Magmatism in the Quaternary Clear Lake volcanic field (CLVF), with its youngest eruption having only occurred c. 10 ka ago, is commonly invoked as the heat source for the world's largest commercial geothermal reservoir, The Geysers, in northern California. A shallow silicic magma reservoir in the upper-middle crust has been discovered for some time, but the location and mechanism of a potential deep mafic magma reservoir have remained elusive. Here, we present a seismic tomographic model that images the entire crustal column, clearly revealing a multilevel transcrustal magmatic system beneath the Geysers-Clear Lake area. Upwelling melts from the mantle traverse across the crust-mantle boundary and accumulate in the lower crust underneath the southeastern part of Clear Lake, resulting in a hot Moho in between. Mafic melts primarily ascend westward due to the extensional regime in the west and physical barrier effect from the overlying rigid ophiolite fragment, ultimately forming a shallow silicic magma reservoir underlying and heating The Geysers geothermal field. We analyze nearest‐neighbor proximities of earthquakes in California based on the joint distribution (T, R) of rescaled time T and rescaled distance R between pairs of earthquakes (Zaliapin & Ben‐Zion, 2013a, https://doi.org/10.1002/jgrb.50179), using seismic catalogs from several regions and several catalogs for the San Jacinto Fault Zone (SJFZ). The study aims to identify informative modes in nearest‐neighbor diagrams beyond the general background and clustered modes, and to assess seismic catalogs derived by different methods. The results show that earthquake clusters with large and small‐to‐medium mainshocks have approximately diagonal and horizontal (T, R) distributions of the clustered mode, respectively, reflecting different triggering distances of mainshocks. Earthquakes in the creeping section of San Andreas Fault have a distinct "repeaters mode" characterized by very large rescaled times T and very small rescaled distances R, due to nearly identical locations of repeating events. Induced seismicity in the Geysers and Coso geothermal fields follow mostly the background mode, but with larger rescaled times T and smaller rescaled distances R compared to tectonic background seismicity. We also document differences in (T, R) distributions of catalogs constructed by different techniques (analyst‐picks, template‐matching and deep‐learning) for the SJFZ, and detect a mode with very large R and small T in the template‐matching and deep‐learning based catalogs. This mode may reflect dynamic triggering by passing waves and/or catalog artifacts. Nearest‐neighbor diagrams of earthquake proximities in a combined space‐time‐magnitude domain can be used to detect different types of seismicity patterns. Using such diagrams to analyze several earthquake catalogs in California, we examine characteristics of different sections of the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults along with geothermal areas and the entire southern California. The results highlight features of seismicity beyond the well‐known background and clustered modes of earthquakes, including a mode of repeating events in the creeping section of the San Andreas fault and differences between events in regular tectonic areas and geothermal fields. Analyses of different catalogs for the region around the San Jacinto fault also reveal differences related to the different techniques used to construct the catalogs. The results show that nearest‐neighbor diagrams can provide a simple and efficient way to identify different types of seismicity and assess the quality of earthquake catalogs. Simple Summary: Earthquakes are a common occurrence at The Geysers geothermal field in California which, over the years, have led to general land sinking in the area. In our study, we explore the correlation of geothermal data and seismicity and find that the injection rate exhibits a high correlation with the number of earthquakes. Additionally, we rely on satellite imagery which measures the extent of the land subsidence and develop a machine learning model that predicts future land subsidence, finding that it has a relatively low error rate. Moreover, we incorporate geothermal data into this model and find that it performs even better. All in all, this encourages the use of machine learning models in hazard mitigation in order to minimize the potential impacts that land subsidence might bring. The Geysers geothermal field in California is experiencing land subsidence due to the seismic and geothermal activities taking place. This poses a risk not only to the underlying infrastructure but also to the groundwater level which would reduce the water availability for the local community. Because of this, it is crucial to monitor and assess the surface deformation occurring and adjust geothermal operations accordingly. In this study, we examine the correlation between the geothermal injection and production rates as well as the seismic activity in the area, and we show the high correlation between the injection rate and the number of earthquakes. This motivates the use of this data in a machine learning model that would predict future deformation maps. First, we build a model that uses interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) images that have been processed and turned into a deformation time series using LiCSBAS, an open-source InSAR time series package, and evaluate the performance against a linear baseline model. The model includes both