1. Mourning 'The Chrysalids': Currere, Affect, and Letting Go

Abstract

This paper revisits the well-known and often-taught novel "The Chrysalids" toward a reconsideration of the novel's place within curriculum and the pedagogies it may offer. Framed as a mourning ceremony, a way of revisioning what the novel could mean in the present by saying goodbye to what it has meant in the past, the paper progresses in two major moments. The first looks at the novel in the author's lived experience and discusses personal mourning. The second engages affect theory toward a (re)reading of the material resistances and erasures within one copy of the text. The author concludes by expressing the need for a (re)visioning of what curricular fixtures such as "The Chrysalids" could mean today.

2. Critical Posthumanism, 'The Chrysalids,' and Educational Change

Abstract

This paper comprises a re-reading of the 1955 novel by John Wyndham, "The Chrysalids," in conversation with philosopher Rosi Braidotti's formation of critical posthumanism. The author argues that such re-readings of curricular fixtures within secondary English classrooms constitutes a necessary pragmatic intervention in a school system often reluctant to re-examine its canonical texts. The author highlights the way "The Chrysalids" illustrates the transition from theocracy to liberal humanism but also invites the possibility of a posthumanism through its ending. Finally, the author considers the democratic and emancipatory foundations of education and their "de facto" humanist projects in conversation with posthumanist theory. The author concludes by suggesting that changes in texts, ways of reading, and the foundations of education are urgent amid the current socio-environmental moment.

3. Place-Based Readings toward Disrupting Colonized Literacies: A Métissage

Abstract

Working from the premise that learning to live well in our places is quickly becoming a necessity of human survival, in this article we weave together divergent experiences of our shared place, the Wabanaki Confederacy or Eastern Canada, and literatures and literacies of that place. This article is methodologically framed using the concept of "métissage" as it has been taken up in Canadian curriculum studies as a form of intertextual life writing. Through our métissage, we are ultimately concerned with theorizing the idea of reading place--making sense of the ways in which settler colonialism has historically made, and continues to make, itself felt on Land. The idea of reading place, however, also demands that we actively engage in disrupting the normativity of settler colonial presence on Land--particularly as manifest through literature and literacy. Toward speaking back to the normativity of this settler colonial presence, the authors draw on divergent pedagogical and literary practices toward ensuring indigenous futurities.

4. Shifting from Stories to Live by to Stories to Leave By: Early Career Teacher Attrition

Abstract

We began this research by asking questions about the high number of teachers who leave teaching in their first five years of teaching. The literature on early career teacher attrition (Borman & Dowling, 2008; Guarino, Santibanez & Daly, 2006; Macdonald, 1999; Smith & Ingersoll, 2004) left us with wonders around the experiences of teachers who leave. The storied experiences of those who leave appear absent, for the most part, in the literature. In order to hear the stories of the experiences of early career teacher leavers we engaged in a narrative inquiry with four teachers who left teaching in their first five years. We are researchers, who are also teachers who have left classrooms. The stories of these early career leavers resonated strongly with us. As we engaged in the study, we awakened to how the early career teacher leavers' stories shifted and changed with each conversation, as the research conversations allowed them to make sense of their experiences with leaving.

5. The Relationship between National Culture and the Usability of an E-Learning System

Abstract

This study sought to measure the relationship between national culture and the usability of an e-Learning system by using Hofstede's cultural dimensions and Nielson's usability attributes. The study revealed that high uncertainty avoidance cultures found the system more frustrating to use. The study also revealed that individuals from cultures with low power distance indicators (e.g., people more accepting of uneven power distribution) rated the system's usability higher than individuals from high power distance cultures. Abstract

