Objective: Delineate a socio-demographic profile of multiparous teenage mothers at a public hospital in Brazil. Method: This is a cross-sectional study consisting of 915 interviews with teenage girls, including 170 multiparous subjects whose babies were born alive. Results: The multiparous teenage mothers had the following average characteristics: 17.8 years old; first pregnancy at 16 years; beginning of sexual life at 14.2 years; dropped out of school at 13.6 years; attended school for 6 years with only 10% still attending school when they were interviewed; 87.4% had prenatal exams; monthly income was reported to be 0.3% less than the national minimum salary. Conclusion: Teenage mothers are in need of better social, educational, and health care in order to have a greater chance of a positive motherhood experience, thereby creating a better, healthier environment for their children. Objective: Few previous studies assessed specifically attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, predominantly inattentive subtype (ADHD-I) in nonreferred samples. This study investigated the association between ADHD-I and prenatal exposure to nicotine. Method: In a case-control study performed between September 2002 and April 2005, we assessed a nonreferred Brazilian sample of 100 children and adolescents with ADHD-I and 100 non-ADHD controls (6-18 years old). Cases and controls, matched by gender and age, were screened using teacher reports in the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham-IV (SNAP-IV) scale. They were systematically evaluated through structured diagnostic interviews. Prenatal exposure to nicotine and potential confounding factors were evaluated by direct interview with mothers. Results: Adjusting for confounding factors (maternal ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, birth weight, and alcohol use during pregnancy), children whose mothers smoked greater than or equal to 10 cigarettes per day during pregnancy presented a significantly higher odds ratio for ADHD-I than children who were not exposed to nicotine during pregnancy (odds ratio 3.44; 95% confidence interval 1.17-10.06). Dimensional analyses showed significantly higher inattentive scores in subjects whose mothers smoked greater than or equal to 10 cigarettes per day than in others after adjusting for confounding factors (p = 0.002). Conclusions: In a nonreferred sample, the authors expanded to ADHD-I previous findings documenting the association between prenatal exposure to nicotine and broadly defined ADHD in clinical samples. Despite success in achieving viral suppression during pregnancy in people living with HIV (PLWH), postpartum adherence remains a challenge. We aimed to describe rates of adherence at a Prevention of Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission (PMTCT) Center before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was conducted from a cohort of PLWH who received prenatal care and were virally suppressed near delivery. We tracked combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) pickups for 12 months and HIV viral load (VL) from 2 to 12 months after delivery. We defined flexible adherence as a monthly pickup of cART and strict adherence as also having VL < 200 copies/mL and at least one maternal HIV VL between two and twelve months postpartum. Pre-pandemic was defined as delivery from March 2017-February 2019 and pandemic as March 2020-February 2022. During the study, 1119 PLWH were followed, and 965 (86%) were suppressed near delivery. There were 511 pre-pandemic and 290 pandemic participants. Adherence rates were 66/511 (13%) and 38/290 (13%), respectively. During the pandemic, more participants conceived using cART and were undetectable at the start of prenatal care; nevertheless, postpartum adherence was no better than pre-pandemic underscoring the need to improve strategies for adherence specific to this subset of PLWH in the postpartum period. Objective: To analyze prenatal and perinatal stressors associated with molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) in adolescents. Methods: Prospective cohort study collected prenatal (socioeconomic status, maternal age, number of prenatal visits, smoking, obesity during pregnancy, abortion history, gestational hypertension) and perinatal stressors (type of delivery, gestational age, birth weight, intensive care unit‐ICU at birth). The outcome was MIH at 18–19 years follow‐up (n = 590). MIH was defined according to the Ghanim criteria – Model I. We performed a sensitivity analysis, including opacities demarcated in index tooth, incisive or molars, Model II. Through structural equation modeling, we analyzed direct and mediating pathways between multiple stressors with outcomes. Results: MIH was observed in 15.25% (n = 90), and opacities demarcated in any index tooth were observed in 22.8% of adolescents (n = 135). In Model I, no stressor explained MIH significantly, although we watched high standardized coefficients (SC) for low birth weight (SC = 0.223, p = 0.147), lower gestational age (SC = 0.351; p = 0.254), and ICU admission (SC = 0.447, p = 0.254). In Model II, advanced maternal age (SC = 0.148; p < 0.05) and not undergoing prenatal care (SC = 0.384, p < 0.03) explained opacities demarcated in incisors or molars. Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the association between syphilis in pregnancy and low birth weight, small for gestational age, and preterm birth. Methods: This longitudinal study used Brazilian National Information System for livebirths (SINASC) linked to the gestational syphilis cases from Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) from 2011 to 2017. