The 2016 wildfires in Alberta, Canada, created numerous challenges for families with children under five years of age, due to the limited postdisaster access to early childhood development (ECD) programs, resources, and supports. In the immediate aftermath of the wildfires, families struggled to balance recovery activities with childcare responsibilities, which adversely affected their overall recovery. In this article, we discuss three main challenges experienced by families with young children after the wildfires: inadequate access to childcare services, a lack of availability and funding for ECD programs and resources, and limited long-term recovery support for families. Because of their early developmental stage, young children are especially vulnerable to the adverse effects of a disaster and dependent on their adult caregivers, thus it is essential to understand the unique challenges families face after a disaster. Children's prolonged exposure to the stress of a disaster environment is compounded when parents have limited access to crucial programs, resources, and supports during the most crucial periods of rebuilding and recovery. The findings we report in this article provide insights into the critical role disaster and emergency preparedness and planning play in ECD service delivery and infrastructure, and into the need for recovery efforts to "build back better." We advise all levels of government to consider ECD and the provision of child care to be essential services during natural disasters, crises, and pandemics. We further advise them to make the financial investment needed to ensure sustainable recovery operations, including infrastructure, provision of ECD services, and hiring of educators who can deliver high-quality, affordable early learning and child care in postdisaster environments.

Background: It is important to identify students who would benefit from early interventions to reduce harmful drinking patterns and associated consequences. the Brief Young Adult Alcohol Consequences Questionnaire (B-YAACQ) could be particularly useful as a screening tool in university settings. Objectives. The present study examined the utility of the B-YAACQ to distinguish among students at-risk for problematic alcohol use as measured by the AUDIT. Methods: A sample of 6382 students (mean age=20.28, SD=3.75, 72.2% females) from seven countries (i.e., U.S., Canada, South-Africa, Spain, Argentina, Uruguay, England) completed the B-YAACQ, the AUDIT and different measures of alcohol use. Results: ROC analyses suggested that a cutoff score of 5 maximized the YAACQ's discrimination utility to differentiate between students at low versus moderate/high risk in the total sample and across countries (except in Canada, where the cutoff was 4). In addition, a cutoff of 7 differentiated between students at low/moderate versus high risk in the total sample, while cutoffs of 10, 9, 8 and 7 differentiate between students at low/moderate versus high risk in Uruguay, U.S and Spain (10), Argentina (9), England (8), and Canada and South-Africa (7), respectively. Students classified at the three risk levels (i.e., low, moderate and high) differed in age (i.e., a younger age was associated with higher risk) and drinking patters (i.e., higher drinking frequency, quantity, binge drinking and AUDIT and B-YAACQ scores in the higher risk groups). Conclusions: This study suggest that the B-YAACQ is a useful tool to identify college students at-risk for experiencing problematic patterns of alcohol use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), also referred to as King salmon, is a premium aquaculture species farmed in New Zealand and to a small extent in western Canada. Despite the high research investment in the 50s and 60s, literature on nutrition on chinook salmon from recent years is sparse, particularly when compared to other salmonid aquaculture species, such as Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). To improve fish productivity, it is essential to provide specific and efficient diets based on satisfying chinook salmon requirements for nutrients and energy and adapting these to life-stage, season, and production variables. Diet specifications for chinook salmon have to date largely been based on knowledge derived from other salmonid species and may not be optimised for chinook salmon. Thus, there is a lack of knowledge in some fundamental areas. This review explores the production status and literature related to the macro and micronutrient requirements, and general nutrition of chinook salmon. In doing so it compares these requirements to other farmed salmonids to understand some of the differences between species and highlights the main gaps in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To determine the: 1) impact of pre-operative femoral nerve block(PreopFNB) on: a) pain; b) opioid use; and c) early post-operative mobilization relative to usual care(CONTROL) and 2) feasibility of a definitive randomized clinical trial(RCT).Methods: This pilot RCT, performed in a Canadian tertiary center, compared PreopFNB to CONTROL in 73 participants aged ≥65 years, who a) were ambulatory pre-hip fracture, b) had Mini Mental Status Examination(MMSE) score ≥13 and c) provided consent(direct/proxy). Participants were randomized to PreopFNB or CONTROL using 2 PreopFNB:1 CONTROL(48 PreopFNB:25 CONTROL) allocation. Pain, opioid use and early post-operative mobilization were compared between groups. Inclusion of those with cognitive impairment and PFNB treatment fidelity were also assessed.Results: The PreopFNB group was slightly older than CONTROL(mean ±SD: 79.9 ± 8.9 versus 76.8 ± 9.0; p = 0.15) with more males(21[42%] versus 5[22%]; p = 0.04). The overall mean MMSE score was ≥24. Mean pain scores were not significantly different between groups at rest(p = 0.17), with activity(p = 0.21) or non-verbal assessment(p = 0.79). Opioid use(oral morphine equivalents) was non-significantly higher and more variable in CONTROL than PreopFNB pre-operatively(Median [25,75 quartiles] 13.1[0,398] versus 7.5[0,125]) and post-operatively(15.0[0,950] versus 10.0[0,260])(p = 0.28). On day 1 post-operative, 40(87%) PFNB and 17(71%) CONTROL participants mobilized(p = 0.10).Conclusion: We found similar reported pain between groups. Although not significant, opioid use was higher and more variable in CONTROL and more PreopFNB patients mobilized day 1 post-operatively. Participants with cognitive impairment were not frequently enrolled. With modification, a definitive RCT is feasible and would inform pain management after hip fracture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: ACCESS Open Minds (ACCESS OM) is a pan‐Canadian project aimed at improving youth mental healthcare. This paper describes implementation of the ACCESS OM objectives for youth mental health service transformation within a pre‐existing Fish Net