This paper reports on the results of a study of 6,654 unique students on the type of research-related activities (e.g., undergraduate research and internships) they participated in while at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona). Results indicate that the odds of graduating for students who participated in research-related activities were almost twice those of students who did not participate in research-related activities. These results differ from and complement studies on the impact of undergraduate research at liberal arts colleges and research-intensive universities. Study results indicate that non-first-generation students, non-low-income students, and non-underrepresented minority (non-URM) students were more likely to participate in research. Participation in internships with industry and with a professional were most predictive of graduation. Students who participated in multiple research-related activities were also more likely to graduate than those who participated in fewer activities; results indicate research participation is equally beneficial across groups with different demographic characteristics including major, sex, first generation and URM status.

Inclusion of students with autism in general education classrooms is increasing. However, barriers to inclusion, such as limited teacher training and limited knowledge of autism, are often compounded in districts where large percentages of students live in poverty. This study examines general education teachers' perceptions, training needs, and use of evidence-based practices (EBPs) for students with autism in high-poverty schools. Using a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design, survey and focus group data identified the EBPs teachers used most frequently, EBPs they wanted to learn about, barriers to and facilitators of inclusion, and teacher training needs. Results guide practical, feasible suggestions for addressing barriers to inclusion, leveraging facilitators, and supporting teachers who are including students with autism in historically underserved communities. Implications for increasing teacher buy-in and improving ease of training in EBPs are discussed.

Limited health literacy is a barrier to optimal healthcare delivery and outcomes. Current measures requiring patients to self-report limitations are time-consuming and may be considered intrusive by some. This makes widespread classification of patient health literacy challenging. The objective of this study was to develop and validate "literacy profiles" as automated indicators of patients' health literacy to facilitate a non-intrusive, economic and more comprehensive characterization of health literacy among a health care delivery system's membership. To this end, three literacy profiles were generated based on natural language processing (combining computational linguistics and machine learning) using a sample of 283,216 secure messages sent from 6,941 patients to their primary care physicians. All patients were participants in Kaiser Permanente Northern California's DISTANCE Study. Performance of the three literacy profiles were compared against a gold standard of patient self-reported health literacy. Associations were analyzed between each literacy profile and patient demographics, health outcomes and healthcare utilization. T-tests were used for numeric data such as A1C, Charlson comorbidity index and healthcare utilization rates, and chi-square tests for categorical data such as sex, race, poor adherence and severe hypoglycemia. Literacy profiles varied in their test characteristics, with C-statistics ranging from 0.61-0.74. Relations between literacy profiles and health outcomes revealed patterns consistent with previous health literacy research: patients identified via literacy profiles indicative of limited health literacy: (a) were older and more likely of minority status; (b) had poorer medication adherence and glycemic control; and (c) exhibited higher rates of hypoglycemia, comorbidities and healthcare utilization. This represents the first successful attempt to employ natural language processing to estimate health literacy. Literacy profiles can offer an automated and economical way to identify patients with limited health literacy and greater vulnerability to poor health outcomes.

Objective: The growing prevalence of obesity among college students is a major public health issue, as over one-third are overweight or obese. This study used gender-stratified multivariate analyses to examine psychological distress and social contextual factors as key determinants of obesity. Participants: Students of a large public university in Southern California (N = 2392). Methods: In-class survey administered across various departments and general education courses. Results: Among females, distress (OR = 1.02) and sophomores (OR = 1.87) were associated with increased odds of obesity; Greek life (OR = 0.53) was associated with decreased odds of obesity. Among males, distress was not associated with obesity (OR = 1.00); financial strain (OR = 1.16) was associated with increased odds of obesity. Conclusions: There are gendered patterns in obesity risk with social context having potentially protective effects among women. Enhancing psychological wellbeing as well as creating gender- and context-specific interventions may be an effective strategy to address the rising rates of obesity among the college population.