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression were used to compare the birth outcomes of pregnant women with and without syphilis. The study protocol was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Institute of Collective Health of the Federal University of Bahia (CAAE: registration no. 18022319.4.0000.5030). Results: A total of 17 930 817 live births were included in the study. Of these, 155 214 (8.7/1000) were exposed to syphilis during pregnancy. Maternal syphilis increased the odds of low birth weight (aOR 1.88, 95% CI: 1.85–1.91), small for gestational age (aOR 1.53, 95% CI: 1.51–1.56), and preterm birth (aOR 1.35, 95% CI: 1.33–1.37). Higher odds were observed for pregnant women with VDRL titer ≥64 and untreated maternal syphilis when compared to mothers without syphilis. Analysis stratified by prenatal care showed higher odds for all adverse birth outcomes for mothers attending ≤6 prenatal appointments. Conclusion: Our findings showed a strong association between gestational syphilis and adverse birth outcomes with increased odds observed among women with higher VDRL titers, lack of treatment, and fewer prenatal appointments. These results highlight the need for adequate screening and treatment for gestational syphilis during pregnancy to mitigate the risk of adverse birth outcomes. Purpose: To obtain evidence of the clinical validity of the nursing diagnosis (ND) risk for disturbed maternal–fetal dyad in high‐risk pregnancy. Method: Causal validation of the ND through a case–control study performed in a university hospital with 155 high‐risk pregnant women: 31 cases and 124 controls. A causal association was found between the ND etiological factors and the occurrence of disruption of the symbiotic maternal–fetal dyad; an association was verified when the etiological factor presented a p‐value <0.05 and odds ratio >1. Findings: The risk factor absent–inadequate prenatal care; populations at risk, such as young‐advanced maternal age and economically disadvantaged pregnant women; and association conditions, such as maternal conditions and compromised fetal oxygen transport, increased the outcome likelihood. The associated condition maternal illnesses appeared as a protective factor. Conclusions: Evidence of clinical validity of the ND risk for disturbed maternal–fetal dyad was obtained, and an association between etiological factors and disruption of the symbiotic maternal–fetal dyad was found. Implications for nursing practice: The results contribute to advance scientific knowledge in nursing teaching, research, and practice and support the nursing process in high‐risk pregnancies. The aim of this research was to evaluate the incidence of congenital syphilis and the ratio between congenital syphilis and syphilis in pregnant women in Brazil according to socioeconomic indicators (inadequate water supply and sanitation; illiteracy at 15 years of age or older; household income per capita; proportion of poor people; Gini index; human development index; and average health expenditure per inhabitant by the health system) and prenatal quality-of-care indicators. We conducted an ecological study using a sample composed of 257 municipalities, each with ≥ 100,000 inhabitants. Data was collected from four public databases: the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, comprising socioeconomical data from the 2010 census; and the data of 2019 available in the databases of the Department of Informatics of the Brazilian Health System, Information and Management of Primary Care, and the Electronic Citizen Information System. Descriptive analysis of dependent and independent variables and bivariate analysis by Negative Binomial regression were carried out. The mean incidence of congenital syphilis was 38% higher in municipalities with a Human Development Index up to 0.785 (ratio of means [RM] = 1.38; p = 0.049) and 57% higher among populations where less than 50% of primary healthcare services provided a rapid test for syphilis (RM = 1.57; p < 0.001). The ratio between congenital syphilis and syphilis in pregnant women was 29% higher in municipalities with a low household income per capita (RM = 1.29; p < 0.001) and 28% higher in locations where less than 50% of the primary healthcare services provided a rapid test for syphilis (RM = 1.28; p < 0.001). There was no statistical significance of the quality of prenatal care compared to the outcomes. This result underscores the challenges in detecting syphilis infections among pregnant women during prenatal care, consequently increasing the risk of vertical transmission of the disease to the fetus. In this study, we report the first isolation of Hanseniaspora opuntiae obtained from four pregnant women in Brazil. Clinical isolates were obtained from four samples taken between 35 and 37 gestational weeks, as part of the routine antenatal care for maternal colonization screening for Streptococcus agalactiae group B. The patients were immunocompetent, with two of them diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus. Species identification was performed by MALDI-TOF MS and rDNA sequencing. While Hanseniaspora species have not traditionally been considered a typical opportunist pathogen, our findings emphasize the importance of investigating and screening for Hanseniaspora in pregnant populations, highlighting H. opuntiae as a potential agent of human infections. Gestational syphilis (GS) in adolescents is a challenge for Brazilian public health, with high incidence rates. Testing, diagnosis and treatment of sexual partners is essential to interrupt the chain of transmission, but since 2017 it is no longer a criterion for the proper treatment of pregnant women. We sought to analyze and synthesize the knowledge produced about the health care of sexual partners of adolescents with GS in Brazil. We carried out a systematic review in the BVS, SciELO and PubMed databases, selecting articles that addressed GS and/or congenital syphilis (CS) in adolescents aged 15 to 19 years and that included information about sexual partners. Forty-one articles were comprehensively analyzed using the WebQDA software and classified into two categories: a) Approach to sexual partners during prenatal care, and b) The role of sexual partners in the transmission cycle of GS and CS. The studies show that the partner's approach is deficient, with a lack of data on the sociodemographic profile and information on testing and treatment. In the context of Primary Health Care, there are no studies that address factors inherent to the context of vulnerability of sexual partners in relation to coping with syphilis. In Brazil, lack of quality in the delivery of prenatal care is a persistent concern. In this study, I