Interpretation of magnetic and new gravity data provides constraints on the geometry of the Hat Creek fault, the amount of right-lateral offset in the area between Mount Shasta and Lassen Peak (northern California, USA), and confirmation of the influence of preexisting structure on Quaternary faulting. Neogene volcanic rocks coincide with short-wavelength magnetic anomalies of both normal and reversed polarity, whereas a markedly smoother magnetic field occurs over the Klamath Mountains and Paleogene cover there. Although the magnetic field over the Neogene volcanic rocks is complex, the Hat Creek fault, which is one of the most prominent normal faults in the region and forms the eastern margin of the Hat Creek Valley, is marked by the eastern edge of a north-trending magnetic and gravity high 20-30 km long. Modeling of these anomalies indicates that the fault is a steeply dipping (~75°-85°) structure. The spatial relationship of the fault as modeled by the potential-field data, the youngest strand of the fault, and relocated seismicity suggest that deformation continues to step westward across the valley, consistent with a component of right-lateral slip in an extensional environment. Filtered aeromagnetic data highlight a concealed magnetic body of Mesozoic or older age north of Hat Creek Valley. The body's northwest margin strikes northeast and is linear over a distance of ~40 km. Within the resolution of the aeromagnetic data (1-2 km), we discern no right-lateral offset of this body. Furthermore, Quaternary faults change strike or appear to end, as if to avoid this concealed magnetic body and to pass along its southeast edge, suggesting that preexisting crustal structure influenced younger faulting, as previously proposed based on gravity data. Existing models for large-magnitude, right-lateral slip on the San Gregorio-Hosgri fault system imply much more deformation of the onshore block in the Santa Maria basin than is supported by geologic data. This problem is resolved by a model in which dextral slip on this fault system increases gradually from 0-10 km near Point Arguello to ~150 km at Cape San Martin, but such a model requires abandoning the cross-fault tie between Point Sal and Point Piedras Blancas, which requires 90-100 km of right-lateral slip on the southern Hosgri fault. We collected stratigraphic and detrital zircon data from Miocene clastic rocks overlying Jurassic basement at both localities to determine if either section contained unique characteristics that could establish how far apart they were in the early Miocene. Our data indicate that these basins formed in the early Miocene during a period of widespread transtensional basin formation in the central Coast Ranges, and they filled with sediment derived from nearby pre-Cenozoic basement rocks. Although detrital zircon data do not indicate a unique source component in either section, they establish the maximum depositional age of the previously undated Point Piedras Blancas section to be 18 Ma. We also show that detrital zircon trace-element data can be used to discriminate between zircons of oceanic crust and arc affinity of the same age, a potentially useful tool in future studies of the California Coast Ranges. Overall, we find no characteristics in the stratigraphy and provenance of the Point Sal and Point Piedras Blancas sections that are sufficiently unique to prove whether they were far apart or close together in the early Miocene, making them of questionable utility as piercing points. Understanding details of accretionary complex architecture is essential to understanding construction of oceanic "outer" sides of orogens. The architecture of the Franciscan Complex (California), considered by many to be the "type" accretionary complex, is widely viewed in the context of terranes or belts delimited by reconnaissance mapping that reveals neither regional variations within terranes nor critical details of stratigraphy and structure. The architectural importance of Franciscan mélanges is recognized, but the importance of sandstone-matrix mélanges and olistostromal sandstones is not. Large-scale mapping in Sonoma and Marin counties, California, shows that Franciscan rocks are deformed, submarine-fan units of Facies A-E, plus Facies F olistolith-bearing submarine channel sandstones and olistostromal sandstone- and shale-matrix mélanges. Some mélanges are polygenetic with a sedimentary origin and a tectonic overprint. Glaucophane schists were recycled into conglomerates and olistostromes. Mappable units constitute members, broken and dismembered formations, and mélanges. Considering the stratigraphy and structure evident at the 1:24,000 scale, accretion via a subduction channel mechanism is impossible. The Sonoma-Marin Central belt or Central terrane (mélange) is not a monolithic shale-matrix mélange and lacks this characteristic of rocks assigned the same name to the north. Franciscan rocks here structurally underlie thrust-faulted fragments of a regional ultramafic sheet and, locally, an underlying exotic block-bearing serpentinite-matrix mélange. The detailed mapping shows that regional relations among and within Franciscan terranes and belts are poorly understood and suggests that such mapping is needed to clarify accretionary complex architecture and history. The implication for accretionary complex studies, in general, is that, while terrane or belt designations provide a general picture of the collage nature of accretionary complexes and clarification of regional relationships, only large-scale structural and stratigraphic studies can elucidate the architectural details of these orogenic complexes. A variety of mélanges exist within the Franciscan Complex of the northernmost California Coast Ranges. The Cowan mélange classification is employed in their description. Classic turbidite broken formation isType I mélangethat has suffered coaxial layer-parallel extension prior to folding.Type II mélange(stratally disrupted interbedded sequences of radiolarian chert, black argillite, hyaloclastite, and pillow basalt) exists as mélange blocks and/or thrust fault-bounded slabs.Type III mélange(block-in-matrix mixes of greenstone, chert, limestone, keratophyre, tonalite, turbidites, and blueschist) may have emplaced diapirically and/or by sediment gravity-flow. Type IV mélange(block-in-matrix mixes developed along shear zones) with blocks of chert, greenstone, gabbro, sandstone, and conglomerate in metapelitic or serpentinite gouge is associated with major faults. An example of the latter consists of omphacite-bearing tectonic blocks in serpentinite in an area of imbricate thrust faulting of South Fork Mountain Schist over unfoliated turbidites adjacent to the South Fork fault, which separates the Coast Ranges and Klamath Mountains provinces. This serpentinite-schist Type IV mélange has an affinity to the Coast Range ophiolite, which crops out to the south opposite the Great Valley, and perhaps formed during western translation of the Klamath Mountains. Quaternary faulting and background seismicity in the southern Sierra Nevada microplate are concentrated east and south of the Isabella anomaly, a high-velocity body in the upper mantle interpreted to be lower Sierra lithosphere that is foundering into the astheno sphere. We analyzed seismicity in this region to evaluate patterns of upper crustal deformation above and adjacent to the Isabella anomaly. Earthquakes in the southern Sierra and San Joaquin Valley were relocated using joint hypocentral inversion and doubledifference techniques, and groups of focal mechanisms were inverted for the components of a reduced deformation rate tensor. The deformation fi eld derived from this analy sis reveals two distinct departures from horizontal plane strain associated with distributed northwest-directed dextral shear east of the Pacifi c plate: (1) heterogeneous extension and crustal thinning in the high Sierra and western foothills east of the Isabella anomaly; and (2) pronounced counterclockwise rotation of the principal strains from regional trends in the southwestern Sierra Nevada and across the Kern Arch. Based on comparison with a three-dimensional tomographic model, the extension in the southern Sierra is spatially associated with relatively thinner crust and anomalous low P-wave speeds in the upper mantle (40-90 km depth range) directly east of the Isabella anomaly. These relations suggest that seismogenic crustal thinning is localized above upwelling asthenosphere that is replacing foundering lithosphere. Counterclockwise rotation of strain trajectories in the southwest Sierra occurs southeast of the Isabella anomaly, and is associated with seismogenic west-northwest-striking dextral faults. We suggest that the deformation here represents westward encroachment of dextral shear into the microplate from the eastern California shear zone and southern Walker Lane belt. The strain rotation may refl ect the presence of local stresses associated with relaxation of subsidence in the vicinity of the Isabella anomaly. Westward propagation of foundering lithosphere, with spatially associated patterns of upper crustal deformation similar to those documented herein, can account for observed late Cenozoic time- and space-transgressive deformation in the southern Walker Lane belt east of the Isabella anomaly, and is a potentially observable consequence of the foundering process in other orogens. Ongoing arc magmatism along western North America was preceded by ancestral arc magmatism that began ca. 45 Ma and evolved into modern arc volcanism. The southern ancestral arc segment, active from ca. 30 to 3 Ma, adjoins the northern segment in northern California across a proposed subducted slab tear. The east edge of the Walker Lane approximates the east edge of the southern arc whose products, mostly erupted from stratovolcanoes and lava dome complexes arrayed along the crest of the ancestral arc, extend down the west flank of the Sierra Nevada. Southern arc segment rocks include potassic, calc-alkaline intermediate- to siliciccomposition lava flows, lava dome complexes, and associated volcaniclastic deposits. Northern and southern segment rocks are similar to other convergent-margin magmatic arc rocks but are compositionally distinct from each other. Southern segment rocks have lower TiO2, FeO*, CaO, and Na2O contents and higher K2O contents, and exhibit less compositional-temporal variation. Compositional distinctions between the northern and southern segment rocks reflect the composition and thickness of the crust beneath which the associated magma