Model of transformative youth mental healthcare service in the First Nation community of Eskasoni, on Canada's east coast. Methods: We describe an adaptation of the ACCESS OM service transformation objectives through the complementary blending of Indigenous and Western methodologies. This concept of "Two‐Eyed Seeing" is illustrated as central to engaging youth in the community and attending to their mental health needs and wellness. Results: The ACCESS OM Eskasoni First Nation Youth Space acts as a central location for the site team and its activities, which expand into the rest of the community to facilitate early identification of youth in need. Rapid access to care is promoted via barrier‐free availability through a central intake crisis and referral centre, and ease of contact through social media and other modalities. Youth are given the choice between standard Western mental health services, or Indigenous methods of improving well‐being, or a combination of the two. Conclusions: The ACCESS OM framework has shown early results of being a positive addition to the Eskasoni community. Local leadership and community buy‐in are identified as key factors to success. Further exploration, research, and evaluation of this transformation is ongoing. The quality of parent-child interactions and family relationships has a powerful influence on children's development and well-being. The International Parenting Survey (IPS) is a brief, web-based survey developed to provide a cross-national, community-level, population snapshot of the experiences of parents related to raising children. The IPS was developed as a planning tool to assist policy makers and community agencies plan, implement, and evaluate parenting programs and as a tracking tool to evaluate parenting support programs in different countries. We report the preliminary psychometric properties of the IPS on various domains of measurement in an international sample of over 9,000 parents. Moderate to high reliabilities were obtained for all domains of measurement. High internal consistency reliabilities (α = .88-.97) were obtained for the domains of children's behavior and emotional maladjustment, for parental self-efficacy, parental distress and parental beliefs. Moderate levels of reliabilities (α = .52-.83) were obtained for domains of parental consistency, coercive parenting, positive encouragements, and parent-child relationships. Overall, the measure appears to have satisfactory reliability justifying further psychometric validation studies in population level studies of parenting. Abstract Soluble organically-complexed manganese(III) (Mn(III)-L) is an intermediate species in the manganese cycle. The reactivity of the complex(es) depends on the abundance and nature of the ligand(s), as well as its physicochemical environment. Currently, the strength of Mn(III)-L complexes is assessed by their ability to react either directly with a porphyrin complex, using the kinetics of its competitive ligand exchange reactions, or after being reduced to manganese(II). We present a new three-step technique that quantifies part of the Mn(III)-L pool which may represent a bioavailable and reactive fraction of the complexes. This technique relies on 1) ligand exchange of the dissolved complexes in a filtered field sample with the siderophore desferrioxamine-B (DFOB), 2) chromatographic separation and concentration of manganese(III)-DFOB from the aqueous matrix, and 3) quantification of the naturally ligated manganese(III) that was outcompeted by DFOB (Mn(III)-L DFOB) at low concentrations by flow injection UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The formation of an extractable Mn(III)-L DFOB complex provides an operationally-defined benchmark by which to assess biological interactions and better understand the cycling of manganese(III) in the environment. The technique, with a detection limit of 0.09 nM, was applied to water samples collected in the St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE) and adjacent Saguenay Fjord in Canada. Mn(III)-L DFOB was ubiquitous at our study sites, but its concentration was low relative to total dissolved manganese (dMn T) and particulate MnO 2. Spatial variations of the dMn T speciation within the Saguenay Fjord suggest that Mn(III)-L forms from the reduction of MnO 2. Likewise, variations of the dMn T speciation along a dissolved oxygen gradient in the SLE leads us to believe that Mn(III)-L DFOB likely represents a fraction of the total Mn(III)-L that cycles more readily in estuarine and marine systems. Introduction: Many carbonyls are produced from the combustion of tobacco products and many of these carbonyls are harmful or potentially harmful constituents of mainstream cigarette smoke. One carbonyl of particular interest is acrolein, which is formed from the incomplete combustion of organic matter and the most significant contributor to non-cancer respiratory effects from cigarette smoke. Sheet-wrapped cigars, also known as "little cigars," are a type of tobacco products that have not been extensively investigated in literature.Methods: This study uses standard cigarette testing protocols to determine the acrolein yields from sheet-wrapped cigars. Sheet-wrapped cigar and cigarette products were tested by derivatizing the mainstream smoke with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) solution and then quantifying the derivatives using conventional analytical systems.Results: The results demonstrate that sheet-wrapped cigars can be tested for acrolein yields in mainstream smoke using the same methods used for the evaluation of cigarettes. The variability in the sheet-wrapped cigars and cigarettes under the International Organization for Standardization smoking regimen is statistically similar at the 95% confidence interval; however, increased variability is observed for sheet-wrapped cigar products under the Health Canada Intense (CI) smoking regimen.Conclusion: The amount of acrolein released by smoking sheet-wrapped cigars can be measured using standard smoking regimen currently used for cigarettes. The sheet-wrapped cigars were determined to yield similar quantity of acrolein from commercial cigarette products using two standard smoking regimens.Implications: This article reports on the measured quantity of acrolein from 15 commercial sheet-wrapped cigars using a validated standard smoking test method that derivatizes acrolein in the mainstream smoke with DNPH solution, and uses Liquid Chromatography/Ultra-Violet Detection (LC/UV) for separation and detection. These acrolein yields were similar to the levels found in the smoke from 35 commercial cigarette products measured in the same manner. Although sheet-wrapped cigar data were slightly more variable than those found for the cigarette data, this article reports that the production of acrolein is similar to cigarettes. The results demonstrate