convolutional neural network (CNN) layers as well as long short-term memory (LSTM) layers and is able to improve upon the baseline model based on a mean squared error metric. Then, after getting preprocessed, we incorporate the geothermal data by adding them as additional inputs to the model. This new model was able to outperform both the baseline and the previous version of the model that uses only InSAR data, motivating the use of machine learning models as well as geothermal data in assessing and predicting future deformation at The Geysers as part of hazard mitigation models which would then be used as fundamental tools for informed decision making when it comes to adjusting geothermal operations. The generation of strong earthquakes is a long‐debated problem in seismology, and its importance is increased by the possible implications for earthquake forecasting. It is hypothesized that the earthquake generation processes are anticipated by several phenomena occurring within a nucleation region. These phenomena, also defined as preparatory processes, load stress on the fault leading it to reach a critical state. In this paper, we investigate the seismicity preceding 19 moderate (Mw ≥ 3.5) earthquakes at The Geysers, Northern California, aiming to verify the existence of a preparatory phase before their occurrence. We apply an unsupervised K‐means clustering technique to analyze time series of physics‐related features extracted from catalog information and estimated for events occurred before the mainshocks. Specifically, we study the temporal evolution of the b‐value from the Gutenberg‐Richter (b), the magnitude of completeness (Mc), the fractal dimension (Dc), the inter‐event time (dt), and the moment rate (M˙0 ${\dot{M}}_{0}$). Our analysis shows that out of 19 moderate magnitude events considered, a common preparatory phase for 11 events is clearly identified, plus other five events for which we can guess a preparatory phase but with different characteristics from the previous ones. The latter result confirms that even within the same tectonic context different possible activation behaviors may exist. The duration of the preparatory process ranges between about 16 hr and 4 days. We observe that also for the retrieved preparatory process a decrease in b, Mc, and Dc, and an increase of M˙0 ${\dot{M}}_{0}$. Finally, we show a clear correlation between events with a preparation phase and the location of injection's wells, suggesting an important role of fluids in the preparatory process. We introduce a seismic identification method for collapse events using moment tensors (MTs). We start by computing full (six-element) MT solutions for 43 identified collapse events from around the world, and statistically characterizing the population on the MT hypersphere. We then test a large data set of over 1000 full MTs for the western U.S. against the distribution of collapses using a MT-based identification method similarly as used for testing explosions. Known collapses and explosions are readily identified, along with other anomalous events in the Geysers and central California coast. Misidentification rates are determined for various screening angles with optimal misidentification rates between earthquakes and collapses on the order of 3 per cent. The method is demonstrated to be very effective at identifying non-earthquake sources with a 97–98 per cent accuracy. Water injection and Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) technologies have been used to exploit heat resources from geothermal reservoirs. Detecting spatial and temporal changes in reservoir physical properties is important for monitoring reservoir condition changes due to water injection and EGS. Here, we determine high‐resolution models of the temporal changes in the three‐dimensional P wave velocity and attenuation (Vp and Qp) structures between the years 2005 and 2011 in the northwestern part of The Geysers geothermal field, California, using double‐difference seismic velocity and attenuation tomography. The northwest Geysers has a shallow normal temperature reservoir (NTR) underlain by a high temperature reservoir (HTR) that has substantial underutilized heat resources but may be more fully utilized in the future through EGS. In the southeastern part of the northwest Geysers, however, EGS has been successfully but unintentionally applied for at least 50 years because the waters injected into the NTR have been flowing into the HTR. Our models are well resolved in this area and show that the NTR and HTR have different seismic responses (seismicity, Vp, and Qp) to water injection, which can be explained by the injection‐induced differences in fracturing and saturation that are likely related to their geological properties. Our results indicate that the joint analysis of changes in seismicity, velocity, and attenuation is valuable for characterizing changes in reservoir fracturing and saturation conditions. Our results suggest that high‐permeability zones and/or pre‐existing permeable fault zones are important for the success of EGS at The Geysers and potentially other geothermal systems. Multiplet analysis is based on the identification of seismic events with very similar waveforms which are used then to enhance seismological analysis e.g. by precise relocation of sources. In underground fluid injection conditions, it is a tool frequently used for imaging of subsurface fracture system. We identify over 150 repeatedly activated seismic sources within seismicity cluster induced by fluid injection in NW