In the first study measuring sexual harassment experiences of academic library employees at a single institution, we conducted a census of 1,610 nonstudent employees at the 10-campus University of California Libraries system. This anonymous online survey measured how sexual harassment was experienced and observed in terms of behaviors, exhibitors, reporting and disclosure, institutional support and betrayal, and recommendations for future actions. Out of 579 respondents, 54% experienced and/or observed sexual harassment at work. Respondents recommended training, workplace culture change, support from leadership, and clear reporting processes in order to address sexual harassment at University of California Libraries.

Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) are an alternative pedagogical approach to the apprenticeship model for high-impact research immersion experiences. A W.M. Keck-funded Research Immersion Program at a Hispanic-serving institution in Southern California proposed to expand the benefits of the CURE model by developing lower- and upper- division CUREs across a variety of STEM (biology, computer science, mathematics, and physics) and associated disciplines (anthropology, kinesiology, sociology, rhetoric, and communications). A subset of these courses moved completely online mid-semester of spring 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of the study presented here is to understand the overall experiences of students and faculty members in the CURE courses in light of the transition to online learning. We present data here that show gains in skills development and understanding research design and stability in science opinions and self-perception in the spring 2020 semester, despite the transition to remote learning. We also report faculty perceptions regarding the challenges, supports, and successes of transitioning and implementing their CUREs in a remote learning environment.

Purpose: To assess Black women's exposure to and appraisal of racism-related stress during the postpartum period and to distinguish its impact on three indicators of postpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) symptoms. Methods: Data from the Black Mothers' Mental Wellness Study (N = 231) and linear regression models estimated the associations between racism-related stress and the PMAD indicators: 3-item Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS-3), 8-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8), and PHQ-15. Results: The majority of participants (80.5%, N = 186) experienced racism a few times a year or more, of which 37.1% (N = 69) were bothered somewhat and 19.3% (N = 36) a lot. Racism-related stress, income, level of education, and history of mental health diagnosis explained greater variance in PMAD symptoms as measured by the PHQ-8 score (R2 = 0.58, p = < 0.001) compared to the EPDS-3 (R2 = 0.46, p = < 0.001) or the PHQ-15 (R2 = 0.14, p = 0.035). Conclusions: Racism is a stressor for Black women living in Los Angeles County, California. Racism-related stress and emotional expression of PMAD symptoms were salient to the postpartum mental health of the Black women in this study. HER2, encoded by the ERBB2 gene, is an important druggable driver of human cancer gaining increasing importance as a therapeutic target in urothelial carcinoma (UC). The genomic underpinnings of HER2 overexpression in ERBB2 nonamplified UC are poorly defined. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated 172 UC tumors from patients treated at the University of California San Francisco, using immunohistochemistry and next-generation sequencing. We found that GATA3 and PPARG copy number gains individually predicted HER2 protein expression independently of ERBB2 amplification. To validate these findings, we interrogated the Memorial Sloan Kettering/The Cancer Genome Atlas (MSK/TCGA) dataset and found that GATA3 and PPARG copy number gains individually predicted ERBB2 mRNA expression independently of ERBB2 amplification. Our findings reveal a potential link between the luminal marker HER2 and the key transcription factors GATA3 and PPARG in UC and highlight the utility of examining GATA3 and PPARG copy number states to identify UC tumors that overexpress HER2 in the absence of ERBB2 amplification. In summary, we found that an increase in copy number of GATA3 and PPARG was independently associated with higher ERBB2 expression in patient samples of UC. This finding provides a potential explanation for HER2 overexpression in UC tumors without ERBB2 amplification and a way to identify these tumors for HER2-targeted therapies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature on the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in school-aged youth (i.e., [less than or equal to] 18 years). Inclusion and exclusion search criteria led to the identification of 96 articles published during a 25-year period. Articles containing international samples (N = 44) and samples from the United States (N = 52) were examined for (a) the nature and prevalence of ACEs, (b) the nature of the samples and populations studied, and (c) the methods used to identify ACEs. Findings are narratively summarized and presented descriptively in tabular form to further assist school professionals in recognizing the diversity of ACEs worldwide and the array of methods used to identify trauma-related events. Prevalence rates vary substantially by the type of ACEs reported and the context or setting in which data were gathered. Yet, almost two thirds of youth experience significant adverse events no matter where they reside across the world, highlighting the need for local ACEs screening and early intervention. Implications for future research include the importance of clarifying ACEs exposure and measures used to quantify such events to allow for future aggregation (e.g., meta-analysis) of findings by country, context, population, or event type.