that sheet-wrapped cigars can be tested for acrolein yields in mainstream smoke using the same methods used for the evaluation of cigarettes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine current approaches and challenges to teaching ethics in entry-level Canadian physiotherapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) programs.Methods: Educators responsible for teaching ethics in the 28 Canadian PT and OT programs (n = 55) completed an online survey.Results: The quantity of ethics teaching is highly variable, ranging from 5 to 65 h. Diverse obstacles to ethics teaching were reported, relating to the organization and structure of academic programs, student issues and the topic of ethics itself. Specific challenges included time constraints, large class sizes, a lack of pedagogical tools adapted to teaching this complex subject, a perceived lack of student interest for the subject and a preference for topics related to clinical skills. Of note, 65% of ethics educators who participated in the survey did not have any specialized training in ethics.Conclusion: Significant cross-program variation in the number of hours dedicated to ethics and the diversity of pedagogical methods used suggests that there is little consensus about how best to teach ethics. Further research on ethics pedagogy in PT and OT programs (i.e. teaching and evaluation approaches and effectiveness of current ethics teaching) would support the implementation of more evidence-based ethics education.Implications for RehabilitationEthics educators in Canadian PT and OT programs are experimenting with diverse educational approaches to teach ethical reasoning and decision-making to students, including lectures, problem-based learning, directed readings, videos, conceptual maps and clinical elective debriefing, but no particular method has been shown to be more effective for developing ethical decision-making/reasoning. Thus, research on the effectiveness of current methods is needed to support ethics educators and programs to implement evidence-based ethics education training.In our survey, 65% of ethics educators did not have any specialized training in ethics. Ensuring that educators are well equipped to support the development of necessary theoretical and applied competencies can be promoted by initiatives including the creation of tailored ethics teaching and evaluation tools, and by establishing communities of practice among ethics educators.This survey identified heterogeneity in ethics teaching content, format and duration, and location within the curriculum. In order to be able to assess more precisely the place accorded to ethics teaching in PT and OT programs, careful mapping of ethics content inside and across rehabilitation programs is needed – both in Canada and internationally. Objectives: Comprehensive therapy for vestibular schwannomas has changed dramatically over the past fifty years. Previously, neurosurgeons were most likely to treat these tumors via an independent surgical approach. Currently, many neurosurgeons treat vestibular schwannomas employing an interdisciplinary team approach with neuro-otologists and radiation oncologists. This survey aims to determine the current treatment paradigm for vestibular schwannomas among American and Canadian neurosurgeons, with particular attention to the utilization of a team approach to the surgical resection of these lesions. Methods: A seventeen part survey questionnaire was sent by electronic mail to residency trained members of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons currently practicing in Canada or the United States. Questions were divided into groups regarding physician background, overall practice history, recent practice history, opinions on treatment paradigms, and experience with an interdisciplinary team approach. Results: Seven hundred and six responses were received. The vast majority of neurosurgeons surgically resect vestibular schwannomas as part of an interdisciplinary team (85.7%). Regional variations were observed in the use of an interdisciplinary team: 52.3% of responding neurosurgeons who surgically treat vestibular schwannomas without neurootologists currently practice in the South (no other region represented more than 15.4% of this group, p = 0.02). Surgeons who have treated >50 vestibular schwannomas show a trend towards more frequent utilization of an interdisciplinary approach than less experienced surgeons, but this did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: The majority of neurosurgeons in the United States and Canada surgically resect vestibular schwannomas via an interdisciplinary approach with the participation of a neurootologist. Neurosurgeons in the South appear more likely to surgically treat these tumors alone than neurosurgeons in other regions of the U.S. and Canada. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A significant obstacle in evaluating mitigation strategies for flaring and venting in the upstream oil and gas industry is the lack of publicly available data on the chemical composition of the gas. This information is required to determine the economic value of the gas, infrastructure and processing requirements, and potential emissions or emissions credits, all of which have significant impact on the economics of such strategies. This paper describes a method for estimating the composition of solution gas being flared and vented at individual facilities, and presents results derived for Alberta, Canada, which sits at the heart of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. Using large amounts of raw data obtained through the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board, a relational database was created and specialized queries were developed to link production stream data, raw gas samples, and geography to create production-linked gas composition profiles for approximately half of the currently active facilities. These were used to create composition maps for the entire region, to which the remaining facilities with unknown compositions were geographically linked. The derived data were used to compute a range of solution gas composition profiles and greenhouse gas emission factors, providing new insight into flaring and venting in the region and enabling informed analysis of future management and mitigation strategies. Abstract: Global flaring and venting of gas associated with petroleum production is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions and airborne pollutants that has proven difficult to mitigate. This work examines the technical and economic potential for flaring and venting mitigation in a mature oil and gas producing region of the world. Using detailed monthly production data spanning the years 2002–2008 for 18,203 active production facilities, combined with geographic information system pipeline data, reservoir gas composition