Purpose: The coach-athlete relationship mediates the relationship between sports participation and student-athlete character, health and well-being outcomes. High school athletic administrators (AAs) can provide critical leadership, mentorship and direction for coaches to optimize student-athlete performance and human development. Social and emotional learning (SEL) is an evidence-based approach to developing adult and student competencies for holistic development across the lifespan that has been primarily performed and researched in the classroom. The purpose of this research is to capture the lived experiences of AAs applying a novel SEL-based curriculum (InSideOut Initiative, ISOI) with coaches and student-athletes in high school sports. Design/methodology/approach: Interviews of 10 AAs captured their lived experiences of applying SEL-based leadership and coaching and their perception of its impact on coaches and student-athletes in high school athletics. Findings: AAs described leadership and coaching that are characterized by (1) safety, support and mentorship; (2) skill and support-based behavior modeling; (3) trusting, loving and supportive relationships; (4) self-reflection of values/beliefs and behaviors that impact self, student-athlete and culture; (5) the influence of emotions on the aforementioned; (6) the ability to have a long-term, sustainable impact on student-athletes and (7) alignment with their immediate environmental context. Research limitations/implications: The data captured in this study suggest that ISOI-trained AAs practice SEL-competent leadership and coaching. Evaluation of the novel application of SEL-based interventions in athletics will be useful to understanding their effects on participant social and emotional competencies and outcomes traditionally associated with classroom-based SEL applications. Practical implications: Athletic administrator interviews describe an approach to high school sports that requires a reconceptualization of the purpose of athletics. When the high school sport operates as a curriculum, integrated opportunity for its student-athletes and athletic administrator and coach leadership aligns with this overarching philosophy, there may be increased potential for positive youth development. Originality/value: The results of this research are valuable in demonstrating preliminary evidence of how SEL-based leadership and coaching is applied and impacts adult and student-athletes in a unique sport context.

Disasters are deeply affecting communities and economies in the United States, and the role of Cooperative Extension in disaster management efforts continues to grow. We surveyed University of California Extension personnel to identify existing disaster management programs and future needs. We found that about one third of our respondents had been involved in preparing for, responding to, or helping communities recover from disasters. Respondents experienced having a variety of needs related to disaster preparedness and response systems, procedures, materials and equipment, and educational materials. Our findings revealed a critical need for program and professional development around disaster management for Cooperative Extension personnel.

Background: California Senate Bill 630 (SB630) enacted statutorily mandated health plan coverage for orthodontic care of patients with cleft palate and craniofacial anomalies in 2009, which was effective from July 1, 2010. In this qualitative analysis, third-party compliance with SB630 in a university-based cleft and craniofacial orthodontic program is evaluated. Methods: Privately insured patients that experienced a coverage delay or denial of orthodontic treatment for cleft lip and palate in the University of California, San Francisco Cleft and Craniofacial Orthodontic Program between July 1, 2010 and October 28, 2020 were identified. A thematic analysis of reasons for delay or denial was conducted. Results: Nearly three quarters of patients experienced coverage delay and/or denials. The most common reason given was that services were not covered. Conclusions: Despite state-mandated coverage, inappropriate denials of orthodontic care for patients with cleft lip and palate by private insurers persist in California. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

