Many women experiencing homelessness and intimate partner violence (IPV) often do not use formal support services due to barriers such as finances, inaccessibility, controlling partners, and stigma. The current literature lacks studies that examine the formal service experiences of women who have undergone both homelessness and IPV. Therefore, the current study used a qualitative-dominant design and explored the formal service needs of these women, barriers and facilitating factors associated with accessing services, and how the women's identities affected their experiences with formal services. Interviews with 10 women were conducted, and a reflexive thematic analysis was conducted using a critical feminist and intersectionality lens. The most common factors that led to homelessness were conflict and precarious circumstances leading to housing instability. Common barriers were systemic, psychological, dismissal, minimization, and financial barriers. The most common needs were health, finances, and basic necessities. The most common facilitating factors were support networks and resilience, growth, and proactivity. The social positionings most commonly affecting their experiences were class and race/ethnicity. Women living with HIV face high social and structural inequities that place them at heightened risk for gender-based violence and mental health conditions, alongside health services access inequities, with almost no research done to better understand access to mental health services. This study therefore examined social and structural factors associated with barriers to counselling or therapy amongst women living with HIV who experienced lifetime physical and/or sexual violence in Metro Vancouver, Canada. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression using generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used and adjusted odds ratios (AOR) and 95% Confidence Intervals ([95%CIs] are reported). From Sept/15-Aug/21, 1695 observations were collected among 279 participants. In multivariable analysis, with all variables measured in the last six months, experiencing any barriers to counselling or therapy was significantly associated with having thoughts or attempts of suicide (AOR:1.64 [1.02–2.66]), lacking coverage for health care (AOR:1.60 [1.17–2.18]), and everyday discrimination (AOR:1.02 [1.00-1.04]) and anticipated (AOR:1.57 [1.04–2.36]), enacted (AOR:1.48 [1.02–2.16]) or internalized (AOR:1.53 [1.07–2.20]) HIV stigma. Older adults are especially unlikely to seek mental health services, and internalized stigma is a key reason why. However, little research has investigated which older adults are particularly likely to have stigma influence help-seeking. To address this, we tested whether perceived control (PC) moderates an internalized stigma model in which public stigma is internalized as self-stigma, which negatively predicts help-seeking attitudes and help-seeking intentions. We employed moderated mediation analysis of cross-sectional, secondary data from 348 psychologically distressed Canadian adults aged 65 years and older. Participants completed an online survey that included measures of public stigma of help-seeking, self-stigma of help-seeking, help-seeking attitudes, conditional help-seeking intentions, psychological distress, and PC. PC emerged as a moderator of the internalized stigma model. Those lower in PC were more likely to have public stigma negatively predict help-seeking intentions through the serial mediation of (a) self-stigma and (b) help-seeking attitudes. Further, those lower in PC were more likely to have public stigma internalized as self-stigma and more likely to have negative help-seeking attitudes predict lower help-seeking intentions. Finally, those lower in PC also had lower help-seeking intentions in the face of low levels of self-stigma. These results contribute to a nuanced understanding of which older adults are unlikely to seek help. Identifying PC as a moderator of the internalized stigma model suggests that interventions that enhance PC should protect against public stigma's internalization and improve help-seeking behaviors for older adults who need such help. Public Significance Statement: This study demonstrates that if distressed older adults are low in perceived control (i.e., they feel they have little control over influencing outcomes and events), they are more likely to avoid seeking psychological help when exposed to help-seeking stigma. This is important because older adults are the age demographic least likely to seek help for mental health concerns, and enhancing perceptions of control is one way to improve treatment seeking. LGBT2Q+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, Two-Spirit, queer, plus) Canadians face minority stressors that lead to higher mental health inequalities such as worse self-reported mental health and increased risk of mental health issues when compared to their heterosexual/straight and cisgender counterparts. However, there are within-group (intracategorical) differences within a community as large as LGBT2Q+ peoples. Guided by the Andersen Model of Healthcare Utilization, we sought to explore intracategorical differences in LGBT2Q+ Canadian predisposing, enabling, and need factors in mental health service utilization within the past year. Using data from the 2020 LGBT2Q+ Health Survey (N = 1542), modified Poisson logistic regression found that more polysexual respondents and trans/gender-diverse respondents were more likely to have utilized mental health services within the past year than their gay, lesbian, and cis male counterparts. As well, compared to White respondents, Indigenous respondents were more likely to have utilized mental health services, while other racialized respondents were associated with less utilization. Backwards elimination of Andersen model of healthcare utilization factors predicting mental health service utilization retained two predisposing factors (ethnoracial groups and gender modality) and two need factors (self-reporting living with a mood disorder and self-reporting living with an anxiety disorder). Results suggest that polysexual, trans and gender-diverse, and racialized LGBT2Q+ peoples have an increased need for mental health services due to increased specific minority stressors that cisgender, White, monosexual peoples do not face. In this study, we applied an intersectional framework to explore service providers' perspectives on the mental health needs of newcomer young men. We conducted focus groups and interviews with 26 service providers in Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver, Canada. Findings show that service providers made sense of young men's mental health needs and service access in the context of systems. We identified three interconnected themes: newcomer young men's senses of self in relation to macro-systems, including racism and economic marginalization; settling well as a determinant of mental health; and systems capacities and interdependent resilience. While service providers are engaged in cross-sectoral work in support of newcomer young men's mental health, this work is not being sufficiently supported. Further work is needed around cross-sector capacity bridging and advocacy, as well as the tailoring of services to young men without the assumption and reinforcement of gender stereotypes. Background: Youth mental health is a growing concern in research, practice, and policy. Practice standards, guidelines, or strategies provide an invisible infrastructure that fosters equity, quality, and safety, potentially addressing inconsistencies and more effectively attending to the mental wellness of Black youth as a particular population of concern. This scoping review aimed to address the following question: What standards exist for the delivery of mental health services to Black youth in community, primary care, and educational settings? Due to a limited initial search yield on publications about standards for the delivery of mental health services for Black youth population, our goal was then to identify and map mental health standards, recommendations, or guidelines for the delivery of mental health services using the same settings to all youth. Methods: Searches were conducted in various databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, SocINDEX, CINAHL, Gender Studies Database, Social Services Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Screening was independently conducted by two reviewers, with disagreements resolved by a third. Information extraction was performed by two independent reviewers. Results: Out of the 2,701 screened publications, 54 were included in this scoping review. Among them, 38.9% were published between 2020 and 2023, with 40.7% originating from the United States of America, 20.4% from the United Kingdom, and 13% from Canada. Concerning the settings, 25.9% of the publications focused on primary care, 24.1% on health care services, 20.4% on educational settings, and 3.7% on the community. Additionally, 25.9% were classified as general because recommendations were applicable to various settings. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (11.1%) was the most frequently considered specific condition, followed by autism spectrum disorder (9.3%) and depression (9.3%). However, 31.5% of the included references addressed mental health in general. Only three references provided specific recommendations for the Black population. Conclusions: Recommendations, guidelines, or standards for Black youth mental health services in community, primary care, or educational settings are scarce and limited to North American countries. This scoping review emphasizes the need to consider ethnicity when developing guidelines or standards to improve racial equity and reduce disparities in access to mental health services. Although addressing cultural and religious practices is important in providing mental health care, little research exists on understanding mental health issues of minority groups such as Muslim immigrant women. We employed an intersectional approach to examine beliefs and attitudes toward mental health issues among Muslim immigrant women in Canada. Four focus groups (21 participants) were conducted, and 101 surveys were collected in Ottawa, Canada. Three core themes emerged from thematic content analysis of focus group data that relate to participants' communication about: 1) stressors, 2) mental health care seeking, and 3) utilizing coping strategies. The survey data were analyzed using independent samples t-test and One-Way ANOVA, the results of which supported the qualitative findings that social stigma was an important obstacle preventing those women from seeking professional mental health services. Muslim women with South and Southeast Asian cultural/ethnic backgrounds were more likely to get help from professionals than those with African cultural/ethnic backgrounds. No group differences were found in age, family income, and employment status. Broadly, the findings underscore the importance of developing knowledge about the intersections among gender, religion, cultural identity, immigration status, and social stigma that influence beliefs and attitudes toward mental health issues. Specifically, the findings point to the need for an intersectional approach that offers a more nuanced understanding for tailoring mental health care to Muslim immigrant women's needs. School-based day treatment is an intensive mental health service for children with social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties. Research on day treatment is scarce and descriptions of program models are lacking. We used stimulated recall interviews to explore the moment-to-moment processes and strategies of classroom staff in a day treatment program for children in kindergarten and Grade 1 in Canada. Several processes and strategies used by staff emerged from the thematic analysis of the interviews. These included a process of individualized intervention, characterized by a continual and cyclical process of attunement, responsiveness, assessment, and evaluation, using a team-based approach, noticing positives about children, a climate of positive relationships, staff regulating their own emotions, being flexible while also being firm and consistent, and seeing children from a developmental perspective. More specific strategies used by staff (e.g., token economy) also emerged from the interviews. Implications for future research and teacher training are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Resilience has gained considerable attention in the mental health field as a protective factor that enables individuals to overcome mental health issues and achieve positive outcomes. A better understanding of resilience among Black youth is important for supporting the strengths and capacities within this population. This study seeks to investigate the correlates of resilience among Black youths in Canada. Methods: The survey was conducted online through REDCap between November 2022 and March 2023. The Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) was utilized to measure the capacity of participants to recover from or bounce back from stress. The BRS comprises six five-point Likert scale items. Data were analyzed employing a bivariate analysis followed by a multivariable binary logistic regression. Results: A total of 933 Black youths participated in the study across all Canadian provinces, of which 51.8% (483) identified as female and 46.7% (436) as male. Most respondents 51.3% (479) were between the ages of 16 and 20 years, with 28% (261) between the ages of 21 and 25 years, and 20.2% (188) between the ages of 26 and 30 years. In terms of employment, 62.0% (578) were working part-time, 23.7%, (220) were unemployed, and 9.8% (91) were working full-time. Over a third of participants (39.3%, 331) rated their mental health over the last month as good, with 34% (317) giving a rating of poor and 20.9% (195) giving a rating of fair. Black youths who were working part-time had four times greater odds of expressing low resilience (OR: 4.02; 95% CI: 1.82–11.29) than those who were not working. Black youth who ranked their mental health as poor were about nine times (OR: 8.65; 95% CI: 1.826–21.978) more likely to express low resilience. Conclusion: In this study, the Black youth participants reported relatively low resilience scores. Employment, physical health, and mental health status were factors that contributed to low resilience. Further studies are needed to examine the causal link between resilience and its dynamic effect on health outcomes among Black youth. More interventions are needed to make mental health services accessible to Black youth in a more culturally sensitive way with cross-culturally trained professionals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction/Objectives: Exposure to adverse social determinants of health (SDoH) in childhood is associated with poorer long-term health outcomes. Within structurally marginalized populations, there are disproportionately high rates of developmentally vulnerable children. The RICHER (Responsive, Intersectoral, Child and Community Health, Education and Research) social pediatric model was designed to increase access to care in marginalized neighborhoods. The purpose of this study was to describe the children and youth engaged with the RICHER model of service and characterize the needs of the population. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on children and youth who accessed primary care services through the program between January 1, 2018 and April 30, 2021. Basic descriptive data analysis was done using Stata v15.1. Results: A total of 210 charts were reviewed. The mean age in years at initial assessment was 6.32. Patients most commonly identified their race/ethnicity as Indigenous (33%) and 15% were recent newcomers to Canada. Evidence of at least 1 adverse SDoH was noted in 41% of charts; the most common included material poverty (34%), food insecurity (11%), and child welfare involvement (20%). The median number of diagnoses per patient was 4. The most frequently documented diagnoses were neurodevelopmental disorders (50%) including developmental delay (39%), ADHD (32%), and learning disability (26%). The program referred 72% of patients to general pediatricians and/or other subspecialists; 34% were referred for tertiary neuropsychological assessments and 35% for mental health services. Conclusions: Our data suggests that this low-barrier, place-based primary care RICHER model was able to reach a medically, developmentally, and socially complex population living in disenfranchised urban neighborhoods. Half of the patients identified in our review had neurodevelopmental concerns and a third had mental health concerns, in contrast to an estimated 17% prevalence for mental health, behavioral, or developmental disorders in North American general pediatric aged populations. This highlights the impact adverse SDoH can have on child health and the importance of working with community partners to identify developmentally vulnerable children and support place-based programs in connecting with children who may be missed, overlooked, or disadvantaged through traditional models of care. Background: Youth involved in child welfare have high rates of mental health problems and are known to receive mental health services from multiple settings. Still, gaps remain in our understanding of service use patterns across settings over the course of youth's involvement with child welfare. Objective: To examine the settings, reasons for contact, persons involved in initiating care, and timing of each mental health service contact for individuals over their involvement with the child welfare system, and to identify factors that predict multi-setting use. Methods: Data on mental health service contacts were collected retrospectively from charts for youth aged 11-18 (n=226) during their involvement with child welfare services in Montreal, Quebec. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine predictors of multi-setting mental health services use (defined as =3 settings). Results: 83% of youth had at least one mental health service contact over the course of their child welfare services follow-up, with 45% having multi-setting use. Emergency Departments were the top setting for mental health services. Youth with a higher number of placements and from neighborhoods with greater social and material deprivation were significantly likelier to use =3 mental health service settings over the course of their followup. Conclusion: These findings suggest a need for enhanced collaboration between youth-serving sectors to ensure that continuous and appropriate mental health care is being offered to youth followed by child welfare systems. The relationship between placement instability and multi-setting mental health service use calls for specific policies to ensure that young people do not experience multiple discontinuities of care. Background: There is an urgent need for culturally and contextually relevant mental health support for First Nations, Inuit and Métis youth. Objective: Our aim was to identify mental health and wellness services that are currently available to Indigenous youth across Canada. Methodology: As a first step, we conducted a web-based environmental scan of services tailored to Indigenous youth. Specific factors were examined for each program, including organization type and mission, types of services, and who provides services. Results: One hundred and seventeen programs were found, with 54% being non-profits and 34% being on-reserve. Four core features were identified. The first was a strengths-based focus, rather than a pathology/deficit-focus, in programs' vision and mission statements, reflected in words like wellness and resilience. The second (87% of included programs) was the integration of mental health services with a range of other services and supports (e.g., health, employment, housing). The third was the provision of land-based programming (in 34% of programs) such as camps or hunting. Such programs were framed as promoting wellness and healing and strengthening identity. The fourth was the role of community members without formal mental health professional training (in 42% of programs), for example, as youth workers or knowledge keepers. This stems not only from the dearth of specialists in many Indigenous settings, but also a valuing of Indigenous knowledge. Conclusion: These core features in mental health services for Indigenous youth may be promising avenues for communities seeking to strengthen the services they offer to First Nations, Inuit and Métis youth. As little is known about who uses specialty mental health clinics for persons with intellectual disabilities, this study aimed to identified caregiver concerns, clinical characteristics, and the relationship between these two constructs for referrals to such a clinic. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were applied to data derived from an intake questionnaire of all individuals referred to a specialty clinic in Canada over one year. The dataset consisted of 149 persons (55.7% male; 37.6% with autism; mean age: 28.8 years [SD: 13.2]). The two overarching categories of caregiver concerns were about: (1) aspects of clinic service, especially medication questions, and (2) specific emotional, behavioral, and diagnostic concerns, especially regarding emotional states. Caregivers of persons with autism had higher odds of medication concerns, but few other significant relationships were found. Further investigations about emotional difficulties and medication concerns, inclusive of perspectives of persons with intellectual disabilities, are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mental health is a complex, multidimensional concept that goes beyond clinical diagnoses, including psychological distress, life stress, and well-being. In this study, we aimed to use unsupervised clustering approaches to identify multidimensional mental health profiles that exist in the population, and their associated service-use patterns. The data source was the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey–Mental Health, linked to administrative health-care data; all Ontario, Canada, adult respondents were included. We used a partitioning around medoids clustering algorithm with Gower's proximity to identify groups with distinct combinations of mental health indicators and described them according to their sociodemographic and service-use characteristics. We identified 4 groups with distinct mental health profiles, including 1 group that met the clinical threshold for a depressive diagnosis, with the remaining 3 groups expressing differences in positive mental health, life stress, and self-rated mental health. The 4 groups had different age, employment, and income profiles and exhibited differential access to mental health-care services. This study represents the first step in identifying complex profiles of mental health at the population level in Ontario. Further research is required to better understand the potential causes and consequences of belonging to each of the mental health profiles identified. Most countries that provide for compulsory treatment for mental illness have a system by which this treatment is subject to independent legal oversight. Many countries use a special type of legal body for this purpose, called a mental health tribunal. Mental health tribunals have been subject to criticism from the points of view of both legal professionals and mental healthcare practitioners. Similar themes have manifested in these criticisms and have been consistent across several decades; legal professionals tend to focus on the tribunals being biased toward the medical opinion, and acting as a 'rubber stamp', whereas healthcare practitioners tend to focus on the adversarial nature of the trial, and the adverse effect that this can have on clients. However, empirical studies of the tribunals have not separated and directly compared these perspectives. This study aimed to explore this dynamic between lawyers' views and healthcare practitioners' views of mental health tribunals. We used thematic analysis to re-analyse data from two previous research studies, one which looked at lawyers' views of the tribunals, and one which looked at healthcare practitioners' views. Our results are divided into three themes: views of the problems with tribunals, professional roles in relationship to the tribunals and professional values demonstrated through these views and roles. We then consider if the 'clash of values' represented by these findings, and found in the literature, may pose an impediment to tribunal reform. This research explored the acceptability of an evidence-informed healthy relationships program with newcomer youth at three newcomer-serving agencies. Utilizing mixed methods in an embedded multiple case study design, qualitative and quantitative data were collected from seven facilitators, three administrators, and 20 youth recipients from three agencies. Findings suggested the program is promising in terms of acceptability and fit as facilitators and youth recipients enjoyed the program and felt the content was relatable to youths' experiences. Stakeholders also shared recommendations for tailoring content and activities to be more accessible and culturally meaningful for newcomer youth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This qualitative study was conducted to assess the responses of emerging adults with pre-existing mood and anxiety disorders to the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients from the First Episode Mood