In 2005, a group of concerned parents who had arrived in the United States as refugees from war-torn Somalia received approval from their local school district to establish the Iftin Charter School (ICS). The K-8 school continues to engender hope and intellectual strength in its students and parents. ICS finds itself uniquely equipped to meet the needs of newcomers to the United States because the community facilitates the transition of immigrants into American society. The school emphasizes English language acquisition and the cultural values of freedom, responsibility, and productivity; the founders are dedicated to the academic and social success of children in the school. If, in fact, ICS is successful in educating a population of low social-economic status English language learners, it is vital to identify the characteristics and practices of this school that have led to its success. In doing so, other schools that have large numbers of Somali students may want to utilize the same practices and strategies with their students. This study examined data from the California Department of Education Dataquest website, including Academic Performance Index, Adequate Yearly Performance, California English Language Development Test (CELDT), and California Standards Test Scores (STAR). Twelve randomly-selected subjects were interviewed using a semi-structured interview process. According to the data from state sources, students at ICS showed increasingly high achievement and few behavioral problems. Although some educators would fault the school for having disproportionately high numbers of a single ethnic community, this school is serving the needs of a refugee population and showing important success.

Nicotine and tobacco product (NTP) and cannabis use are common in adolescence/young adulthood and increase risk for negative psychosocial outcomes. This study investigated associations among adolescent/young adults' initial experiences with NTPs, lifetime frequency of substance use, substance-related problems, and mental health symptoms. Adolescents and young adults enrolled in a study on NTP and cannabis use were asked at what age they initiated the use of NTPs and were assigned to groups based on which product or substance(s) they reported using at the earliest age. Participants who reported use of NTPs (in isolation, without cannabis) first (N = 78, "NTP-only"), simultaneous use of NTPs and cannabis first (e.g., blunt or bowl; N = 25, "Simult-only"), use of both NTPs in isolation and simultaneous use at the same age (N = 48, "NTP + Simult"), and no NTP use (N = 53, "NTP-naïve") were compared on substance use, substance-related problems, and mental health symptoms. Groups differed on lifetime frequency of NTP, simultaneous, and cannabis use, with NTP users reporting more substance use episodes and substance-related problems than the NTP-naïve group. The lifetime frequency of cannabis use did not differ across NTP use groups. NTP use was associated with increased anxiety and depression, with no significant differences between groups. Adolescents and young adults who use nicotine may be at increased risk for greater nicotine use and mental health consequences, but initiating NTP use simultaneously with cannabis may not increase the risk of negative outcomes above and beyond nicotine initiation. Prospective longitudinal research is needed to establish temporal associations between first-used NTP/cannabis products and relevant outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research shows that young people in foster care experience high levels of behavioral health problems that may lead to life obstacles, including legal system involvement (LSI) during the transition to adulthood. However, few longitudinal studies have examined LSI among foster youth from a behavioral health perspective during the transition to adulthood. To understand adolescent behavioral health conditions associated with adult LSI, we used longitudinal survey data of young people in foster care (n = 540) to compare the prevalence of different behavioral health disorders (age 17) between youth who later reported LSI and those who did not (ages 19–21). We also examined associations between adolescent behavioral health disorders and adult LSI, accounting for other covariates. We find that compared to those who did not, youth who reported later LSI in early adulthood had significantly higher rates of four behavioral health disorders at age 17: alcohol use, drug use, conduct disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder. Regression results showed drug use disorder at age 17 to be a particularly strong predictor of later LSI after accounting for other covariates. Many individuals experience various risk factors for LSI, including behavioral health needs. We discuss implications for practice, policy, and research in the child welfare context. This paper draws on data collected from two of the most extensive longitudinal studies of care leavers in the US. The Midwest Study (2003-2011) included 732 youths in foster care in three Midwestern states, and the CalYOUTH Study (2012-present) includes 727 youths in California foster care. The paper has three objectives: (1) describe trends in secondary and postsecondary educational attainment at different ages; (2) summarise findings on predictors of educational attainment; and (3) summarise findings on the impact of extended foster care (EFC) on educational attainment. Results from these two studies show that by age 21, 77-85% of care leavers finish a secondary credential and 31-52% enrol in college. By age 25, about 8% have earned a college degree. Results from multivariate analyses find that youths' educational background and parental status were consistently associated with later educational attainment. Specific aspects of social support also influenced college outcomes. Life demands after enrolling in college (e.g. employment, parenthood) played a more influential role in college degree attainment than did aspects of youths' background. Characteristics of colleges also predicted youths' odds of degree completion. Finally, existing evidence suggests that EFC promotes secondary credential completion and college entry, but not college persistence or degree completion.