This research project is a study of education, out-migration of young adults, and the impact of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) on the education and economies of rural communities in Newfoundland and Labrador. A qualitative study of Newfoundland and Labrador's rural schools were conducted from January to August 2001. This report is organized into six chapters. Chapter One provides the introduction and the background of the study, including the methodology. Chapter Two examines how curriculum is organized in Newfoundland and Labrador. This background information is necessary in order to understand the discussion of specific curriculum areas in Chapters Three and Four. Chapter Three focuses specifically on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the schools, paying particular attention to its impact on small rural schools. Chapter Four explores the relationship between community economic development and the school curriculum. Chapter Five focuses on teacher training and continuing education. Chapter Six is a summary and conclusion, with lessons learned. 7. Early Career Teacher Attrition: Intentions of Teachers Beginning

Abstract

Early career teacher attrition has most often been conceptualized as either a problem associated with individual factors (e.g. burnout) or a problem associated with contextual factors (e.g. support and salary). This study considered early career teacher attrition as an identity making process that involves a complex negotiation between individual and contextual factors. Forty second- and third-year teachers in rural, urban, and suburban boards across Alberta, Canada, who taught at different grade levels, were interviewed about their experiences with attention to their future intentions. The semi-structured interviews were analyzed in two ways: simple descriptive statistics on demographic data and thematic analysis of the interviews. The seven themes, developed inductively, were: (1) support; (2) an identity thread of belonging; (3) tensions around contracts; (4) new teachers will do anything; (5) balancing composing a life: Working hours; (6) the struggle to not allow teaching to consume them; and (7) can I keep doing this? Is this teaching? The results of the study prompted questions about how beginning teachers might be sustained by considering each person's storied life, as well as about how teachers might be sustained on both their personal and professional knowledge landscapes.

8. Attending to Changing Landscapes: Shaping the Interwoven Identities of Teachers and Teacher Educators

Abstract

Teachers, in Canada and elsewhere, live and work on school landscapes being shifted by globalization, immigration, demographics, economic disparities and environmental changes. Within those landscapes teachers find themselves struggling to compose lives that allow them to live with respect and dignity in relation with children, youth and families. In places in Canada, increasing numbers of teachers are leaving after only a few years of teaching. In this paper we take up questions about the stories teachers tell of their leaving and about what we can learn about our work as teacher educators from listening to, and inquiring into, their stories. Considering the inter-relatedness of our lives as teacher educators with teachers, we also inquire into our shifting landscapes as teacher educators. We discuss possible spaces we might collaboratively shape with teachers as they, and we, attempt to sustain our stories to live by on these shifting landscapes. (Contains 2 notes.)

9. The Social Studies in Alberta--1975: A Summary of a Report of an Assessment.

Abstract

This summary report assesses the design implementation and classroom instruction of the Alberta, Canada, social studies curriculum. The purpose of the study was to present a synthesis of findings from five investigative activities undertaken by a research association in Alberta: (1) review of the background of the program, (2) critiques of the master plan, (3) questionnaire survey of teachers, students, and parents, (4) analysis of locally developed programs, and (5) series of interviews, observations, and site visits. The study is presented in four chapters. Chapter I, The Questions, asks how appropriate and effective are the original master plan, the programs which have been developed at the local level, and the typical classroom situation. Chapter II, Summary of Conclusions and Supporting Evidence, broadly generalizes conclusions for the master plan, program development, and the classroom situation. Chapter III, Summary Judgments, presents a profile of attainment of educational objectives in the three sectors of the curriculum, and Chapter IV, Recommendations, suggests nine specific steps which might improve the project. It is concluded that the social studies program is consistent with emerging objectives of education but is not being effectively implemented. (Author/DB)

10. The Social Studies in Alberta--1975: A Report of an Assessment.

Abstract

Design implementation and classroom instruction of the Alberta, Canada, social studies curriculum master plan are assessed in this report. The objective of the study was to synthesize findings of investigative activities into a set of general conclusions from which recommendations could be developed. It was concluded that internal inconsistencies of the plan plus a lack of teacher awareness of its subtle intents have rendered it less useful than it ought to be. The following reasons are given for this weak translation of the Master Plan into programs: lack of time for program development, lack of resources, insufficient consultative services, and teacher incompetence in program development. To counteract these difficulties, nine recommendations are offered, including creation of an ad hoc task force to reassess and revise the master plan, revision of the documents of the master plan by the Department of Education, and encouragement of teachers to achieve a broader social studies repertoire and a better balance of classroom activities. The final judgment was that the social studies plan is commendable and highly acceptable in its major orientations and should be continued, with certain refinements. Five appendices discuss the background of the study; critique the master plan; provide the survey of teachers, students, and parents; assess the instructional programs; and present observations of site visits. 11. The Alberta Academy for Educational Leadership. Report of an Appraisal.

