Abstract

The article discusses the impending paper shortage in 1944. While the combined requirements of the U.S., Canada and England are expected to exceed by seven percent the 1943 figures, a shortage in production by 27 percent, is anticipated. A Combined Pulp & Paper Committee of the three countries was formed to investigate and report on paper. The paper crisis is attributed to the shortage of woods labor for felling trees, cutting to length, stacking of corkwood, and hauling to market.

Abstract

The article reports on the plan of Sonoco Products Co. to increase its prices for paper-based engineered carriers and related specialty products by six percent in the United States and Canada, effective with shipments on or after February 20, 2006. According to John Colyer, division vice president and general manager of Industrial Products-North America, converting operations have been forced to absorb widespread inflation in all production cost components, including adhesives, packaging, production supply items, utilities and employee-related costs.

Abstract

Background: Deaths from inherited metabolic disorders may remain undiagnosed after postmortem examination and may be classified as sudden infant death syndrome. Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) may reveal disorders of fatty acid oxidation in deaths of previously unknown cause., Methods: We obtained filter-paper blood from 7058 infants from United States and Canadian Medical Examiners. Acylcarnitine and amino acid profiles were obtained by MS/MS. Specialized interpretation was used to evaluate profiles for disorders of fatty acid, organic acid, and amino acid metabolism. The analyses of postmortem blood specimens were compared with the analyses of bile specimens, newborn blood specimens, and specimens obtained from older infants at risk for metabolic disorders., Results: Results on 66 specimens suggested diagnoses of metabolic disorders. The most frequently detected disorders were medium-chain and very-long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiencies (23 and 9 cases, respectively), glutaric acidemia type I and II deficiencies (3 and 8 cases, respectively), carnitine palmitoyl transferase type II/translocase deficiencies (6 cases), severe carnitine deficiency (4 cases), isovaleric acidemia/2-methylbutyryl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiencies (4 cases), and long-chain hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase/trifunctional protein deficiencies (4 cases)., Conclusions: Postmortem metabolic screening can explain deaths in infants and children and provide estimates of the number of infant deaths attributable to inborn errors of metabolism. MS/MS is cost-effective for analysis of postmortem specimens and should be considered for routine use by Medical Examiners and pathologists in unexpected/unknown infant and child death.

Abstract

The article reports that the recovered paper markets declined substantially in the second half of 2005 and the start of 2006. Despite that the old corrugated cardboad (OCC) prices have weakened the most in the last six months, the downward trend for OCC appears to be near its end. For the last five years mixed paper has sold for more than 50 percent of the price of OCC. With its average price above that of OCC, old newspaper has shown phenomenal market strength for more than three years. Also, with mill shutdowns and curtailments becoming the norm, the U.S. and Canadian newsprint market is very weak. Moreover, sorted office papers have decline in price for almost two years.

Abstract

Mortality among 2,113 U.S. and Canadian members of the Pulp, Sulfite, and Paper Workers' Union, 1935 through 1964, was studied using a proportionate mortality analysis. Mortality due to gastric cancer was found to be elevated in all jurisdictions, but only in mills using sulfate or sulfite pulping. An excess of mortality due to kidney cancer was limited to mills in Oregon and Washington. Excesses of deaths due to leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, and lymphosarcoma were observed only in mills in Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin and the province of Quebec. Based on small numbers, excesses of deaths due to cancers of rectum, pancreas, kidney, and lymphosarcoma were seen primarily among sulfite process workers, while Hodgkin's disease deaths occurred primarily in sulfate (kraft) process workers. These findings suggest that cancer mortality in pulp and paper workers may be related both to pulping process and to tree species processed.