This paper analyzes the perspectives of college students toward food insecurity and basic needs campus resources. We draw from interviews with 49 students at one university in California's Inland Empire conducted in 2019. We found that regardless of personal experience with food insecurity, participants were generally reluctant to access resources or disclose their experiences with the campus community. We propose that this food insecurity stigma operates individually, interactionally, and structurally. We also discuss it as a by-product of neoliberal discourses about students "abusing" the system and needing to pull themselves up by the bootstraps. A response from university stakeholders has been to normalize food insecurity and visibilize resource use. While an important strategy to counteract the impact of food insecurity, we argue that normalization has limits in regard to addressing the root causes of food insecurity. Introduction: The California purple sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, relies solely on an innate immune system to combat the many pathogens in the marine environment. One aspect of their molecular defenses is the SpTransformer (SpTrf) gene family that is upregulated in response to immune challenge. The gene sequences are highly variable both within and among animals and likely encode thousands of SpTrf isoforms within the sea urchin population. The native SpTrf proteins bind foreign targets and augment phagocytosis of a marine Vibrio. A recombinant (r)SpTrf-E1-Ec protein produced by E. coli also binds Vibrio but does not augment phagocytosis. Methods: To address the question of whether other rSpTrf isoforms function as opsonins and augment phagocytosis, six rSpTrf proteins were expressed in insect cells. Results: The rSpTrf proteins are larger than expected, are glycosylated, and one dimerized irreversibly. Each rSpTrf protein cross-linked to inert magnetic beads (rSpTrf::beads) results in different levels of surface binding and phagocytosis by phagocytes. Initial analysis shows that significantly more rSpTrf::beads associate with cells compared to control BSA::beads. Binding specificity was verified by pre-incubating the rSpTrf::beads with antibodies, which reduces the association with phagocytes. The different rSpTrf::beads show significant differences for cell surface binding and phagocytosis by phagocytes. Furthermore, there are differences among the three distinct types of phagocytes that show specific vs. constitutive binding and phagocytosis. Conclusion: These findings illustrate the complexity and effectiveness of the sea urchin innate immune system driven by the natSpTrf proteins and the phagocyte cell populations that act to neutralize a wide range of foreign pathogens. Researchers examined the concurrent and predictive validity of a brief (12-item) teacher-rated school readiness screener, the Kindergarten Student Entrance Profile (KSEP), using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis to examine associations between (N = 78) children's social-emotional (SE) and cognitive (COG) readiness with measures of behavioral/emotional risk and early literacy skills throughout kindergarten. Results indicated statistically significant associations between both subscales of the KSEP (SE and COG) with all outcome variables. Findings provide validity evidence in support of the KSEP as an initial gate in the universal screening process to inform educators on the readiness of incoming kindergarteners.

Parents of students with disabilities want the same access to educational opportunities as parents of students without disabilities. This "right" to particular services and learning environments is securely supported by federal regulations and policies in all schools, including charter schools. However, in the work of Fierros and Blomberg (2004) "Restrictions and Race in Special Education Placements in For-Profit and Non-Profit Charter Schools in California," it illuminates the interrelationship of race and placement of minority students with disabilities enrolled in charter schools. In response to the article, I share several remarks that charter schools may be in danger of limiting access to minority students with disabilities, including the following, 1) charter schools are in danger of mirroring traditional public schools in California, 2) inequitable recruiting practices may be evident, 3) there is a lack of support for charter schools concerning special education, and 4) dearth of studies concerning students with disabilities in for-profit and non-profit charter schools is clear. Later, I conclude with recommendations to improve disproportionality of students with disabilities enrolled in charter schools. (Contains 1 footnote.)