part of The Geysers geothermal field (California). Majority of multiple events (ME) occur along N–S oriented planar structure which we interpret as a fault plane. Remaining ME are distributed along structures interpreted as fractures, forming together a system of interconnected cracks enabling fluid migration. Temporal analysis reveals that during periods of relatively low fluid injection the proportion of ME to non-multiple events is higher than during periods of high injection. Moreover, ME which occur within the fault differ in activity rate and source properties from ME designating the fractures and non-multiple events. In this study we utilize observed differences between ME occurring within various structures and non-multiple events to describe hydraulic conditions within the reservoir. A new time series interferometric synthetic aperture radar method is presented based on a strain model. Traditionally, the interferometric phases are optimized based only on a constant set of statistically homogeneous points throughout the observing period, and thus the decorrelated phase cannot be well recovered and possible incoherent (or coherent) phases are (are not) used to optimize the target phase. In the proposed method, a strain model, representing the geophysical relationship of spatially adjacent points' deformations, is employed to optimize the interferometric phases interferogram‐by‐interferogram. The unwrapped phase time series can be estimated from the wrapped interferograms based on the linear iterative weighted least squares method, which is simple and can effectively suppress the decorrelation noise. Both simulations and analysis of data over The Geysers geothermal field (TG), California are conducted, validating that the proposed method can reduce the decorrelations and simultaneously preserve the deformation signals. The displacement results of TG from 2007–2011 L‐band ascending ALOS‐1 data and 2015–2020 C‐band ascending/descending Sentinel‐1 data reveal that (a) the displacement rate of TG is decreasing from 2007–2011 to 2015–2020, and (b) temporally variable displacement signals in addition to steady displacement can be observed from 2015 to 2020 for both the east‐west and the vertical components. Knowledge of attenuation structure is important for understanding subsurface material properties. We have developed a double-difference seismic attenuation (DDQ) tomography method for high-resolution imaging of 3-D attenuation structure. Our method includes two main elements, the inversion of event-pair differential |${t^*}$| (⁠|$d{t^*}$|⁠) data and 3-D attenuation tomography with the |$d{t^*}$| data. We developed a new spectral ratio method that jointly inverts spectral ratio data from pairs of events observed at a common set of stations to determine the |$d{t^*}$| data. The spectral ratio method cancels out instrument and site response terms, resulting in more accurate |$d{t^*}$| data compared to absolute |${t^*}$| from traditional methods using individual spectra. Synthetic tests show that the inversion of |$d{t^*}$| data using our spectral ratio method is robust to the choice of source model and a moderate degree of noise. We modified an existing velocity tomography code so that it can invert |$d{t^*}$| data for 3-D attenuation structure. We applied the new method to The Geyser geothermal field, California, which has vapour-dominated reservoirs and a long history of water injection. A new Qp model at The Geysers is determined using P -wave data of earthquakes in 2011, using our updated earthquake locations and Vp model. By taking advantage of more accurate |$d{t^*}$| data and the cancellation of model uncertainties along the common paths outside of the source region, the DDQ tomography method achieves higher resolution, especially in the earthquake source regions, compared to the standard tomography method using |${t^*}$| data. This is validated by both the real and synthetic data tests. Our Qp and Vp models show consistent variations in a normal temperature reservoir that can be explained by variations in fracturing, permeability and fluid saturation and/or steam pressure. A prominent low- Qp and Vp zone associated with very active seismicity is imaged within a high temperature reservoir at depths below 2 km. Theoretically, the cross-correlations of earthquakes contain significant information about the EGFs between event-pairs. In this work, we developed an application of virtual seismometers on a very small scale in superficial layers where anthropogenic seismicity occurred. To test this method's capabilities, we applied it to investigate the NW-part of The Geysers (TG) geothermal field. We used 1276 micro-earthquakes, occurred in a cuboid with the horizontal side of ∼1 × ∼2 km and the vertical edge at a depth from 0.9 to 2.2 km, to obtain the high-resolution (100 × 100 m) velocity structure. A group of strict criteria was imposed separately for single event waveform and event pairs to stabilize the tomographic results. After retrieving the inter-event EGF signal and calculating the Rayleigh wave group velocity dispersion curves, we obtained the group velocity maps for each horizontal layer. The tomographic maps as a function of depth indicated a low-velocity anomaly related to existing inactive faults, topography variation of the top of the steam zone, and low-velocity anomalies possibly stimulated by fluid injection. The topography of the top of the steam varies from ∼1.0 km to 1.3 km of maps, and also anomalies connected with fluid migration appear at the