The last in a series of eight reports on mental retardation in a Canadian province presented statistical data on raw scores for the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), the Vineland Social Maturity Scale (SMS), and the Draw-A-Person (DAP) test by age/sex categories as administered for the study. Isolation of subsamples of the mentally retarded as well as samples of subjects having higher psychometric, conceptual and social maturity scores was said to require identification of subjects by standard deviation ranges from means of age/sex groups for raw scores on the WISC, SMS, and DAP. Designations for units, each of which had a standard deviation range of .5, were said to be synonymous with data card punches. Statistical recording procedures used permitted coding from greater than five standard deviation to less than negative five standard deviation. The sixth in a series of eight reports on mental retardation in a Canadian province recorded in detail the research methodology used in acquisition of epidemiological data (incidence and disease control) and in depth knowledge of mental retardation as it occurred in the target population. In addition to attitudinal, demographic, and other variables, the procedure was explained to allow for raw and/or scaled scores for psychometric, and conceptual and social maturation. The project was designed to facilitate subsequent and more intensive analysis of test items and methodological variables. Eleven data cards were used, with the total number for each individual subject varying according to age and household status. Card types 01 and 02 referred to household data and card types 03 through 11 included individual subject data. Data for the 11 cards were included in the report. A glossary of terms and definitions concluded the work. Rationale for test and individual data was discussed in the other reports. The fourth of a series of reports on the study, Mental Retardation in a Canadian Province, the document covers the initial months of field data gathering in Prince Edward Island, April to September 1969. The major objectives of the study, to describe and explore the most suitable definition of retardation for a Canadian population and to report on the prevalence of mental retardation in a geographically defined population, are stated and further broken down into null hypotheses. Problems involved in selecting the sample population and data on the final sample, the battery of instruments administered, staff selection and training, the interview process, and the use of publicity to introduce and support the project are described. Professional interest in the study is mentioned with the conclusion that the study can fill an important research void. (RJ)

The fifth of a series of brief reports on the study of mental retardation in a Canadian province covers a period of approximately one year (September, 1969, through November, 1970). The period under review is primarily one of data gathering with the emphasis on the adequacy of the sampling procedure, follow up of incomplete interviews, and tapping of the sample for opinions of the mentally handicapped, as members of families and society at large. The study itself is an attempt to investigate the prevalence of mental retardation in a geographically defined Canadian population (Prince Edward Island) and to devise a criteria with maximum flexibility for use in social and health planning in the field of mental retardation. The document includes information on preparation of data, methodological issues, staff and facilities. (CD)

The second report on the Canadian Welfare Council's study of the social and psychological aspects of mental handicaps in the population of Prince Edward Island reviews the development of the project, describes its current status, and outlines plans for continuation . The purpose of the study is to define the nature and prevalence of mental handicaps and thereby obtain valuable data for more adequate social planning and treatment for the mentally handicapped. Discussed are the development of the project to May 1968, details of the May to August operations (development of methodology, pilot study, construction of interview schedule, hiring and training the interview team, field work, data analysis), the present status as of September 1, 1968, and future plans. The proposed research design, to be actualized beginning in 1969, was evolved to determine the nature and prevalence of mental retardation in Canada and to relate them to other variables. Issues raised concerning both nature and prevalence were reviewed as were surveys in seven different geographic areas. A pilot study conducted in two small villages on Prince Edward Island produced an operational index of mental retardation and a research instrument including enumeration data, measures of intellectual and social competence, case histories, observation, and personality and attitudinal variables. Sampling procedures and field work plans were set; scoring, coding, and statistical facilities and techniques were fixed. (JD)

To study the psychological and social connotations of mental retardation in Canada, to identify demographic detail, and to develop research instruments and methodology, the proposed research studied the total population (110,000 persons) of Prince Edward Island. Subjects were randomly selected from ages 10 through 64. Prevalence tables are included, but the final results of the study are not yet available. The present knowledge is reviewed, and the methods to be used in the study are described. (JM)

The seventh in a series of eight reports on mental retardation in a Canadian province provided basic psychometric, social and conceptual maturity data of the study and outlined preliminary analytical tables designed to validate research questions. The report was explained to represent a transition from theoretical discussion of mental retardation to actual isolation and study of mentally retarded persons and other persons who had significant influence on lives of the retarded. Sections one through three placed individuals by age/sex categories on a table according to test scores on the Wechsler Intelligence Test for Children, the Draw-A-Person test, and the Vineland Social Maturity Scale. The psychometric data permitted selection of persons requiring further screening for mental retardation. Section four represented identification of sub-samples and significant persons groups. Demographical and analytical analysis in sections five and six tested variables related to epidemiology (incidence and disease control) of mental retardation as established in hypotheses included in the fourth report.