and Anxiety Program in London, Ontario, Canada, which treats individuals aged 16–29 with mood and anxiety disorders, were invited between April 16th – 21st, 2021 to complete a survey on their current emotional states, activities and coping. Responses were analyzed using thematic analysis. A thematic analysis identified the theme of "Languishing," among responses comprised of 3 organizing subthemes: "Dominance of Negative Emotion," "Waiting and Stagnating," and "Loss of Opportunity." This study suggests that emerging adults with pre-existing mental illness languished as the pandemic and associated restrictions persisted. Emphasis on "Coping through Intentional Action," a separate theme identified among those coping well, may be protective for this group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rates of hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) visits due to self-harm are important indicators for understanding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health. The objective of this study was to assess changes in self-harm hospitalizations and ED visits in Canada during the first two years of the pandemic. Rates of self-harm hospitalizations and ED visits during the pandemic were predicted based on regression analyses that modeled trends over a 5-year pre-pandemic period from fiscal year 2015 to 2019. The ratios of observed and model predicted (expected) rates in 2020 and 2021 were estimated separately to assess changes during the pandemic. Overall, rates of self-harm hospitalizations and ED visits were lower than expected during the pandemic, especially in 2020. In 2021, rates for females returned to near-expected levels; but they remained lower than expected for males. Females aged 10–14 years had higher than expected rates. The rate ratio of observed rate over expected rate was 1.2 in 2020 but further increased to 1.8 in 2021 for both hospitalizations and ED visits. Higher than expected rates were also observed among females aged 15–19 years in 2021 only. Suicide attempts and non-suicidal self-harm cases could not be distinguished. We observed lower than or close to expected rates of self-harm hospitalizations and ED visits during the pandemic for most population groups. This essay is an introduction to the thematic issue of Transcultural Psychiatry in honor of the work of Michael Chandler and Christopher Lalonde, developmental psychologists who made essential contributions to the study of identity and wellness among Indigenous youth in Canada and internationally. We outline their major contributions and illustrate the ways their innovative theory and methods have inspired decades of research, including the recent work presented in this issue, which addresses four broad themes: (1) the importance of a developmental perspective in mental health research; (2) the role of individual and collective continuity of identity in suicide prevention and mental health promotion; (3) Indigenous perspectives on trauma and resilience; and (4) Indigenous knowledge and values as a basis for culturally adapted and culturally grounded mental health services and interventions. Background: Health disparity and under-utilization of health services is prevalent among Asian refugees and migrants in Western countries and can profoundly impact health outcomes. Cambodians who survived extreme physical and emotional trauma during the genocides enacted by the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970's are particularly vulnerable to poor mental health outcomes decades later. Understanding the experiences of help-seeking and service use by displaced Cambodians in Western countries may help to design more effective and culturally safe healthcare services. Aims: To identify characteristics or factors associated with help seeking behaviours and service utilization of displaced Cambodians with mental health issues living in Western countries. Methods: This review followed the Arksey & O'Malley methodological framework for scoping reviews. Articles for review were identified through searches of nine electronic databases and manual searches. Relevant articles were selected, and data was extracted and synthesized into key themes. Results: This review included 15 articles. Most of the studies were conducted in the USA (n = 13) with one each conducted in Canada and New Zealand. Seven studies used qualitative interviews, five used a cross-sectional survey approach, two used a mixed-methods approach and one was a narrative review and case series. Key findings highlighted the impact of Cambodian cultural beliefs about mental health (guilt, shame and help-seeking stigma) on service utilization and the disconnect between Western models of service provision and preferred Cambodian ways of receiving support. Conclusion: Mental health services in Western countries are likely to be under-utilized by Cambodians due to a mismatch between health beliefs and Western models of care. Further investigation of the association between health beliefs and barriers to service utilization among adult Cambodian refugees is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Racial/ethnic disparities in the prevalence of psychiatric disorders have been reported, but have not accounted for the prevalence of the traits that underlie these disorders. Examining rates of diagnoses in relation to traits may yield a clearer understanding of the degree to which racial/ethnic minority youth in Canada differ in their access to care. We sought to examine differences in self/parent-reported rates of diagnoses for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety disorders after adjusting for differences in trait levels between youth from three racial/ethnic groups: White, South Asian and East Asian. Method: We collected parent or self-reported ratings of OCD, ADHD and anxiety traits and diagnoses for 6- to 17-year-olds from a Canadian general population sample (Spit for Science). We examined racial/ethnic differences in trait levels and the odds of reporting a diagnosis using mixed-effects linear models and logistic regression models. Results: East Asian (N = 1301) and South Asian (N = 730) youth reported significantly higher levels of OCD and anxiety traits than White youth (N = 6896). East Asian and South Asian youth had significantly lower odds of reporting a diagnosis for OCD (odds ratio [ OR ]East Asian = 0.08 [0.02, 0.41]; OR South Asian = 0.05 [0.00, 0.81]), ADHD (OR East Asian = 0.27 [0.16, 0.45]; OR South Asian = 0.09 [0.03, 0.30]) and anxiety (OR East Asian = 0.21 [0.11, 0.39]; OR South Asian = 0.12 [0.05, 0.32]) than White youth after accounting for psychiatric trait levels. Conclusions: These results suggest a discrepancy between trait levels of OCD, ADHD and anxiety and rates of diagnoses for East Asian and South Asian youth. This discrepancy may be due to increased barriers for ethnically diverse youth to access mental health care. Efforts to understand and mitigate these barriers in Canada are needed. Background: Helplines for post‐secondary students have emerged in the last decade to address the growing mental health needs and increasing help‐seeking of this population in ways that are responsive to their needs and preferences. However, there is no publicly available evidence of the effectiveness of helplines for post‐secondary students. Aims: This study evaluated the outcomes of Good2Talk, a helpline for post‐secondary students in Ontario, Canada, that offers professional counselling and information and referral services related to mental health, addictions and well‐being. Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, purposive sampling was used to recruit post‐secondary students who contacted Good2Talk between March 2016 and March 2020. Data were collected using post‐call questionnaires. Paired samples t‐tests and multinomial logistic regression analyses were used to analyse the data from 619 post‐secondary students. Results: Participants reported significant decreases in distress and increases in their ability to face their concern after contacting the helpline. Feeling understood and low pre‐call distress were significant predictors of low post‐call distress. Confidence in their abilities and having a better plan were significant predictors of high post‐call ability to face their concern. Age, gender and number of previous calls to the helpline were not significant predictors of positive outcomes. Most participants reported that they would recontact the helpline and recommend the helpline to a peer. Conclusion: The study indicates that counselling and information and referral services can be effective in reducing distress and increasing post‐secondary students' abilities to address their mental health concerns. Perinatal mental illness is an important public health issue, with one in five birthing persons experiencing clinically significant symptoms of anxiety and/or depression during pregnancy or the postpartum period. The purpose of this study was to develop a consensus-based model of integrated perinatal mental health care to enhance service delivery and improve parent and family outcomes. We conducted a three-round Delphi study using online surveys to reach consensus (≥75% agreement) on key domains and indicators of integrated perinatal mental health care. We invited modifications to indicators and domains during each round and shared a summary of results with participants following rounds one and two. Descriptive statistics were generated for quantitative data and a thematic analysis of qualitative data was undertaken. Study participants included professional experts in perinatal mental health (e.g., clinicians, researchers) (n = 36) and people with lived experience of perinatal mental illness within the past 5 years from across Canada (e.g., patients, family members) (n = 11). Consensus was reached and all nine domains of the proposed model for integrated perinatal mental health care were retained. Qualitative results informed the modification of indicators and development of an additional domain and indicators capturing the need for antiracist, culturally safe care. The development of an integrated model of perinatal mental health benefitted from diverse expertise to guide the focus of included domains and indicators. This collaborative paper explores the interconnections between climate change and the mental health and well‐being of Indigenous women in Western Canada. As the impacts of climate change intensify globally, vulnerable populations, particularly Indigenous communities, face disproportionate and multifaceted challenges. Centering on Indigenous women in Western Canada, this study explores how the climate crisis magnifies Indigenous communities' mental health disparities. Drawing from the Indigenist feminist research approach, the investigation focuses on Indigenous women's lived experiences, perceptions, and land‐based coping strategies amidst climate challenges, while simultaneously addressing the unique social, cultural, and historical factors influencing their mental health vulnerabilities within the context of climate change. The findings shed light on the complex relationships between environmental degradation, ongoing colonial impacts on traditional practices, and the mental well‐being of Indigenous women. Concluding with implications for policy and community‐led interventions, this research contributes to the discourse on the intersectionality of climate change impacts and mental health, particularly focusing on Indigenous women in Western Canada. In this qualitative community-based research, we explore service providers' use of activism-based resources and the supports they need to use activism as a tool to promote the mental health and wellbeing of racialized immigrant women. 19 service providers working in settlement and mental health services in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada, participated in one of three focus groups. We analyzed the data using a postcolonial feminist lens. Service providers' understandings of activism, strategies for promoting client mental health and wellbeing, and organizational barriers shaping their practice emerged as relevant. We offer recommendations for building activism-based resources, programs and services that include collaborations with racialized immigrant women communities and action at the organizational level to support service provider practice. This study examined the intersectional effects of gender, race, and socioeconomic status (SES) on mental health service utilization (MHSU) employing the intersectionality framework. Data was extracted from Canadian Community Health Survey 2015–2016 with a total of 85,619 sample. Covariate adjusted prevalence ratio (aPR) and the predicted probability of MHSU from intersectional analyses were estimated using Poisson regression with robust variance. The prevalence of MHSU was 15.04% overall, 19.61% among women, 10.27% among men, 21.56% among white women and 11.12% among white men. The study observed overall significant intersectional effect of SES by gender and race on MHSU. For instance, white men with the lowest income were more likely to have MHSU compared to their counterparts. Similarly, the predicted probability of MHSU decreased with the increase of SES that varied by gender and race. Two-way and three-way interactions also confirmed statistical significance (p-interaction < 0.05) of intersectional effect of gender, race, and SES. Background: Our previous study revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic posed mental health challenges to eye care professionals and students. The intent of this study was to identify the longitudinal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health among ophthalmic personnel and students. Additionally, the potential risk factors for mental health problems were investigated. Methods: A two-phase survey among eye care professionals and students in the USA and Canada was conducted. Phase 1 was administrated from June 23 to July 8, 2020, and has been published; Phase 2 was conducted from January 21 to February 2, 2021. A total of 824 eye care professionals and students participated in Phase 2, with a response rate of 44.1%. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were measured and calculated. Results: Compared with Phase 1, stress scores in Phase 2 were significantly reduced (P<0.001) although they were still higher than the pre-COVID level (P <.001). Scores for depression (P = 0.20) and anxiety (P = 0.40) showed no change, comparing Phase 2 to Phase 1. Reduction of stress scores significantly differed among occupations (P = 0.005); students had less reduction of stress than other eye care professionals (all P<0.05). Vaccination status was significantly associated with a reduction in stress scores (P = 0.04). Conclusions: With the continuing COVID pandemic, although stress level was reduced at 7-month follow-up, the mental health of eye care professionals was still impacted. In this population, COVID-19 vaccination was associated with fewer stress symptoms. These results indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic continues impacting mental health among eye care professionals, especially students. As a registered psychotherapist and art therapist, my clinical training was primarily based on North American clinical approaches influenced by traditional Euro and western‐centric clinical theories of human behavior. I completed my training feeling certain that traditional clinical mental health practices were not an appropriate fit for racialized communities and could have negative implications for their healing and well‐being. As clinicians, it is our moral obligation to support and enhance the quality of life for marginalized groups. We can do this by challenging our values and knowledge that have been defined and influenced by structures (i.e., education, training, etc.) embedded in these colonial teachings. For this paper, I used a heuristic self‐inquiry research method to investigate these concerns. I interviewed other racialized psychotherapists practicing in Turtle Island (currently mostly occupied by the political entities of Canada and the United States) with the aim to learn how and if decolonization can be used in therapy practice. With this research, I (1) identified a gap in care for racialized communities, (2) questioned if or how a decolonizing approach to care should be considered, (3) explored my discomfort with practitioners in the field that claim their position on decolonizing therapy, practice, and approaches, and lastly (4) propose other ways of knowing that can inform new ways of practicing therapy. The results of this research helped to problematize the language and use of decolonizing therapeutic practices while learning about other concepts that may be relevant yet distinct, such as principles of coloniality/decoloniality. Those of us, therapists or researchers, wanting to disrupt the current practice of therapy need to work together, share knowledge, and challenge each other, so that we can transform the way we practice as psychotherapists. This paper is my contribution to this conversation. Though mental health