A recent study conducted by researchers at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, examined the impact of early versus late catheter removal on the outcome of trial without catheter (TWOC) in patients with acute urine retention (AUR) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) using silodosin therapy. The study found that patients who were catheterized after AUR due to BPH and treated with silodosin were able to spontaneously void following catheter removal, regardless of the duration of catheterization. However, complications such as urinary leakage, urinary tract infection, hematuria, and catheter blockage were more common in patients who received prolonged catheterization. This research suggests that silodosin therapy can be effective in helping patients with AUR due to BPH void without a catheter, but prolonged catheterization may increase the risk of complications.