systems were sourced. Northern segment rock compositions are consistent with generation beneath thin, primitive crust, whereas southern segment rocks represent magmas generated and fractionated beneath thicker, more evolved crust. Although rocks in the two arc segments have similar metal abundances, they are metallogenically distinct. Small porphyry copper deposits are characteristic of the northern segment whereas significant epithermal precious metal deposits are most commonly associated with the southern segment. The Mineral King pendant in the Sierra Nevada batholith (California, USA) contains at least four rhyolite units that record highsilica volcanism during magmatic lulls in the Sierran magmatic arc. U-Th-Pb, trace element (single crystal spot analyses via sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe-reverse geometry, SHRIMP-RG), and bulk oxygen isotope analyses of zircon from these units provide a record of the age and compositional properties of the magmas that is not available from whole-rock analysis because of intense hydrothermal alteration of the pendant. U-Pb spot ages reveal that the Mineral King rhyolites are from two periods, the Early Jurassic (197 Ma) and the Early Cretaceous (134-136 Ma). These two rhyolite packages have zircons with distinct compositional trends for trace elements and δ18O; the Early Jurassic rhyolite shows less evidence of crustal influences on the rhyolites and the Early Cretaceous rhyolite shows evidence of increasing crustal influences and crystal recycling. These rhyolites capture evidence of magmatism during two periods of low magmatic flux in the Sierran Arc; however, they still show that magmas were derived from interactions of maturing continental crust, increasing from the Early to Late Jurassic. This finding likely reflects the transition of the North America margin from one of docking island arcs in the Early Jurassic to one of a more mature continental arc in the Early Cretaceous. This also shows the utility in examining zircon spot ages combined with trace element and bulk isotopic composition to unlock the petrogenetic history of altered volcanic rocks. Kinematic assumptions of geodetic inversions for fault slip require that the slip sums to the (plate) boundary velocity. This assumption neglects permanent off-fault deformation, which could account for discrepancies between geologic and geodetic estimates. We use three-dimensional mechanical models to assess if unaccounted permanent strain surrounding faults could contribute to slip rate discrepancies across disconnected faults within the Mojave Desert (California, USA) portion of the eastern California shear zone (ECSZ). We modified fault configurations derived from the Southern California Earthquake Center Community Fault Model to better represent the disconnected nature of active faults in the ECSZ south of the Garlock fault. The models with revised fault geometry produce slip rates that better match geologic strike-slip rates, thus validating the revisions. Within these models, off-fault deformation accounts for 40% ± 23% of the total strain across the ECSZ. This suggests that a significant portion of the discrepancy between the geologic and geodetically modeled slip rates in the ECSZ could be due to the geodetic inversion model assumption of zero permanent off-fault deformation. Late Cenozoic tectonic reconstructions of southern California (United States) have been hindered for decades by disagreement over the total displacement on the southern San Andreas fault; disparate estimates of dextral offset range from 160 km to 240 km. Prior estimates were based on purely translational models that neglect the effects of transrotational strain on the orientation and distribution of key geologic markers. We present a new reconstruction that integrates published lithologic, structural, and paleocurrent data with the effects of clockwise rotation in the eastern Transverse Ranges (ETR). This model yields 200 ± 14 km of cumulative offset on the southern San Andreas fault system in the Salton Trough. The disparity between our estimate and a lower estimate of 160 km for the Mojave segment can be explained by a combination of transtensional elongation along the southwest boundary of the ETR, transfer of strain to the eastern California shear zone, and diffuse crustal shortening in the Big Bend region. This reconstruction reconciles previously incompatible and long-debated models, and places an important new constraint on the tectonic evolution of the Pacific-North America plate boundary in southern California. Abstract: The Vetas-California Mining District (VCMD), located in the central part of the Santander Massif (Colombian Eastern Cordillera), based on U–Pb dating of zircons, records the following principal tectono-magmatic events: (1) the Grenville Orogenic event and high grade metamorphism and migmatitization between ∼1240 and 957 Ma; (2) early Ordovician calc–alkalic magmatism, which was synchronous with the Caparonensis–Famatinian Orogeny (∼477 Ma); (3) middle to late Ordovician post-collisional calc–alkalic magmatism (∼466–436 Ma); (4) late Triassic to early Jurassic magmatism between ∼204 and 196 Ma, characterized by both S- and I-type calc–alkalic intrusions and; (5) a late Miocene shallowly emplaced intermediate calc–alkaline intrusions (10.9 ± 0.2 and 8.4 ± 0.2 Ma). The presence of even younger igneous rocks is possible, given the widespread magmatic–hydrothermal alteration affecting all rock units in the area. The igneous rocks from the late Triassic–early Jurassic magmatic episodes are the volumetrically most important igneous rocks in the study area and in the Colombian Eastern Cordillera. They can be divided into three groups based on their field relationships, whole rock geochemistry and geochronology. These are early leucogranites herein termed Alaskites-I (204–199 Ma), Intermediate rocks (199–198 Ma), and late leucogranites, herein referred to as Alaskites-II (198–196 Ma). This Mesozoic magmatism is reflecting subtle changes in the crustal stress in a setting above an oblique subduction of the Panthalassa plate beneath Pangea. The lower Cretaceous siliciclastic Tambor Formation has detrital zircons of the same age populations as the metamorphic and igneous rocks present in the study area, suggesting that the provenance is related to the erosion of these local rocks during the late Jurassic or early Cretaceous, implying a local supply of sediments to the local depositional basins. Abstract: The California Channel Islands contain some of the best geologic records of past climate and sea-level changes, recorded in uplifted, fossil-bearing marine terrace deposits. Among the eight California Channel Islands and the nearby Palos Verdes Hills, only Santa Catalina Island does not exhibit prominent emergent marine terraces, though the same terrace-forming processes that acted on the other Channel Islands must also have occurred on Santa Catalina. We re-evaluated previous researchers'' field evidence and examined new topographic, bathymetric, and stream-profile data in order to find possible explanations for the lack of obvious marine terrace landforms or deposits on the island today. The most likely explanation is associated with the island''s unresolved tectonic history, with evidence for both recent uplift and subsidence being offered by different researchers. Bathymetric and seismic reflection data indicate the presence of submerged terrace-like landforms from a few meters below present sea level to depths far exceeding that of the lowest glacial lowstand, suggesting that the Catalina Island block may have subsided, submerging marine terraces that would have formed in the late Quaternary. Similar submerged marine terrace landforms exist offshore of all of the other California Channel Islands, including some at anomalously great depths, but late Quaternary uplift is well documented on those islands. Therefore, such submarine features must be more thoroughly investigated and adequately explained before they can be accepted as definitive evidence of subsidence. Nevertheless, the striking similarity of the terrace-like features around Santa Catalina Island to those surrounding the other, uplifting, Channel Islands prompted us to investigate other lines of evidence of tectonic activity, such as stream profile data. Recent uplift is suggested by disequilibrium stream profiles on the western side of the island, including nickpoints and profile convexities. Rapid uplift is also indicated by the island''s highly dissected, steep topography and abundant landslides. A likely cause of uplift is a restraining bend in the offshore Catalina strike-slip fault. Our analysis suggests that Santa Catalina Island has recently experienced, and may still be experiencing, relatively rapid uplift, causing intense landscape rejuvenation that removed nearly all traces of marine terraces by erosion. A similar research approach, incorporating submarine as well as subaerial geomorphic data, could be applied to many tectonically active coastlines in which a marine terrace record appears to be missing. Abstract: New data collected in central Crete on the ophiolite-bearing units, result in a better understanding of the role and tectonic significance of these units in the construction of this segment of the Hellenides. These nappes are composed of three main tectonic units that, characterized by different metamorphic facies conditions, are represented by an un-metamorphosed lower unit, a greenschist to HP greenschist-facies intermediate unit and a blueschist-facies upper unit. These chaotic thrust-nappes include blocks of oceanic and continental deriving rocks and can be considered as a remnant of an accretionary complex. The lower unit represents the toe of the wedge whereas the intermediate and upper units refer to the innermost and deeper subducted portions exhumed and superimposed on top of each other during the early stages of continental collision. The structural evolution of the accretionary wedge was controlled by four main contractional deformation events that, including distinct groups of structures developed at different crustal levels, were driven by SSE and SSW directions of tectonic transport. Our data strongly suggest that the ophiolite-bearing tectonic wedge was accreted during the Paleogene subduction of a Late Jurassic–Cretaceous oceanic realm beneath the continental margin of the Pelagonian domain and it was successively involved in the continental collision with the Adria Block. The greenschist to blueschist facies metamorphism and the subsequent exhumation