data, and cost data derived from industry sources, a case study was constructed to explore the technical and economic viability of further mitigation of flaring and venting associated with upstream oil and gas production in Alberta, Canada. Calculations were performed to evaluate the feasibility of mitigation via collection and compression of gas into pipelines to connect into existing pipeline networks. Four main calculation scenarios were considered, and for each, a series of Monte-Carlo analyses were performed to evaluate uncertainties and sensitivities to key calculation parameters. In all scenarios, the results reveal potentially significant opportunities for economically viable flare and vent mitigation that would yield substantial reductions in CO2 equivalent emissions. Because of the highly skewed distribution of gas volumes flared and vented at individual facilities, the results also show that solutions for comparatively small numbers of the largest facilities can offer large reductions in overall emissions from the sector. These results suggest that in a concerted effort to minimize carbon emissions in the upstream oil and gas industry, there is potential for significant near-term reductions using existing technology while research and development continues on more advanced methods such as carbon capture and storage. The environmental sciences/studies movement, with more than 1000 programs at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, is unified by a common interest-ameliorating environmental problems through empirical enquiry and analytic judgment. Unfortunately, environmental programs have struggled in their efforts to integrate knowledge across disciplines and educate students to become sound problem solvers and leaders. We examine the environmental program movement as a policy problem, looking at overall goals, mapping trends in relation to those goals, identifying the underlying factors contributing to trends, and projecting the future. We argue that despite its shared common interest, the environmental program movement is disparate and fragmented by goal ambiguity, positivistic disciplinary approaches, and poorly rationalized curricula, pedagogies, and educational philosophies. We discuss these challenges and the nature of the changes that are needed in order to overcome them. In a subsequent article (Part 2) we propose specific strategies for improvement. Environmental studies and environmental sciences programs in American and Canadian colleges and universities seek to ameliorate environmental problems through empirical enquiry and analytic judgment. In a companion article (Part 1) we describe the environmental program movement (EPM) and discuss factors that have hindered its performance. Here, we complete our analysis by proposing strategies for improvement. We recommend that environmental programs re-organize around three principles. First, adopt as an overriding goal the concept of human dignity-defined as freedom and social justice in healthy, sustainable environments. This clear higher-order goal captures the human and environmental aspirations of the EPM and would provide a more coherent direction for the efforts of diverse participants. Second, employ an explicit, genuinely interdisciplinary analytical framework that facilitates the use of multiple methods to investigate and address environmental and social problems in context. Third, develop educational programs and applied experiences that provide students with the technical knowledge, powers of observation, critical thinking skills and management acumen required for them to become effective professionals and leaders. Organizing around these three principles would build unity in the EPM while at the same time capitalizing on the strengths of the many disciplines and diverse local conditions involved. Chemical castration refers to the use of medication to reduce male testosterone to pre-pubertal levels. Since the mid-20th century, reports have detailed this practice in attempts to control pathological sexual behaviour. In 2006, the Canadian Federal Court of Appeal ruled it constitutional for the National Parole Board to require that recidivist sex offenders, if found to be long-term offenders, be chemically castrated under their conditions of release. This paper examines the chemical castration of recidivist sex offenders in Canada through a review of long-term offender hearings reported between 1997 and 2009. The practice is analyzed from ethical, medical and legal perspectives. It is concluded that chemical castration of sex offenders is ethically problematic, that evidence for its effectiveness in preventing recidivism is limited and of poor quality and that judges should avoid excessive reliance on chemical castration when deciding to grant conditional release to recidivist sex offenders. Population growth for mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), and presumably other upland nesting ducks, in the Prairie Pothole Region of the United States and Canada is most sensitive to nest success, and nest success is most strongly influenced by predation. We evaluated the efficacy of reducing predator populations to improve nest success of upland nesting ducks on township-sized (93.2 km²) management units in eastern North Dakota, USA, during 2005-2007. We monitored 7,489 nests on 7 trapped and 5 nontrapped sites. Trappers annually removed an average of 245 predators per trapped site, and we found nest success to be 1.4-1.9 times greater on trapped sites than nontrapped sites, depending on year. Nest success was greater on both trapped and nontrapped sites when compared with a study conducted in the same areas in the mid-1990s, likely because of changes in red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and coyote (Canis latrans) population dynamics. Nests initiated midseason had higher daily survival rates (DSR) than those initiated earlier or later in the season. Daily survival rates for nests in the middle of the nesting cycle were higher than for nests that were early in laying or late in incubation. Nests near the periphery of trapped sites had slightly higher DSRs than nests in the center of trapped sites. The study identifies the relationship between amiodarone use and pacemaker insertion for atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. Based on results involving 1,005 patients from 17 centers in the United States and Canada, it was found that amiodarone use was associated with an increased risk of pacemaker insertion. A significant risk for women was detected over men at 95 percent confidence level. After adjustments were made for weight, body mass index (BMI), amiodarone dosage and use of other antiarrhythmic drugs, the risk was still evident. It was concluded that increased pacemaker insertion use is greater in women when related to amiodarone use for AF, regardless of weight or BMI.

