In 2003, a magma intrusion event occurred at 25-30 km in the lower crust under the northwestern corner of Lake Tahoe, as evidenced by both an earthquake swarm and a geodetic displacement. This study examines the seismicity associated with that event and subsequent seismicity in the upper crust. HYPODD relocations showed that the deep swarm of approximately 1600 microearthquakes at the intrusion site was concentrated on a planar area with a strike of N42°W, dipping at 39° to the northeast. The largest microearthquake in this swarm was M 2.2, and an anomalously high b-value of 2.0 is seen in the recurrence-versus-magnitude plot. The swarm progressed over this plane in a somewhat irregular pattern for a period of roughly 5 months. Focal mechanisms of the deep-swarm events are highly variable and do not reflect the known regional stress field. Two months after the deep-swarm activity started, a shallow swarm of approximately 1100 microearthquakes began at 10-12-km depths in the shallow crust almost immediately above the deep swarm and continued through 2005. This swarm had a maximum M of 2.4 and a relatively high b-value of 1.5. Based on HYPODD relocations, hypocenters in this swarm are concentrated in a narrow pipelike volume, and event depths progressed steadily upward over the more than 2 yr of observation. Focal mechanisms in this shallow swarm are more consistent with the regional stress field than those of the deep swarm.Within one focal depth horizontally of the deep swarm, postintrusion seismic activity increased significantly compared to prior years. Stress triggering from the deep magma intrusion, although based on sub-bar stress changes in the shallow crust, is a feasible explanation of the observed increase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Megafaunal seafloor assemblages on the Monterey Fan in the NE Pacific (Station M, 4000 m depth) were studied between 2006–2018 using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) as part of a continuing time-series study that began in 1989. Since 2006 we identified nearly 120,000 individual animals representing over 142 morphospecies, and observed continuous changes in the megafaunal assemblage. This study, which tracked variation in observed morphospecies over a 13-year period, is one of the most detailed long-term records of megafaunal change for abyssal depths. Our investigation shows that new variations continued to emerge, reinforcing the concept that the deep-sea is dynamic over short time scales, rather than static over long periods. Some species were uncommon, but later observed in high numbers, then decreased to very low or undetectable levels (e.g. Elpidia sp. A), while others (e.g. Psychropotes longicauda) exhibited a relatively persistent presence with less fluctuation in abundance. Decreasing total echinoderm density from 2013–2018 did not correspond with the continued occurrence of large episodic POC flux events between 2016–2018. This may be attributed to the quality of food supply arriving at the seafloor and the varied ability of organisms to utilize it. Long-term tracking (30 years) of 10 specific epibenthic echinoderm species originally quantified from camera-sled images shows a pattern of assemblage structure, perhaps returning toward the composition observed in the 1990s and early 2000s. Many questions remain as to how this abyssal site and others will change with continued, and potentially increasing, anthropogenic change in the upper ocean. For example, the marine heat anomaly known as the 'Warm Blob' may have influenced major ecological processes at the abyssal seafloor in terms of morphospecies and functional group composition due to changes in POC flux. The degree of dynamism continues to indicate that ad hoc or short-term investigations provide a limited perspective for assessing community structure in conservation or resource exploitation impact assessment studies in the deep sea. A time series study from 1989 to 2017 indicates that, increasingly, carbon export to abyssal sediments in the California Current Ecosystem (CCE), 220 km west of the central California coast (Sta. M), occurs as rapidly sinking pulses of particulate organic carbon (POC). Nearly continuous sediment trap collections confirm that POC export to 3400 m increased significantly after 2011 with carbon attenuation (as fraction of POC remineralized) ranging from a low of 57% to a high of 77% during periods of pulsed flux. All of the major pulse events for the period resulted in the delivery of detrital aggregates that covered part or all of the sediment surface as an organic carbon rich layer at ~4000 m depth. However, the magnitude of the measured Sediment Community Oxygen Consumption (SCOC) did not increase proportionally to the organic carbon inventory change. Here, a model of oxygen consumption, informed by the time series