Despite the widespread use of face masks to combat COVID‐19, little is known about their immediate and delayed social consequences. To understand short‐ and long‐term effects of face masks on interpersonal perception, we measured the evaluation of faces with and without masks at four time points—June 2020, January 2021, September 2021 and June 2022—from the early months of the pandemic in North America to the more recent, and from the implementation of mask mandates to the end of these requirements. Surprisingly, we found that, in general, faces with masks were perceived as more competent, warm, trustworthy, considerate and attractive, but less dominant and anxious than faces without masks. Moreover, differences in attributions of dominance, trustworthiness and warmth between faces with and without masks increased in a linear trend from June 2020 to June 2022. Notably, the impact of masks on perceptions of competence, considerateness, attractiveness and anxiousness did not change over time. We discuss how mask mandates can alter people's social perceptions of others who wear masks compared to those who do not wear masks and how these mandates may influence attributions of some traits more than others through mere exposure and/or social norms. Background The present study aimed to explore a longitudinal relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption in adolescence and two health-related outcomes (i.e., self-rated health and mental health) in early adulthood in the community. Methods Data from a longitudinal cohort of the Canadian National Population Health Survey (NPHS) were used. Participants of the 2002/03 survey aged 15-17 years old were followed and surveyed in 2008/09. The number of the sample used in the statistical analyses was 250 (n = 250). Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to assess the associations of fruit and vegetable consumption in the adolescence (classified into tertiles) with non-excellent (or poor) self-rated health and poor mental health (defined as having a K6 score of 5+) at followup. Results After adjusting for sex, age, the highest level of education in household, and the other covariates, participants who consumed fruits and vegetables most frequently at baseline had a significantly smaller odds ratio for being non-excellent self-rated health (OR 0.30, 95% CI 0.11, 0.83). No significant associations were found between fruit and vegetable consumption at baseline and poor mental health at follow-up in any model (p > 0.05). Conclusions The results of this longitudinal study suggest that high fruit and vegetable consumption in adolescence has a beneficial influence on self-rated health in the early adulthood. The Archean (2.8 Ga) Banded Iron Formation (BIF) of the Bell Lake region of Yellowknife greenstone belt, Canada is recrystallized to metamorphic assemblages of the amphibolite facies. This BIF is characterized by centimetre-scale Fe-rich and Si-rich mesobands. In the Si-rich mesobands, thin layers of magnetite microbands are developed in a quartz matrix. The Fe-rich mesobands are composed mainly of Ca-amphibole (hornblende), Fe-Mg amphibole (grunerite), and magnetite. The metamorphic foliation locally cuts across the mesoband boundaries, indicating the mesobanding was formed prior to peak metamorphism. Variations in mineral modal proportions between Fe-rich mesobands and microbands are diagnostic of depositional compositional differences between beds. Micro-X-ray fluorescence imaging reveals metamorphic differentiation within Fe-rich mesobands, with segregation of Fe-Mg amphibole, and the incompatible element Mn is concentrated at the margins of the Fe-rich mesobands during the amphibole-forming reactions. Ti was relatively immobile during metamorphic segregation and its distribution provides a record of the original structures in the Fe-rich mesobands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to identify and compare the attitudes of dental students toward their career choice and dental education in three different countries. Three hundred thirty-six dental students from the University of British Columbia, Canada; Mahidol University and Chiang Mai University, Thailand; and Nippon Dental University, Japan, participated in this study. Information was derived from a questionnaire consisting of career choice items and dental education items. Significant differences in the responses of the participants from each of the three countries were detected for each of the questionnaire items (P<0.001). Regarding factors that may have served as motivations for career choice, the majority of dental students from each country indicated positive reasons such as interpersonal motives, caring for other people, and academic interest. For future career options, the majority of Japanese and Canadian students planned to work as general dentists. Thai students were more likely than Japanese or Canadian to prefer specialization than practicing general dentistry. Nearly three-quarters of the Canadian and Thai students were satisfied with the teaching faculty of their schools, while only a quarter of the Japanese students indicated satisfaction. The findings from this study enhance our understanding of differences and/or similarities among dental students in three nations; this information may help to define strategies to improve the quality of international student exchange programs. Objectives: Wait times in Canada are increasingly being monitored as an indicator of quality health care delivery. We created a higher resolution picture of the wait experienced by urological surgery patients beginning with the initial referral. In doing so, we hoped to (a) identify potential bottlenecks and common delays at our centre, and (b) identify predictors of wait time. Methods: The charts of 322 patients undergoing surgery from November 2007 to