• Social workers play a critical role in delivering evidence-based parenting programs. • Knowing more about factors that influence social workers' sustained delivery is needed. • This mixed-method study surveyed an international sample of 301 social workers. • Consistency between qualitative and quantitative findings was observed. • Qualitative findings provided more information on the most significant influencers. Social workers play a vital role in both the child welfare systems and the dissemination of evidence-based parenting programs aimed at reducing child maltreatment rates at scale. However, notable knowledge gap remains on factors influencing social workers' program delivery. Using the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program as an example, the present study aims to investigate the facilitators (what aided the implementation), barriers (what hindered the implementation), and enablers (what changes would help implementation) of social workers' implementation of an evidence-based parenting program. An international sample of 301 social workers trained in Triple P between 2012 and 2020 from six countries were included (i.e., U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Denmark). A mixed-method approach was used which combined item-level regression analyses with quantitative and thematic analysis with qualitative data. Organizational/team/peer support and program resources were identified as strong themes in both quantitative and qualitative analyses. Engaging disadvantaged parents and online delivery were identified as a significant challenge for social workers in qualitative analysis. The findings of this study contribute to a better understanding of the factors influencing social workers' implementation of parenting programs. Implications of the present findings were discussed. Tournaisian-age failure of marginal lacustrine sediments, and their bulk collapse into an inland rift-basin lake in the Moncton Subbasin, Canada, led to the entrainment of rare, almost complete, three-dimensionally preserved non-woody trees. Preservation of these unique fossils from the Albert Formation was a consequence of contemporaneous seismicity. Synsedimentary structures include an array of soft-sediment deformational features and a field of cross-cutting sand boils indicating multiple seismic shocks >4.6 Mw. This tectonically controlled event, entombing trees whose novel growth form is both evolutionarily and ecologically transitionary and unlike other Paleozoic plants, is a one-off in the paleobotanical record. Background: In order to examine the impact of disasters on adolescent mental health, this study compared population mental health survey data from two communities in Alberta, Canada: Fort McMurray, which experienced a major natural disaster, and Red Deer, which did not. Methods: Data from 3070 grade 7–12 students from Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada (collected in 2017, 18 months after the 2016 wildfire) was compared with data from 2796 grade 7–12 students from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada (collected in 2014). The same measurement scales were used for both surveys. Both of these cities have populations of approximately 100,000, and both cities are located in Alberta, Canada. For this reason, Red Deer is an appropriate non-disaster impacted community to compare to the disaster impacted community of Fort McMurray. Results: The results of this comparison demonstrate that mental health symptoms were statistically significantly elevated in the Fort McMurray population when compared to the control population in Red Deer. This occurred for scores consistent with a diagnosis of depression (31% vs. 17%), moderately severe depression (17% vs. 9%), suicidal thinking (16% vs. 4%), and tobacco use (13% vs. 10%). Consistent with there being major mental health impacts from the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire, self-esteem scores and quality of life scores were also statistically significantly lower in Fort McMurray. While the rates of anxiety disorder were similar (15% vs. 16%), the mean scores on the anxiety scale were slightly higher, with this difference reaching statistical significance. There were no statistical differences in the rates or scores for alcohol or substance use. Conclusions: Our results are consistent with previous findings showing a significant negative impact of disasters on many aspects of adolescent mental, with a particular increase in symptoms related to depression and suicidal thinking. These findings highlight first, the need to identify adolescents most at risk of developing psychiatric symptoms after experiencing the trauma of disaster and second, the importance and necessity of implementing short and long term mental health intervention programs specifically aimed at adolescents, in order to help mitigate the negative effects of disasters on their mental health. With a global gas flaring volume of ∼140 billion cubic meters, flares are an important source of particulate emissions; however, very little is known about the physical and morphological properties of these particle emissions. To study these properties, a laboratory pipe flare producing a buoyant turbulent diffusion flame was used which allowed controlled experiments on flames up to ∼3 m tall. Three flare diameters (38.1, 50.8, and 76.2 mm) were used in this study with fuel exit velocities of 0.5, 0.9, and 1.5 m/s. 'Light', 'medium', and 'heavy' fuel compositions (consisting of C1 to C4 alkanes, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen in concentration representative of flares in the Alberta, Canada upstream oil and gas sector) were used, where heavier compositions refer to a greater concentration of higher order alkanes. Size distributions of soot particles were measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer. Mass-mobility relationship and effective density of particles were determined using a tandem arrangement of a differential mobility analyzer, a centrifugal particle mass analyzer and a condensation particle counter. Morphology and nano-structure of the particles were studied using transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. Results showed that the particle median diameter and concentration increased as the fuel composition was changed from light to medium to heavy. On the other hand, particle morphology, measured by the relationships between particle mass vs. mobility (or effective density) and primary particle size vs. particle aggregate size, was independent of fuel composition, flow rate, or flare size and was in good agreement with previously reported values for that of soot particles from different internal combustion engines. Previously developed relations between effective density and primary particle size work well for the soot particles of this study. Raman spectroscopy indicated slightly lower D1/G ratios (more graphitic content) for the heavier fuels. • Physical properties of flare soot did not depend on flare diameter or exit velocity. • Soot number concentration and median diameter changed with flare composition. • Soot morphology was independent of flare diameter, exit velocity, and composition. • The D1/G ratio of soot particles changed slightly with flare composition. • TEM data and DMA-CPMA data provide consistent information on soot morphology. Planktonic and parasitic sea lice ( Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus clemensi ) were examined at a commercial Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) farm near the Broughton Archipelago, British Columbia (BC) from December 2012 through March 2014. Parasitic sea lice were counted on a minimum of 20 fish in three pens per month. Surface seawater salinity ranged from 19 to 35 PSU. Parasite abundance was highest in winter, peaking in January 2013 at 6.5 ind fish − 1 (motiles were 14.3% L. salmonis , 85.7% C. clemensi ) and February 2014 at 3.3 ind fish − 1 (motiles were 96.5% L. salmonis , 3.5% C. clemensi ). SLICE® (emamectin benzoate) administered in both winters rapidly reduced parasitic sea lice numbers. Monthly parasite abundance was significantly correlated with the density of sea lice larvae (nauplius and copepodid stages) (r 2 = 0.65, p = 0.01) suspended in the water column of the salmon pens. Larval density was calculated monthly via triplicate vertical plankton hauls within six pens, as well as at a reference site approximately 150 m away. Larval density at the farm peaked in January 2013 (mean ± SE: 1.3 ± 0.6 ind m − 3 ) and January 2014 (1.0 ± 0.3 ind m − 3 ). Sea lice nauplii were found in all samples at the reference site in densities similar to those observed within pens. Overall, the majority (87.8%) of sea lice in the plankton samples were nauplii, with copepodids comprising 5.2% and motile stages 1.8%. Surprisingly, the remaining 5.2% of planktonic sea lice were chalimus stages of C. clemensi , and were found both before and after SLICE® administration. For comparison, L. salmonis nauplius densities were estimated from established relationships between water temperature and salinity, the number of female lice present, and the approximate number of fish on site. These estimated densities were significantly ( t = 3.41, p = 0.009) higher than actual nauplius densities observed at the farm, suggesting that sea lice larvae quickly dispersed from the farm after hatching. This study provides information on all sea lice stages present throughout an Atlantic salmon production cycle in BC (through two SLICE® treatments) and the first report of planktonic chalimus stages of C. clemensi , a commercially-relevant though relatively under-studied sea louse species. Global flaring volume exceeds 140 billion m3 annually and flares are a key source of particulate air pollution. During flowback operations subsequent to fracturing of a well, droplets of flowback water—with varying levels of dissolved salts—can be entrained in the flared gas. Despite the widespread prevalence of fracturing, very little is known about the properties of particle emissions from such flares. To study these properties, we used a laboratory pipe flare producing a turbulent diffusion flame without and with entrained droplets. Entrained droplets of deionized water, sodium chloride solution, and solutions representing two typical flowback waters in Canada (Cardium and Duvernay) were used. Three different gas compositions (consisting of C1 to C7 alkanes, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen) representative of flares in the upstream oil and gas sector in Alberta, Canada were studied. The results showed that the salt in the entrained flowback droplets increased the particle concentration by about one order of magnitude by forming freshly nucleated salt particles. Moreover, soot concentration increased as a result of entrained salt. Effective density results showed that small particles (<150 nm mobility diameter) were mainly salt, while large particles (>300 nm) were mostly soot—a result also confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Electron micrographs showed that the majority of particles were either individual salt particles or internally-mixed soot-salt particles. The inorganic salt particles mainly consisted of Na and Cl, the two most abundant elements in flowback water. Raman spectroscopy indicated that the salt had much less (or no) impact on graphitic nanostructure of soot, while the fuel blend had a significant effect. The results of this study are significant as they reveal that current emission inventories based on flaring of gases only may underestimate soot emissions from flares with entrained droplets. This article describes the regulatory and evidence requirements necessary for the authorization of antimethanogenic feed additives (AMFA) aimed at mitigating enteric methane (CH 4 ) emissions from ruminants. It outlines the legislation and legal procedures in Australia, Canada, the European Union, New Zealand, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States as illustrative examples, offering insights for applicants seeking authorization. Additionals objectives are to highlight consequential similarities and differences in regulations and evidence requirements and offer recommendations for scientists and applicants. The pivotal role that scientific evidence plays in the evaluation and approval processes is emphasized, along with the need for applicants and researchers to understand and adhere to the specific regulations of each jurisdiction. Feed additives are regulated to ensure their safety for animals, humans, and the environment, and to verify their effectiveness for the intended use of enteric CH 4 mitigation. Regulations cover various aspects, including ingredient safety, manufacturing practices, product labeling, and the establishment of permissible limits for certain substances to ensure their safe use in animal feed. Compliance with these regulations is mandatory, and they are enforced by regulatory agencies within each jurisdiction, aiming to protect animal health, promote food safety, and prevent misleading claims and unsafe practices. The assessment processes involve evaluating scientific evidence submitted by applicants, along with evaluations of quality control procedures, and record-keeping practices. The major difference in regulations is that each jurisdiction developed unique criteria to legally classify AMFA, making it challenging to satisfy all legal classifications with a single set of criteria for scientific evidence. However, numerous similarities and a universal reliance on the concept of intended use indicate consistency across all jurisdictions on the need for robust evidence for efficacy, safety, and product quality and documentation even if the type, size, duration, and location of the studies they require differ. Recommendations are made for both scientists and applicants, emphasizing the importance of designing, conducting, and reporting scientific evaluations transparently, using validated standards and methods, and communicating with regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with regulations and evidence requirements., (The Authors. The evolution of arborescence in Devonian plants, followed by their architectural radiation in the Carboniferous, is a transition fundamental to Earth-system processes and ecological development. However, this evolutionary transition in trees is based on preserved trunks, of which only a few known specimens possess crowns. We describe Mississippian-aged (Tournaisian) trees with a unique three-dimensional crown morphology from New Brunswick, Canada. The trees were preserved by earthquake-induced, catastrophic burial of lake-margin vegetation. The tree architecture consists of an unbranched, 16-cm-diameter trunk with compound leaves arranged in spirals of ∼13 and compressed into ∼14 cm of vertical trunk length. Compound leaves in the upper ∼0.75 m of the trunk measure >1.75 m in length and preserve alternately arranged secondary laterals beginning at 0.5 m from the trunk; the area below the trunk bears only persistent leaf bases. The principal specimen lacks either apical or basal sections, although an apex is preserved in another. Apically, the leaves become less relaxed toward horizontal and are borne straight at an acute angle at the crown. The compact leaf organization and leaf length created a crown volume of >20-30 m 3 . This growth strategy likely maximized light interception and reduced resource competition from groundcover. From their growth morphology, canopy size, and volume, we propose that these fossils represent the earliest evidence of arborescent subcanopy-tiering. Under the Global Methane Pledge, Canada is developing oil and gas sector methane regulations targeting 75% reductions from 2012 levels by 2030. Without measured baselines and inventories, such policies are ultimately unverifiable and unenforceable. Using the major oil and gas producing province of Saskatchewan as a case study, we derive first-ever measurement-based methane inventories for the region and comprehensively model previous emissions back to the 2012 baseline. Although relative reductions of 23-69% have likely occurred, the dispersion of modeled possibilities and the high emissions from continuing production illustrate the limits of this approach as a meaningful policy metric. Moreover, nearly 90% of apparent reductions are explained by decreased production at heavy oil facilities, suggesting emissions have potential to rebound if production resumes. By contrast, derived measurement-based methane emissions intensities facilitate quantitative assessment and show that despite any past reductions, Saskatchewan's 0.41 ± 0.03 g/MJ intensity remains among the highest in North America. This highlights how relative reduction targets absent measured baselines and inventories are inherently futile and risk rewarding high emitters while obscuring ongoing mitigation potential. Ultimately, required global methane reductions will only be achieved by adopting objectively and independently verifiable emission metrics while measuring and tracking progress toward a net zero future.

