The article provides information on the Broken Hill mining field in New South Wales. The rich silver-lead-zinc deposit at Broken Hill has fascinated miners, geologists and mineralogists for more than 120 years. It is the largest base-metal deposit in the world, with operations now spanning three centuries. The geological history of the Broken Hill deposit is complex. It is not a single mass but a series of six essentially stratiform sulfide-ore lenses, each with a different chemical and hence mineralogical fingerprint.