analyze the dynamics taking place in the prenatal clinical encounter, and illuminate how the requirement to produce metrics through registration and monitoring endorses a form of bureaucratic care. This form of care develops in a context characterized by scarcity and a lack of medical resources, where healthcare professionals attempt to contain uncertainty. Ruled by notions of risk, centered in measuring practices, and saturated by an overvaluation of technology, bureaucratic care reinforces the disenfranchizement and stigmatization of Black rural women. Objective: To evaluate the association between sociodemographic and obstetric factors and the health‐related quality of life of pregnant women in high‐risk prenatal care. Methods: A cross‐sectional study of women in high‐risk prenatal care in Ceara, Brazil. The investigated outcomes were health‐related quality of life, using the Medical Outcomes Study 36‐item short‐form health survey; the investigated covariates were sociodemographic and obstetric data. Associative analyses were performed using the Jamovi® software version 0.9. Results: Of the 276 women included in the study, women with the following characteristics presented a better quality of life in some domain of the scale: age equal to or greater than 35 years, higher income per dependent, religious, living with three or fewer persons, with their own home, in primigestation, nulliparous, with no history of previous abortion, and with up to two living children. The regression model showed an association between the total scale score, which means a higher quality of life in women with age equal to or greater than 35 years and a higher income per dependent. Conclusion: The study identified sociodemographic and obstetric factors that may affect the quality of life of high‐risk pregnant women, providing subsidies to health providers so that they can promote better prenatal care. Congenital hydrocephalus is a significant challenge in neurosurgery, particularly in resource-limited settings. This study focuses on the congenital hydrocephalus in Brazil, a developing country, over the past 13 years. This study is a retrospective analysis of congenital hydrocephalus treatment and outcomes using data records on DATASUS from January 2008 to July 2021. Demographics, cost of hospitalizations, amount paid to professionals, mortality, and mean length of stay (LOS) were analyzed. Statistical analysis was conducted to determine significant associations between these indicators and pediatric hydrocephalus. DATASUS recorded 8493 cases of congenital hydrocephalus in the studied period, with a prevalence of 24.28 per 100,000 newborns, mostly linked to spina bifida. Congenital hydrocephalus caused 60.83 ± 13.98 neonatal deaths per year, with the highest rate among 32–36 weeks gestational age. Acquired hydrocephalus led to 1063 infant deaths, whereas congenital hydrocephalus resulted in 3122 deaths, with no clear trend by the years. White infants had the highest mortality. A total of 33,184 shunt procedures were performed, with an average cost of $715.37 per procedure. The mortality model showed no significant effects of cost or professionals' salary, but a significant effect of LOS on hospitalization costs was observed. Pediatric hydrocephalus in Brazil's public health system is a significant burden. Congenital hydrocephalus prevalence and mortality emphasize the need for early diagnosis and treatment. Early diagnosis, prenatal care, and adequate resources are crucial. This study offers insights into congenital hydrocephalus, highlighting challenges and future directions for improved care. Objective: to understand the care practices of nurses focused on women's health in PHC. Methods: This is cross-sectional research with a quantitative-qualitative approach, carried out with 24 nurses from Primary Health Care in the state of Sergipe. The interviews were conducted from December 2020 to April 2021, using a semi-structured script. The analysis of the quantitative data occurred in a descriptive way, the qualitative one occurred through content analysis according to Bardin. Results: The practices most frequently mentioned by the interviewees were: prenatal nursing consultation; Pap smear and syndromic approach to sexually transmitted infections, clinical examination of the breasts and request for mammography; In family planning, health education was highlighted; In the postpartum period, they commented on the clinical and obstetric evaluation of the woman and the orientations. Conclusion: Nurses act mainly as fundamental agents in the promotion and prevention of women's health, acting in various phases of women's lives and assisting in the maintenance of health and in the prevention of risks and diseases. COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy is safe and effective in reducing the risk of complications. However, the uptake is still below targets worldwide. This study aimed to explore the factors associated with COVID-19 vaccination uptake among pregnant women since data on this topic is scarce in low-to-middle-income countries. A retrospective cohort study included linked data on COVID-19 vaccination and pregnant women who delivered a singleton live birth from August 1, 2021, to July 31, 2022, in Rio de Janeiro City, Brazil. Multiple logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with vaccination during pregnancy, applying a hierarchical model and describing odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals. Of 65,304 pregnant women included in the study, 53.0% (95% CI, 52–53%) received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy. Higher uptake was observed among women aged older than 34 (aOR 1.21, 95%CI 1.15–1.28), black (aOR 1.10, 1.04–1.16), or parda/brown skin colour (aOR 1.05, 1.01–1.09), with less than eight years of education (aOR 1.09, 1.02–1.17), living without a partner (aOR 2.24, 2.16–2.34), more than six antenatal care appointments (aOR 1.92, 1.75–2.09), and having a previous child loss (OR 1.06, 1.02–1.11). These results highlight the need for targeted educational campaigns, trustful communication, and accessibility strategies for specific populations to improve vaccination uptake during