Background: Speech and language therapists (SLTs) play an important role in assessing and rehabilitating communication disorders in people with dementia, but there is evidence to suggest that they do not receive appropriate training to provide management and support during their training. Aim: To investigate the level of awareness and knowledge that practising SLTs from Brazil have about dementia and their role in the care of dementia through an online survey. Methods & Procedures: An online survey tool was developed to collect information from practising Brazilian SLTs regarding their knowledge about dementia, awareness about their role in the care of people with dementia, and opinions on how SLTs may be better prepared to work in the dementia field. The survey was disseminated via social media, websites, and e‐mail lists of researchers and stakeholders. Outcomes & Results: A total of 227 SLTs completed the survey. Participants showed good knowledge of dementia in general, while their answers were less accurate on primary progressive aphasia. Regarding the awareness by SLTs of their role in the care of people with dementia, most agreed or strongly agreed that SLTs could help people in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of dementia (> 80%). However, fewer participants agreed or strongly agreed that they felt confident in contributing to the treatment and diagnosis process of dementia (about 50%). To improve the training of SLTs in Brazil, most participants believed that it would be necessary to improve the teaching of dementia at the undergraduate speech and language therapy curriculum level and to develop recommendations or guidelines about speech and language therapy practice in dementia. Conclusions & Implications: The results of this survey point to a need for improvement in the knowledge and confidence of Brazilian SLTs about dementia. To reach this goal, targeted training courses and applied practice opportunities should be embedded within university curricula and training programmes. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject: Many studies confirm the importance of speech and language therapy in the non‐pharmacological treatment of people with dementia. However, other evidence suggests to a possible lack of training for Brazilian SLTs, especially in the curriculum of undergraduate courses. What this paper adds to existing knowledge: This study reveals that Brazilian SLTs have substantial knowledge of dementia and recognize the significance of their role in treating people with dementia. However, a minority expressed confidence in their ability to assess and treat people with dementia. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work?: The findings of this research demonstrate that Brazilian SLTs have good knowledge of dementia and endorse their professional role in dementia care; however, they lack confidence in their own skills and expertise in diagnostic assessment and treatment of dementia. Purpose: The WHO emphasises that rehabilitation services must be integrated into primary healthcare as an inherent part of universal health coverage. However, there is limited research on the integration of rehabilitation services in primary healthcare in low- and middle-income countries. The purpose of this paper is to identify and describe the literature on service guidelines, models, and protocols that support the integration of rehabilitation services in primary healthcare in the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). Methods: A scoping review guided by Arksey and O'Malley's framework was conducted. Structured database and website searches identified published and unpublished records from 2010, which were subjected to eligibility criteria. Mendeley, JBI SUMARI, and Microsoft Excel were used to extract and synthesise the data. Results: The search strategy identified 542 records. Thirty-two records met the inclusion criteria. Shared care and community-based rehabilitation were the most reported practice models, and the implementation of the models, guidelines, and protocols was mostly described in mental health services. Conclusion: This review discusses BRICS countries' rehabilitation service guidelines, models, and protocols for primary healthcare integration and implementation challenges. Rehabilitation professionals should rethink, realign, and apply existing models because of the lack of primary healthcare integration directives. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: The integration of rehabilitation services in low-resourced and remote settings can be improved by involving community health workers and community rehabilitation workers in transdisciplinary teams. Peer support workers and community health workers can improve rehabilitation outcomes, particularly through shared care models that emphasize peer-to-peer learning, mentoring, and coaching. Self-management interventions can have a positive impact on functional outcomes. to evaluate characteristics of aphasia rehabilitation, its barriers, and differences according to educational level (undergraduate level in speech-language pathology (SLP) or otherwise, professional qualification, Master's or Doctoral/Post-doctoral degree) and region of Brazil. A cross-sectional, quantitative, exploratory, analytical survey study was conducted. Speech therapists who work with people with aphasia (PwA) were invited to answer the online survey. Participants were recruited through the Brazilian Society of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and by snowball sampling. Of the 103 participants, 55 (53%) were from the Southeast region, 55 (53.4%) held an SLP undergraduate or professional specialization degree only, 21 (20.4%) a Master's, and 27 (26.2%) a Doctoral or Post-doctoral degrees. Standardized instruments for assessing aphasia were used by 51 (49.5%) respondents. Functional therapy was used in 99% of cases. Professionals holding Doctoral or Post-doctoral degrees had a greater level of engagement in conferences (p=0.014) and in professional associations/societies than therapists qualified with lower education degrees (p<0.001). The high-educated group worked more with PWA during the year (p=0.002) and with more public health system users (p=0.002). These professionals also made greater use of telerehabilitation (p<0.001), group therapy approaches (p=0.015), and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (p=0.009). Additionally, they charged higher private consultation fees (p<0.001) and were predominantly from the Southeast region (p=0.047). Professionals from the South region delivered more outpatient care to PwA (p=0.007). All participants from the Southeast region used a multimodal therapy approach (p=0.021). For chronic PwA, professionals holding a Doctoral or Postdoctoral degree (p=0.035), and those from the Southeast region (p=0.049) provided therapy for longer. Results revealed differences in type of therapeutic approach, assessment instruments and duration of aphasia treatment, according to region and postgraduate level of education. Future studies should investigate the causes of these disparities, along with barriers or approach preferences that may stem from undergraduate training and impact aphasia treatment approaches in Brazil. Introduction: Language production is a finely regulated process, with many aspects which still elude comprehension. From a motor perspective, speech involves over a hundred different muscles functioning in coordination. As science and technology evolve, new approaches are used to study speech production and treat its disorders, and there is growing interest in the use of non-invasive modulation by means