The article features a ceramic tree made by ceramic artist Paula Smith. One of the initial inspirations for Smith's Tree of Life was an altar she encountered in San Antonio, Texas. Smith also became fascinated with the texture and design of tree bark after visiting Yosemite, California. According to Smith, she originally thought the entire surface of the tree would look like the bark she created for the trunk but her ideas changed through the building process. Smith says everyone who sees her tree connects with all or some aspects of the tree.