pregnancy. Objective: To analyze the association between child exposure to intimate partner violence (CEIPV) committed against their mother and functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in school-age children. Methods: A prospective cohort study was carried out that evaluated 626 mother-child pairs living in a poor urban area in the Northeast of Brazil. The mothers were asked about their children's exposure to intimate partner violence. Holden's classification was used, which investigates ten types of CEIPV from prenatal care. The number of exposures, age of onset, and the perpetrator of the exposure were also verified. The FGIDs in children were identified from the mother's responses to the questionnaire about pediatric gastrointestinal symptoms, Roma III version parent-report, translated and cross-culturally adapted into Brazilian Portuguese. Results: FGIDs were more frequent among children exposed to violence than those not exposed (OR: 1.64; 95% CI: 1.04-2.58; p = 0.03). Likewise, in children who suffered four or more types of exposure (OR: 1.81; 95% CI: 1.10-2.96; p = 0.01), in which the exposure started in the first two years of life (OR: 1.93; 95% CI: 1.08-3.47; p = 0.02) and in those whose biological father was the perpetrator of the violence (OR; 1.62; 95% CI: 1, 05-2.48; p = 0.02). Conclusion: Corroborating the proposal of the biopsychosocial model, CEIPV increases the chance of occurrence of FGIDs in school-age children. Therefore, early identification and proposals for appropriate interventions are suggested both for the prevention of CEIPV and for the prevention and follow-up of FGIDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Collaboration between different health professionals is essential to ensure safe and quality prenatal care and favorable birth outcomes. Objective: To describe interprofessional prenatal care and management strategies in the context of primary health care. Materials and method: Qualitative research conducted between August and December 2022. Data was collected using an instrument to analyze the content of infographics produced by 26 professionals working in primary health care in southern Brazil, as an evaluation activity for a qualification course. The content of the infographics was analyzed using the coding process proposed by Minayo. Results: The data analyzed enabled three thematic categories to be identified: "The necessary intersectoral and interprofessional coordination;" "Responsibilities built and shared between pregnant women and professionals;" "Planning and qualification of workflows and processes." Conclusions: Interprofessional prenatal care and management strategies in the context of primary health care are associated with overcoming fragmented and dichotomous approaches, as well as the prospect of more participatory, dialogic, and interactive prenatal care and management processes, with the inclusion of various health actors. During pregnancy, the various changes women undergo can affect their health status. Manual therapies are important aids because they do not use medication. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of osteopathic manipulative treatment on the intensity of lumbar and pelvic pain and changes in quality of life. This prospective study included women over 18 years old and between 27 and 41 weeks pregnant, and excluded women with fetal malformations, multiple fetuses, premature rupture of membranes, and in labor. Forty-six pregnant women were selected and divided into two groups of ≤3 and ≥4 visits. Statistically significant improvements were observed in the intensity of maximum low back pain (7.54 ± 1.47 vs. 3.815 ± 1.73, p ≤ 0.01) and minimum low back pain (5.67 ± 2.03 vs. 3.111 ± 1.67, p ≤ 0.01), maximum pelvic pain (6.54 ± 2.22 vs. 2.77 ± 1.64, p = 0.01), and minimum pelvic pain (5.615 ± 2.21 vs. 2.615 ± 1.66, p = 0.01). Both groups achieved improvements in quality of life indices, with the improvements achieved by the ≥4-visits group being statistically significant. Osteopathic treatment was effective in reducing the intensity of lumbar and pelvic pain and in improving the quality of life of pregnant women in the third trimester. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Our aim was to assess the use of dual/poly tobacco in a sample of pregnant women. Design: cross-sectional survey. Methods: Twenty prenatal care units in Botucatu, Sao Paulo, Brazil. We evaluated 127 high-risk pregnant smokers during prenatal care. Those who were 12–38 weeks pregnant and were currently smoking conventional cigarettes. The study enrollment took place between January 2015 and December 2015. The dual/poly prevalence of tobacco products during pregnancy and the characteristics related to smoking in pregnant smokers through a specific questionnaire containing questions related to sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidities, gestational history, smoking history, secondhand smoke exposure, nicotine dependence, motivation stage and use of alternative forms of tobacco. Results: Mean age was 26.9 ± 6.6 years, most had only elementary education and belonged to lower income economic groups. Twenty-five (19.7%) smoked conventional cigarettes only while 102 used conventional and alternative forms of tobacco products. Smoking pack-years was significantly lower in those only smoking conventional cigarettes than in dual/poly users. Proportion of patients with elevated degree of nicotine dependence was higher in conventional cigarettes users. On the other side, alcohol intake was higher in dual/poly smokers when compared to conventional cigarettes group. The alternative forms of smoking were associated with significantly higher occurrences of comorbidities as pulmonary, cardiovascular and cancer. Conclusions for Practice: The prevalence of alternative forms users of smoking products is high during pregnancy. These data reinforce the importance of a family approach towards smoking in pregnant women and education about the risks of alternative forms of tobacco. Significance: What is Already Known? Studies show that the prevalence of pregnant women who consume alternative forms of tobacco is high, and that these types of smoking are