and emplacement of the intermediate and upper units above the frontal portion of the wedge may mainly be due to deep duplexing marking the onset of continental collision. We thus suggest that the ophiolite-bearing units of Crete represent a single suture zone related to the closure of a unique oceanic domain (Pindos-Cycladic Ocean) subducted beneath the Internal Hellenides Platform continental domains thus assuming the significance of a southern oceanic seaway of the largest eastern Neotethys developed since the Triassic between Eurasia and Africa. Abstract: Exhumed high pressure–low temperature metamorphic mélanges of tectonic origin are believed to reflect high strain accumulated in large scale interplate shear zones during subduction. Rigid blocks of widely varying size are embedded in a weak matrix, which takes up the deformation and controls the rheology of the composite. The microfabrics of a highly deformed jadeite-blueschist from the Franciscan Complex, California, are investigated to help understand deformation mechanisms at depth. The specimen shows a transposed foliation with dismembered fold hinges and boudinage structures. Several generations of open fractures have been sealed to become veins at high-pressure metamorphic conditions. The shape of these veins, frequently restricted to specific layers, indicates distributed host rock deformation during and after sealing. Small cracks in jadeite and lawsonite are healed, with tiny quartz inclusions aligned along the former fracture surface. Large jadeite porphyroblasts show strain caps and strain shadows. Open fractures are sealed by quartz and new jadeite epitactically grown on the broken host. Monophase glaucophane aggregates consist of undeformed needles with a diameter between 0.1 and 2μm, grown after formation of isoclinal folds. Only quartz microfabrics indicate some stage of crystal-plastic deformation, followed by annealing and grain growth. Aragonite in the latest vein generation shows retrogression to calcite along its rims. The entire deformation happened under HP-LT metamorphic conditions in the stability field of jadeite and quartz, at temperatures between 300 and 450°C and pressures exceeding 1–1.4GPa. The microfabrics indicate that dissolution precipitation creep was the predominant deformation mechanism, accompanied by brittle failure and vein formation at quasi-lithostatic pore fluid pressure. This indicates low flow strength and, combined with high strain rates expected for localized deformation between the plates, a very low viscosity of material in the interplate shear zone at a depth>30–45km. Abstract: The San Andreas Fault zone in central California accommodates tectonic strain by stable slip and microseismic activity. We study microstructural controls of strength and deformation in the fault using core samples provided by the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) including gouge corresponding to presently active shearing intervals in the main borehole. The methods of study include high-resolution optical and electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence mapping, X-ray powder diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, white light interferometry, and image processing. The fault zone at the SAFOD site consists of a strongly deformed and foliated core zone that includes 2–3 m thick active shear zones, surrounded by less deformed rocks. Results suggest deformation and foliation of the core zone outside the active shear zones by alternating cataclasis and pressure solution mechanisms. The active shear zones, considered zones of large-scale shear localization, appear to be associated with an abundance of weak phases including smectite clays, serpentinite alteration products, and amorphous material. We suggest that deformation along the active shear zones is by a granular-type flow mechanism that involves frictional sliding of microlithons along phyllosilicate-rich Riedel shear surfaces as well as stress-driven diffusive mass transfer. The microstructural data may be interpreted to suggest that deformation in the active shear zones is strongly displacement-weakening. The fault creeps because the velocity strengthening weak gouge in the active shear zones is being sheared without strong restrengthening mechanisms such as cementation or fracture sealing. Possible mechanisms for the observed microseismicity in the creeping segment of the SAF include local high fluid pressure build-ups, hard asperity development by fracture-and-seal cycles, and stress build-up due to slip zone undulations. Abstract: The plate boundary between the Scotia and Antarctic plates runs along the broadly E–W trending South Scotia Ridge. It is a mainly transcurrent margin that juxtaposes thinned continental and transitional crust elements with restricted oceanic basins and deep troughs. Seismic profiles and regional-scale seismological constraints are used to define the peculiarities of the crustal structures in and around the southern Scotia Sea, and focal solutions from recent earthquakes help to understand the present-day geodynamic setting. The northern edge of the western South Scotia Ridge is marked by a sub-vertical, left-lateral master fault. Locally, a narrow wedge of accreted sediments is present at the base of the slope. This segment represents the boundary between the Scotia plate and the independent South Shetland continental block. Along the northern margin of the South Orkney microcontinent, the largest fragment of the South Scotia Ridge, an accretionary prism is present at the base of the slope, which was possibly created by the eastward drift of the South Orkney microcontinent and the consequent subduction of the transitional crust present to the north. East of the South Orkney microcontinent, the physiography and structure of the plate boundary are less constrained. Here the tectonic regime exhibits mainly strike–slip behavior with some grade of extensional component, and the plate boundary is segmented by a series of NNW–SSE trending release zones which favored the fragmentation and dispersion of the crustal blocks. Seismic data have also identified, along the north-western edge of the South Scotia Ridge, an elevated region – the Ona Platform – which can be considered, along with the Terror Rise, as the conjugate margin of the Tierra del Fuego, before the Drake Passage opening. We propose here an evolutionary sketch for the plate boundary (from the Late Oligocene to the present) encompassing the segment from the Elephant Island platform to the Herdman Bank. Abstract: The migration of the Mendocino Triple Junction in northern California creates a complicated lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary system at shallow depths (<60km), following the progressive transition from Cascadia subduction to San Andreas transform motion. It provides a natural laboratory to examine lithospheric evolution associated with slab removal in an active tectonic setting. However, pathways of the asthenospheric sources that fill the slab-free region created by the triple junction migration remain unclear. Previous active source profiles and body-wave tomography are limited to either crustal or a deeper upper mantle scale, respectively. In this study, we present a three-dimensional shear velocity model from joint inversion of ambient noise (8–30s) and ballistic Rayleigh wave dispersion curves (22–100s), as well as Ps receiver functions, using 111 stations from the Flexible Array Mendocino Experiment, USArray Transportable Array and the regional Berkeley Digital Seismic Network. In the crust, we have observed the low-Vs Franciscan Complex in the Coast Ranges and the relatively high-Vs Great Valley ophiolite abutting the low-Vs Sierran basement. The low-Vs uppermost mantle imaged near the sudden steepening of the subducted oceanic slab extends seismic evidence for forearc mantle serpentinization further south along the Cascadia margin. In addition to the asthenosphere beneath the Gorda plate, the joint inversion Vs model further identifies three other young asthenospheres resulting from different partial melting mechanisms. Northward motion of the triple junction causes asthenospheric flow both from under the Gorda plate and from the cooling former mantle wedge left under the Great Valley and Sierra Nevada, imaged from the joint inversion as a relatively deep (>75km) low-Vs anomaly. These two mantle flows appear to begin mixing ~100km south of the southern edge of the Gorda plate in the slab window region. We speculate that the latter provides the wedge-type geochemical signature seen in the Coast Range volcanic rocks, reconciling slab window models and volcanic geochemistry. Abstract: What controls the chemical weathering of soils in tectonically active landscapes? Recent field and modeling studies suggest that tectonic forcing and associated increases in erosion rates may either promote or hinder soil chemical weathering. These competing trajectories are dependent on two primary controls: the availability of fresh minerals and their residence time on the landsurface. Here, we explore rates and extents of soil weathering in the San Gabriel Mountains of California, where previous work has measured clear tectonic fingerprints on rates of long term exhumation, hillslope erosion and landscape morphology. We quantify chemical weathering across this landscape by elemental analysis of soils, saprolites and bedrock on six sites that bracket the low-gradient hillslopes of the relict upland plateau and the high-gradient hillslopes at the margins of the tectonically-driven incising landscape. Average chemical depletion fractions, which measure weathering losses from soil relative to unweathered parent material, decrease with increasing elevation and decreasing temperature, reflecting a combination of climate influence and potential dust inputs from the Mojave Desert. Weathering fluxes from non-dust-affected sites with similar elevations, climates and lithology correlate with both erosion rates and hillslope gradient. On low-gradient hillslopes (<25°), weathering rates increase with increasing erosion rates, reflecting the influence of mineral supply. However, on high-gradient hillslopes (>25°), weathering intensities and rates both decrease as erosion rates increase and soils thin. At the highest denudation rates (>300tkm−2 y−1), saprolite production is outpaced, and soils are produced directly from fractured rock. These patterns are consistent with those predicted by a previously published model for denudation–weathering relationships based on mineral weathering