March 2008 were reviewed and specific dates, patient factors and delays were recorded. The data were used to detail the patient's wait and to determine the patient factors which were predictive of wait time. Results: The mean time from decision to operate to the day of operation was 75.87 days for all patients. This number accounts for 53% of the wait time, while the time from referral to decision to operate is 47%. Predictors of a decreased wait time include cancer cases, younger age, urgency score, repeat patients and female gender in multivariate analysis. Delays were experienced by 16.8% of patients; most common delays were operating room cancellations/time constraints, patients requiring further optimization and delays in referral (4.7%, 3.4% and 3.1%, respectively). Conclusions: The waiting process is complex; the actual waiting time that a patient must endure is much longer than the wait times traditionally recorded and reported by hospitals. As strategies are implemented to decrease wait times, it will become increasingly important to monitor the entire wait time from referral to operation and to ensure that changes are being made that truly decrease wait times and not simply shift where and when the patient waits. Introduction: We sought to determine the incidence, risk factors, and prognosis for patients with positive surgical margin (PSM) during partial nephrectomy (PN) for renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Methods: From the Canadian Kidney Cancer information system (CKCis) database, a historical cohort of PN patients with PSM were identified and compared to negative surgical margin (NSM). Risk factors for PSM were examined through multivariable logistic regression. Kaplan-Meier curves were used to compare progression-free survival. Results: Of 1103 patients, 972 (88.1%), 71 (6.4%), and 60 (5.4%) had NSM, PSM, and unknown status, respectively. Median patient age and tumour size were 61 years and 3.0 cm for both groups. From multivariable analysis, pathological stage =T3 (odds ratio [OR] 2.51; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.13-5.60) and Fuhrman grade 4 (OR 5.35; 95% CI 1.11-25.72) were associated with PSM, whereas age, operative technique, and tumour size were not. Forty-nine (5.0%) patients from the NSM cohort and seven (9.9%) from the PSM cohort had a local/systemic progression of disease (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 1.4; 95% CI 0.6-3.6). There were three (0.3%) cancer-related deaths in the NSM group and none in the PSM group. After median followup of 19 (interquartile range [IQR] 5-42) and 15 (IQR 7-30) months, 855 (91.4%) and 61 (89.7%) patients were alive in the NSM and PSM groups, respectively. Conclusions: PSM occurred in 6.4% of PNs performed for RCC in this pan-Canadian cohort. Higher stage and grade are associated with a higher risk of positive margin. The small association between a PSM and progression suggests that complete nephrectomy is not necessary in patients with a PSM. Purpose: The prognostic significance of level of venous tumor thrombus (VTT) extension in patients with non-metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has been controversial. The aim of this study was to examine the prognostic significance of VTT extent in patients who underwent surgery for non-metastatic RCC.Materials and Methods: The Canadian Kidney Cancer information system database was used to identify patients who underwent surgery for non-metastatic RCC and VTT from January 2011 to December 2019. Association between VTT level and recurrence-free survival (RFS), cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS) was examined. Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed to estimate predictors of survival.Results: Out of 6,340 patients during the study period, 228 patients (3.6%) had VTT. VTT was level 0 in 84 (37%), level I to II in 112 (49%), and level III to IV in 33 (14%) patients as per the Mayo Clinic classification. Median age was 65.4 years (interquartile range [IQR] 57.6-72.2) and 169 (74.1%) were male. After a median follow-up of 21.2 months, VTT level did not significantly impact the RFS, CSS, or OS. For VTT level 0, I to II, and III to IV, there was no significant difference in estimated 5-year RFS (31%, 23%, and 30.5%; P > 0.05), CSS (70%, 69%, and 55%; P > 0.05) and OS (64%, 66%, and 50%; P > 0.05). Adjusting for known prognostic factors, thrombus level was not associated with risk of recurrence or death.Conclusion: In a large, multi-institutional cohort of patients undergoing surgery for non-metastatic RCC with tumor thrombus, thrombus extent was not independently associated with recurrence or death. Objectives: To determine the association between lymph node dissection (LND) at the time of radical nephrectomy and survival in a large, multi-institutional cohort using a propensity score matching design.Subjects and Methods: The Canadian Kidney Cancer information system was used to identify patients undergoing radical nephrectomy for nonmetastatic renal cell carcinoma. Associations between LND with overall survival , recurrence free survival and cancer specific survival were determined using various propensity score techniques in the overall cohort and in patients with varying probabilities of pN1. Cox models were used to determine association of lymph node removed with outcomes.Results: Of the 2,699 eligible patients, 812 (30%) underwent LND. Of the LND patients, 88 (10.8%) had nodal metastases. There was no association between LND and improved overall survival, recurrence free survival or cancer specific survival using various propensity score techniques (stratification by propensity score quintile, matched pairs, inverse treatment probability weighting and adjusted for propensity score quintile). There was no association between LND and a therapeutic benefit in