This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Hope-Action Inventory (HAI) scores with a problematic substance use population (N = 783). The hierarchical seven-factor structure of the HAI fit the data well. Further, the HAI scores had satisfactory internal consistency reliability and good convergent evidence for validity.

Academic librarians have always played an important role in providing research services and research-skills development to faculty in higher education. But that role is evolving to include the academic librarian as a unique and necessary research partner, practitioner, and participant in collaborative, grant-funded research projects. This article describes how a selected sample of Canadian academic librarians became embedded in faculty research projects and describes their experiences of participating in research teams. Conducted as a series of semistructured interviews, this qualitative study illustrates the emerging opportunities and challenges of the librarian-researcher role and how it is transforming the Canadian university library.

These two studies investigated the university student clients' perspective on factors that hinder the counseling alliance. In Study 1, twelve university students identified alliance-hindering factors while watching a videotape of their third or fourth counseling session. In total, 74 factors (in the form of participant statements) were elicited and these participants returned to sort them into categories of their own choosing. The university students who participated in Study 2 sorted the same 74 factors into conceptually homogenous categories and also categorized 74 reasons how or why the factors were thought to be hindering. In both studies, multivariate concept-mapping statistical techniques were used to identify the most typical conceptual structure used by participants in understanding conceptual interrelationships amongst the factors for all three sets of sorted statements. Alliance-hindering factors were classifiable into six categories (Study 1) and four categories (Study 2) and the reasons how or why they were hindering were classifiable into four categories. The results of these studies can be used to advance models of the counseling alliance for working with university students that better take into account clients' subjective perspectives, to help mental health professionals understand factors that could be impairing their therapeutic alliances, and to better instruct trainees in university counseling centers on alliance development. This article examines the frequency with which studies on boys/men are represented in Canadian counselling scholarship, as embodied in the "Canadian Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy" (CJCP). To address this question, a quantitative content analysis was conducted of articles published in CJCP from 2000 (Volume 34, Number 1) to 2011 (Volume 45, Number 2). Results indicate that authors and researchers who publish in CJCP overwhelmingly study females rather than males, at a ratio of about 12 to 1. This raises questions regarding the absence of boys/men in Canadian counselling scholarship and provides a defensible rationale for the further study of males and counselling. (Contains 1 table.)