also harmful to pregnancy. What this Study Adds? Background: The fear of childbirth (FOC) harms maternal and fetal health, however it has been little studied in Brazil. This research aimed to determine the prevalence of FOC in a maternity hospital in southern Brazil and identify its associated factors. Methods: The Wijma Delivery Expectancy Questionnaire – W-DEQ(A) was used to assess the prevalence of FOC, and its relationship with sociodemographic variables, gestational history, aspects of the current pregnancy, knowledge about childbirth, anxiety symptoms (Beck Anxiety Inventory), depressive symptoms (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale), and perception of social support (Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support) was investigated. Questionnaires about the content of FOC and information sources regarding childbirth were also applied. Results: We interviewed 125 pregnant women between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy between July and September of 2021, and 12% of them scored ≥ 85 on the W-DEQ(A), indicating severe FOC. There was a significant correlation between FOC and anxiety symptoms (r = 0.50, p < 0.001), depressive symptoms (r = 0.34, p < 0.001), and poor social support (r = -0.23, p = 0.008). FOC was lower in pregnant women with complete elementary education when compared to those with higher education (p = 0.003), however, those with negative experiences in previous deliveries had more FOC than those who had had positive experiences (p = 0.001). More than 85% of them fear fetal distress. Conclusions: FOC is a prevalent condition that impacts the mental health of pregnant women. Therefore, health professionals should recognize and address it during prenatal care to provide integral maternal–fetal care and improve the childbirth experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pregnancy assistance occurs in the public and private spheres. In this care, there is a greater nutritional demand during pregnancy, for the mother and the fetus. Among the causes of infant mortality, the following stand out: low birth weight, prematurity, and inadequate prenatal care. In the low-income social setting, nutrition fails. Thus, food supplements are extremely important in prenatal care. The objective is to describe the most appropriate food supplementation for pregnant women, whether in the public or private sector, highlighting the national policy, after a bibliographic review, carried out from May to August 2022. In Brazil, more than 70% of pregnant women have gained weight, however with poor nutritional status. In public prenatal care in Brazil, folic acid and iron are offered. Maternal multivitamin supplementation, with nutrients other than iron and folate, such as vitamins D, A, E, C, zinc, magnesium, and others, is important. The public maternal nutritional problem encompasses socioeconomic factors, as well as failures in care. The divergence with private care, prevalent in developed countries, is notorious when observing maternal mortality. Men's Prenatal Care is a strategy to expand and promote the health of these people. We evaluated how the Family Health teams (eSF) conduct this artifice as a care strategy for the male population in Recife-PE, Brazil. This evaluative, cross-sectional, qualitative study involved nurses, doctors, dentists, nursing technicians, and community health workers. We applied a semi -structured questionnaire, followed by six focus groups with the eSF with the largest number of respondents in the first stage to deepen the development of the strategy. The thematic content analysis proposed by Bardin was performed. The evaluation matrix developed identified the main strengths and difficulties in the strategy's structure, work process, and results. We observed that, while accepted as an excellent strategy, we identified a resistance that permeates from structural to cultural issues, hindering the proposal to expand access to actions and services to promote men's health, preserving the biomedical model. Objectives: This study aimed to verify possible associations between sociodemographic and clinical factors in live births with spinal dysraphism. Methods: An analytical (descriptive and inferential) and ecological study was carried out based on secondary data of 11,308 live births with spinal dysraphism registered in the Live Birth Information System (SINASC) in Brazil from 1999 to 2019. Demographic factors analyzed were age, education, mothers' marital status and geographic region. The clinical factors analyzed were duration, gestation period, birthweight, and number of prenatal visits performed by women who underwent medical follow-up. Results: There was an increase in the number of cases of spinal dysraphism in recent years in Brazil with an annual percentage variation of 3.52%. However, the period from 2005 to 2009 showed a reduction in live births with spinal dysraphism. The regions with the highest incidence were the South and Southeast. The risk increased in mothers born after 1980, older than 30 years and with a high level of education. The risk was increased in live births of whites and blacks, born from double pregnancy and with body weight less than 3000 g. The absence of prenatal care was associated with a higher incidence. Conclusion: Sociodemographic and clinical factors have specific characteristics that can predict spinal dysraphism in newborns in Brazil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The rate of Cesarean section (CS) deliveries has been increasing worldwide for decades. Brazil exhibits high rates of patient-requested CS deliveries. Prenatal care is essential for reducing and preventing maternal and child morbidity and mortality, ensuring women's health and well-being. The aim of this study was to verify the association between the level of prenatal care, as measured by the Kotelchuck (APNCU – Adequacy of the prenatal care utilization) index and CS rates. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study based on data from routine hospital digital records and federal public health system databases (2014–2017). We performed descriptive analyses, prepared Robson Classification Report tables, and estimated the CS rate for the relevant Robson groups across distinct levels of prenatal care. Our analysis also considered the payment source for each childbirth – either public healthcare or private health insurers – and maternal sociodemographic data. Results: CS rate by level of access to prenatal care was 80.0% for no care, 45.2% for inadequate, 44.2% for intermediate, 43.0% for adequate, and 50.5% for the adequate plus category. No statistically significant associations were found between the adequacy of prenatal care and the rate of cesarean sections in any of the most relevant Robson groups, across both public (n = 7,359) and private healthcare (n = 1,551) deliveries. Conclusion: Access to prenatal care, according to the trimester in which prenatal care was initiated and the number of prenatal visits, was not associated with the cesarean section rate, suggesting that factors that assess the quality of prenatal care, not simply adequacy of access, should be investigated. The aim of the present study was to propose a quality prenatal (PN) care assessment model combining use and visit content (both adjusted for the weeks of gestation) to estimate inadequate PN care and associated factors in Rio Branco, Acre. A cross-sectional study was conducted using a population-based cohort of 1030 women in the city of Rio Branco in 2015. The use of PN care was classified according to the adapted Kotelchuck index by combining the performance of clinical-obstetric procedures adjusted for weeks of gestation. Levels of adequacy were built according to PN care use and content. Gross and adjusted odds ratios were estimated by using a logistic regression. The prevalence rates of inadequate prenatal care quality were 25.9% (Level-1), 54.8% (Level-2), 68.8% (Level-3), and 78.6% (Level-4). The factors associated with Level-1 were age ≤ 34 years (ORaj:3.74), not having a partner (ORaj:1.62), unplanned pregnancy (ORaj:1.73), and multiparity (ORaj:2.25); those for Level-2 comprised not having a partner (ORaj:1.82) and multiparity (ORaj:1.33); those for Level-3 were age ≤ 34 years (ORaj:3.31), not having a partner (Oraj:1.71), unplanned pregnancy (Oraj:1.45), PN in the private sector (Oraj:3.08), and multiparity (ORaj:2.17); those for Level 4 comprised not having a partner (ORaj:2.33), family income < 1 MW (ORaj:2.05), unplanned pregnancy (ORaj:1.41), PN in the private sector (ORaj:6.80), and multiparity (ORaj:1.49). To evaluate the indirect effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the care of women with pregnancies complicated by gestational or pre-existing diabetes, and their maternal-fetal outcomes. A cross-sectional panel data conducted in a University Hospital in Southern Brazil. Maternal-fetal outcomes and predictors of care from 235 pregnant women with type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes were evaluated. Two time periods were compared: six months preceding the pandemic, in 2019, and the COVID-19 period from September 2020 to March 2021. Comparisons were performed using analysis of variance, Mann–Whitney U, Fisher's exact and T-tests. Risks were calculated using the Poisson regression with robust estimates. Maternal age was lower (32.1 ± 6.8 vs. 34.4 ± 6.6, p=0.009) and rates of depression/anxiety were higher (16.5 vs. 7.4%, p=0.046) in the group evaluated during the COVID-19. Neonatal hypoglycemia (RR 4.04; 95% CI 1.37–11.98, p=0.012), and SGA rates (RR 4.29; 95% CI 1.93–9.54, p<0.001) were higher in the group assessed before the pandemic. Despite economic, social and structural impacts of the pandemic, parameters of maternal care were similar; diabetes control improved, and neonatal hypoglycemia and SGA rates were lower among pregnant women with diabetes during the pandemic. Background The Brazilian Ministry of Health (MoH) recommends double screening (DS) for syphilis and HIV during the first and third trimesters of antenatal care (ANC) to mitigate vertical transmission. We surveyed DS outcomes and their associated factors in a priority Brazilian municipality with >100 000 inhabitants who face challenges for both health problems. Methods A total of 399 women were followed up throughout pregnancy using medical records. Spatial and multinomial logistic analyses were performed. Results There was an incidence rate of 24.8%, 59.4% and 15.8% for 'full DS', 'partial DS' and 'without DS', respectively. Younger women and those with a history of both prematurity and multiparity were less likely to be in the 'full DS' category. There was an overlap of high-density clusters of 'full DS' and 'ANC in better quality basic health units', adherent to both the Family Health Strategy and the National Program for Access and Quality Improvement in Primary Care. Conclusions The poor DS outcomes presented in 75% of the cases were mostly linked to delays in starting ANC appointments or their discontinuity. Thus, the MoH recommendations, accompanied by ongoing training, technical assistance and the periodic evaluation of their implementation, need to effectively reach providers and promote counseling and awareness about the importance of DS for pregnant women. Aim: To assess the prevalence of domestic violence/intimate partner violence, aggressors, types of violence and associated factors in women who attend an antenatal and postnatal care service in a public hospital in Brazil. Design: Cross‐sectional study. Methods: We interviewed women attending antenatal and postpartum care services in a Brazilian public tertiary woman's hospital in Campinas, São Paulo, between July 2019 and September 2021. Data were collected through interviewer‐administered questionnaires previously used in healthcare settings: Abuse Assessment Screen (AAS); Woman Abuse Screening Tool (WAST); Hurt, Insulted, Threatened with Harm and Screamed (HITS). We evaluated the relationship between the sociodemographic characteristics of women and domestic/intimate violence using bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses. Results: Of the 600 pregnant and postpartum women interviewed, 138 (23%) had suffered any abuse. Some participants disclosed physical violence during pregnancy (2.3%) and during the last 12 months (5.3%). The partner was identified as