Population declines of Leach's Storm Petrels Hydrobates leucorhous in the western Atlantic have both led to the species' recent assessment as Threatened in Canada and contributed to a Vulnerable designation by the IUCN. Limited information suggests low adult survival rates are an important contributing factor. Off eastern Nova Scotia, Canada, Country Island is managed for avian predators and mustelids to protect nesting endangered Roseate Terns Sterna dougallii. The island also hosts a colony of Leach's Storm Petrels. In 2016, a capture-markrecapture program was initiated for storm petrels, from which we estimated apparent survival and recapture probabilities for 571 breeding birds using data collected from 2016 to 2021. Models with a time-since-marking effect were consistently ranked higher than those without; annual apparent survival estimates in the first year after capture were lower than in subsequent years, presumably due to some captured birds not returning to the study area. Apparent survival in the years subsequent to first capture was lowest in forested areas with no understorey vegetation, slightly higher in forested areas with fern understorey, and highest in open areas with dense fern cover. While the mechanism driving habitat differences in adult survival is unknown, predation pressure may be strongest in forested areas with open understorey where it is easier for predators to find burrow entrances. Although apparent adult survival rates were higher than reported previously for nearby Bon Portage Island where predation is significant, Country Island may represent a best-case scenario for Leach's Storm Petrel in Atlantic Canada, since predators are managed and adult mortality from avian predators is relatively low at this site. Even so, survival rates at Country Island are lower than those reported previously at two Pacific colonies and provide evidence that adult survival rates of Leach's Storm Petrels in eastern Canada are depressed. 1. Mark-recapture models are valuable for assessing diverse demographic and behavioural parameters, yet the precision of traditional estimates is often constrained by sparse empirical data. Bayesian inference explicitly recognizes estimation uncertainty, and hierarchical Bayes has proven particularly useful for dealing with sparseness by combining information across data sets. 2. We developed a general hierarchical Bayesian multi-state mark-recapture model, tested its performance on simulated data sets and applied it to real ecological data on stopovers by migratory birds. 3. Our hierarchical model performed well in terms of both precision and accuracy of parameters when tested with simulated data of varying quality (sample size, capture and survivorship probabilities). It also provided more precise and accurate parameter estimates than a non-hierarchical model when data were sparse. 4. A specific version of the model, designed for estimation of daily transience and departure of migratory birds at a mid-route stopover, was applied to 11 years of autumn migration data from Atlantic Canada. Hierarchical estimates of departure and transience were more precise than those derived from parallel non-hierarchical and frequentist methods, and indicated that inter-annual variability in parameters suggested by these other methods was largely due to sampling error. 5. Synthesis and applications. Estimates of demographic parameters, often derived from mark-recapture studies, provide the basis for evaluating the status of species at risk, for developing conservation and management strategies and for evaluating the results of current protocols. The hierarchical Bayesian multi-state mark-recapture model presented here permits partitioning of complex parameter variation across space or time, and the simultaneous analysis of multiple data sets results in a marked increase in the precision of estimates derived from sparse capture data. Changes in harvest rate over the past 3 decades have been shown to be closely related to population growth of greater snow geese (GSG; Chen caerulescens atlantica). We used band-recovery and harvest survey data from 1970 to 2001 to study temporal variations in geographic harvest distribution and composition of GSG in Québec, Canada and the Atlantic Flyway states (AF) in the United States. We sought to determine whether (1) geographic variation in harvest was associated with temporal trends in total harvest rates observed during this period; (2) spatiotemporal distributions of harvest varied with age and sex; and (3) harvest distribution and composition differed between the spring conservation harvest initiated in 1999 and the regular fall hunt in Québec. We detected over time a gradual spreading in the geographic distribution of the fall harvest from the upper St. Lawrence estuary toward southwestern Québec. During winter, a sudden northward shift in the distribution of the United States harvest in the mid-1980s was associated with a high concentration of geese in mid-Atlantic Flyway states (Maryland, Delaware, and NewJersey), possibly due to short-stopping during migration. We argue that this led to a reduction of hunting pressure on GSG and may have contributed to the sudden decline in harvest rate that occurred at that time and ultimately to the ensuing population increase. We observed a decreasing proportion of juveniles in the kill throughout the hunting season within fall staging grounds in Québec and between Québec and the United States. We also found a much higher proportion of adults in the spring harvest than in the fall that is consistent with the conservation goal of increasing the adult harvest. Migratory species with disjunct and localized breeding distributions, including many colonial marine birds, pose challenges for management and conservation as their dynamics are shaped by both broad oceanographic changes and specific factors affecting individual breeding colonies. We compare six colonies of the declining Leach's storm-petrel, Hydrobates leucorhous, across their core range in Atlantic Canada using standard capture-mark-recapture methods to estimate annual survival of individually marked populations of breeding adults. Over the period analysed (5-20 years per colony; 2003-2022), mean annual survival varied among colonies (0.81-0.88) and annually (process error σ ranging from 0.01 to 0.09), though annual fluctuations were not synchronous across colonies. Two colonies with limited natural predation showed higher survival, and there was a decline in survival with increasing colony-specific total mercury burden.
