- Abstract
This is a summary of the final report of the Cardston School Division Project for Improvement in the Language Arts, a three-year project in Alberta, Canada, using Exemplary Center for Reading Instruction (ECRI) strategies and materials and having as its objectives the improvement of language arts teaching, student achievement in language arts, students' self-concepts and social relations, and the learning rates of all elementary school students in the division. The 11 sections provide information relative to the following: motivation for the project; background and description of the ECRI training program; pupil development in ability, achievement, and self-concept over the three years of the project; pupil learning rate and retention over the three years of the project; a written composition study; a handwriting study; an attendance rates study; parent and teacher reactions to the program; possible outcomes of the project other than those evaluated through formal observation and testing; and general outcomes of the project.