Despite the challenges facing Indigenous youth and their communities due to historical and contemporary institutionalised racism in Canada, communities are drawing on the richness of their own histories to reassert their cultural heritage. Doing so supports mental health outcomes of young people in particular, as highlighted in a compelling body of research. The question facing many communities, however, is how they can facilitate such child and youth engagement in order to support related positive mental health outcomes. This article reports on findings from a Participatory Action Research (PAR) study conducted in a First Nations community in Unama'ki (Cape Breton), Atlantic Canada. The study, Spaces & Places , was a partnership between the community-based mental health service provider (Eskasoni Mental Health Services, EMHS), eight community youth (14-18 years old), and a team of academics. Situated within a resilience framework, the team explored the ways in which the community facilitated, or restricted, youth civic and cultural engagement. Foregrounded against a strong legacy of cultural reassertion within the community, findings highlight the core resilience-promoting resources that support positive youth development. Additionally, findings demonstrate how these resources provide meaningful support for youth because of the way in which they are intertwined with one another. Furthermore, cultural engagement is underpinned by the Two-eyed Seeing model, supporting youth to integrate their own culture with settler culture in ways that work best for them. Findings support community-based service structures, and underscore the importance of community resilience in the effective support of Indigenous children and youth.

Cold Heavy Oil Production with or without Sand, CHOP(S), facilities produce a significant portion of Canada's conventional oil. Methane venting from single-well CHOPS facilities in Saskatchewan, Canada was measured (i) using Bridger Photonics' airborne Gas Mapping LiDAR (GML) at 962 sites and (ii) on-site using an optical mass flux meter (VentX), ultrasonic flow meter, and QOGI camera at 11 sites. The strong correlation between ground measurements and airborne GML supported subsequent detailed analysis of the aerial data and to our knowledge is the first study to directly test the ability of airplane surveys to accurately reproduce mean emission rates of unsteady sources. Actual methane venting was found to be nearly four times greater than the industry-reported levels used in emission inventories, with ∼80% of all emissions attributed to casing gas venting. Further analysis of site-total emissions revealed potential gaps in regulations, with 14% of sites appearing to exceed regulated limits while accounting for 61% of measured methane emissions. Finally, the concept of marginal wells was adapted to consider the inferred cost of methane emissions under current carbon pricing. Results suggest that almost a third of all methane is emitted from environmentally marginal wells, where the inferred methane cost negates the value of the oil produced. Overall, the present results illustrate the importance of independent monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) to ensure accuracy in reporting and regulatory compliance, and to ensure mitigation targets are not foiled by a collection of disproportionately high-emitting sites.

Long-standing reports of open sores on the hind legs of moose (Alces alces) have been recorded in Alaska (as well as Canada, Europe, and Michigan), eliciting concerns about causes and infection. We used histological and genomic methods to investigate the sores from 20 adult moose on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. We paired this with thermal imagery and molt scoring of adult moose to further describe sore formation and understand its timing. Severe, ulcerative and eosinophilic dermatitis was found in all moose with sores present, and microfilariae within intraepidermal pustules were additionally found in four samples. Genetic analysis of sores from moose revealed a previously unknown genetic lineage of Onchocerca. Adult moose molt and lose their barrier of protection against flies in June and July during peak fly activity, leaving them vulnerable and allowing the development of sores. In summary, our results indicate that the cause for the sores on the hindleg of moose is a previously unknown genetic lineage of Onchocerca, probably transmitted by black flies, in timing with the molt cycle of adult moose. Objective: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is an orofacial pain disorder that is more prevalent in females than males. Although an increasing number of studies point to sex differences in chronic pain, how sex impacts TN patients' journeys to care has not been previously addressed. This study sought to investigate sex differences in patients' journeys to diagnosis, referral, and treatment of TN within a large national context., Methods: Patients with classic TN (n = 100; 50 females and 50 males) were randomly selected through chart reviews at the largest surgical treatment center for TN in Canada for a cross-sectional study. Statistical tests, including Welch's t-test, the chi-square test, Pearson's correlations, and analyses of covariance, were conducted with Python., Results: Key discrepancies between sexes in access to care were identified. Females had a significantly longer referral time interval (average 53.2 months vs 20.4 months, median 27.5 months vs 11.0 months, p = 0.018) and total time interval (average 121.1 months vs 67.8 months, median 78.0 months vs 45.2 months, p = 0.018) than males, despite reporting higher pain intensity at referral. Although medically intolerant patients had a significantly shorter referral time interval than medically tolerant patients (average 13.0 months vs 41.0 months, median 6.0 months vs 17.0 months, p < 0.001), medically tolerant females had a significantly longer referral time interval than medically tolerant males (average 59.9 months vs 21.7 months, median 30.0 months vs 12.0 months, p = 0.017). No statistically significant differences were detected between the sexes for diagnostic time interval (average 63.3 months vs 43.0 months, median 24.0 months vs 24.0 months, p = 0.263) or treatment time interval (average 4.6 months vs 4.7 months, median 4.0 months vs 3.0 months, p = 0.986)., Conclusions: Critical sex differences in patients' journeys to TN surgical treatment were identified, with females enduring considerably longer referral timelines and expressing significantly greater pain intensity than males at referral. Taken together, our findings suggest the presence of unconscious bias and discrimination against females and highlight the need for expediting TN treatment referral for female TN patients.