depth of injection wells (1.5–1.9 km). Infrared reflectance spectroscopy (IRS), an analytical method for characterizing geologic materials, is becoming more commonly applied to geothermal energy applications. However, few case studies are available in the literature and are restricted to relatively few volcanic/geologic environments. We present an interpretation of reservoir mineralogy using IRS on drill cuttings from an active magmatic-heat-sourced geothermal system hosted in metamorphic rocks known as "The Geysers", located in northern California and operated by Calpine Corp. Wavelength ranges investigated include the Short Wave Infrared (SWIR; 1000–2500 nm) and the Long Wave Infrared (LWIR; 2.5–20 μm). We apply this technique to a 2848 m-deep geothermal production well in the northwest Geysers, inferred to overlie a Holocene intrusion and zone of partial melt as indicated by geophysics. We utilized this non-destructive technique to analyze every drill-cuttings sample (3000+ measurements collected at ∼3.3 m intervals). We identify a zonation in mineralogy that changes from illite + chlorite ± kaolinite ± smectite ± calcite at shallow depths (0–1000 m), to illite + chlorite ± calcite at intermediate depths (1000–2200 m), to actinolite + biotite + chlorite ± tourmaline at greatest depths (2200–2848 m). We find the change at 2200 m is proximal to the inferred transition from the "normal" temperature reservoir (∼240 °C vapor-dominated convective zone) to the high temperature reservoir (up to 400 °C, conduction-dominated). We identify a possible association between 1900 nm H2O absorptions and current steam entry locations. Dynamic earthquake triggering can be used to investigate the responses of faults to stress disturbances. We develop a new method to detect dynamic triggering by estimating high‐frequency energy change before and during teleseismic waves using the HIgh‐Frequency power Integral ratio (HiFi). Our method is able to identify local events independent of earthquake catalog or subjective judgements. The significance in energy change is evaluated by a statistical analysis of the background ratio in a large number of days, which can suppress the influence of noise and variations in the background seismicity and yield a confidence level of dynamic triggering (0–1). We apply the HiFi method to the Geysers Geothermal Field in California, and the results are largely consistent with previous reports from the β statistic. By comparing the results of HiFi and β statistic, we select a confidence level range of 0.918–0.947 as the optimum threshold to identify dynamic triggering in the region. Analysis of 984 induced microearthquakes from The Geysers geothermal reservoir in California reveals that the retrieved moment tensors depend on the frequency band of the inverted waveforms. The observed dependence is more significant for the percentages of the double‐couple, compensated linear vector dipole, and isotropic (ISO) components than for the focal mechanisms. The average root‐mean‐square of the moment tensors obtained in different frequency bands is correlated with spectra of ambient noise. The percentages of double‐couple and ISO components tend to decrease and increase with the upper cutoff frequency (fu), respectively. This suggests that shear rupture radiates energy preferentially in a lower frequency band and tensile rupture in a higher frequency band. Events displaying a strong increase of the ISO with fu are confined within the same depth interval as the injection points. This might be related to the strong thermoelastic effects in the vicinity of injection points that promote opening of small cracks adjacent to the main fractures. The observed dependence is more significant for the components of MT measuring the proportions of seismic energy than for the components determining fault geometry. The component of MT describing shear motion shows a different frequency dependence than that describing tensile motion, suggesting that these two motions occur on the structures with different spatial scales. A subset of seismic events is identified to have a distinct feature of frequency dependence. These events only occur in the layer where the cool water is injected into the hot reservoir and do not migrate downward as the other events. This might be related to the strong thermal effects in the vicinity of injection points that promote the opening of small cracks adjacent to the main fractures. Underground fluid injections result in rock mass fracturing. The associated environmental hazards in a significant part stem from a possibility for linking these fractures. The resultant crevices may allow for an undesired and hazardous fluid migration. We studied the fracture linking problem on data from a part of The Geysers geothermal field in California, USA. We parameterized seismic events by the distance between hypocenter and injecting well, by the angle between the position vector of hypocentre and the maximum horizontal stress direction and by the angle of rotation required to turn the event's double-couple mechanism into the prevailing in this area faults' orientation. To make these parameters comparable, we transformed them to equivalent dimensions. Based on distances between events in the transformed parameter space, we divided the seismic events into clusters. The Geysers Plutonic Complex (GPC) in the California Coast Ranges underlies one of the world's premier geothermal resources. The GPC consists of three major intrusive phases, orthopyroxene-biotite microgranite