Abstract

The article discusses fee shifting and the impact of pro bono counsel on court awards of party-and-party costs in civil litigation matters in British Columbia as of January 2013. Access to justice, indemnification, and contingency arrangements are addressed. Several legal cases are examined, including the Ontario Court of Appeal case Fong v. Chang which deals with legal costs and self-represented litigants.