California is a global leader in the agricultural sector and produces more than 400 types of commodities. The state produces over a third of the country's vegetables and two-thirds of its fruits and nuts. Despite being highly productive, current and future climate change poses many challenges to the agricultural sector. This paper provides a summary of the current state of knowledge on historical and future trends in climate and their impacts on California agriculture. We present a synthesis of climate change impacts on California agriculture in the context of: (1) historic trends and projected changes in temperature, precipitation, snowpack, heat waves, drought, and flood events; and (2) consequent impacts on crop yields, chill hours, pests and diseases, and agricultural vulnerability to climate risks. Finally, we highlight important findings and directions for future research and implementation. The detailed review presented in this paper provides sufficient evidence that the climate in California has changed significantly and is expected to continue changing in the future, and justifies the urgency and importance of enhancing the adaptive capacity of agriculture and reducing vulnerability to climate change. Since agriculture in California is very diverse and each crop responds to climate differently, climate adaptation research should be locally focused along with effective stakeholder engagement and systematic outreach efforts for effective adoption and implementation. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to review the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of chronic esophageal foreign bodies complicated by mediastinitis in children. Methods: A retrospective study of children with a chronic esophageal foreign body and secondary mediastinal complications diagnosed at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego over a 12-month period is reported. Results: Three patients received a diagnosis of an esophageal foreign body, retained from 1 to 12 months, and mediastinitis. Each patient presented primarily with respiratory signs and had been treated previously for alternate diagnoses (ie, asthma, reflux, and upper respiratory tract infection) by emergency or pediatric providers. The diagnosis of a foreign body was made after a chest radiograph was examined. Operative airway evaluation confirmed tracheal narrowing in all patients, and a computed tomographic scan of the chest was performed after removal of the foreign body to confirm mediastinal involvement. After medical and/or surgical treatment, the patients were released from the hospital tolerating soft diets. There were no reports of long-term complications in our series of patients. Conclusions: It is critical to rule out esophageal and airway foreign bodies in pediatric patients with respiratory symptoms that do not respond to medical treatment. Timely recognition of an esophageal foreign body generally allows for removal with minimal morbidity, whereas the incidence of serious complications increases significantly when the diagnosis is delayed. Our series provides support for conservative management of mediastinal complications after removal of chronically retained esophageal foreign bodies in children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Evaluate associations of adolescents' beverage marketing receptivity with sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) perceived harm and intake.Design: School-based cross-sectional health behavior survey.Setting: Seven rural schools in California, 2019-2020.Subjects: 815 student participants in grades 9 or 10.Measures: Participants viewed 6 beverage advertisement images with brand obscured, randomly selected from a larger pool. Ads for telecommunications products were an internal control. Receptivity was a composite of recognizing, liking, and identifying the displayed brand (later categorized: low, moderate, high). Weekly SSB servings were measured with a quantitative food frequency questionnaire and perceived SSB harm as 4 levels ("no harm" to "a lot").Analysis: Outcomes SSB intake (binomial regression) and perceived harm (ordered logistic regression) were modeled according to advertisement receptivity (independent variable), with multiple imputation, school-level clustering, and adjustment for presumed confounders (gender, age, screen time, etc.).Results: In covariable-adjusted models, greater beverage advertisement receptivity independently predicted higher SSB intake (ratio of SSB servings, high vs. low receptivity: 1.48 [95% CI: 1.15, 1.89]) and lower perceived SSB harm (odds ratio, high vs. low receptivity: 0.59 [0.40, 0.88]). Perceived SSB harm was inversely associated with SSB intake.Conclusion: Beverage advertisement receptivity was associated with less perceived SSB harm and greater SSB consumption in this population. Policy strategies, including marketing restrictions or counter-marketing campaigns could potentially reduce SSB consumption and improve health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Before the colonial period, California harboured more language variation than all of Europe, and linguistic and archaeological analyses have led to many hypotheses to explain this diversity 1 . We report genome-wide data from 79 ancient individuals from California and 40 ancient individuals from Northern Mexico dating to 7,400-200 years before present (BP). Our analyses document long-term genetic continuity between people living on the Northern Channel Islands of California and the adjacent Santa Barbara mainland coast from 7,400 years BP to modern Chumash groups represented by individuals who lived around 200 years BP. The distinctive genetic lineages that characterize present-day and ancient people from Northwest Mexico increased in frequency in Southern and Central California by 5,200 years BP, providing evidence for northward migrations that are candidates for spreading Uto-Aztecan languages before the dispersal of maize agriculture from Mexico 2-4 . Individuals from Baja California share more alleles with the earliest individual from Central California in the dataset than with later individuals from Central California, potentially reflecting an earlier linguistic substrate, whose impact on local ancestry was diluted by later migrations from inland regions 1,5 . After 1,600 years BP, ancient individuals from the Channel Islands lived in communities with effective sizes similar to those in pre-agricultural Caribbean and Patagonia, and smaller than those on the California mainland and in sampled regions of Mexico., (© 2023.