porphyry, orthopyroxene-biotite granite, and hornblende-biotite-orthopyroxene granodiorite (in sequence of emplacement). These are nearly coeval and compositionally equivalent to lavas of the overlying Cobb Mountain Volcanic Center which includes (from older to younger) rhyolite of Alder Creek, dacite of Cobb Mountain, and dacite of Cobb Valley. Zircon from GPC plutonic and associated volcanic rocks were analyzed at high spatial resolution for their trace element abundances along with oxygen and hafnium isotopic compositions. Pronounced negative Eu anomalies and high incompatible trace element (e.g., Y, Hf, and U) abundances in zircon along with low Ti-in-zircon temperatures reveal that the GPC microgranite porphyry magma was more evolved than GPC granite and granodiorite. Isotopically, GPC microgranite porphyry, granite, and granodiorite zircon crystals closely overlap (δ18O = +4.76 to +9.18; εHf = +1.4 to +10.7), but a subpopulation with elevated δ18O (∼8.05) and lower εHf (∼4.4) is only present in GPC granite and granodiorite. Zircon from coeval volcanic units share this dichotomy, with a dominant population at (δ18O = +4.92 to +9.38; εHf = +3.4 to +11.3) and a generally minor population with elevated δ18O and low εHf, which is particularly prominent in dacite of Cobb Valley. Anticorrelated δ18O and εHf values indicate progressive assimilation of Franciscan Complex basement rocks, but fractional crystallization was decoupled from crustal assimilation. Together with published U-Th-Pb geochronology, these data reveal distinct degrees of crust-mantle interaction and constrain the thermochemical conditions during different stages in the evolution of a composite intrusive body that fed the GPC and contemporaneous volcanoes. A thermal model for such a body emplaced at ∼7 km depth quantitatively matches the GPC zircon age distribution when magma accumulation started at low recharge rates (0.1 km3/ka), intermittently peaked during a brief flare-up (4 km3/ka for 50 ka), and then returned to a low recharge flux (0.1 km3/ka). This model also qualitatively explains the initial presence of small-volume, highly evolved melts forming the microgranite porphyry, followed by massive emplacement of less evolved magmas forming the GPC granite-granodiorite complex. During this second stage, crustal assimilation locally intensified due to prior thermal priming of the country rock. The total injected magma volume into the upper-crustal reservoir between c. 2.1 and 1.1 Ma amounts to ∼300 km3, which is about three to four times the known volume from geothermal well penetration into the GPC. The accumulation of large volumes of silicic magma along the western North American continental margin in the wake of the northward migrating Gorda slab edge thus appears limited to a brief (c. 50 ka) pulse of high magma influx from the mantle that was pre- and post-dated by protracted low-flux magmatism. In this paper, we summarize the results of coupled thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical (THM) modeling in support of the Northwest Geysers EGS Demonstration Project, which aims at enhancing production from a known High Temperature Reservoir (HTR) (280–400 °C) located under the conventional (240 °C) geothermal steam reservoir. The THM modeling was conducted to investigate geomechanical effects of cold-water injection during the stimulation of the EGS, first to predict the extent of the stimulation zone for a given injection schedule, and then to conduct interpretive analyses of the actual stimulation. By using a calibrated THM model based on historic injection and microseismic data at a nearby well, we could reasonably predict the extent of the stimulation zone around the injection well, at least for the first few months of injection. However, observed microseismic evolution and pressure responses over the one-year stimulation-injection revealed more heterogeneous behavior as a result of more complex geology, including a network of shear zones. Therefore, for an interpretive analysis of the one-year stimulation campaign, we included two sets of vertical shear zones within the model; a set of more permeable NW-striking shear zones and a set of less permeable NE-striking shear zones. Our modeling indicates that the microseismic events in this system are related to shear reactivation of pre-existing fractures, triggered by the combined effects of injection-induced cooling around the injection well and rapid (but small) changes in steam pressure as far as a kilometer from the injection well. Overall, the integrated monitoring and modeling of microseismicity, ground surface deformations, reservoir pressure, fluid chemical composition, and seismic tomography depict an EGS system hydraulically bounded by some of the NE-striking low permeability shear zones, with the more permeable NW-striking shear zone providing liquid flow paths for stimulation deep (several kilometers) down into the HTR. The modeling indicates that a significant mechanical degradation (damage) inferred from seismic tomography, and potential changes in fracture porosity inferred from cross-well pressure responses, are related to shear rupture in the stimulation zone driven by both pressure and cooling effects. An Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) Demonstration Project is currently underway in the Northwest Geysers. The project goal is to demonstrate the feasibility of stimulating a deep high-temperature reservoir (HTR) (up to 400 °C, 750 °F). Two previously abandoned wells, Prati State 31 (PS-31) and Prati 32 (P-32), were reopened and deepened to be used as an injection and production doublet to stimulate the HTR. The deepened portions of both wells have conductive temperature gradients of 10 °F/100 ft (182 °C/km), produce connate native fluids and magmatic gas, and the rocks were isotopically unexchanged by meteoric water. The ambient temperature meteoric water injected into these hot dry rocks has evidently created a permeability volume of several cubic kilometers as determined by seismic monitoring. Preliminary isotopic analyses of the injected and produced water indicate that 50–75% of the steam from the created EGS reservoir is injection-derived. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using coupled thermal-hydro-mechanical (THM) modeling, we evaluated new seismic tomography results associated with stimulation injection at an EGS demonstration project at the Northwest Geysers geothermal steam field, California. We studied high resolution seismic tomography images built from data recorded during three time periods: a period of two months prior to injection and during two consecutive one month periods after injection started in October 2011. Our analysis shows that seismic velocity decreases in areas of most intense induced microseismicity and this is also correlated with the spatial distribution of calculated steam pressure changes. A detailed analysis showed that shear wave velocity decreases with pressure in areas where pressure is sufficiently high to cause shear reactivation of pre-existing fractures. The analysis also indicates that cooling in a liquid zone around the injection well contributes to reduced shear wave velocity. A trend of reducing compressional wave velocity with fluid pressure was also found, but at pressures much above the pressure required for shear reactivation. We attribute the reduction in shear wave velocity to softening in the rock mass shear modulus associated with shear dislocations and associated changes in fracture surface properties. Also, as the rock mass become more fractured and more deformable this favors reservoir expansion caused by the pressure increase, and so the fracture porosity increases leading to a decrease in bulk density, a decrease in Young modulus and finally a decrease in V p . A dataset comprised of well-constrained focal mechanisms for 6147 earthquakes recorded in the northwest Geysers geothermal field during the period of 2005-2012 was utilized to conduct a detailed stress study within and below the geothermal reservoir. The high-quality focal mechanisms were organized into grid blocks of varying size using a 3D octree gridding algorithm in which discretization was governed by data density. This method allows for separate inversions of contiguous blocks of seismicity at a relatively fine scale. We obtained the three principal stress orientations for every grid block containing at least 25 events by inverting for the bestfit stress tensor within each grid block. The principal stress orientations were used to determine which of the two nodal planes for each focal mechanism had the highest ratio of resolved shear-to-normal stresses and was thus more likely to be the fault plane. We found a normal/strike-slip faulting regime (SHmax ≈ Sv > Sh min) both within and below the reservoir, consistent with the extensional and strike-slip tectonics in the region surrounding The Geysers. In addition, an average SHmax orientation of N26°E was obtained for the studied crustal volume. These observations suggest that injection and production activities over the past 50+ years do not appear to have significantly affected the local stress field. The presumed fault planes are steeply dipping with northeast-southwest to east-west strike directions suggesting that these are the principal flow directions both within the low matrix permeability graywacke reservoir and in the wholly concealed granitic pluton (locally referred to as the felsite) basement below. The results of a previous study on source mechanisms of small earthquakes at the Geysers geothermal reservoir in northern California are used to investigate an extended crack model for seismic events. The seismic events are characterized by their first-degree moment tensors and interpreted in terms of a model that is a combination of a shear crack and wing cracks. Solutions to both forward and inverse problems are obtained that can be used with either dynamic or static moment tensors. The model contains failure criteria, explains isotropic parts that are commonly observed in induced earthquakes, and produces estimates of crack dimensions and maximum amount of slip. Effects of fluid pressure are easily incorporated into the model as an effective stress. The model is applied to static moment tensors of 20 earthquakes that occurred during a controlled injection project in the northwest Geysers. For earthquakes in the moment magnitude range of 0.9-2.8, the model predicts shear crack radii in the range of 10-150 m, wing crack lengths in the range of 2-25 m, and maximum slips in the range of 0.3-1.1 cm. Only limited results are obtained for the time-dependence of the earthquake process, but the model is consistent with corner frequencies of the isotropic part of the moment tensor being greater than the deviatoric part and waveforms of direct p waves that become more emergent for larger events. Abstract: The performance of Calpine''s Geysers steam field from startup in 1960 to 2008 is described in this paper. Since October 2003, Calpine has received approximately 482L/s