and substance use concerns often co-occur, few studies have characterized patterns of co-occurrence among adolescents in clinical settings. The current investigation identifies and characterizes these patterns among adolescents presenting to an outpatient mental health service in Ontario, Canada. Data come from cross-sectional standardized patient intake assessments from 916 adolescents attending an outpatient mental health program (January 2019–March 2021). Latent profile analysis identified patterns of substance use (alcohol, cannabis, (e-) cigarettes) and emotional and behavioral disorder symptoms. Sociodemographic and clinical correlates of these patterns were examined using multinomial regression. Three profiles were identified including: 1) low substance use and lower frequency and/or severity (relative to other patients in the sample) emotional and behavioral disorder symptoms (26.2%), 2) low substance use with higher emotional and behavioral disorder symptoms (48.2%), and 3) high in both (25.6%). Profiles differed in sociodemographic and clinical indicators related to age, gender, trauma, harm to self, harm to others, and service use. Experiences of trauma, suicide attempts, and thoughts of hurting others increased the odds of adolescents being in the profile high in both substance use and symptoms compared to other profiles. These findings further document the high rates of substance use in adolescents in mental health treatment and the profiles generally map onto three out of four quadrants in the adapted four-quadrant model of concurrent disorders, indicating the importance of assessing and addressing substance use in these settings. Major depressive disorders (MDD) and substance use disorders (SUDs) are commonly linked to disability, but there is a lack of research on the risk of disability among individuals who have both SUDs and MD in the general population. This study aimed to investigate the associated risk of disability in people with comorbid SUDs- specifically cannabis use disorder, alcohol use disorder, other drug (except cannabis) use disorder, and a major depressive episode using a nationally representative sample. The 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey- Mental Health (CCHS-MH) data were analyzed using multilevel logistic regression models. The survey included a nationally representative sample of Canadians aged 15 years and older (n = 25,113) residing in the ten Canadian provinces from January to December 2012. The diagnoses of major depressive episodes (MDE) and the SUDs were derived from the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria using a modified WHO-CIDI instrument, while disability was assessed using the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Score (WHODAS) 2.0. The strongest predictor of disability was found to be comorbidity. Individuals diagnosed with both a SUD and MDE were 4 to 9 times more likely to experience disability, depending on the substance used, compared to those without either diagnosis. The study's cross-sectional design limits causal inferences. Our research discovered that individuals who have both SUD and MDE are at a significantly higher risk of experiencing disability. This highlights the importance of integrating mental health and addiction services to mitigate the risk of disability and improve overall treatment outcomes. • Comorbidity is the key predictor of disability in Canadians with substance use disorder and major depression. • Coexisting substance use disorders and depression amplify disability risk by 4-9 times, while major depression alone increases it fivefold. • Disability risk rises with family history of mental disorders, chronic illness, widowed status, non-white ethnicity, and age 65+ • Protective factors of disability risk include higher income, and post-secondary education. About 900 youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) reside at an emergency youth shelter (EYS) in Toronto on any given night. Several EYSs offer access to healthcare based on youths' needs, including access to primary care, and mental health and addictions support. However, youth also require healthcare from the broader health system, which is often challenging to navigate and access. Currently, little is known about healthcare coordination efforts between the EYS and health systems for YEH. Using grounded theory methodology, we interviewed 24 stakeholders and concurrently analyzed and compared data to explore pathways to healthcare coordinated for youth who reside at an EYS in Toronto. We also investigated fundamental parts (i.e., norms, resources, regulations, and operations) within the EYS and health systems that influence these pathways to healthcare using thematic analysis. A significant healthcare coordination gap was found between these two systems, typically when youth experience crises, often resulting in a recurring loop of transition and discharge between EYSs and hospitals. Several parts within each system act interdependently in hindering adequate healthcare coordination between the EYS and health systems. Incorporating training for system staff on how to effectively coordinate healthcare and work with homeless populations who have complex health needs, and rethinking information-sharing policies within circles of care are examples of how system parts can be targeted to improve healthcare coordination for YEH. Establishing multidisciplinary healthcare teams specialized to serve the complex needs of YEH may also improve healthcare coordination between systems, and access and quality of healthcare for this population. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted systemic problems in Canadian long-term care (LTC). While high mortality rates in LTC received significant attention, the pandemic also took an enormous toll on mental health of LTC residents, where mental health conditions, including cognitive disorders, are already much higher than in other community settings. The pandemic resulted in a renewed interest in improving quality of care in LTC and led to the recent development of several National Standards of Canada. The newly available Standards set ambitious targets, but many of the standards are practical and essential to moving beyond a focus on safety and physical needs in LTC and towards one that supports residents as whole persons. While the standards support good mental health indirectly, there is a need to recognize mental health in these settings as a fundamental human right and essential to quality of life, and for this to be reflected in ongoing and future standards development. Ensuring existing and forthcoming National Standards are meaningfully implemented, in whole or in part, will require extensive efforts at multiple levels. The guidance provided by Canadian Standards will shape this transformative process, necessitating aligned federal and provincial investments and policies, and stakeholder engagement to bring about the envisioned high-quality care. Background: There is a need to improve mental health policy in Canada to address the growing population burden of mental illness. Understanding support for policy options is critical for advocacy efforts to improve mental health policy. Our purpose was to describe support for population-level healthy public policies to improve mental health among policy influencers and the general public in Alberta and Manitoba; and, identify associations between levels of support and sociodemographic variables and relative to the Nuffield Bioethics Intervention Ladder framework. Methods: We used data from the 2019 Chronic Disease Prevention Survey, which recruited a representative sample of the general public in Alberta (n = 1792) and Manitoba (n = 1909) and policy influencers in each province (Alberta n = 291, Manitoba n = 129). Level of support was described for 16 policy options using a Likert-style scale for mental health policy options by province, sample type, and sociodemographic variables using ordinal regression modelling. Policy options were coded using the Nuffield Council on Bioethics Intervention Ladder to classify support for policy options by level of intrusiveness. Results: Policy options were categorized as 'Provide Information' and 'Enable Choice' according to the Nuffield Intervention Ladder. There was high support for all policy options, and few differences between samples or provinces. Strong support was more common among women and among those who were more politically left (versus center). Immigrants were more likely to strongly support most of the policies. Those who were politically