kinetics. Variable weathering extents in soils indicate that weathering in the SGM is largely kinetically limited. This study is the first to quantify decreases in both rates and extents of soil chemical weathering with increasing erosion rates, and suggests tectonic uplift in rapidly eroding and incising landscapes may not stimulate increased silicate weathering. Abstract: A recent evaluation of Martis Creek Dam highlighted the potential for dam failure due to either seepage or an earthquake on nearby faults. In 1972, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed this earthen dam, located within the Truckee Basin to the north of Lake Tahoe, CA for water storage and flood control. Past attempts to raise the level of the Martis Creek Reservoir to its design level have been aborted due to seepage at locations downstream, along the west dam abutment, and at the base of the spillway. In response to these concerns, the U.S. Geological Survey has undertaken a comprehensive suite of geophysical investigations aimed at understanding the interplay between geologic structure, seepage patterns, and reservoir and groundwater levels. This paper concerns the geologic structure surrounding Martis Creek Dam and emphasizes the importance of a regional-scale understanding to the interpretation of engineering-scale geophysical data. Our studies reveal a thick package of sedimentary deposits interbedded with Plio-Pleistocene volcanic flows; both the deposits and the flows are covered by glacial outwash. Magnetic field data, seismic tomography models, and seismic reflections are used to determine the distribution and chronology of the volcanic flows. Previous estimates of depth to basement (or the thickness of the interbedded deposits) was 100m. Magnetotelluric soundings suggest that electrically resistive bedrock may be up to 2500m deep. Both the Polaris Fault, identified outside of the study area using airborne LiDAR, and the previously unnamed Martis Creek Fault, have been mapped through the dam area using ground and airborne geophysics. Finally, as determined by direct-current resistivity imaging, time-domain electromagnetic sounding, and seismic refraction, the paleotopography of the interface between the sedimentary deposits and the overlying glacial outwash plays a principal role both in controlling groundwater flow and in the distribution of the observed seepage. A magnetotelluric profile consisting of 14 sites and spanning 240 km from the San Joaquin Valley to the Nevada border was installed across the central Sierra Nevada, through Yosemite National Park, in an effort to constrain the northward extent of lithospheric removal beneath the range. Broadband and long-period instruments from the EMSOC (Electromagnetic Studies of the Continents) consortium were used to record data with periods ranging from 0.01 to 20,000 s, allowing the conductivity structure beneath the Sierra to be imaged to a depth of 120 km. Two-dimensional models reveal that the batholith's resistive root extends to a depth of just 30 km beneath the eastern Sierra and 45 km beneath the western Sierra. The batholith is separated by a thin conductive zone that coincides with the Moho from a resistive mantle structure at a depth of ∼55 km. We propose that this resistive structure is residual root. Deeper, a broad conductive feature dipping eastward at depths of 65-100 km below the range is upwelling asthenosphere containing <1% melt that originates from the extensional tectonic regime of the Basin and Range to the east. The stretching and break-up of tectonic plates by rifting control the evolution of continents and oceans, but the processes by which lithosphere deforms and accommodates strain during rifting remain enigmatic. Using scattering of teleseismic shear waves beneath rifted zones and adjacent areas in Southern California, we resolve the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary and lithospheric thickness variations to directly constrain this deformation. Substantial and laterally abrupt lithospheric thinning beneath rifted regions suggests efficient strain localization. In the Salton Trough, either the mantle lithosphere has experienced more thinning than the crust, or large volumes of new lithosphere have been created. Lack of a systematic offset between surface and deep lithospheric deformation rules out simple shear along throughgoing unidirectional shallow-dipping shear zones, but is consistent with symmetric extension of the lithosphere. In the northern Sierra Nevada, California, Eocene--Oligocene fluvial sediments (the "auriferous gravels") rest unconformably in well-defined basement-incised paleovalleys, providing a record of paleolandscape geomorphology and drainage system evolution. Paleovalley surface mapping shows that local topography and bedrock lithology controlled the location of broad, terraced paleovalley segments, which formed in the central and eastern metamorphic bedrock belts and subsequently became areas of significant fluvial deposition. High-gradient, high-energy deposits are present near the edges of these areas, suggesting that tributaries and outlets resided in steeper, narrow paleovalleys. Multiple strath terraces are common in broad paleovalleys, indicating that incision events occurred both before deposition and during paleovalley widening, followed by periods of aggradation. Broad paleovalley deposits contain predominantly braided stream facies deposited in an energetically variable system. Multiple upward-fining cycles, bounded by erosional surfaces, are composed of alternating coarse-grained channel-belt and fine-grained floodplain packages. An overall upward-fining succession suggests that the locus of fluvial deposition shifted and depositional energy waned over time as the system backfilled successive broad paleovalleys. Paleochannel slope estimates of 0.004-- 0.055 were obtained based on average grain sizes of coarse channel fills. Anomalously thick (up to 11 m), laterally continuous (1--3 km) floodplain units, containing kaolinite-rich clay and Oxisol intervals, record high fine-grained sediment supply, driven by high rates of chemical weathering in the warm Eocene climate. Based on sedimentary characteristics, combined with floral and detrital zircon data, braided stream depo sition within the basin occurred from the late early Eocene through late Eocene , and aggradation primarily occurred in broad, lower-gradient reaches behind a major bedrock knickpoint, created in the late Mesozoic-- early Cenozoic, possibly due to asymmetric batholith unroofing. The diachronous, localized nature of paleovalley incision and braided stream aggradation within the northern Sierra Nevada invalidates previous estimates of the timing and amount of range uplift based on paleochannel reconstructions and gradients. Both internal and external drivers influenced the evolution of the fluvial system through (1) the pattern of basin filling, as the locus of deposition migrated east to west, (2) the warm Eocene climate, which increased chemical weathering and contributed a high sediment supply, and (3) changes in base level due to eustasy and/or Laramide tectonism. This record of Laramide tectonics in the Sierra Nevada and Basin and Range is important for the timing of Sierra Nevada uplift, for tectonic reconstructions of western North America, and for studies of landscape evolution in tectonically active orogens. Scattered igneous activity marks the Triassic margin of California, but an Andean volcanic-plutonic arc began to form in the Sierra Nevada--White-Inyo Range and Klamath Mountains at ca. 170 Ma during underflow of the oceanic lithosphere. This calc-alkaline belt supplied volcanogenic erosional debris to the Mariposa-Galice proximal overlap sequence by ca. 165--160 Ma. Transpression also generated high-pressure--low-temperature basaltic eclogites, garnet-blueschists, and amphibolites along the Middle and Late Jurassic convergent plate junction at ca. 170--155 Ma; most of these returned surface-ward as tectonic blocks only during the mid-Cretaceous. The high-grade metamafic (metamorphosed mafic) blocks that formed during construction of the emergent arc and derived Mariposa-Galice strata predate the onset of Franciscan trench deposition. Near the end of Jurassic time, the Klamath salient evidently migrated ~200 km westward. An earliest Cretaceous westward stepout of the convergent junction apparently formed directly offshore from the Klamath imbricate orogen, but to the south, preexisting oceanic crust--capped lithosphere was trapped landward as the Coast Range ophiolite. Andean arc detritus began to accumulate on this ophiolitic basement within the Great Valley forearc and outboard Franciscan oceanic trench at ca. 145--140 Ma. Because earliest Cretaceous, relatively continuous Great Valley strata were deposited on the stable North American plate, protected from both surface and subcrustal erosion, forearc terrigenous sedimentation also signaled coeval deposition in the outboard trench ~10--25 m.y. after Middle and Late Jurassic initiation of the continental margin calc-alkaline arc. Voluminous sedimentation and the accretion of Franciscan and San Joaquin sections of Great Valley rocks took place during mid- and Late Cretaceous time after a fl are-up in igneous arc activity at ~125--120 Ma. The youngest Sierran granites have ca. 85 Ma ages, refl ecting extinction of the magmagenic zone beneath northern and central California, and presumably refl ecting subhorizontal oceanic plate underflow attending the Laramide orogeny. Feebly zeolitized Upper Cretaceous and Lower Tertiary Franciscan Coastal belt rocks, derived from the now-inactive arc, under went only low-pressure burial metamorphism. Reflecting shallow offl oading and/or large-scale transpression, they were not appreciably subducted. Abstract: Detrital low temperature thermochronometric data provides spatial and temporal information on catchment erosion, which is relevant to problems in climate, tectonics and geomorphology. However, direct inference of erosion rates from such data is not trivial and only the simplest inverse problems have been addressed previously. In this paper, we present a new approach that relies on the Bayesian interpretation of probability and uses a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm for inversion, which affords flexibility in the choice of specific model parametrization and transparent assessment of model uncertainty. We demonstrate how a single detrital sample sourced from a high relief catchment can constrain long-term (>106 years) changes in erosion rate that are in good agreement with published bedrock age–elevation profiles. Furthermore, we use detrital data to jointly invert for long-term exhumation history and spatial variability in short-term (<103 years) sediment supply, information relevant to many geomorphic studies. Where cooling histories are simple, we show that even small sample sizes (<20grains) reliably estimate long-term rates of exhumation. We suggest that the presented approach to modeling detrital low-temperature thermochronometric data is both a powerful and efficient tool for solving tectonic and geomorphic problems. The article presents a study on the chronology of volcanic basaltic flows on relict surfaces west of Bishop, California. Most of the sampled basalt flows reportedly nearly accord with the present typography, with no more than 50 meters of landscape inversion. The article states that paleosurfaces from the Miocene can be preserved close to the summits of the Sierra Nevada with minimal erosion, and that they reflect a topographic history of the landscape.