Abstract

The Alberta Academy for Educational Leadership was created by a number of education-related organizations in response to provincial governmental pressure. To evaluate the program, at the end of a 3-year exploratory period, data were obtained from onsite observations, meetings with three sets of graduates, selected school staffs and colleagues, and with participant and interested observers. Additionally, questionnaires sent to 273 graduates were responded to by 195 (74 percent); and questionnaires sent to 92 superintendents were responded to by 83 (90 percent). A summary of a review and synthesis of the current literature on leadership and leadership development is presented. More than 75 percent of the responding participants indicate they have considered returning to the Academy for another program, and 95 percent would recommend the experience to a colleague. An 80 percent positive rating in terms of the applicability of knowledge acquired was given, and on a five-point scale rating, the culture of the Academy as an environment for professional growth, the mean rating was 4.7. The superintendents' views of the Academy are generally positive. Alternative futures for the Academy were explored at a meeting with the six stakeholder groups by giving them a summary of the appraisal data with an overview of seven alternative scenarios. The report concludes with a summary, speculations, and recommendations. (MLF)

12. The Small High School in Alberta. A Report of an Investigation.

Abstract

An assessment of the present status of the small high school in Alberta, Canada, a prediction of the probable future of rural high schools of various sizes, and the generation of recommendations for the improvement of the educational opportunities provided by necessarily existent small high schools were the objectives of this investigation. The organization of Alberta high schools and their programs are discussed historically. The present status of the small high school is presented which includes a discussion of the program it offers; the achievement and satisfaction of its students; the qualifications, experience and work load of its teachers; the facilities it is provided with; and the leadership and consultative services it receives. Also, the typical small high school community is described. Recommendations are presented with respect to the following: the necessity and feasibility of maintaining all presently existing small high schools; the strengthening of necessarily existent small high schools; and the implementation of proposed improvements. It is specifically recommended that multi-campus high schools be established where they are geographically feasible throughout the province, and that ways and means of capitalizing upon the strengths of smallness and overcoming the weakness of smallness be considered. Chapter 2, "The Character and Quality of Canadian Education: Some Contemporary Issues," outlines the purposes and recent trends of education; places education in political, social, and economic contexts; gives educational outcomes in terms of academics, skills and work habits, values, dropout rates, and public opinion; and defines current issues facing learning. "Designing Canada's Future: Learning for the 21st Century" is chapter 3, discussing patterns, accomplishments, and challenges of education today, responses and trends for tomorrow, and how to design an effective learning system for the 21st century. Abstract

This article reports on the acquisition of Acerra by Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ontario. Acerra executive Justin Ferrabee says the move is part of Algonquin's attempt to corner a growing space. Mergers and acquisitions are not usually part of an academic institution's mandate, but Ferrabee says Algonquin has adopted an aggressive philosophy towards becoming a market leader and Acerra will help achieve its goals. He says what made Acerra an attractive target was it is the only company in the state that offers a full range of services such as consulting, technical skills and online development. College executive John Hamilton notes that there is a lot of integration issues that go along with acquisitions. These include integration from a brand perspective, integration from a back-end office perspective and integration from a sales process. Acerra electronic-learning and consulting practice will be brought into Algonquin's Management Centre and Technology Institute. There will be some universities, some colleges and some corporate who end up leading the industry and there will be some left behind. There will be a cluster at the finish line, rather than a sector that wins over another sector.