the main aggressor in most of the cases (60%). When women had a partner, 3.5% reported domestic violence and 6.7% disclosed intimate partner violence during pregnancy or postpartum period. Women with non‐white skin colour (OR = 1.53; 95% CI 1.01–2.34; p =.048), gestational age ≤ 13 weeks (OR = 3.41; 95% CI 1.03–11.25; p =.044) and in postpartum period (OR = 2.81; 95% CI 1.32–5.99; p =.008) were more likely to experience domestic violence at some time in their lives. Women interviewed before the COVID‐19 pandemic were more likely to disclose that they had suffered any abuse. Conclusion: Experience of violence during pregnancy and postpartum period was more frequent in women with non‐white skin colour, in their first gestational trimester and in the postpartum period, and was more reported before the COVID‐19 pandemic. Antenatal and postpartum care services could be safe places to support violence survivors. Impact Pregnant and postpartum women are a vulnerable group to experiencing domestic violence/intimate partner violence. Violence can negatively affect women's and children's health and well‐being. Antenatal and postpartum care should be considered as a moment to routinely inquiry women about past and current violence experiences. Regular contact among healthcare professionals and women during this period offers a window of opportunities for implementing psychosocial interventions among women at risk of violence. Healthcare providers (i.e., physicians, psychologists, social workers, nurses and midwives) have an important role in identifying survivors, offering support and providing quality information to women. The Apgar score is applied immediately after birth to clinically evaluate the newborn, at the first and fifth minutes of life. The Apgar score can help diagnose scenarios of neonatal anoxia or hypoxia. This is a retrospective, descriptive, and analytical study that used secondary data from DATASUS (Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System), from 1994 to 2018. The studied population includes all live births in Brazil during this period. The inclusion criteria were pregnant women over 15 years old, and the exclusion criteria were multiple pregnancies, pregnancies lasting less than 37 weeks, and newborns with congenital anomalies. These criteria were established to reduce potential confounding factors in the analysis that could lead to errors in interpretation of the results. The variables studied were place of delivery, type of delivery, and number of prenatal consultations. As results, having 7 or more prenatal consultations is a protective factor for alterations in the Apgar score, as well as cesarean delivery and hospital delivery. It was observed that pregnancy care, regarding the studied variables, influences the Apgar score. However, future studies in different populations are necessary to confirm these results. A case-control study was carried out to estimate risk factors for perinatal mortality in a referral hospital for high-risk pregnancies in Curitiba-PR. Sociodemographic, maternal, pregnancy and concept characteristics data were obtained from the hospital records of 316 cases and 316 controls from 2013 to 2017. A hierarchical multiple logistic regression analysis was performed, remaining in the final model variables with p < 0.05. The results show an increased risk of perinatal death in mothers with blood type B (OR = 2.82; 95%CI: 1.07-7.43), who did not undergo prenatal care (OR = 30.78; 95%CI: 4.23-224.29), fetuses with congenital malformations (OR = 63.90; 95%CI: 27.32-149.48), born under 28 (OR = 24.21; 95%CI: 1, 10-531.81) and between 28-31 weeks of gestation (OR = 6.03; 95%CI: 1.34-27.17) and birth weight below 1,000g (OR = 51.94; 95%CI: 4.31-626.46), between 1,000-1,499g (OR = 11.17; 95%CI: 2.29-54.41) and between 1,500-2,499g (OR = 2.75; 25-6.06). Concepts of pregnancies with premature outcome, low birth weight and the presence of congenital malformations are the main risk factors for perinatal death. Access to quality and affordable healthcare is central to the fulfilment of women's reproductive and sexual health needs and rights. For this reason, the World Health Organization declared access to appropriate healthcare services during pregnancy and childbirth a fundamental women's right. Prenatal care is a recognized human right to women's health in Brazil, as declared by the 1988 Constitution and many Brazilian policies. However, implementing the rights to health in Brazil presents a fundamental performance gap between legal rights and their delivery concerning reproductive health. Through extensive fieldwork including focus groups, interviews with women and participate observation in two municipalities in northeastern Brazil, this article addresses these issues and explores women's lived experience of access to and their fulfilment of the right to health regarding prenatal healthcare. We offer and account of the experience of women regarding what they identified as barriers that trample their right to health, that is: a) limited personnel and medical equipment as a perception of neglect; b) timely delivery of services: time matters for perception and experience of rights; c) misinformation as a barrier to the exercise of health rights; and d) socioeconomic barriers. These barriers particularly affect the right of women in rural communities, with lower socioeconomic levels and education, as well as brown and black women, from an intersectionality perspective, who are already at greater health risk and inadequate prenatal care. As such, we argue there is a performance gap between what the normative and legal frameworks encourage the health system to do and what the system actually provides in terms of access, equality, respect and continuity of treatment amongst certain groups in society whose right to health are denied while their health risks increase. Background : It has been hypothesized that the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have changed the conduct of obstetric practices at the time of labor, delivery, and birth. In Brazil, many practices lacking scientific evidence are implemented in this care, which is charcaterized by excessive use of unnecessary