right leaning (versus center) were less likely to support any of the mental health policies. Mental health status, education, and Indigenous identity were also associated with support for some policy options. Conclusions: There is strong support for mental health policy in Western Canada. Results demonstrate a gap between support and implementation of mental health policy and provide evidence for advocates and policy makers looking to improve the policy landscape in Canada. Introduction: The inherent nature of work in correctional services can have negative effects on correctional worker mental health and well-being. Methods: The current study, a replication, analyzes survey data collected from provincial and territorial correctional workers staffed in six regions across Canada (n  =  192). Specifically, participants were asked at the end of an extensive mental health and well-being survey an open-ended question requesting any additional feedback or information. Results: Four predominant themes were identified in the data: (1) stigma pertaining to a need to recognize mental health concerns within correctional services; (2) the idea that correctional services wear on the mind and body; (3) a need for better relationships with and support from correctional supervisors, upper management, and ministerial leadership; and (4) suggestions to improve correctional services to help the sector realize its full potential and maximize workplace health. Discussion: We discuss the implications of these findings, with an emphasis on finding ways to promote positive organizational and cultural change in correctional services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study identified individual sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and service use patterns associated with quality of life (QoL) among 308 individuals living in permanent supportive housing (PSH) in Québec (Canada). Data were collected between 2020 and 2022, and linear multivariate analyses produced. Results demonstrated that better individual psychosocial conditions were positively associated with higher QoL. As well, living in PSH located in good neighborhoods for at least 5 years, higher self-esteem and community integration were positively associated with greater QoL. Met needs, satisfaction with housing support services, and no use of acute care were also linked with positive QoL. Comprehensive efforts to improve treatment for mental health disabilities responsive to the needs of PSH residents, and sustained long-term housing may reinforce QoL. Encouraging active participation in community-based activities, incorporating biophilic design into the neighborhoods around PSH, and promoting satisfaction with care may also enhance QoL. Background: South Asian (SA) Canadians are disproportionately affected by higher rates of mood and anxiety disorders. SA Canadians with depression report significant barriers to accessing mental health care and the highest proportion of unmet mental health needs. The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) advocates for culturally and linguistically relevant services for SA Canadians. Culturally adapted cognitive behavior therapy (CaCBT) has shown to be more effective than standard cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). Adapting CBT for the growing SA population in Canada will ensure equitable access to effective, culturally-appropriate mental health interventions. Method: The study used a qualitative design to elicit stakeholder consultation via in-depth interviews. This study is reported using the criteria included in Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Studies (COREQ). The analysis follows an ethnographic approach and was informed by the principles of emergent design. Results: Five themes were identified from the analysis, (i) Awareness and preparation: factors that impact the individual's understanding of therapy and mental illness. (ii) Access and provision: SA Canadians' perception of barriers, facilitators, and access to treatment. (iii) Assessment and engagement: experiences of receiving helpful treatment. (iv) Adjustments to therapy: modifications and suggestions to standard CBT. (v) Ideology and ambiguity: racism, immigration, discrimination, and other socio-political factors. Conclusions: Mainstream mental health services need to be culturally appropriate to better serve SA Canadians experiencing depression and anxiety. Few researchers have explored Canadian migrants' experiences of mental health and service access. We interviewed 10 migrants to Canada from a local settlement organization about mental health and services and 5 organization staff about their experiences supporting migrants' mental health and service access. Our interviews with migrants revealed cultural perceptions of mental health and unmet service needs. Our focus group with staff indicated challenges experienced by migrants and the tension between their openness with mental health difficulties and stigmatization from their cultural communities. Objective: There is little known about the role of Peer Support Workers (PSWs) in mental health programming in Western Canada. To contribute to this body of knowledge, Canadian Mental Health Association - Calgary Region (CMHA Calgary) sought to clearly define and understand how PSWs could support mental health programming in a non-clinical way. Research Design and Methods: CMHA Calgary planned to integrate PSWs into all existing mental health programs. The integration of PSWs was piloted in the organization's group counselling program to collect information and gain learnings that could be used to spread the initiative to all programs. The project team developed a developmental evaluation framework as a guide to collect feedback and understand the impact of the initiative. Qualitative data was collected from PSWs, counsellors, and program management using formal one-on-one interviews, anonymous surveys, and consensus building in group settings. This information was analyzed using a collaborative thematic analysis approach. This involved two reviewers working together to analyze and identify themes within the data. Results: This project provided CMHA Calgary with information on how to integrate PSWs into all programs. The project further allowed for the development of program materials for future application. Conclusions: The results of this project contribute to the overall knowledge of PSWs in Western Canada and can be used by other organizations looking to integrate PSWs into mental health programming. Objective: The aim of this study was to understand the experiences of pregnant people and new parents in Canadian federal prisons for women, and to better understand their ability to participate in the institutional Mother Child Program. Methods: This qualitative case study used semi-structured interviews with people who experienced federal incarceration during pregnancy or the early parenting years. Findings: Major themes in the analysis include: 1) Reasons why- and why not- to participate in the Mother Child Program; 2) Mothering from inside; 3) Health care; and 4) Strategies and survival. Key conclusions: Mothers describe multiple reasons for choosing not to participate or being ineligible for the Mother Child Program; separation as common and traumatic; health services as inadequate; and mental health concerns being met with punishment. Objective: To compare risk factors and associated mental health and academic outcomes between international and domestic students. Participants: Canadian university undergraduate students. Methods: Electronic surveys were completed at university entry and the end of first year. Surveys assessed demographics, risk factors, symptoms of mental disorders, and access to support. Academic outcomes were obtained from university databases. Results: International students had comparable or lower rates of clinically significant anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Domestic female students reported the highest screening rates for common mental disorders. However, international students were more likely to report having attempted suicide. International students felt less connected to the university community and had lower academic performance. Psychosocial risk factor profiles and proportions accessing mental health services were similar. Conclusions: The scope of mental health need appears more similar than different between international and domestic students; however, international students may benefit from targeted academic and social support initiatives. In this