of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Methods: Here we analyzed data obtained from Scopus (Elsevier) using VOSViewer to provide an overview of bibliographic mapping of citation, co-occurrence of keywords, co-citation and bibliographic coupling of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) use in speech research. Results: In total, 253 documents were found, being 55% from only three countries (USA, Germany and Italy), with emerging economies such as Brazil and China becoming relevant in this topic recently. Most documents were published in this last decade, with 2022 being the most productive yet, showing brain stimulation has untapped potential for the speech research field. Discussion: Keyword analysis indicates a move away from basic research on the motor control in healthy speech, toward clinical applications such as stuttering and aphasia treatment. We also observe a recent trend in cerebellar modulation for clinical treatment. Finally, we discuss how NIBS have established over the years and gained prominence as tools in speech therapy and research, and highlight potential methodological possibilities for future research. The complex epidemiological profile of Brazil, the aging population and the proportion of individuals with disabilities have led to a substantial increase in the demand for rehabilitation. The spatiotemporal distribution of the offer of physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy in the Brazilian public healthcare system from 2007 to 2019 was analyzed for the five macro-regions of the country. Data from the National Register of Health Establishments and census estimates from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics were used. Indicators of the offer of professionals in these fields services and relative changes in the offer were calculated. The spatial distribution of the relative change in the offer was also determined. A regression model with inflection points was adopted for the analysis of the temporal trend. A growing temporal trend was found in the offer of the three professionals in Brazil as a whole and in all regions of the country, but with a slowdown in growth. Differences were observed in the offer among the regions of the country, revealing healthcare inequality that needs to be overcome. Purpose: Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are professionals marked by occupational gender segregation, with speech-language pathology jobs being dominated by women worldwide. In the United States, male participation in leadership and prominent positions within the profession has been gradually increasing, but the proportion of men compared to women is still very low. This study aimed to verify the prevalence of Brazilian men who are SLPs, assess the participation of male SLPs in leadership positions within the profession, and compare this gender distribution with that of other countries. Method: In this retrospective, descriptive cross-sectional study, we considered information contained in public databases and information obtained through utilizing the Brazilian Access to Information Law. Male representation in Brazil was assessed considering the distribution of active male speech-language pathology professionals, participation in collegiates of the Brazilian federal and regional speech-language pathology councils, participation in the board of the Brazilian Society of Speech-Language Pathology, participation in editorial boards, authorship in Brazilian journals, and prevalence in public health care. Besides the data gathered in Brazil, for comparison purposes, data on scientific representation in the United States and that of speech-language pathology societies in 40 countries were collected. Results: Males represent 4.8% of the Brazilian active speech-language pathology professionals. Representation in public health care was low (3.0%), which reveals a significant gender disparity. Male participation in leadership positions averaged at around 14%-25%, which can illustrate a potential growth in the field of male professionals. Conclusions: The gender disparity seen globally remains present in Brazilian SLPs. The findings of this study can benefit the profession by recognizing this inequality and stimulating the search for solutions that favor gender equality considering Brazilian sociocultural features. To verify the factors associated with the need of tube feeding (TF) during patients post-ischemic stroke hospitalization. This is a retrospective study with 70 adult post-ischemic hemispheric stroke adult patients hospitalized in the Neurology department at a tertiary public hospital in Santa Catarina, Brazil. We investigated associations between the need of a feeding tube during hospitalization and the variables age, gender, admission and discharge NIHSS and FOIS, length of hospital stay in days, presence of thrombolytic therapy, extensive stroke, hemisphere affected, prior stroke, pneumonia during hospitalization, presence of signs of laryngeal penetration and laryngotracheal aspiration and dysphagia in the first and last swallowing clinical evaluation. A total of 33 participants used tube feeding. There was a significant relationship among tube feeding and the following parameters: NIHSS (p value.001), FOIS (p value.001), extensive stroke (p value.034), left hemisphere involvement (p value.035), pneumonia during hospitalization (p value.001), length of hospital stay in days (p value.001), signs of laryngotracheal penetration/aspiration (p value.001) and dysphagia in speech-language assessment (p value.001). Tube feeding during patients hospitalization after ischemic hemispheric stroke was predicted by the severity of stroke and signs of airway permeation. Swallowing difficulty is one of the most common post-stroke consequences. There are few studies on the characterization of post-stroke patients with tube feeding. Background: Effective speech production involves a complex system that not only requires planning and motor execution in different speech subsystems, but also depends on the proper functioning of the auditory system. In cases of dysarthria, auditory electrophysiological assessment can be important, since it can help diagnose the underlying neurological disease. The objective of this pilot study was to assess the effectiveness of the frequency-following response (FFR) in monitoring the progress of speech therapy in cases of dysarthria due to neurodegenerative disease. It also sought to gauge changes in the patients' quality of life using a self-report questionnaire. Case report: Two individuals with dysarthria were assessed by the FFR and by the questionnaire "Living with Dysarthria" while undergoing a speech therapy rehabilitation program aimed at improving their speech. It was found that the speech therapy brought benefits in terms of quality of life, in line with the FFR responses. Conclusions: The FFR may be a promising approach to monitoring changes in the central auditory nervous system during speech therapy for dysarthria due to acquired neurodegenerative disease. In 2002, the Brazilian deaf communities' struggles against academic failure and deaf student dropout won a linguistic policy: the LIBRAS Federal Law. This official law, regulated by Decree N.5626 in 2005, recognises LIBRAS as a national language and requires inclusive educational practices in a bilingual model in order to promote meaningful learning, interaction and participation of deaf students in all educational domains. Nearly two decades later, the Law N. 14.191/2021 has been published, establishing bilingual education for deaf people as a teaching modality on Guidelines and Bases of National Education. Despite these political movements towards an effective inclusive education, the daily reality in Brazilian schools shows there are still challenges to adopting an additive bilingual and cultural approach using LIBRAS. There are also challenges in developing fluid communication between deaf and hearing class members that would enable inclusion, collaboration and understanding of cultural differences in the educational domain. Combining ethnographic perspectives and theoretical discussion of inclusive-bilingual education in Brazil, this article describes interactions in an intercultural dialogue between deaf trainee teachers, hearing children and their hearing teacher in a second-language learning context (LIBRAS). Focussing on the ways in which relationships and communication processes are re-constructed by the participants, this study reveals different ways of representing deaf people and the learning of LIBRAS, highlighting a deterritorialised perspective from the children which moves freely between the ideological boundaries and linguistic and cultural limitations of the deaf and hearing adults. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of the Therapy Program for Management of Chronic Cough (TMCC) in laryngeal sensations and symptoms related to the cough in individuals with chronic refractory cough (CRC). Method: This research is a randomized double-blind clinical trial (Register Number: RBR-4m6x29). Eleven participants were allocated to two groups by parallel randomization: The Experimental Group--consisting of six individuals who underwent the TMCC; and the Control Group--consisting of five individuals who underwent the Comprehensive Vocal Rehabilitation Program (CVRP). Two primary outcomes were analyzed: self-perception of laryngeal sensations (Newcastle Laryngeal Hypersensitivity Questionnaire [LHQ-Br]) and self-perception of symptoms of upper airway-related cough (Cough Severity Index [CSI-Br]). The two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to compare the evaluation moments and intervention groups. For multiple comparisons, the Tukey test with Bonferroni correction was used. To evaluate the effect size, eta partial square was used. Results: There was no difference between groups for any outcomes analyzed. There was a statistically significant difference with a large effect size for the moment factor in all outcomes. A statistically significant difference was observed with a large effect size for the interaction effect between group and moment for LHQ-Br total and CSI-Br psychological and functional. Conclusions: The TMCC and CVRP were effective for the rehabilitation of CRC, considering the viewpoint of the subject. The TMCC improved laryngeal sensations and psychological and functional symptoms, while CVRP was relevant to improve psychological and functional symptoms in individuals with CRC. Objective: To investigate the speech outcomes in individuals with cleft lip and palate (CLP) from the Amazon region and determine their correlation with sociodemographic factors. Design: Cross-sectional, prospective, single-blind study. Setting: Tertiary care institute in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. Patients: Four hundred twenty individuals with CLP, aged 4 to 57 years. Main Outcome Measures: The samples were judged by 3 speech pathologists experienced in the speech assessment of individuals with CLP. Hypernasality was scored using a 4-point scale, being 1 = absent, 2 = mild, 3 = moderate, and 4 = severe, and the active speech symptoms were classified as absent or present. The final score for each speech symptom was reached by consensus among the 3 examiners Descriptive analysis of sociodemographic data included origin, socioeconomic status, type of cleft, surgical technique employed, the age they underwent primary and secondary palatoplasty, and palatal fistula. Results: Absence of hypernasality was observed in 41% of the individuals, 18% had mild, 28% moderate, and 13% severe hypernasality. Active speech symptoms were observed in 57% of the individuals. Significant correlations were found between speech outcomes and the variables such as origin, socioeconomic status, age at primary and secondary palatoplasty, and presence of fistula. Conclusions: Most individuals with repaired CLP from the Amazon region presented speech disorders, characterized by hypernasality and active errors. Patients living outside the state capital, of low socioeconomic level, underwent palatoplasty late and with presence of palatal fistula tended to have the worst speech outcomes. The goal of the present study was to investigate the relationship between speech production (SP) and speech perception in children with Speech Sound Disorder (SSD) from both typical speech production (TSP) and child's own atypical speech production (ASP). Ten children with SSD were evaluated by a speech production task (naming test) and two speech perception tasks (phonological contrast identification) using the PERCEFAL instrument. In the identification task, the acoustic stimulus, from typical and child's own atypical speech productions, was presented to each child, and they needed to choose the corresponding stimulus between two pictures displayed on the computer screen. The percentages of errors on speech production (SP) task, on the identification task from TSP and ASP were calculated for each child. ANOVA showed a significant difference between speech production and speech perception. Post hoc analysis demonstrated a greater mean of errors in the ASP compared to the mean of errors in the TSP and SP performances. Only SP and ASP performances presented a significant correlation (r = 0.65). Errors involving manner and manner+place were most recurring in SP. TSP seems to precede SP; that is, children with SSD perceive more speech from typical production than they are able to produce. The significant correlation between ASP and SP suggests that the evaluation of these skills accesses the children's equivalent underlying phonological representation. A more accurate production, such as typical production, may have cues that help children with SSD to identify phonological contrasts, even if their underlying representations are overly broad or not established. Young children with cleft palate with or without cleft lip (CL/P) are at risk for early vocabulary and speech sound production delays. Early intervention studies have shown some promising findings to promote early speech and vocabulary development following palate repair; however, we know little about how these interventions can be used in other international contexts. This study adapted an early speech and language intervention developed in the US, Enhanced Milieu Teaching with Phonological Emphasis (EMT+PE), to the Brazilian context at the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies at the University of São Paulo-Bauru. The purpose of this study was to compare the speech and language performance of 24 toddlers with CL/P randomized into an EMT+PE intervention group and a business-as–usual (BAU) comparison group over three time points: prior to, immediately following, and three months after intervention. Results immediately following intervention indicate gains in multiple measures of language. Three months following intervention, participants showed gains in both language and speech measures. Higher education in Brazil has been facing numerous changes, as a result of social needs. These, in turn, are extremely important in higher education in health, especially since these professionals perform their activities in a complex field. It is important that there is a restructuring in higher education in health that includes an academic-scientific training, where the professional works on the integrality