Industry seismic reflection data, oil test well data, interpretation of gravity and magnetic data, and seismic refraction deepcrustal profiles provide new perspectives on the subsurface geology of San Fernando Valley , home of two of the most recent damaging earthquakes in southern California. Seismic reflection data provide depths to Miocene-Quaternary horizons; beneath the base of the Late Miocene Modelo Formation are largely nonreflective rocks of the Middle Miocene Topanga and older formations. Gravity and seismic reflection data reveal the North Leadwell fault zone, a set of down-tothe- north faults that does not offset the top of the Modelo Formation; the zone strikes northwest across the valley, and may be part of the Oak Ridge fault system to the west. In the southeast part of the valley, the fault zone bounds a concealed basement high that infl uenced deposition of the Late Miocene Tarzana fan and may have localized damage from the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Gravity and seismic refraction data indicate that the basin underlying San Fernando Valley is asymmetric, the north part of the basin (Sylmar subbasin) reaching depths of 5-8 km. Magnetic data suggest a major boundary at or near the Verdugo fault, which likely started as a Miocene transtensional fault, and show a change in the dip sense of the fault along strike. The northwest projection of the Verdugo fault separates the Sylmar subbasin from the main San Fernando Valley and coincides with the abrupt change in structural style from the Santa Susana fault to the Sierra Madre fault. The Simi Hills bound the basin on the west and, as defined by gravity data, the boundary is linear and strikes ∼N45 E. That northeasttrending gravity gradient follows both the part of the 1971 San Fernando aftershock distribution called the Chatsworth trend and the aftershock trends of the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Extension in Death Valley is usually interpreted as a combination of low-angle Basin and Range-style extension and strike slip associated with the developing Pacific-North America plate boundary in western North America, with these two tectonic regimes operating synchronously in Death Valley. Examination of structural, stratigraphic, and timing relationships in the region suggests that this interpretation needs revision. Evolution of Death Valley is best described as a two-stage process. In the first stage, lasting from ca. 18 to 5 Ma, low-angle Basin and Range extension transported allochthons consisting of Late Proterozoic through Early Paleozoic miogeoclinal section along detachment surfaces that, as extension continued, were exhumed from mid-lower crustal levels to the surface. Near the end of this extensional phase and lasting until ca. 3 Ma, deposition of a thick sequence of volcanics, clastics, and some lacustrine carbonates signaled a period of relative tectonic quiescence, with sediments in some areas covering the exhumed detachment surfaces. At ca. 3 Ma, initiation of the East California Shear Zone started development of the present-day topographic depression of Death Valley, formed as a pull-apart basin associated with this strike slip. Faulting broke the older, inactive, Basin and Range detachment surfaces, with high-angle transtensional faulting along the Black Mountains front. The Black Mountains were elevated as a result of footwall uplift, with the well-known turtleback structures being megamullions along these bounding faults. These megamullions are similar to those seen at oceanic spreading centers. The Panamint Range has previously been interpreted as an extensional allochthon, with the entire range transported from on top of or east of the Black Mountains. A new interpretation presented here is that the range is a large core complex similar to the core complex at Tucki Mountain, at the northern end of the range. The Basin and Range extensional detachment tracks over the top of the range, with extensional allochthons perched on the eastern flanks of the range. This modified model for evolution of Death Valley suggests a strong link between timing and style of deformation in the basin with the developing Pacific-North America plate boundary, particularly eastward propagation of this boundary. The eastern California shear zone (ECSZ) and Walker Lane represent an evolving segment of the Pacific-North America plate boundary in the western United States. Understanding temporal variations in strain accumulation and release along plate boundary structures is critical to assessing how deformation is accommodated throughout the lithosphere. Late Pleistocene displacement along the Lone Mountain fault suggests that the Silver Peak-Lone Mountain (SPLM) extensional complex is an important structure in accommodating and transferring strain within the ECSZ and Walker Lane. Using geologic and geomorphic mapping, differential global positioning system surveys, and terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN) geochronology, we determined rates of extension across the Lone Mountain fault in western Nevada. The Lone Mountain fault displaces the northwestern Lone Mountain and Weepah Hills piedmonts and is the northeastern component of the SPLM extensional complex, a series of down-to-the-northwest normal faults. We mapped seven distinct alluvial fan deposits and dated three of the surfaces using 10Be TCN geochronology, yielding ages of 16.5 ± 1.2 ka, 92 ± 9 ka, and 137 ± 25 ka for the Q3b, Q2c, and Q2b deposits, respectively. The ages were combined with scarp profile measurements across the displaced fans to obtain minimum rates of extension; the Q2b and Q2c surfaces yield an extension rate between 0.1 ± 0.1 and 0.2 ± 01 mm/yr and the Q3b surface yields a rate of 0.2 ± 0.1-0.4 ± 0.1 mm/yr, depending on the dip of the fault. Active extension on the Lone Mountain fault suggests that it helps partition strain off of the major strike-slip faults in the northern ECSZ and transfers deformation to the east around the Mina deflection and northward into the Walker Lane. Combining our results with estimates from other faults accommodating dextral shear in the northern ECSZ reveals an apparent discrepancy between short- and long-term rates of strain accumulation and release. If strain rates have remained constant since the late Pleistocene, this could refl ect transient strain accumulation, similar to the Mojave segment of the ECSZ. However, our data also suggest a potential increase in strain rates between ca. 92 ka and ca. 17 ka, and possibly to present day, which may also help explain the mismatch between long- and short-term rates of deformation in the region. We present a statistical analysis of focal mechanism orientations for nine California fault zones with the goal of quantifying variations of fault zone heterogeneity at seismogenic depths. The focal mechanism data are generated from first motion polarities for earthquakes in the time period 1983–2004, magnitude range 0–5, and depth range 0–15 km. Only mechanisms with good quality solutions are used. We define fault zones using 20 km wide rectangles and use summations of normalized potency tensors to describe the distribution of double-couple orientations for each fault zone. Focal mechanism heterogeneity is quantified using two measures computed from the tensors that relate to the scatter in orientations and rotational asymmetry or skewness of the distribution. We illustrate the use of these quantities by showing relative differences in the focal mechanism heterogeneity characteristics for different fault zones. These differences are shown to relate to properties of the fault zone surface traces such that increased scatter correlates with fault trace complexity and rotational asymmetry correlates with the dominant fault trace azimuth. These correlations indicate a link between the long-term evolution of a fault zone over many earthquake cycles and its seismic behaviour over a 20 yr time period. Analysis of the partitioning of San Jacinto fault zone focal mechanisms into different faulting styles further indicates that heterogeneity is dominantly controlled by structural properties of the fault zone, rather than time or magnitude related properties of the seismicity. High-resolution sonar surveys, and a detailed subsurface model constructed from 3D seismic and well data allowed investigation of the relationship between the subsurface geology and gas-phase (methane) seepage for the Coal Oil Point (COP) seep field, one of the world’s largest and best-studied marine oil and gas seep fields, located over a producing hydrocarbon reservoir near Santa Barbara, California. In general, the relationship between terrestrial gas seepage, migration pathways, and hydrocarbon reservoirs has been difficult to assess, in part because the detection and mapping of gas seepage is problematic. For marine seepage, sonar surveys are an effective tool for mapping seep gas bubbles, and thus spatial distributions. Seepage in the COP seep field occurs in an east–west-trending zone about 3–4 km offshore, and in another zone about 1–2 km from shore. The farthest offshore seeps are mostly located near the crest of a major fold, and also along the trend of major faults. Significantly, because faults observed to cut the fold do not account for all the observed seepage, seepage must occur through fracture and joint systems that are difficult to detect, including intersecting faults and fault damage zones. Inshore seeps are concentrated within the hanging wall of a major reverse fault. The