of tertiary-treated reclaimed water from the City of Santa Rosa. To accommodate and derive benefit from this water, Calpine has converted 20 wells (ten producers, six shut-in, two observation, and two suspended wells) to high-rate injection service. Additional nine wells were also converted to low-rate injectors that receive 12.6L/s or less. Annual recovery factors (i.e., fieldwide increase in annual steam production divided by annual injection) for the first 5 years of Santa Rosa Geysers Recharge Project (SRGRP) operation have been estimated at 17.6%, 26.1%, 37.1%, 39% and 44.6%, respectively; reasonably close to or slightly higher than the values, predicted prior to SRGRP startup. Using a revised definition that includes the amount of un-boiled water in the reservoir, the annual recovery factors turn out to be 17.6%, 16.1%, 14.6%, 12.4% and 12.2% from year one through year five. Abstract  Capillary pressure curves of six low porosity and low permeability core samples from The Geysers geothermal field were measured using the mercury-intrusion approach to characterize the heterogeneity of rock. One high permeability Berea sandstone core sample was analyzed similarly, for comparison. The maximum pressure of mercury intruded into the rock was about 200 MPa to reach the extremely small pores. Experimental data showed that the capillary pressure curves of The Geysers rock are very different from that of the Berea sandstone. It was found that the frequently used capillary pressure models could not be used to represent the data from The Geysers rock samples. This might be because of the fractures in the rock. To this end, a fractal technique was proposed to model the features of the capillary pressure curves and to characterize the difference in heterogeneity between The Geysers rock and Berea sandstone. The results demonstrated that the rock from The Geysers geothermal field was fractal over a scaling range of about five orders of magnitude. The values of the fractal dimension of all the core samples (six from The Geysers and one Berea sandstone) calculated using the proposed approach were in the range from 2 to 3. The results showed that The Geysers rock with a high density of fractures had a greater fractal dimension than Berea sandstone which is almost without fractures. Abstract: The Geysers–Clear Lake area has a long history of research on its active hydrothermal systems. It is a unique area containing a number of hydrothermal systems which include: the Geysers steam field, one of the largest vapor-dominated geothermal systems yet recognized; the McLaughlin gold deposit, an extremely well preserved hot-spring style gold deposit; and the Sulphur Bank mercury deposit, one of the first locations where geothermal systems were recognized as modern analogues to epithermal deposits. There is also a variety of active hot- and mineral-springs, including Wilbur Springs, or the Sulphur Creek district, which has been considered one of the type localities for connate fluids. The McLaughlin gold–mercury deposit is a fossil hot-spring system dominated by meteoric waters that exchanged with sedimentary rocks of the Great Valley sequence. Mineralization was syntectonic, occurring contemporaneously with fault movement. The fluids circulated in syntectonic dilation zones that resulted in, and maintained, high permeability of the fluid conduits permitting large volumes of fluid flow. The fluids precipitated metals in response to physical and chemical changes associated with boiling. The hydrothermal fluids that formed the McLaughlin deposit have the highest reservoir temperature, salinity and are isotopically the most enriched, of the Coast Range hydrothermal systems. The McLaughlin deposit is considered an end-member “fluid-dominated” hydrothermal system. The Geysers steam field, in its earliest phase was likely similar to the McLaughlin deposit being fluid-dominated and forming, at least on a small scale, a vein system enriched in silver and anomalous in gold, base metals, antimony and mercury. The hydrothermal system evolved into a vapor-dominated system as a result of decreased permeability of the reservoir, decreased recharge and/or increased heat flow. The modern day reservoir is encapsulated in impermeable rocks and is a “vapor-dominated” end-member hydrothermal system. Active hot- and mineral-springs in the Coast Ranges of northern California are intermediate between the fluid- and vapor-dominated end-member systems. The chemical and isotopic compositions of these fluids are the result of thermal processes and are not explained by simple mixing models between connate fluids and meteoric groundwater. Their isotopic and chemical composition is best explained by meteoric-dominated systems with repeated non-equilibrium subsurface vapor loss (evaporation) in a near closed system, with the relative deuterium and 18O enrichment proportional to the reservoir temperature. • Annual curtailment at The Geysers between 2013–2018 ranges from 9 to 47 GW h. • These levels are much lower than curtailment occurring in the late 1990s. • Most curtailment events last a few hours in length. • Power plants with the most curtailment are on a smaller (115 KV) transmission line. • The Western Energy Imbalance Market has reduced curtailment. Geothermal energy has traditionally been viewed as a baseload energy source, but the rapid growth of intermittent renewable energy has led to a need for more flexibility in power generation to avoid mandatory curtailment imposed by grid operators. This study of