of the individual, ethics, humanitarian profile, reflexivity and health management. In this perspective, Higher Education institutions have been seeking changes in the political-pedagogical project in a way that encompasses such characteristics recommended by the National Curriculum Guidelines. Therefore, it is essential that they propose a teaching-learning process guided by the engagement of subjects and by stimulating critical-reflective thinking, which constitutes a mediating point of view between teaching and action. However, the objective of this study is to analyze the teaching plans of a Speech Therapy course at a private higher education institution and the main methodologies used in the period from 2016 to 2020. The teaching plans of this course, which is composed of 54 subjects, were analyzed., being analyzed only 52 plans. The teaching plans were made available by the course coordination. The following variables were analyzed: name and type of discipline; year; most used resources and equipment; applied methodologies, such as the use of lectures, dialogued lectures, active methodologies; laboratory use; teacher's title and gender; weekly working hours; total number of classes in the semester and assessment method. Finally, statistical tests were applied in order to compare the use of methodologies according to the types of disciplines: general and specific. However, it was found that 74.5% of the subjects were specific, most subjects were taught by women (96.07%), the minimum number of subjects was 30 semester hours and a maximum of 90 semester hours, the minimum amount of classes taught in the semester was 13 classes and the maximum of 20 classes, most teachers had a master's degree (76.47%). The use of active methodologies showed a high prevalence and did not vary over the years, from 2016 to 2020 (p value=0.659). The dialogued class had 100% adherence by teachers both in general and specific subjects. The specific subjects showed more use of playful methodology (p-value = <0.001), clinical cases (p-value = <0.001), theoretical reflection (p-value = 0.009) and portfolio (p-value = 0.055). On the other hand, general subjects had more use of lectures (pvalue = 0.055). It is concluded that when characterizing the main methodologies used in the teaching plans of the Speech-Language Pathology course of a private higher education institution, teaching strategies were noted, where the teachers used different methods, the most common in training: dialogued class, theoretical reflection, clinical case, seminar, playful methodologies and portfolio. Given the changes in the digestive tract post-bariatric surgery, adapting to a new pattern of eating behavior becomes crucial, with special attention to the specifics of chewing mechanics. This study aimed to investigate the association between self-perception of chewing, chewing behavior, and the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms in preoperative patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Sixty adult candidates for bariatric surgery at a public hospital in Belém (Brazil) were analyzed. Participants predominantly exhibited unilateral chewing patterns (91.6%), a fast chewing rhythm (73.3%), a large food bolus (80%), liquid intake during meals (36.7%), and 41.7% reported that chewing could cause some issue. Significant associations were found between the perception of causing problems and chewing scarcity ( p = 0.006), diarrhea ( p = 0.004), absence of slow chewing ( p = 0.048), and frequent cutting of food with front teeth ( p = 0.034). These findings reveal a relationship between the perception of chewing problems and chewing scarcity, presence of diarrhea, and fast chewing.

To estimate the prevalence of access and use of speech-language therapy services and identify the variables associated with access. Cross- sectional population-based study. The sample consisted of adult individuals living in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil. The data were collected using an instrument constructed with domains of national research questionnaires, with a module on speech-language therapy. The outcome was the access to a speech-language therapist. Poisson regression with robust variance was used to calculate Prevalence Ratios with 95% confidence intervals. A total of 214 people participated in the study, of which 67.3% (n = 144) were female. The mean age was 54.28 (SD±18.83) years. Fifty-six (26.2%) people mentioned the need for speech -language therapy consultation. All 56 subjects were able to perform speech-language therapy, of which 69.4% (n = 39) in private practice and 19.6% (n=11) used healthcare insurance plans at partnering providers. In the final model, the highest prevalence of access was associated with female (PR=1.09,95%CI1.01-1.18) and had some deficiency (PR = 1.09,95%CI1.03-1.17). Access to a speech-language therapist is more frequent in private services. It is observed that women and the disabled individuals have a higher prevalence of access to speech-language therapist. Aims: To evaluate the effects of a 16-week program based on Goals-Activity-Motor Enrichment (GAME) principles on infants with congenital Zika virus syndrome (CZS)'s mother report of functional goal achievement, motor and cognitive abilities, home enrichment, and parents' perceptions regarding the service provided. Methods: Quasi-experimental study with infants (n = 32) with CZS and their mothers. Twenty-two infants composed the GAME-based group and 10 were included in the control group. The primary outcome measure was the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure. Secondary outcome measures were the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, the Affordances in the Home Environment for Motor Development-Infant Scale, and the Measure of Processes of Care. All measures were performed by blinded assessors. Results: Mothers of infants in the GAME-based group reported significant improvements in their infants' performance on functional priorities (p = 0.0001) and satisfaction with their infants' performance (p = 0.0001), the extent in which services promoted enabling and partnership (p = 0.021), provided general information (p = 0.039), specific information (p = 0.0001), and an enriched home environment (p = 0.0001). Infants in both groups did not improve in motor or cognitive abilities. Conclusions: A family-centered early intervention program based on GAME principles improved mothers' individualized outcomes and enriched infants with CZS's environment. This article describes the functional profile of children aged 5 to 9 years with Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome (CZS) in the metropolitan region of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. The study was conducted with 10 children who were diagnosed with CZS and had physical, visual, and cognitive impairments. The children had microcephaly, used antiepileptic medications, and received physiotherapy and speech therapy treatment. Introduction: Specialists began to study the consequences of the new scenarios imposed by COVID-19. The teacher's routine requires a great vocal effort, during the pandemic, they are undergoing drastic changes in their work activities. Objectives: To analyze the vocal self-perception of Brazilian teachers, communicative needs, vocal signs and symptoms and voicerelated lifestyle before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to develop guidance materials for these teachers. Methods: An online questionnaire was distributed, 1253 teachers from Brazil participated, aged between 18 and 78 years, working at different levels of education. Of the participants, 1081 opted to receive informative materials