subsurface model lacks the resolution to identify specific structural sources in that area. Although to first order the spatial distribution of seeps generally is related to the major structures, other factors must also control their distribution. The region is known to be critically stressed, which would enhance hydraulic conductivity of favorably oriented faults, joints, and bedding planes. Abstract: The relative importance of climatic and tectonic factors in driving rates of denudation in mountain ranges has long been debated, with both precipitation and rates of crustal uplift cited as first order controls in a variety of different mountainous settings. Few studies, however, have explicitly considered the influence of climatic and tectonic processes on denudation rates during the early stages of orogenesis. Using basin-wide denudation rates derived from in-situ cosmogenic 10Be, and published modern precipitation rate data, the significance of rainfall and snowfall on rates of denudation is evaluated for the San Bernardino Mountains, California. Denudation rates vary between 52mmka−1 in the arid northern regions of the mountains and 2700mmka−1 in the more humid southern sector. We select three basins where the influence of precipitation on denudation rates can be isolated from the effects of crustal uplift and find that there is no apparent relationship between denudation rates and precipitation. Denudation rates differ more than five-fold on the opposing slopes of Mill Creek, a valley bisected by a major splay of the San Andreas Fault, and we propose that this denudation rate disparity can be best explained by variations in uplift rates across the fault. The results suggest that crustal uplift is the mechanism that underpins the ∼50-fold variability in denudation rates we have measured in the San Bernardino Mountains, but that this must be facilitated by sufficient precipitation to remove valley-fill deposits. Using InSAR and hydrogeologic time-series spanning 1995 to 2000, we characterize the elastic storage and surface deformation in the vicinity of the San Bernardino basin, California. The region encompasses a complex major aquifer located at the junction of the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults that supplies groundwater to over 600,000 people. We remove the elastic vertical surface displacement associated with changes in groundwater levels from the InSAR time-series by a least squares inversion. Our method estimates a poroelastic ratio at 60 well sites, which we normalize by basin depth, allowing for comparison of the elastic response of the aquifer skeleton from site to site. Our method also estimates residual vertical displacement rates at each well site, surface displacement not explained by observed trends in groundwater levels. Residual vertical displacement rates reveal patterns of subsidence and uplift across the basin over the 5-yr period from 1995 to 2000. In a narrow zone of observed residual subsidence near the San Jacinto fault, where many normalized poroelastic ratios trend higher than expected, we find permanent compaction of clay-rich strata to be the most likely explanation for 0.5–2.0 mm yr–1 of residual subsidence. This permanent compaction is likely a result of delayed compaction due to previous overdraft conditions and/or a result of the installation of deep production wells during the span of the InSAR time-series. Observations of localized subsidence within stepovers of the San Jacinto fault zone and relative uplift at the range fronts are consistent with current basin development models; however, interseismic strain modelling of the regional faults does not reproduce the surface displacement pattern or magnitude of these observations. Two phases of deformation are needed to describe the Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the Pahrump and Mesquite basins in the southern Great Basin and eastern Mojave Desert, United States. By interpreting seismic refl ection and gravity observations along with bedrock and surfi cial mapping, we infer an extensional phase of basin formation followed by a transtensional phase, in this area straddling the border of southern Nevada and southeastern California.. We reprocessed 220 line km of industry seismic refl ection data from the Pahrump and Mesquite Valleys to emphasize refl ections in the basin fi ll, and combined these results with analysis of gravity data. The seismic lines portray the complex geometry of the Stateline fault system, a major Neogene dextral strike-slip system that passes through these valleys, and provide evidence for multiple ages of faulting along structures that bound the Pahrump basin. Locally thick sequences of preextensional Tertiary sedimentary rocks are cut by large-offset, relatively high- angle normal faults that record a phase of extensional basin formation that preceded transtension. The existence of preextensional basins beneath the Pahrump and Mesquite Valleys bears on tectonic reconstruction of the region and suggests that tilted ranges blocks to the west of these valleys need not restore to positions immediately adjacent to the Spring Mountains to the east. Subsequent dextral offset on the Stateline fault system resulted in the formation of steep-sided basins, local arching and tectonic inversion, and the burial of earlier-formed normal faults with coarse clastic detritus. Gravity models that are constrained to match the basin architecture observed in the seismic lines require lateral variations in basin-fi ll and bedrock density, and they confi rm that the Paleozoic outcrop of Black Butte, a topographic high separating the Pahrump and Mesquite Valleys, is unrooted to underlying bedrock. Abstract: Stream capture and piracy in tectonically active regions have been described in geomorphic systems worldwide; however, few studies show the influence stream capture has on the rock record. We present an analysis of fluvial fan stratigraphy that developed as a result of multiple stream capture events, building a complex stratigraphic succession beneath the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), California. The LLNL site is located in the southeast portion of the tectonically active Livermore Basin, a transpressional basin in the California Coast Ranges. Geomorphic evidence for this stream capture include: (1) the Arroyo Seco enters the basin from the south through an uplifted fault block, (2) south of this fault block lies an abandoned Arroyo Seco fluvial fan, (3) north of the fault block, in the Livermore Basin, Arroyo Seco built a 7-km2 fluvial fan, apparently forcing the Arroyo Las Positas, a smaller stream that enters the basin from the east, northward around the Arroyo Seco fan, and (4) a knickpoint exists near the point of capture on Arroyo Seco. Stratigraphic evidence reflecting this shift in the Arroyo Seco position into the Livermore Basin was evaluated through a provenance study of 215 gravel units from 34 boreholes spaced evenly over the 2.6km2 LLNL site. The Arroyo Seco derives its sediment from both the Jurassic–Cretaceous Franciscan Assemblage and the Altamont Hills (which are comprised of Mesozoic Great Valley Group and Tertiary continental sediments). The Arroyo Las Positas drains only the Altamont Hills and thus lacks the Franciscan Assemblage-derived clasts. The origin of the individual gravel units was determined by the percentage of Franciscan Assemblage indicator pebbles (red chert, green chert and blueschist) in the samples. Through this analysis, we determined that high-percentage Franciscan Assemblage-derived clasts were present below a depth of approximately 35m below the surface, low-percentage Franciscan Assemblage-derived clasts were present at depths between 35m and 18m, and high-percentage Franciscan Assemblage-derived clasts were present from depths of approximately 18m to the surface of the fluvial fan. These results indicate that the Arroyo Seco flowed north and deposited sediments at the LLNL site, then was later absent from the basin at which time it formed a fan south of the fault block. During this absence of the Arroyo Seco, the Arroyo Las Positas, a westerly flowing stream, dominated the sediment supply at the LLNL site. The Arroyo Seco was then captured by a gully headward eroding through the uplifted fault block, redirecting the Arroyo Seco into the basin once again. The middle Jurassic Coast Range Ophiolite (CRO) is one of the most important tectonic elements in western California, cropping out as tectonically dismembered elements that extend 700 km from south to north. The volcanic and plutonic sections are commonly interpreted to represent a supra-subduction zone (SSZ) ophiolite, but models specifying a mid-ocean ridge origin have also been proposed. These contrasting interpretations have distinctly different implications for the tectonic evolution of the western Cordillera in the Jurassic. If an SSZ origin is confirmed, we can use the underlying mantle peridotites to elucidate melt processes in the mantle wedge above the subduction zone. This study uses laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA–ICP–MS) to study pyroxenes in peridotites from four mantle sections in the CRO. Trace element signatures of these pyroxenes record magmatic processes characteristic of both mid-ocean ridge and supra-subduction zone settings. Group A clinopyroxene display enriched REE concentrations [e.g., Gd (0.938–1.663 ppm), Dy (1.79–3.24 ppm), Yb (1.216–2.047 ppm), and Lu (0.168–0.290 ppm)], compared to Group B and C clinopyroxenes [e.g., Gd (0.048–0.055 ppm), Dy (0.114–0.225 ppm), Yb (0.128–0.340 ppm), and Lu (0.022–0.05 ppm)]. These patterns are also evident in orthopyroxene. The differences between these geochemical signatures could be a result of a heterogeneous upper mantle or different degrees of partial melting of the upper mantle. It will be shown that CRO peridotites were generated through fractional melting. The shapes of REE patterns are consistent with variable degrees of melting initiated within the garnet stability field. Models call for 3% dry partial melting of MORB-source asthenosphere in the garnet lherzolite field for abyssal peridotites and 15–20% further partial melting in the spinel lherzolite field, possibly by hydrous melting for SSZ peridotites. These geochemical variations and occurrence of both styles of melting regimes within close spatial and temporal association suggest that certain segments of the CRO may represent oceanic lithosphere, attached to a large-offset transform fault and that east-dipping, proto-Franciscan subduction may have