curtailment at The Geysers provides insights into the magnitude, duration, frequency, temporal and spatial distribution, and potential causes of curtailment events between 2013 and 2018. Annual levels of curtailment range during this period from 9 to 47 GW h, representing 0.15 to 0.81 % of the net generation. Most curtailments occurred at the power plants connected to a lower capacity transmission line and may result from transmission constriction. There is a clear link between negative pricing and economic curtailment, especially when solar production is higher. Economic curtailment events tend to be only a few hours and vary in magnitude up to almost 300 MW, whereas transmission-related curtailment events can be up to several weeks in duration. It is likely that curtailment of geothermal power will be an increasing concern, and could be mitigated by flexible generation strategies and increases in energy storage. The Clear Lake Volcanic Field in northern California is the youngest and northern-most part of a long-lived volcanic system that has produced recent (~10 ka) eruptions. Adjacent to the Clear Lake Volcanic Field is the world's largest energy producing geothermal field, The Geysers. The hottest part of The Geyser's geothermal field is in the northwest where temperatures reach ~400 °C at 3 km depth. Low permeability, high thermal gradients, and low steam saturation prescribed development of an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) in the Northwest Geysers to increase energy producing capacity. Though the Northwest Geysers is known to be the hottest part of the field, geophysical methods have failed to adequately image any inferred heat source. This project aims to image the heat source of the Northwest Geysers using newly collected gravity and magnetotelluric (MT) measurements. Gravity data were jointly modeled with existing magnetic data along a two-dimensional profile aligned with an existing geologic cross-section. The key feature of the potential field model is a low-density, low-susceptibility body at 5 km depth (bmsl) under the EGS. MT data were modeled in three-dimensions to characterize subsurface resistivity structure, where the upper 3 km of the resistivity model agrees well with existing data. Lithologic and steam saturation are estimated from modeled resistivity values using existing geophysical data. Below 3 km depth (bmsl), the resistivity model images a possible young intrusion under the EGS. A possible zone of partial melt (<5%) below 7 km depth (bmsl) in the northwestern part of the field is also imaged which extends northeast towards the main part of the Clear Lake Volcanic Field. • Magnetotellurics successfully images the Northwest Geysers geothermal field. • Steam saturation is directly related to electrical resistivity. • The heat source is 7 km below the northwest part of the geothermal field. • A boundary between the west and east parts of the geothermal field is imaged. • The Geysers Plutonic Complex is imaged as extending northwards below 3 km. Carbonaceous material (CM)-enriched silica is co-located with gold (Au) mineralization at the Au–Hg McLaughlin deposit, Geysers/Clear Lake area, California, U.S.A. The co-location suggests that hydrocarbons (HC) may be involved in mineralization and metal concentration processes, but little is known about the role of HC in the formation of ore deposits. Previous studies noted liquid oil inclusions in samples from the McLaughlin deposit, and proposed that the HC were liquid at the time of ore deposition. Hydrocarbon materials in the McLaughlin deposit occur as solid and liquid. Textural evidence suggests that hydrocarbon-rich and aqueous, silica-rich fluids were present simultaneously, as well as separately in alternating pulses. Synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microscopy of microscopic silica-free carbonaceous material reveals that the CM contains abundant ore metals e.g., Au, Ag, Hg, and Pb. The CM could have become metal-enriched by scavenging metals from other ore fluids, or it could have transported metals when the CM was still liquid, with subsequent in-situ degradation due to hydrothermal heat. Gold concentrations of up to 18 ppm were measured via acid digestion of solid and liquid HC material and subsequent inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) analyses. Hydrocarbon material with liquid to medium viscous properties bearing 10.8 ppm Au provides evidence that Au in liquid HC in the McLaughlin Au-Hg deposit is still mobile and that remobilization and/or transport of metals to the deposit by HC liquids cannot be ruled out. The article focuses on the calculation on the eruption cycles of geysers by Shaul Hurwitz of the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, California, and his team. The team suggests that years with lots of rain or snow resulted in higher than usual pressures in the 200°C-plus underground reservoirs that feed geysers, which shortens geyser eruption cycles. Conversely, after snowmelt in spring, cold water sinks into geyser conduits and lowers their temperature, lengthening eruption intervals. It mentions that this work is based on data recorded between 1998 and 2006 by temperature sensors in geyser outflow channels.

The Geysers, a cluster of natural hot springs located just north of San Francisco, were originally promising sources of energy. Although they are supplying six percent of California's electricity, the steam pressure is dropping. Too many plants, it appears, are using up the available water supply.