patients with increased threshold probabilities of nodal metastases. Increased number of lymph nodes removed was not associated with improved survival outcomes.Conclusions: LND at the time of radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma is not associated with improved outcomes. There was no benefit in patients at high risk for nodal metastases, and the number of nodes removed did not correlate with survival. Introduction: Diabetes has been associated with worse survival outcomes in various malignancies; however, there are conflicting data in kidney cancer. Determining whether diabetes is associated with survival in kidney cancer may help guide treatment in a comorbid patient population.Methods: We used the Canadian Kidney Cancer information system database to identify patients undergoing partial or radical nephrectomy between 1989 and 2017 for localized renal cell carcinoma at 16 institutions across Canada. We derived inverse probability of treatment weights (IPTW) from a propensity score model based on various clinical, surgical, and pathological characteristics. We used Cox proportional hazard models to evaluate the association between diabetes and cancer-specific and overall survival, in the sample weighted by the IPTW.Results: 4828 patients met inclusion criteria, of whom 948 (19.6%) were diabetic. Median follow-up in those without death was 26.6 months (interquartile range 9.7-53.8). Among the entire cohort, 901 deaths were from any cause, and 299 deaths from kidney cancer. Before propensity score methods, diabetics were older, more likely to have comorbidities and clear cell histopathology. After propensity score adjustment, all characteristics were balanced between groups (standardized difference <0.10). IPTW-adjusted Cox proportional hazard models demonstrated no significant association between diabetes and cancer-specific (hazard ratio 1.13, 95% confidence interval 0.78-1.62), or overall survival (hazard ratio 1.14, 95% confidence interval 0.94-1.38).Conclusions: Our multi-centre study found that diabetes and nondiabetics have similar survival following nephrectomy for kidney cancer. Introduction and Objective: Patients who undergo surgical management of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) are at risk for chronic kidney disease and its sequelae. This study describes the natural history of renal function after radical and partial nephrectomy and explores factors associated with postoperative decline in renal function.Methods: This is a multi-institutional cohort study of patients in the Canadian Kidney Cancer Information System who underwent partial or radical nephrectomy for RCC. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and stage of chronic kidney disease were determined preoperatively and at 3, 12, and 24 months postoperatively. Linear regression was used to determine the association between postoperative eGFR and type of surgery (radical vs. partial), duration of ischemia, ischemia type (warm vs. cold), and tumor size.Results and Limitations: With a median follow-up of 26 months, 1,379 patients were identified from the Canadian Kidney Cancer Information System database including 665 and 714 who underwent partial and radical nephrectomy, respectively. Patients undergoing radical nephrectomy had a lower eGFR (mean = 19ml/min/1.73m2 lower) at 3, 12, and 24 months postoperatively (P<0.001). Decline in renal function occurred early and remained stable throughout follow-up. A lower preoperative eGFR and increasing age were also associated with a lower postoperative eGFR (P<0.01). Ischemia type and duration were not predictive of postoperative decline in eGFR (P>0.05). Severe renal failure (eGFR<30ml/min/1.73m2) developed postoperatively in 12.5% and 4.1% of radical and partial nephrectomy patients, respectively (P<0.001).Conclusions: After the initial postoperative decline, renal function remains stable in patients undergoing surgery for RCC. Patients undergoing radical nephrectomy have a greater long-term reduction in renal function compared with those undergoing partial nephrectomy. Purpose: Partial nephrectomy (PN) for early stage renal cancer preserves renal function better than radical nephrectomy (RN) and is generally considered oncologically similar. The Intergroup European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer trial comparing outcomes after PN vs. RN, however, showed reduced overall survival in the PN group. Our aim was to evaluate recurrence, death, and renal function after PN vs. RN for T1 tumors in a Canadian population.Materials and Methods: From 2000 to 2015, 2,358 patients with a first occurrence of a clinical T1 renal cancer who underwent PN or RN were identified from the Canadian Kidney Cancer Information System. Clinical, surgical, and pathologic parameters were analyzed. Time to progression was compared after PN vs. RN using a Cox proportional hazards model, adjusted for pertinent variables.Results: Inclusion criteria were met in 1,615 PN and 743 RN. Preoperative characteristics appeared similar in both groups. Time to progression was not different after PN vs. RN, adjusted for potential confounders (hazard ratio = 1.17 [95% CI: 0.8-1.72, P = 0.42]). Postoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate at 1 and 3 years was significantly greater for PN vs. RN in a linear regression model, accounting for preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate.Conclusions: These results suggest that progression-free survival after PN and RN in patients with T1 renal cancer was similar, but that there was better preservation of renal function after PN. This suggests that both PN and RN have similar oncological efficiency, and that selection of surgical approach should be based on other factors such as technical feasibility, potential complications, and preservation of renal function.
