 30 had titers above 1:100 and 1:50, respectively. The probability of transfusing an adult dose of cryoprecipitate (pool of 10 cryoprecipitate) with a titer higher than 1:100 was calculated to be less than 1 in 3 million. Conclusions: This study provides strong evidence to support current Canadian transfusion medicine standards on the safety of transfusion of cryoprecipitate without the need for blood group matching in adult recipients.