about voice and communication. Descriptive and inferential analyzes of the data were performed. Results: On comparing the pre-pandemic period with the current one, participants indicated improvement in voice. Even so, they maintained symptoms such as dry throat, straining when teaching remotely, hoarseness after classes, difficulties with using a microphone, among others. They indicated stress, general fatigue, the impact of the pandemic on mental health and the overlap of many domestic tasks with professional tasks. Conclusion: Although teachers have, in general, noticed an improvement in their voices during the pandemic, some of them maintained vocal symptoms and many complaints. Several factors indicated by them can be considered by speech therapists in followup programs with the aim of improving performance and comfort during remote and hybrid classes, with a positive impact not only on voice and communication, but also on their quality of life. Aims: Identifying effective methods for stimulating language and communication of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is fundamental to the effective use of available resources to support these children. This pilot study was designed to explore the potential benefits of a program of stimulation of executive functions (SEF) on the functional aspects of language and communication through the assessment of the functional communicative profile and social-cognitive performance. Methods: Twenty children, aged 5-12 years, with a diagnosis of ASD participated in the study. Two stimulation programs were offered over a 10- to 12-week period as part of the regular services offered to these children through a University's speech and language therapy outpatient clinic in São Paulo, Brazil. Children either received SEF intervention in their home implemented by their parent/s, with close monitoring by the speech-language pathologist (SLP) (group 1), or they received SEF by the SLP during regular speech-language therapy individual sessions (group 2). Results: The findings suggested that there were differences between the children's pre- and posttest performance. Significantly different performances were observed in the areas of occupation of communication space, proportion of communicative interactivity, and social-cognitive performance. This paper reports a qualitative study on the contribution of a Program of Education through Work (PET) in Healthcare, based at a Brazilian State University, to interprofessional education. Data were collected from ten undergraduate students of Nursing, Medicine, and Phonoaudiology (speech therapy), who were part of PET at the University. Data were analyzed using the Discourse of the Collective Subject technique. Central ideas were gathered into three categories: (1) teamwork and interprofessionality; (2) PET influences on SUS (Brazilian Unified Health System); (3) teaching-service-community integration. The study found evidence that PET enabled the students with opportunities to be involved in an education that supported the SUS principles and guidelines and to engage with interprofessional learning where there were exchanges of different professional experiences. The PET also supported the development of critical thinking for professional performance, as well as an integrated teaching experience that could support community development. The goal of the present study was to characterize normal and disordered Brazilian Portuguese liquids. The research hypotheses were that disordered liquid sounds would be characterized by (1) longer syllable and segment durations, (2) larger and more undifferentiated displacement of the tongue and (3) that the speech errors would show sub-phonemic differences depending on the target sound. The participants of this study were 11 children with phonological disorders and 9 control participants matched for age and educational background. The children’s tongue movement in the sagittal plane was recorded with ultrasound. The speech stimuli consisted of 3 repetitions of 5 words representing the four Brazilian Portuguese liquids /l/, /ʎ/, /ɾ/ and /ʀ/ in the context of the vowel /a/. A panel of four listeners transcribed each of the productions and classified them as correct or incorrect. The outcome measures were based on duration (syllable duration, ratio L/V) and tongue displacement (percentage average displacement, anterior displacement, posterior displacement). Based on mixed model analyses of variance, the first research hypothesis was confirmed for the /l/ and /ɾ/ targets, but not for the /ʀ/ and /ʎ/ targets. The second hypothesis was partially confirmed. Background: Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is a rare disorder with different levels of severity due to congenital head and face abnormalities which affect language, orofacial musculature, voice and breadth, suction, chewing and swallowing functions. Aims: This paper objectifies to report a Treacher Collins syndrome patient, describing phonoaudiological changes that can be found in individuals suffering from this syndrome. Methods & Procedures: The study was carried out with a male child at a teaching Speech Language Pathology clinic in Southern Brazil. The patient underwent audiological assessment, as well as orofacial motricity, swallowing, voice and speech assessments. Outcomes & Results: By means of the assessments, it was possible to perceive that the patient presents moderate hearing loss, inadequacy of phonoarticulatory organs, base of the tongue going backwards and epiglottis collapse over the larynx. In spite of evidencing significant difficulty in producing speech sounds, due to musculoskeletal changes, he effectively interacts in communicative situations, besides understanding sentences and narrated stories. Conclusions & Implications: The screened case report evidences that an interdisciplinary follow-up is indispensable for this patient suffering from Treacher Collins syndrome, which implies not only speech language therapeutic follow-up, but also in ear, nose and throat and orthodontics areas. Objective: To present the protocol called the Brazilian Scale of Hearing and Language Development. Materials and Methods: This is a protocol developed in order to assess and record the development of hearing and language skills in young children who have undergone cochlear implantation during the first two years of hearing age. It was applied to the parents of 41 children over a period of 12 months at the cochlear implant clinic in the Pequeno Príncipe Hospital in Curitiba, Brazil. Registered were: the time taken to implement the protocol; ease of understanding the questions; numerical results obtained by the children evaluated. Results: In general, the questions were considered easy to understand. The minimum time taken for application of the protocol was two minutes and the maximum was 11 minutes. At the end of the evaluation, it was possible to quantify the development in 100% of the cases. Objective: To evaluate the work process for CP cases in different rehabilitation centers according to Brazilian health policies and recommendations from the 'World Report on Disability'. Methods: A questionnaire - Evaluation Process of Rehabilitation of Children with CP was applied to the Coordinators of 13 services. This instrument has a maximum score of 108 points. Results: The results of the questionnaire varied from 28 to 64 points. The mean and SD were 43.5 and 10.9, respectively. The main administrative difficulties were: (a) presence of unmet demand, (b) patient absenteeism, (c) referral to primary care services, (d) inadequate physical facilities, (e) the scarce provision of prosthetics and orthotics, (f) insufficient financial