study, we explore family and clinician experiences with virtual care delivery of whole family assessment and therapy developed for infant and preschool‐aged children and adapted during the COVID‐19 pandemic. A clinical case study is also presented. Between September and November 2020, semi‐structured interviews were conducted with four clinicians working with families with children in the 0 to 5 population and with four caregivers with children aged 4–6 years (M = 5.3) involved in whole family assessment and intervention (i.e., Lausanne Trilogue Play [LTP]; Reflective Family Play [RFP]) at a community mental health facility. Clinicians represented various mental health disciplines. Qualitative data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis with intercoder reliability established. Analysis of interviews generated nine themes organised within two conceptual frameworks, accessibility and efficacy. Accessibility included the themes: (1) flexibility, (2) privacy, and (3) resources. Efficacy comprised: (4) effects of technology, (5) home environment, (6) feasibility of therapy tasks, (7) parent alliance, (8) clinician fatigue, and (9) overall evaluation. Home environment was further divided into three subthemes: (5.1) disruptions, (5.2) boundaries, and (5.3) naturalistic observation. While participants reported benefits and challenges uniquely related to virtual care, both caregivers and clinicians expressed overall satisfaction with virtual whole family assessment and therapy. This study provides a rich exploration of the perspectives of caregivers and clinicians engaged in virtual whole family mental health care during the COVID‐19 pandemic. With adequate technology and privacy, whole family assessment and therapy, such as the LTP and RFP, provided via video teleconferencing facilitated accessible and effective care for families of young children with moderate to severe mental health challenges. Evidence suggests in‐person and hybrid approaches to whole family assessment and therapy could be further tailored to meet the needs of families with young children and infants. The article presents a study which explored the extent of Covid-19 related disruptions in child safety interventions to protect children in newcomer families across rural and urban settings and how child safety can be improved or changed as the pandemic unfolds in Ontario. The involvement of people living with mental illness in the judicial process, whether in civil or criminal justice system, is a growing phenomenon that can be defined as judiciarization. Such over-representation of people with mental illness in the justice system is related to several issues, including stigma, experienced coercion, loss of autonomy and social isolation. To explore this understudied phenomenon in nursing research, we conducted a study to better understand how judiciarization affects people living with mental illness. The specific objectives were: 1) to understand how insertion into a judicial process affects people living with mental illness; 2) to explore the perception of these people and their lived experience within the judicial trajectory. For the methodology, grounded theory was used as a research model. The theoretical framework of the total institution, proposed by Erwin Goffman, was used conceptually. Participants were recruited from a university-affiliated hospital. Hospitalized persons who had been involved in the justice system were interviewed (n = 10). Three conceptualizing categories were identified through the analyzed data: 1) Diversity of Judicial Trajectories; 2) Involuntary Psychiatric Admission Process; 3) Judiciarization Lived as a Complex Experience. The results of this research can be used to better inform nurses, clinicians, and policy makers about the impacts of the judiciarization of mental illness, and how clinical practices can be better adapted to populations with very complex health needs. Background The Canadian Federal Public Service Workplace Mental Health Strategy (the Strategy) seeks to measure, report, and improve employee psychological health, recognizing the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace (the Standard) as a starting point. The present research introduced a new survey battery for the assessment of employee psychological health as profiles of burnout and work engagement. It also considered a wide range of predictors aligned with the Standard and several outcomes in accordance with the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) Model to support the Strategy. Data and methods A total of 4,781 Statistics Canada employees completed an Employee Wellness Survey in late 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, for a response rate of 58%. Additional sociodemographic variables were linked from human resource databases. Survey weights were applied to adjust for non-response. Results Latent profile analysis uncovered four employee psychological health profiles, ranging from employees who were thriving (15%) to those who were doing well (34%), moving along (38%), or struggling (13%). Job autonomy, role clarity, person-job fit, work-life interference, and workplace incivility--all workplace psychosocial factors aligned with the Standard--were consistently associated with profile membership, as expected, and outcome levels were systematically less favourable from the thriving profile to the struggling profile. Interpretation The results support the validity of the employee psychological health profiles and predictors of profile membership, meeting expectations based on the JD-R literature. Key predictors can serve as metrics to monitor and as targets for workplace interventions designed to improve employee psychological health in support of the Strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Canada, unmet mental health care needs remain a major issue despite mental disorders ranking as the second largest source of years lost to disability. As discussions continue on alternative models of healthcare to reduce the long waiting times for mental health treatment, leveraging the skills and resources available from physician associates/assistants (PAs) and NPs becomes imperative. Relatively few PAs in Canada work in psychiatry, despite widespread acceptance in other medical disciplines. Sustainable funding models for the training, recruitment, and retention of PAs in mental health care are vital. More research, policy development, and interprofessional collaboration can enhance the effective integration of PAs into mental health care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Significant disparities in utilization of mental health services exist among immigrant and Canadian-born populations. These gaps may be associated with a 'double stigma' – stigma related to being from a racialized background exacerbated by mental health stigma. Immigrant young adults may be particularly susceptible to this phenomenon, given developmental and social transitions from adolescence to adulthood. Aims: To investigate the joint effects of racial microaggression and mental health stigma on mental health and service use among first-generation immigrant and Canadian-born university students. Method: We conducted an online cross-sectional study among first-generation immigrant and Canadian-born university students (N = 1,280, M age = 19.10, SD = 1.50). Results: Despite no differences in anxiety or depression symptoms, first-generation (foreign-born) immigrants were less likely to have received therapy and to have taken medication for mental health issues compared to Canadian-born participants. First-generation immigrants also reported experiencing higher levels of racial microaggression and stigma toward service use. Results suggest the presence of a double stigma, mental health stigma and racial microaggression, each explained significant additional variance in symptoms of anxiety and depression and medication use. No effects of double stigma for therapy use were found – while higher mental health stigma predicted lower use of therapy, racial microaggression did not predict unique variance in therapy use. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the joint effects of racial microaggression and stigma toward mental health and service as barriers to help-seeking among immigrant young adults. Mental health intervention and outreach programmes should target overt and covert forms of racial discrimination while incorporating culturally sensitive anti-stigma approaches to help reduce disparities in mental health service use among immigrants in Canada.
