This study explored the effectiveness of a speech and language intervention that was designed to be culturally responsive and adapted to provide explicit language instruction. Participants included all 774 kindergarten students from a mid-sized rural school district in British Columbia. Seventy-seven students screened as at risk received the intervention, and the remaining students participated in the regular kindergarten curriculum. Results indicated statistically significant effects of the intervention on language and vocabulary skills. No differential effects were observed between students of Indigenous and non-Indigenous heritage. Results are discussed in terms of culturally responsive and explicit instruction for early language development. (Contains 1 figure and 2 tables.)

Based on challenges with the traditional model of school psychology, response to intervention (RTI) has been advanced as a model of special education eligibility decision making and service delivery that may address the drawbacks of the traditional models of assessment and result in improved outcomes for students. In this article, the RTI model is described, and the research base describing its rationale and outcomes is reviewed. Finally, a description of how RTI has been and can continue to be adopted and researched in Canada is provided. (Contains 4 figures.)

Examines three conceptual and methodological problems characteristic of research on patterns of aging in rural versus urban environments. These include (1) lack of consistency and clarity in definitions of rurality and in the application of those definitions and (2) inconsistency in the way in which rural-urban comparisons are made and representative communities selected. To assess the extent to which Canadian undergraduate baccalaureate nursing programs have incorporated Canadian competencies for Registered Nurses in primary care into their curricula. Canadian competencies for Registered Nurses in primary care have several benefits, including their ability to inform primary care education in undergraduate nursing programs and to assist in building a robust primary care nursing workforce. We conducted a national cross-sectional survey of undergraduate baccalaureate nursing programs (n = 74). The survey was conducted between April-May 2022. We used a modified version of the "Community Health Nurses' Continuing Education Needs Questionnaire". Respondents indicated their level of agreement on a 6-point Likert scale with 47 statements about the integration of the competencies in their program (1 = strongly disagree; 6 = strongly agree). The response rate was 51.4%. The overall mean across the six competency domains was 4.73 (SD 0.30). The mean scores of each domain ranged from 4.23 (SD 1.27) for Quality Assurance, Evaluation and Research to 5.17 (SD 0.95) for Communication. There are gaps in how these competencies are included in undergraduate education programs and opportunities to strengthen education for this growing workforce in Canada. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents an overview of the December 2004 issue of the "TESL Canada Journal." This issue presents six full-length articles which focus on the aspects of professionalism. The authors of the first article exercise their professional responsibilities as members of TESL Manitoba and TEAM. They have proposed their findings as a mandate for the development of the field of English language teaching in Canada. The second article has examined the position of the teachers of English as a second language on the spectrum between unskilled workers and highly trained professionals.

The biodiversity crisis is paralleled by a decline in the ability of Indigenous peoples to practice traditional livelihoods, cultures and languages. The world's oceans and coastal communities face such threats, prompting increasing interest in establishing conservation measures. Systematic conservation planning (SCP) is a structured approach to establish conservation measures with clearly defined objectives, such as protected areas. Many Indigenous peoples are resurging to reclaim and protect some of their traditional lands and revitalize their cultures as rights holders. SCP goals and Indigenous goals could thus align. This research documents the Indigenous-led marine conservation planning process of the Songhees Nation to reclaim and assert stewardship around the Tl'ches archipelago near Victoria, Canada. We compare the Songhees marine conservation planning approach to SCP approaches. The Songhees approach showed similarities to SCP in the initial scoping phase of the marine conservation planning, in the review and compiling of existing data prior to the collection of data as well as the focus on focal species. The Songhees approach to marine conservation planning also differed from SCP as it included one zone only, did not involve any other stakeholders, and tried to account for the whole social-ecological system in one process step. This research provides useful insights and a guidance to help interested Indigenous communities worldwide to conduct their own marine conservation planning. • This research documents an Indigenous marine conservation planning (MCP) approach. • It highlights the uniqueness of the approach and compares it to other systematic planning studies. • It provides guidance to other Indigenous peoples to conduct their own MCP.