data at Sta. M in the CCE, suggests that aggregate flocs constitute a major source for benthic carbon and a barrier to mass transport of oxygen, leading to reduced carbon attenuation in surface sediments. The correlation of POC delivery with aggregate coverage shows that the majority of POC delivery during pulse events is likely to consume all of the oxygen within the aggregates. Results indicate that an increasing fraction of POC reaches the abyssal sediments at Sta. M under conditions that support increased net burial of carbon. This finding is significant in the context of the fraction of the total POC flux that occurs as pulse events in this important upwelling region. During the period from 2011 to 2017, a third of the total POC flux resulted in aggregate flocs that covered a significant portion of the sediment surface (>47%). Following the 2015–2016 El Nino period the flocs became a dominant feature of the sediment surface. More than 80% of the POC flux to near bottom sediment traps in 2017 occurred coincident with aggregate floc cover of more than 90% of the sediments. The resultant physical barrier to oxygen transport and relatively low consumption of newly delivered carbon indicate conditions that are more typical of environments having low oxygen bottom waters. Two new species of glass sponge were discovered from the abyssal plain 200 km west of the coast of California (Station M). The sponges have similar gross morphology--an unusual plate-like form with basalia stilling the body above soft abyssal sediments. Bathydorus laniger sp. n. differs from its congeners by the presence of dermal and atrial stauractins; it is also supported by smooth hypodermal pentactins and hypoatrial hexactins. Microscleres include oxyhexasters and oxyhemihexasters. Docosaccus maculatus sp. n. contains large hexactins (>1 cm), characteristic of the genus. Megascleres include dermal hexactins, atrial pentactins, and choanosomal hexactins and diactins. Microscleres include oxytipped hemihexasters and floricomes. Several features serve to differentiate this species from its only known congener.

Few time series of deep-sea systems exist from which the factors affecting abyssal fish populations can be evaluated. Previous analysis showed an increase in grenadier abundance, in the eastern North Pacific, which lagged epibenthic megafaunal abundance, mostly echinoderms, by 9-20 months. Subsequent diet studies suggested that carrion is the grenadier's most important food. Our goal was to evaluate if changes in carrion supply might drive the temporal changes in grenadier abundance. We analyzed a unique 17 year time series of abyssal grenadier abundance and size, collected at Station M (4100 m, 220 km offshore of Pt. Conception, California), and reaffirmed the increase in abundance and also showed an increase in mean size resulting in a ∼6 fold change in grenadier biomass. We compared this data with abundance estimates for surface living nekton (pacific hake and jack mackerel) eaten by the grenadiers as carrion. A significant positive correlation between Pacific hake (but not jack mackerel) and grenadiers was found. Hake seasonally migrate to the waters offshore of California to spawn. They are the most abundant nekton species in the region and the target of the largest commercial fishery off the west coast. The correlation to grenadier abundance was strongest when using hake abundance metrics from the area within 100 nmi of Station M. No significant correlation between grenadier abundance and hake biomass for the entire California current region was found. Given the results and grenadier longevity, migration is likely responsible for the results and the location of hake spawning probably is more important than the size of the spawning stock in understanding the dynamics of abyssal grenadier populations. Our results suggest that some abyssal fishes' population dynamics are controlled by the flux of large particles of carrion. Climate and fishing pressures affecting epipelagic fish stocks could readily modulate deep-sea fish dynamics.

Conley and You assessed the plausibility of three alternative model specifications of the relations between role stressors (i.e., role conflict, role ambiguity, and role overload) and organizational commitment, satisfaction, and turnover intentions among a sample of 178 teachers employed in four Southern California high schools. Using structural equations modeling procedures to evaluate their data, the authors reported the best fit for their "fully mediated effects" model wherein there was a "strong causal path from role ambiguity and role conflict --> satisfaction --> commitment --> intentions to leave" (p. 781). This note addresses methodological issues with the present study and provides suggestions for follow-up efforts designed to replicate and/or extend this line of research.