Variation among populations in life history and intrinsic population characteristics (i.e., population diversity) helps maintain resilience to environmental change and dampen interannual variability in ecosystem services. As a result, ecological variation, and the processes that generate it, is considered central to strategies for managing risks to ecosystems in an increasingly variable and uncertain world. However, characterizing population diversity is difficult, particularly in large and remote regions, which often prevents its formal consideration in management advice. We combined genetic stock identification of archived scale and tissue samples with state-space run-reconstruction models to estimate migration timing and annual return abundance for eight geographically and genetically distinct Chinook salmon populations within the Canadian portion of the Yukon River. We found that among-population variation in migration timing and return abundances resulted in aggregate return migrations that were 2.1 times longer and 1.4 times more stable than if they had composed a single homogeneous population. We then fit state-space spawner-recruitment models to the annual return abundances to characterize among-population diversity in intrinsic productivity and population size and their consequences for the fisheries they support. Productivity and carrying capacity varied among populations by approximately 2.4-fold (2.9 to 6.9 recruits per spawner) and three-fold (8800 to 27,000 spawners), respectively. This diversity implies an equilibrium trade-off between harvesting of the population aggregate and the conservation of individual populations whereby the harvest rate predicted to maximize aggregate harvests comes at the cost of overfishing ~40% of the populations but with a relatively low risk of extirpating the weakest ones. Our findings illustrate how population diversity in one of the largest salmon-producing river basins in the world contributes to fishery stability and food security in a region where salmon have high cultural and subsistence value. Importance: There are few published studies prospectively assessing pharmacological interventions that may delay prostate cancer progression in patients undergoing active surveillance (AS)., Objective: To compare the efficacy and safety of enzalutamide monotherapy plus AS vs AS alone in patients with low-risk or intermediate-risk prostate cancer., Design, Setting, and Participants: The ENACT study was a phase 2, open-label, randomized clinical trial conducted from June 2016 to August 2020 at 66 US and Canadian sites. Eligible patients were 18 years or older, had received a diagnosis of histologically proven low-risk or intermediate-risk localized prostate cancer within 6 months of screening, and were undergoing AS. Patients were monitored during 1 year of treatment and up to 2 years of follow-up. Data analysis was conducted in February 2021., Interventions: Randomized 1:1 to enzalutamide, 160 mg, monotherapy for 1 year or continued AS, as stratified by cancer risk and follow-up biopsy type., Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary end point was time to pathological or therapeutic prostate cancer progression (pathological, ≥1 increase in primary or secondary Gleason pattern or ≥15% increased cancer-positive cores; therapeutic, earliest occurrence of primary therapy for prostate cancer). Secondary end points included incidence of a negative biopsy result, percentage of cancer-positive cores, and incidence of a secondary rise in serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels at 1 and 2 years, as well as time to PSA progression. Adverse events were monitored to assess safety., Results: A total of 114 patients were randomized to treatment with enzalutamide plus AS and 113 to AS alone; baseline characteristics were similar between treatment arms (mean [SD] age, 66.1 [7.8] years; 1 Asian individual [0.4%], 21 Black or African American individuals [9.3%], 1 Hispanic individual [0.4%], and 204 White individuals [89.9%]). Enzalutamide significantly reduced the risk of prostate cancer progression by 46% vs AS (hazard ratio, 0.54; 95% CI, 0.33-0.89; P = .02). Compared with AS, odds of a negative biopsy result were 3.5 times higher; there was a significant reduction in the percentage of cancer-positive cores and the odds of a secondary rise in serum PSA levels at 1 year with treatment with enzalutamide; no significant difference was observed at 2 years. Treatment with enzalutamide also significantly delayed PSA progression by 6 months vs AS (hazard ratio, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.53-0.97; P = .03). The most commonly reported adverse events during enzalutamide treatment were fatigue (62 [55.4%]) and gynecomastia (41 [36.6%]). Three patients in the enzalutamide arm died; none were receiving the study drug at the time of death. No deaths were considered treatment-related., Conclusions and Relevance: The results of this randomized clinical trial suggest that enzalutamide monotherapy was well-tolerated and demonstrated a significant treatment response in patients with low-risk or intermediate-risk localized prostate cancer. Background: The LATERAL trial validated the safety and efficacy of the thoracotomy approach for implantation of the HeartWare HVAD System, leading to Food and Drug Administration approval. We sought to analyze 24-month adverse event (AE) rates, including a temporal analysis of the risk profile, associated with the thoracotomy approach for the HVAD system., Methods: AEs from the LATERAL trial were evaluated over 2 years postimplant. Data was obtained from the Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support database for 144 enrolled United States and Canadian patients. Temporal AE profiles were expressed as events per patient year., Results: During 162.5 patient years of support, there were 25 driveline infections (0.15 events per patient year), 50 gastrointestinal bleeds (0.31 events per patient year), and 21 strokes (0.13 events per patient year). Longitudinal AE analysis at follow-up intervals of <30 and 30 to 180 days, and 6 to 12 and 12 to 24 months revealed the highest AE rate at <30 days, with a decrease in total AEs within the first 6 months. After 6 months, most AE rates either stabilized or decreased through 2 years, including a 95% overall freedom from disabling stroke., Conclusions: Two-year follow-up of the LATERAL trial revealed a favorable morbidity profile in patients supported with the HVAD system, as AE rates were more likely to occur in the first 30 days postimplant, and overall AE rates were significantly reduced after 6 months. Importantly, 2-year freedom from disabling stroke was 95%. These data further support the improving AE profile of patients on long-term HVAD support.