resources, (g) human resources training, (h) difficulties with the use of the information system and (i) transportation difficulties for patients. This study aimed to describe the use of the Augmentative and Alternative Communication in two cases of aphasia after stroke. The speech therapy was divided in four stages that approached since the display of forms of communication for the album until the effective use this resource. In all stages, was used the pictographic system Picture Communication Symbols, because it is a system that has greater translucent iconicity. By reapplication of tests, was possible to show improvement in oral ability, writing, reading and denomination the two participants. To this end, the speech therapy was performed with two aphasic participants, using the Augmentative and Alternative Communication. This study allows conclude that the speech therapy using the Augmentative and Alternative Communication in two case of aphasia after stroke, brought benefits to functional communication the participants, and these resources had a augmentative role making communication more efficient and brought benefits in the rehabilitation process, promoting development of skills in reading e naming. This work aims to analyze and compare the therapeutic progress shown in children submitted to the Multiple Oppositions Approach, stimulated in therapy with the same target sounds. Two children with phonological disorder participated in this case report, being a boy (S1) and a girl (S2), aged 4:2 and 4:11, respectively. The speech data were collected through phonological evaluation. As treatment, we used the Multiple Oppositions Approach during 25 sessions with the same target sounds, all belonging to fricatives classes. The substitutions and omissions of each child's phonological inventory were analyzed, as well as the occurrence of pre and post-therapy phonological processes. It was observed that the subject with more substitutions (S1) was the one with phonemes major acquisitions in the phonological inventory. S1 showed the highest occurrence of cases in his speech, both pre and posttherapy, which made the speech intelligible to the listener. The processes involving the class of liquids showed a higher percentage of occurrences, even after therapy. The Multiple Oppositions Approach showed an adequate progress of the treatment of these children with phonological disorder, providing a phonological inventory expansion and a reduction of phonological processes occurrence, although with differences regarding the evolution presented by each one. Purposes: to describe the children's orthographic performance - regarding to the record of plosive consonants from the Brazilian Portuguese; check if the accent influences the occurrence of mistakes inside the words; and classify the pattern of the mistakes distribution. Methods: 210 text productions referred to 14 thematic proposals were analyzed, they were collected during the year 2001, when the individuals attended the First grade of Primary School. To describe the children's performance, for the first objective, the data were divided in Hits and Mistakes; for the second objective, the mistakes were classified according to their occurrence in accented and non-accented syllables, and, finally, for the third objective, the mistakes were subclassified in omissions, orthographic and phonological mistakes. The phonological mistakes were even subdivided, according to their occurrence inside and outside the occlusive class. Results: for the first objective, 5.746 possibilities of occurrence of plosive consonants in a position of simple syllable onset were found, with a high amount of hits; for the second objective, it was observed a higher occurrence of mistakes in non-accented syllables; and finally, for the third objective, it was possible to observe the predominance of phonological mistakes, followed by omissions and by orthographic mistakes, both inside the non-accented syllables and the accented ones. Still according to the third objective, in the phonological mistakes, a higher occurrence of mistakes inside the class was observed and, again, no accent influence. Conclusion: the importance of the phonetic-phonological aspects analysis in the acquisition of child orthography is highlighted, as well as the relevance of the distribution of hits and mistakes in the orthographic performance. Purpose: to propose clinical risk indicators of the constitution of the speaking subject. Methods: From the risk indicators for child development and from the operating model of language symptoms, four axes were drawn that support the constitution of the speaking subject: the assumption of a speaking subject, recognition of the speaking subject, recognition of the significant and responsiveness of the speaker to the speech of the other. Parental information mentioned during speech therapy interviews of users of three Basic Health Units were grouped by similarity, classified, and analyzed according to each of the four axes of the constitution of the speaking subject. Results: The analysis allowed us to establish twelve preliminary clinical indicators for the constitution of the speaker. These indicators point to a possibility that the subject might present speech and language disorders, supporting not only their intervention but also measures to promote the health of the speaker. Purpose: to study and verify that the phonological disorder is a continuum of language delay, in other words, if children with atypical phonological development previously had some delay in language development. Methods: the data were collected and organized into two groups, Group 1 comprised 10 children with language delay, speech therapy performed for stimulation and progressed after treatment, and then changed to the speech sector. Already Group2 consists of 554 subjects who arrived with phonological features and thus were diagnosed after the evaluations. Results: the findings of this study showed no significant association between sex and diagnosis, and the distribution between boys and girls was similar. In the analysis performed between age of onset of first words were not found significant results. However, the comparison between age of onset of first words and diagnosis were significant result, and the age of onset in the group with language delay, later than in other diagnostic hypotheses. Conclusion: the results of this study support the literature, because the phonological refers to a change in the phonological level only, rather than a continuum of language delay. Purpose: to analyze, in an interdisciplinary perspective, the play and language in family interection with psychological risk children, between 21 and 26 months, and the need for early intervention indicated by clinicians from different professions, comparing the look of these with their theoretical and clinical practice in childhood. Methods: a qualitative, longitudinal study of 16 children with psychological risk between 0 and 18 months by Child Development Risk Indices and by interviews. They were evaluated in a shoot of 20 minutes of free play interaction with their mothers when they were between 21 and 26 months. The qualitative analysis was performed by three experienced child development clinics, an occupational therapist, a speech therapist and a psychologist. Results: twelve of the sixteen children, despite symbolism in play, showed psychoaffective limitations in the interaction with their mothers, and had clinical intervention indication (08 children) or brief orientation (04 children). Conclusion: the results showed a relationship between clinical practice and training in post-graduate professionals who privileged the analysis