been initiated along this transform. A three-dimensional geomechanical model of Southern California, including mountain relief, fault tectonics, and characteristic internal borders, such as the roof of the consolidated crust and Moho surface, was created. The initial stress state of the model is determined by the gravitational force and horizontal tectonic movement, established on basis of GPS observations. Monitoring of variations in the stress state of the Earth’s crust and lithosphere, which are generated by seismic processes, has shown that the model enables us to predict an increase of seismic activity in a region and to mark the places in which average earthquakes can occur in the following two weeks. Fault strength is a fundamental property of seismogenic zones, and its temporal changes can increase or decrease the likelihood of failure and the ultimate triggering of seismic events. Although changes in fault strength have been suggested to explain various phenomena, such as the remote triggering of seismicity, there has been no means of actually monitoring this important property in situ. Here we argue that ∼20 years of observation (1987–2008) of the Parkfield area at the San Andreas fault have revealed a means of monitoring fault strength. We have identified two occasions where long-term changes in fault strength have been most probably induced remotely by large seismic events, namely the 2004 magnitude (M) 9.1 Sumatra–Andaman earthquake and the earlier 1992 M = 7.3 Landers earthquake. In both cases, the change possessed two manifestations: temporal variations in the properties of seismic scatterers—probably reflecting the stress-induced migration of fluids—and systematic temporal variations in the characteristics of repeating-earthquake sequences that are most consistent with changes in fault strength. In the case of the 1992 Landers earthquake, a period of reduced strength probably triggered the 1993 Parkfield aseismic transient as well as the accompanying cluster of four M > 4 earthquakes at Parkfield. The fault-strength changes produced by the distant 2004 Sumatra–Andaman earthquake are especially important, as they suggest that the very largest earthquakes may have a global influence on the strength of the Earth’s fault systems. As such a perturbation would bring many fault zones closer to failure, it should lead to temporal clustering of global seismicity. Abstract: A high degree of correlation between present-day relative rock uplift measured using continuous GPS geodesy and spatially averaged surface elevations suggests that long-wavelength topographic relief is presently increasing along the southeastern flank of the Sierra Nevada range and within an adjacent portion of the northern Basin and Range province. Current estimates for erosion rate are an order of magnitude smaller than the relative rates determined by geodesy. Thus, although the uplift serves to enhance long-wavelength relief, it cannot be explained entirely as an isostatic response to erosion. If uplift rates have been constant through time, the duration over which the uplift could have been active (<1.6Myrs) is shorter than expected based on our current understanding of the geodynamic history of the region. One possible explanation for the observed present-day uplift pattern is that it represents an ongoing isostatic response to gradual reduction of the equivalent elastic thickness (EET) of the lithosphere under temporally constant loads. Another explanation is that the loads currently supporting the high elevations of the southern Sierra are evolving with time. According to either hypothesis, vertical surface motions may have slowly accelerated since ~mid-Pliocene time. Several possible mechanisms for progressive reduction of EET may be attributable to thermo-mechanical disequilibrium that began with the removal of an ultramafic root from the Sierran batholith during late Miocene or early Pliocene time. Specific mechanisms for ongoing enhancement of loads are less obvious. Based on these results, we suggest that dense networks of long-running continuous GPS stations around the world currently represent an underutilized resource for studies of orogenesis and upper mantle processes. Globally, normal-fault displacement bends and warps rift flanks upwards, as adjoining basins drop downwards. Perhaps the most evident manifestations are the flanks of the East African Rift, which cuts across the otherwise minimally deformed continent. Flank uplift was explained by Vening Meinesz (1950, Institut Royal Colonial Belge, Bulletin des Seances, v. 21, p. 539-552), who recognized that isostasy should cause uplift of a normal-faulted footwall and subsidence of its hanging wall. Uplift occurs because slip on a dipping normal fault creates a broader root of less-dense material beneath the footwall, and a narrowed one beneath the hanging wall. In this paper, we investigate the potential influence of this process on the latest stages of Sierra Nevada uplift. Through theoretical calculations and 3D finite element modelling, we find that cumulative slip of about 4 km on range-front faults would have produced about 1.3 km peak isostatic uplift at the ridge crest. Numerical models suggest that the zone of uplift is narrow, with the width controlled by bending resistance of the seismogenic crust. We conclude that footwall unloading cannot account for the entire elevation of the Sierran crest above sea level, but if range-front faulting initiated in an already elevated plateau like the adjacent Basin and Range Province, then a hybrid model of pre-existing regional uplift and localized footwall unloading can account for the older and newer uplift phases suggested by the geologic record. Most of the 150 km-long Owens Valley of east-central California, the westernmost graben of the Basin and Range Province and location of the active right-lateral Owens Valley Fault Zone, is filled with more than 2-3 km of Neogene sediments. Two prominent but structurally enigmatic basement blocks, the Alabama Hills and Poverty Hills, rise from the floor of the southern part of the valley. The late Cenozoic tectonic origin of these basement blocks is not known, but previously published hypotheses include: (1) transpressional uplifts; (2) down-dropped normal fault blocks; and (3) giant landslides from adjacent ranges. We measured apatite (U-Th)/He ages on 15 samples from the Alabama and Poverty Hills to understand the history of shallow crustal exhumation of these structures, and to potentially correlate them to rocks from adjacent ranges. Apatite He ages for the Alabama and Poverty Hills range from ∼63 to 52 and ∼61 to 39 Ma, respectively, with one sample from the Alabama Hills yielding an older weighted mean age of 79.3 ± 2.2 Ma (2σ). These ages are similar to those measured at elevations 1.5-3.0 km higher in both the adjacent Sierra Nevada and White/Inyo Mountains. Together with a lack of evidence for transpressional structures and the presence of extensive weathering of an ancient inherited surface on top of the Alabama Hills, these results are most consistent with an origin as a down-dropped normal fault block. A structural reconstruction using tilt-corrected southern Sierra Nevada age-elevation correlations requires 2.6 km of vertical and 1.5 km of eastward motion for the Alabama Hills along the Sierra Nevada Frontal Fault. Although we cannot conclusively rule out a landslide origin, our preferred explanation for the Poverty Hills data is that it is a down-dropped normal fault block that was transported from the Inyo Mountains along a right-lateral fault possessing a significant normal component. Obliquity of the strain velocity field to the deformation zone boundary requires strain to be triaxial. At the plate boundary scale, fault geometries predicted by transtensional theory better explain observed fault patterns in the northern Eastern California shear zone-Walker Lane area than do 2D plane strain predictions. Structural provinces in the Eastern California shear zone-Walker Lane are defined by variations in the orientation of the eastern margin of the Sierra Nevada microplate, and include the Honey Lake-Pyramid Lake, Lake Tahoe, Mono Lake-Long Valley, Owens Valley, and Coso subprovinces. The local geometry of the transtensional zone boundary and the microplate transport direction determines orientations of the instantaneous strain axes for each province. Fault orientations predicted with respect to these axes are consistent with those observed in each structural province. The variation of zone geometry among predominantly coaxially dominated strain provinces over a consistent period of deformation does not result in dramatic changes in shape or orientation among finite strain ellipsoids. Although Quaternary faulting strongly reflects transtensional kinematics, the magnitude of estimated finite strain for each province suggests that present-day transtensional deformation has not accommodated large amounts of extension, vertical thinning, or strike-slip offset. K-values for all structural provinces plot in the k>1 constrictional field on the logarithmic Flinn (Ramsay) diagram, indicating non-plane, transtensional strain. Collectively, these theoretical applications and structural-tectonic observations have implications for evaluating kinematics and faulting during brittle non-plane strain deformation, and for the overall evolution of the transtensional Sierra Nevada-North America plate boundary. The Miocene Stanislaus Group (Stanislaus, Calaveras, Tuolomne, Alpine and Mono counties, CA), composed of intercalated latite and quartz-latite (trachyandesite and trachyte/trachydacite) lavas and ignimbrites, provides an important marker for reconstructing the elevation history and tectonic development of the Sierra Nevada and Walker Lane. We present new 40Ar/39Ar geochronology and magnetostratigraphy indicating that the Stanislaus Group was emplaced in two pulses: (1) major outpouring of latite lavas at ca. 10.4 Ma and (2) ignimbrite eruptions alternating with lesser lava flow eruptions during ca. 9.4-9.8 Ma. These two events filled the ancestral Stanislaus River drainage in the region of the present Sierra Nevada crest, whereas the ignimbrite eruptions formed the Little Walker Caldera. The modern Sierra Nevada and Great Basin were likely the site of a high-elevation orogenic plateau well into Cenozoic time, supported by crust thickened during Mesozoic shortening. Although crustal thickening at this scale can lead to extension, the relationship between Mesozoic shortening and subsequent formation of the Basin and Range