The world is urbanizing rapidly, resulting in increasing rates of habitat loss and fragmentation. Protected areas are commonly established to restrict development and conserve native ecological communities. Yet urban protected areas often receive high levels of recreational activity, which can reduce their conservation effectiveness because of disturbance to animals. Recreation has negative consequences for many animal species, but its effects on reptiles are largely unknown. We evaluated the effects of non-consumptive recreation on reptiles within urban protected areas in a fragmented landscape in coastal southern California, USA. We surveyed lizards and snakes along a gradient of recreation intensity and modeled species richness, community composition, and occupancy in relation to human activity along with other variables known to affect reptile distributions. We observed a decline in lizard species richness in association with human activity. Richness of habitat specialists was not related to recreation, but smaller-bodied lizards and lizards with narrower active temperature ranges were less common at sites with high human activity. Human activity was associated with a decline in occupancy of the common side-blotched lizard (Uta stansburiana), no meaningful relationship with occupancy of the orange-throated whiptail (Aspidoscelis hyperythra) and a positive relationship with western fence lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis) occupancy and/or detection probability. Our study demonstrates that increasing rates of recreation activity can reduce the ability of urban protected areas to conserve diverse reptile assemblages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The transition between inpatient and outpatient care for hospitalized people with HIV represents an opportunity for linkage and re‐engagement in care. We evaluated whether attendance at a post‐hospitalization visit ('discharge clinic') within 1–2 weeks of discharge would reduce readmissions and improve retention in care (RIC) among people with HIV in San Diego, California, USA. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of people with HIV hospitalized between June 2020 and November 2021. Our primary outcome was 30‐day readmissions among people with HIV who did or did not attend a discharge clinic visit. Secondary outcomes included the effect of discharge clinic attendance on RIC, along with the impact of attendance at any HIV clinic visit within 30 days of discharge on readmissions and RIC. Results: We evaluated 114 people with HIV, of whom 77 (67.5%) and 90 (78.9%) attended a discharge clinic visit or any HIV clinic visit within 30 days of discharge, respectively. Active substance use disorder (SUD) was associated with failing to attend a discharge clinic visit (odds ratio 0.31; 95% confidence interval 0.13–0.77). We observed no significant differences in readmissions between people with HIV who did or did not attend a discharge clinic visit; however, the former had significantly higher 6‐month RIC (79.2% vs. 35.1%, p < 0.001). People with HIV attending any HIV clinic visit within 30 days of discharge had significantly fewer 30‐day readmissions (8.9% vs. 29.2%, p = 0.02) and better 6‐month RIC (75.6% vs. 25%, p < 0.001) than those who did not attend. Conclusion: Early hospital follow‐up care was associated with a reduction in readmissions among people with HIV. Active SUD was a significant barrier to linkage to outpatient follow‐up and RIC. Common-pool resource theory suggests that the direct participation of local natural resource users in the management of common-pool resources can lead to effective management regimes. Nevertheless, the drivers of participation in common-pool resource management, including policy decision processes, and the effects of participation on stakeholder attitudes and policy preferences are relatively understudied. Here, we combine the social-ecological system (SES) framework with the political science concept of political efficacy to examine both contextual and personal drivers of farmer participation in California, USA’s 2014 Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), as well as the effect of participation on support for policy mechanisms from the SGMA. We surveyed a total of 553 farmers in three counties across the California Central Valley and Central Coast. Overall, we find that < 50% of the farmers surveyed have participated in any SGMA-related events, with attending a meeting being the most common (45%), and testifying before a board being the least common (6%). Participation in any type of SGMA policy event was associated with multiple characteristics of the groundwater SES context, including the resource system (farm size) and actor attributes (farm bureau membership and receiving information about the policy), that likely combine to indicate a higher level of social, financial, and built capital. Higher participation was also associated with higher internal efficacy ratings, i.e., an individual’s self-assessment of their ability to understand and participate in the political process. Higher levels of internal efficacy were also correlated with support for both incentive- and regulatory-based policy mechanisms, as well as the perception that groundwater impacts are occurring now or soon, and exclusive reliance on groundwater. These results demonstrate that political competence and experience with policy processes and programs are not only associated with participation in current policy issues, which is widely recognized in existing research, but are also associated with policy mechanisms, in particular, with potentially more costly regulatory-based mechanisms. Introduction: During the 2020-2021 academic year, the Family Medicine (FM) faculty at David Grant USAF Medical Center (DGMC) incorporated Clinic First principles into the resident educational experience. The faculty hypothesized that these changes could improve symptoms of resident burnout. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted at a single United States Air Force (USAF) FM residency program in California and was approved by the DGMC Institutional Review Board. The validated Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel was used to assess (1) emotional exhaustion, (2) depersonalization, and (3) personal achievement both prior to and following implementation of the Clinic First-inspired curriculum. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to summarize the data. Results: There were 25 eligible FM residents who participated in the study. At baseline, the mean scores on the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel indicated moderate burnout across all 3 domains. There was a statistically significant difference (P = .03) in the mean EE score over time, demonstrating worsening exhaustion. There was no statistically significant difference (P = .37 and P = .08, respectively) in the mean DP or PA score over time. Conclusions: Residents in the DGMC FM residency program were experiencing moderate burnout at the beginning of the 2020-2021 AY. Due to unforeseen challenges, the Clinic First initiative was not realized in its full potential, and the curriculum changes did not definitively protect against burnout. Further study is indicated. Context: Land-use change, including agricultural expansion, is one of the major drivers of biodiversity loss globally. Given the rapid pace of land-use change, data-driven, strategic, and dynamic conservation planning is imperative. Objectives: We present an exemplar application of using existing data to inform conservation planning. Specifically, we developed a systematic approach for identifying areas of conservation concern due to cannabis cultivation in California, USA. Methods: We used three existing datasets: (1) camera trap data from ten projects (n = 1186); (2) the locations of cannabis cultivation sites eradicated by law enforcement (n = 834); and (3) the locations of cultivation licenses (n = 4366). We analyzed this data using multi-species occupancy models to estimate the occupancy and richness of 30 species, and maximum entropy models to estimate the risk of unlicensed and trespass cultivation. We then identified areas of overlap and determined the percent of suitable habitat potentially impacted by cannabis cultivation. Results: Cannabis cultivation was estimated to overlap 39–74% of suitable habitat for special status species. Private land cultivation tended to have a larger influence on generalist species whereas trespass cultivation had the largest potential influence on fisher (Pekania pennanti), a special status species. Conclusions: Our results can be used to prioritize eradication, restoration, and remediation activities; to target mitigation efforts; and to guide the placement of new, licensed cultivation. Our approach demonstrates the utility of aggregating existing biological and socioeconomic data to inform conservation planning and is broadly applicable to other data sources and ecological stressors. The California Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly, Battus philenor hirsuta , and its host plant, the California Pipevine or Dutchman's Pipe, Aristolochia californica Torr., are an important California endemic species pair. While this species pair is an ideal system to study co-evolution, genomic resources for both are lacking. Here, we report a new, chromosome-level assembly of B. philenor hirsuta as part of the California Conservation Genomics Project (CCGP). Following the sequencing and assembly strategy of the CCGP, we used Pacific Biosciences HiFi long reads and Hi-C chromatin proximity sequencing technology to produce a de novo assembled genome. Our genome assembly, the first for any species in the genus, contains 109 scaffolds spanning 443 mega base (Mb) pairs, with a contig N50 of 14.6 Mb, a scaffold N50 of 15.2 Mb, and BUSCO complete score of 98.9%. In combination with the forthcoming A. californica reference genome, the B. philenor hirsuta genome will be a powerful tool for documenting landscape genomic diversity and plant–insect co-evolution in a rapidly changing California landscape. Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between discrimination during childbirth hospitalization and postpartum care utilization among Black birthing people in California, United States. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of data from the Listening to Mothers in California survey, a population‐based survey of individuals with a singleton hospital‐based birth in California in 2016. The primary outcome was number of postpartum care visits. The primary exposures were racial, language, and insurance discrimination. A multiple linear regression model was used to estimate associations between discrimination and postpartum care use, adjusting for sociodemographic covariates. Results: Black birthing people in the sample had an average of two postpartum visits. Almost 15% of the sample reported one or more forms of discrimination during hospital‐based childbirth. In adjusted models, racial discrimination (β = 0.09, 95% CI = 0.04–0.14, p < 0.01) and language discrimination (β = 1.03, 95% CI = 0.98–1.07, p < 0.01) were associated with increased postpartum visits, while insurance discrimination was linked to decreased postpartum visits (β = −0.96, 95% CI = −1.04 to −0.89, p < 0.01). Conclusion: Among Black birthing people in California, the drivers of postpartum care utilization after childbirth are complex. There are multiple negative drivers (e.g., experiencing racial and language discrimination and unmet needs), barriers (e.g., insurance discrimination), and positive drivers (e.g., clinician type and education) that affect postpartum care utilization among Black birthing people. Long-lasting, supportive relationships (what we call "enduring relationships") are important for youths' transition to adulthood, but these relationships are often ruptured for young people in foster care. We investigate how common enduring relationships are among youth making the transition out of care and whether having an enduring relationship improves their outcomes in early adulthood. Our sample includes 608 youths in California foster care (n = 608) participating in the longitudinal CalYOUTH Study. We find that 48 percent of youth have an enduring relationship. Rates are particularly low for Black and Native American/Alaskan Native youth. Most enduring relationships have characteristics of strong ties—most are with family members and peers who provide multiple types of social support. Having an enduring relationship is found to have real, material consequences, reducing risks of food insecurity, economic hardships, and homelessness. Background: Inclusive STEM (traditionally known to stand for "Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math") high schools are emerging across the country as a mechanism for improving STEM education and getting more and diverse students into STEM majors and careers. However, there is no consensus on what these schools are or should be, making it difficult to both evaluate their effectiveness and scale successful models. We addressed this problem by working with inclusive STEM high school leaders and stakeholders to articulate and understand their intended school models. This "bottom-up" approach is in contrast with other studies that have taken a "top-down," literature-based approach to defining STEM schools. Results: Through this process, we identified 76 critical components of STEM schools and derived a theoretical framework of eight elements that represent the common goals and strategies employed by inclusive STEM high schools across the country: Personalization of Learning; Problem-Based Learning; Rigorous Learning; Career, Technology, and Life Skills; School Community and Belonging; External Community; Staff Foundations; and External Factors. This framework offers a clear picture of what exactly inclusive STEM schools are and common language for both researchers and practitioners. Interestingly, STEM disciplinary content did not emerge as a defining component across school models. Conclusions: Findings suggest that STEM school leaders and stakeholders view their STEM school identity as rooted in pedagogy, transferrable skills, school culture, and rigorous instruction across all subjects, including, but not restricted to, STEM. This raises questions about the goals of inclusive STEM high schools and the STEM discipline outcomes that we should reasonably expect to see from STEM schools.

Research Findings: In this study we analyze how parent and teacher ratings of young Latino children's social competencies in rural California are associated with children's oral language development. We find (a) that there is considerable incongruence between parent and teacher ratings of child social competence, (b) that both parent and teacher ratings account for meaningful variation in children's oral language development, and (c) that incongruence between parent and teacher ratings is associated with oral language above and beyond the effects of parent and teacher ratings alone. Practice or Policy: Young Latino children's social competencies contribute to their oral language development. These competencies represent an important, though to date underutilized, asset for building stronger academic/language functioning. Part of the paradoxical development of Latino children (i.e., strong social though weak academic/language competence) could be attributable to cultural differences that underlie teacher and parent perceptions of social competence. Teachers of young Latino children should (a) be aware of the cultural nature of social competence and (b) explore culturally responsive ways of interacting in classrooms to build stronger oral language functioning.