of psychoaffective factors between the mother and the child. Purpose: to verify and identify the use of uncommon repair strategies in children with phonological disorders, relating the use of those to age and gender variables to linguistic variables such as degree of deviation, syllable structure, classification of the sounds and the position of the word. Methods: the data are taken from a database of the Department of Language and Speech studies of the Federal University of Santa Maria. We selected the data according to these criteria: diagnosis of phonological disorder, ages from 4:0 to 7:11, and the ones who were allowed to participate by signing the consent form. The results obtained at the first phonological assessment of the child were analyzed. Results: there were significant differences in the use of the uncommon repair strategies in our sample, as well as the relationship between the use of those strategies and age, mainly between the ages from 5:0 to 5:11, and the degree of deviation with more occurrences in the moderate-severe disorder. It was also obtained a significant relation between the classes of sounds, with predominant use of the fricatives. An occurrence of the unusual repair strategies in onset position was observed, being the consonantvowel the only structure found. Conclusion: it was found that the unusual repair strategies are not widely used by children with phonological disorders. In addition, it was found a significant relationship between the use of repair strategies and unusual variables, such as age, grade of phonological disorders and classes of sounds. The purpose of this paper was verifying the ABAB-Withdrawal and Multiple Probes Model effectiveness in the phonological system restructuring of children who present devoicing and the influence of target sounds choice in this process. Seven children were selected from a data basis of a federal institution. All of them were authorized to participate by their guardians and had to present devoicing before the intervention, being treated after by ABAB-Withdrawal and Multiple Probes Model. Speech and additional evaluations were performed to obtain the diagnosis. The disorder severity was obtained by Percentage of Consonants Correct-Revised. The subjects presented mild-moderate or moderatesevere disorders, the ages ranged from 5 to 7 years and 1 month. Three of them were treated with liquids and four with /z/. The speech samples from the first two sessions of withdrawal of the first therapy cycle were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. The means between initial and final evaluations or the evolution means between the groups were compared. There were significant increase of the sounds acquired number and the correct production of fricatives. However, the same didn't occur with the Percentage of Consonants Correct-Revised. The plosives and liquids consonants didn't demonstrate significant increase of correct production either. In the comparison between the groups treated by liquids versus treated by fricatives, there was no difference to the variables. It follows that the ABAB-Withdrawal and Multiple Probes Model improves some aspects of phonological systems of children who present devoicing. Purpose: to analyze the phonological changes obtained (phonological system, phonetic inventory and distinctive features alterations) pre and post-treatment by ABAB-Withdrawal and Multiple Probes Approach in different severity levels of phonological disorders. Method: the diagnosis was determined by the phonoaudiological evaluation in eight children with different severity level of phonological disorders, whose average age was 5:5 in the beginning of the treatment. All of them were treated by ABAB-Withdrawal and Multiple Probes Approach. It was analyzed the phonetic inventory, phonological system and distinctive features alterations. Results: all severity levels of phonological disorders demonstrated some improvement in the phonological system. Purpose: to provide relevant variable aspects in the therapeutic process of consonant clusters (CC) acquisition in children but maintains the CCV simplification. Methods: four children diagnosed with phonological disorders, aged 5:4 to 7:7 took part in the study, using the strategy of compensatory lengthening, having [R] and [l] in the phonetic inventory and performed to simplify the CC. Children were subjected to different speech therapies, and from data obtained in those we obtained reviews of linguistic and extra-linguistic variables that are relevant for therapy. Data were analyzed using the VARBRUL statistic program. Results: the program selected the variable 'severity' of the disorder as being relevant for the appropriate production, CC simplification and for the distortion of the CC liquid. There was highlighted the highest possibility of correct production of CCV when the subject is under phonetic therapy. The /d/ phoneme enhances the metathesis strategy. The replacement of the liquid was due to the variable 'subject' and the kind of liquid forming the CC. Conclusion: the variable 'severity' is very relevant to the success of the therapy as well as to the use of strategies to repair the problem. It was also observed that children who were under different kinds of therapies had different results to each of the therapies and had better performance using the phonetic therapy. This article aims to investigate the discrimination of phonemes for second language of an adult who speaks Spanish as native language who is acquiring Brazilian Portuguese as second language, according to the perceptions of the speaker himself. The article was developed from a case study using a semi-structured interview. A comprehensive reading and skimming of data were performed following the orthographic transcription of the interview, seeking to analyze what was recurrent in the patient's speech. Some determinants were shown and pointed to discursive categories of analysis. Five categories were created and 11 discursive sequences were selected for discussion. Based on the discursive sequences it was possible to attest the importance of the discrimination of phonemes in the learning process of second language, as well as the difficulty of developing second language in late age because it becomes restrict and unnatural. The discrimination of phonemes seems to be facilitated by some characteristics presented by the interlocutor that make the acoustic traces more prominent. Furthermore, the change in this ability can generate complex circumstances in the interaction between the pairs. Once there is an improvement in the discrimination of phonemes, there is also an improvement in both the speech production and comprehension, facilitating the language domain and the social interaction between pairs. Results demonstrated that the a better development of second language seems to be associated to the early exposure to the second language because in the first infancy there is still a great plasticity of auditory skills and the discrimination of phonemes is not restrict indicating that the formal teaching of second language and the perceptual skills should be stimulated at this age range. Purposes: to investigate the quality of life and voice in addition to the main auditory perception changes and acoustic measures jitter, shimmer and Glottal Noise Excitation in users of licit and illicit psychoactive substances that sought a treatment center for chemical dependency. Methods: crosssectional study in which participants responded to questionnaires Voice-Related Quality of Life survey and World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument-Bref. We made a voice recording of the vowel / a / and a count from 1 