is difficult to unravel because it is unclear which of the many documented or interpreted extensional episodes was the most significant for net widening and crustal thinning. To address this problem, we integrate geologic and geochronologic data that bear on the timing and magnitude of Cenozoic extension along an ∼200 km east-west transect south of Winnemucca, Battle Mountain, and Elko, Nevada. Pre-Cenozoic rocks in this region record east-west Palaeozoic and Mesozoic compression that continued into the Cretaceous. Little to no tectonism and no deposition followed until intense magmatism began in the Eocene. Eocene and Oligocene ash-flow tuffs flowed as much as 200 km down palaeovalleys cut as deeply as 1.5 km into underlying Palaeozoic and Mesozoic rocks in a low-relief landscape. Eocene sedimentation was otherwise limited to shallow lacustrine basins in the Elko area; extensive, thick clastic deposits are absent. Minor surface extension related to magmatism locally accompanied intense Eocene magmatism, but external drainage and little or no surface deformation apparently persisted regionally until about 16-17 Ma. Major upper crustal extension began across the region ca. 16-17 Ma, as determined by cross-cutting relationships, low-temperature thermochronology, and widespread deposition of clastic basin fill. Middle Miocene extension was partitioned into high-strain (50-100%) domains separated by largely unextended crustal blocks, and ended by 10-12 Ma. Bimodal volcanic rocks that erupted during middle Miocene extension are present across most of the study area, but are volumetrically minor outside the northern Nevada rift. The modern physiographic basins and ranges formed during a distinctly different episode of extension that began after about 10 Ma and has continued to the present. Late Miocene and younger faulting is characterized by widely spaced, high-angle normal faults that cut both older extended and unextended domains. Major widening of the Basin and Range at this latitude thus took place during a relatively brief interval in the middle Miocene, and the lack of major shortening west of the Sierra Nevada at this time suggests that the change in the plate margin from microplate subduction to lengthy transtensional strike-slip played an important role in allowing extension to occur when it did, as rapidly as it did. The onset of extension ca. 16-17 Ma was coeval with both Columbia River flood-basalt volcanism and the hypothesized final delamination of the shallow Farallon slab that lay beneath the western USA in the early Tertiary. However, it is unclear if these events were necessary prerequisites for extension, simply coincidental, or themselves consequences of rapid extension and/or reorganization of the plate boundary. Swarm-like earthquake sequences are commonly observed in a diverse range of geological settings including volcanic and geothermal regions as well as along transform plate boundaries. They typically lack a clear mainshock, cover an unusually large spatial area relative to their total seismic moment release, and fail to decay in time according to standard aftershock scaling laws. Swarms often result from a clear driving phenomenon, such as a magma intrusion, but most lack the necessary geophysical data to constrain their driving process. To identify the mechanisms that cause swarms on strike-slip faults, we use relative earthquake locations to quantify the spatial and temporal characteristics of swarms along Southern California and East Pacific Rise transform faults. Swarms in these regions exhibit distinctive characteristics, including a relatively narrow range of hypocentral migration velocities, on the order of a kilometre per hour. This rate corresponds to the rupture propagation velocity of shallow creep transients that are sometimes observed geodetically in conjunction with swarms, and is significantly faster than the earthquake migration rates typically associated with fluid diffusion. The uniformity of migration rates and low effective stress drops observed here suggest that shallow aseismic creep transients are the primary process driving swarms on strike-slip faults. Moreover, the migration rates are consistent with laboratory values of the rate-state friction parameter b (0.01) as long as the Salton Trough faults fail under hydrostatic conditions. The Sierra Nevada and Great Valley are coupled, and behave as a semi-rigid microplate. The microplate formed as it was calved off the western edge of the Nevadaplano in the late Miocene, at which time westward regional tilting began. Tilting is controlled by west-side-up normal faulting primarily along the eastern Sierra escarpment system. Uplift and exhumation along the eastern Sierra are balanced by subsidence and sedimentation along the western Great Valley. The west tilt of the microplate is expressed by the west slope of a regional relict landscape surface that developed across much of the Sierra Nevada basement, and by the westward continuation of the surface as the basal Eocene nonconformity of the west-dipping Great Valley Tertiary section. The rigid behaviour of the microplate breaks down along its southern ∼100-150 km segment as expressed by seismicity, pervasive faulting and the development of a deep marine basin, the San Joaquin Basin (SJB), whose facies and palaeogeographic patterns diverge from regional patterns of the rest of the Great Valley. The disrupted state of the southern segment of the microplate resulted from its Late Cretaceous position above a regional lateral ramp in the underlying Franciscan-related subduction megathrust. The Kern Canyon fault system began its polyphase history as a complex oblique dextral shear zone above the megathrust lateral ramp. It was remobilized in the Neogene as an oblique transfer structure partitioning differential extension between the southern Sierra Nevada and the SJB. In Quaternary time, the Kern Canyon zone was again remobilized as a west-side-up normal fault system whose geomorphic and structural expressions are best developed south of ∼36.4° N. This normal fault system controls the west tilt of the relict landscape surface in the southern Sierra region, as well as the west dip pattern in the strata of the adjacent SJB. To the east of the Kern Canyon normal fault system, the relict landscape surface slopes continuously southwards from the high eastern Sierra into a low-lying, multiply extended terrane. Thus, from ∼36.4° N southwards, the west tilt along the western Sierra and the west dip of the adjacent Great Valley strata are controlled by the Kern Canyon system. Fresh normal scarps along the eastern Sierra escarpment system become more subdued and ultimately die out southwards from ∼36.4° N. Thus, currently, the controlling structure for the west tilt of the microplate steps westwards in the south from the eastern escarpment system over to the Kern Canyon system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Sierra Nevada of California is the longest and tallest mountain range in the co-terminus USA, and has long been regarded as topographically very young ( < 6 Ma); however, recent work has provided evidence that the range is very old (>80 Ma), and represents the western shoulder of a Tibetan-like plateau (the Nevadaplano) that was centred over Nevada. A great deal of effort has been invested in applying modern laboratory and geophysical techniques to understanding the Sierra Nevada, yet some of the most unambiguous constraints on the Sierran landscape evolution are derived from field studies of dated strata preserved in the palaeochannels/palaeocanyons that crossed the range in Cenozoic time. Our work in the Sierra Nevada suggests that neither end-member model is correct for the debate regarding youth vs. antiquity of the range. Many features of the Cenozoic palaeocanyons and palaeochannels reflect the shape of the Cretaceous orogen, but they were also affected by Miocene tectonic and magmatic events. In the central Sierra Nevada, we infer that the inherited Cretaceous landscape was modified by three Miocene tectonic events, each followed by ∼2-5 Myr of subduction-induced magmatism and sedimentation during a period of relative tectonic quiescence. The first event, at about 16 Ma, corresponds to the westward sweep of the Ancestral Cascades arc front into the Sierra Nevada and adjacent western Nevada. We suggest that this caused thermal uplift and extension. The second event, at about 11-10 Ma, records the birth of the 'future plate boundary' by transtensional faulting and voluminous high-K volcanism at the western edge of the Walker Lane belt. The third event, at about 8-7 Ma, is associated with renewed range-front faulting in the central Sierra, and rejuvenation and beheading of the palaeocanyons. Volcanic pulses closely followed all three events, and we tentatively infer that footwall uplift of the Sierra Nevada occurred during all three events. By analogy with the ∼11 Ma event, we speculate that high-K volcanic rocks in the southern part of the range mark the inception of yet a fourth pulse of range-front faulting at 3-3.5 Ma, which resulted in a fourth tilting and crestal uplift event. Cenozoic rocks along the western edge of the Nevadaplano record the following variation, from the central to the northern Sierra: decrease in crustal thickness (and presumably palaeoelevation), decrease in palaeorelief and attendant decrease in coarse-grained fluvial- and mass-wasting deposits, and greater degree of encroachment by Walker Lane-related faults beginning at 10-11 Ma. By mapping and dating Cenozoic strata in detail, we show that what is now the Sierra Nevada was, at least in part, shaped by the Miocene structural and magmatic events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We determine the paleoelevation of the northern Sierra Nevada (California) in the Oligocene based on hydrogen stable isotope compositions of meteoric water preserved within volcanic glass from ignimbrites sampled across the range. A 48‰ decrease in the isotopic composition of hydrated glass from ignimbrites located near paleosea level to ignimbrites 100 km to the east reflects the effect of ancient high topography on precipitation. These data show that 31-28 Ma ago, the northern Sierra Nevada had a steep western gradient and elevations similar to the present. This study, placed in the context of other paleoaltimetry studies, suggests that the range was a high topographic feature throughout the Cenozoic and that the majority of uplift occurred in the Late Cretaceous to early Cenozoic, much earlier than some studies have proposed.