to 20. The vocal recordings were evaluated by GRBAS-I (G – overall degree of dysphonia, R – roughness, B – breathiness, A – asteny, S – strain) scale and acoustic analysis software by VoxMetria. Results: 29 protocols and voice recordings, 19 (65.5%) of the sample were male, and the mean age of the sample evaluated was 37.8 years-old. The scores both questionnaires indicate no differences between users of licit or illicit drugs. In perceptual analysis through GRBAS-I they revealed the predominance of mild and moderate changes in grade items of dysphonia, roughness and overall instability for licit and illicit drugs. The jitter and shimmer were altered for men and women, and most of the sample showed the standard deviation of the fundamental frequency as amended. Conclusion: changes in quality of life and voice were identified in both users of licit or illicit drugs. Most users showed changes in jitter and shimmer. This study aims to presenting a case study that reveals the health profile speech of individuals living in long-stay institution for the Elderly, located in a city in the south-central region of Paraná state in Brazil, based on the perception of its own residents . This is a case report from a qualitative study conducted by through semi-structured interviews involving 15 seniors. Upon analizing the feedbak from the elderly participants, the outcome presented that the institutional environment favors isolation . As for vocal health, most seniors reported non -perception of change in their voice upon aging . Regarding to the aspects related to listening perception it is possible to observe their awareness of the social and emotional consequeces of this problem to their lives. Thus, due to the importance of allowing voice / time to institutionalized elderly, this research devises opportunities for reflexion on the construction of speech focused on aiding this apopulation, based on the necessity for interaction / socialization of institutionalized elderly , so that long-term institutions do notbe meant as just « old deposits . » [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: to understand perception of the family towards outpatient Speech facility. Methods: qualitative research method using semi-structured interviews to collect details. The samples/research was done with six parents/legal guardians, inside the outpatient speech facility, in a Public hospital, located in Curitiba. The pre-established criteria used to choose the ones that were going to be part of the research was related to the patients that were going under a treatment over a five months period, coming once a week to the Hospital, and having free time to be part of the research. The method used to treat the data obtained, was a thematic analyses identifying itself in the Attending category, with the following subcategories: acknowledging the service, linkage and medical practices. Results: it was identified that parents/legal guardian had limited knowledge about Speech Therapy; the fragility of these families; the need of having a link process with these families, recognizing the activities developed by them. Conclusion: concerning each family group singularity, the interaction between the families and professionals helps the therapeutic process, encouraging and developing self-confidence of patients, creating a link, essential for parents participation. Purpose: to evaluate the evolution of the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences inUnified Health System (SUS), in the years2000, 2005and 2010. Methods: this was a descriptive study, the units of analysis were the geographical regions of Brazil and universe of municipalities aggregated in population size. We analyzed theyears 2000, 2005 and 2010, and usedsecondary datato collectinformation onthe amountand the amount paidbyspeech therapists procedures performed, and the number ofprofessionals in theSUS. Results: there was a large increase in procedures of speech-language therapy in the country, with the largest growthin the North.Among municipalities, the largest increaseoccurred among thosesmallerpopulation. In 2010, 89.8% of municipalities didn't perform any type of procedure care speech-language therapy. Between 2000 and 2010 the coefficient procedures/1000 habrose from19.8 to 60.7. The evolution of speech-language therapy spending in SUS showed that the proportional growth of these procedures was greater than the increase in total outpatient spending. And among the groups, calls for the orthotics and prosthetics showed the highest growth. In the years analyzed, the country showed an increasein the number ofspeech therapists, despite beingshown adeficit ofprofessionalsin 2010. Conclusion: the evolution of speech-language therapy assistance in SUS showed significant growth between 2000and 2010. Introduction: Law 10.436/2002, regulated by Decree 5.626/2005, made official the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) as a legal means of communication and expression of deaf people in Brazil, and defined the implementation of Libras as a mandatory curricular discipline in training courses in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. This linguistic recognition included in the legal instruments legitimizes the linguistic, cultural and identity specificities of the deaf person. In this direction, mapping the contributions of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology in Bilingual Speech Therapy studies becomes necessary. Objective: To provide an overview of the scientific production that deals with the interface between Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, Libras and Bilingual Speech Therapy. Method: A search was carried out for publications linked to national and international databases, covering the period from 2002 to 2022, with the beginning of the time frame determined by the year of the enactment of Law 10.436/2002. Results: As a result, 18 articles, seven master's dissertations, two doctoral theses, three course completion works, one e-book and one editorial were retrieved, totaling 32 retrievals. It should be noted that five articles were published after 2020, year when the Committee on Sign Language and Bilingualism for the Deaf, allocated within the Department of Language, was approved by the Brazilian Society of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Conclusion: The investigation based on the interface of Speech-Language Pathology and Bilingualism for the deaf becomes necessary for reflections on the Speech-Language Pathologist's action fronts towards the deaf person, using sign language. Purpose: to analyze documents of System of Primary Health Care (SIAB) tool and verify its potential for speech-language's action planning. Methods: we analyzed the documents of Ministry of Health for the SIAB and accessed the records and reports of the SIAB's Family Health Strategy and Municipal Health Department. Results: the data from SIAB express the life / health conditions of diseases and disorders of the families as well as reveal the conditions of service and health production, however, there are limitations such as, external interference (incompleteness of teams and mismanagement of the data) that impair their use. Conclusions: the data available on the audiologist SIAB approaching the real needs of users, promoting the organization of activities, stimulating the role of professionals and individuals favoring the bond and the solvability of the shares, which does not mean that they are sufficient, it is always possible to prepare or improve tools to facilitate the deployment or implementation of speech-language's actions directed to the promotional activities in different levels of health care.