interventions. This scenario may have been worsened by the pandemic. Thus, we analyzed the effects of the pandemic on care during prenatal care and delivery by comparing the results of two surveys (one was administered before the pandemic and the other during the pandemic) in public hospitals in Belo Horizonte - Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil. Methods: This cross-sectional and comparative study analyzed preliminary data from the study "Childbirth and breastfeeding in children of mothers infected with SARS-CoV-2", which was conducted in three referral maternity hospitals in Belo Horizonte - MG during the pandemic in the first half of 2020 in Brazil. The final sample consisted of 1532 eligible women. These results were compared with data from 390 puerperae who gave birth in the three public hospitals in the study "Birth in Belo Horizonte: labor and birth survey", conducted before the pandemic to investigate the changes in practices of labor and delivery care for the mother and her newborn, with or without COVID-19 infection, before and during the pandemic. In this research, "Birth in Belo Horizonte: labor and birth survey", data collection was performed between November 2011 and March 2013 by previously trained nurses. Between study comparisons were performed using Pearson's chi-square test, with a confidence level of 95%, and using Stata statistical program. Results: We found a significant increase in practices recommended by the World Health Organization during the pandemic including the following: diet offering (48.90 to 98.65%), non-pharmacological pain relief (43.84 to 67.57%), and breastfeeding in the newborn´s first hour of life (60.31 to 77.98%) (p < 0.001). We found a significant reduction of non-recommended interventions, such as routine use of episiotomy (15.73 to 2.09%), the Kristeller maneuver (16.55 to 0.94%), oxytocin infusion misused (45.55 to 28.07%), amniotomy (30.81 to 15.08%), and lithotomy position during labor (71.23 to 6.54%) (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Our study revealed a statistically significant increase in the proportion of use of recommended practices and a reduction in non-recommended practices during labor and delivery. However, despite advances in the establishment of World Health Organization recommended practices in labor, delivery, and birth, the predominance of interventionist and medicalized practices persists, which is worsened by events, such as the pandemic. Introduction: Prenatal care is a fundamental moment for health promotion to be carried out, since at that moment women are more receptive to new knowledge, with the aim of providing better healthcare for the baby. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes and practices of undergraduate students and professionals, both from the public and from private sectors in Brazil, regarding dental prenatal care. Materials and Methods: This study corresponded to an online questionnaire survey, via Google Forms, consisting of 17 general questions for undergraduates (n = 103) and 16 for professionals (n = 227) for demographic and school mapping, and 18 specific questions about the importance and protocol of dental prenatal care. T‐test, Mann‐Whitney U‐test and multiple linear regression were adopted (p <.05). Results: The average total score of the questionnaire for students and professionals was 12.40 and 15.65, respectively (p <.0001), indicating moderate knowledge. Professionals showed a higher prevalence of moderate (77%) and high (2%) knowledge of the subject when compared to undergraduate students (51% and 0% respectively). The graduation period in which the students were enrolled was a predictor of the total score of the questionnaire [F (1, 101) = 21.21; p <.0001; R2 =.165]. The female gender and the lower weekly workload were the main predictors of the total score of the questionnaire for professionals [F (3, 223) = 6.74; p <.0001; R2 =.083]. Conclusions: Although professionals have greater knowledge about dental prenatal care than students, there are still deficiencies in the knowledge and practices of them in respect of dental management during pregnancy. Although variation between observers in the assessment of the Apgar score, it remains a useful indicator of the general conditions of the newborn. This is a cross-sectional study based on population of live births in Brazil in 1999 and biennium 2018-2019. All declarations of live births (DNV) obtained from the Live Births System database were accessed. Frequencies were compared between groups using Pearson’s chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed. A statistical significance level of 0.05 was considered. We included 9.050.521 DNVs in our research. We found that 2,1% of newborns had 5th minute Apgar < 7 in 1999 compared with 0,9% in 2018-2019. Multivariate analysis shows that twins and teenage pregnancy are no longer risk factors. Among risk factors, we observed an increase in prematurity, low birth weight and congenital anomalies. An improvement in maternal markers was observed, especially increase in the number of prenatal consultations and schooling. Such findings demonstrate the importance access and adequate prenatal care and improved socioeconomic conditions as effective strategy to reduce neonatal morbidity and mortality. Background: The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative's Step 4 recommends: "support mothers to start breastfeeding as soon as possible after birth", thus contributing to the reduction of neonatal mortality. The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence of breastfeeding in the first hour of life in private maternity hospitals participating in the "Adequate Childbirth Project", a quality-of-care improvement project, and to analyze determinants of this outcome. Methods: Secondary analysis of data collected by the cross-sectional evaluative "Healthy Birth Study", conducted in 2017 in 12 maternity hospitals participating in the Adequate Childbirth Project, where 4800 mothers were interviewed, and hospital records were observed. Conditions that prevented breastfeeding at birth, such as maternal HIV-infection and newborns' severe malformations, were excluded. Multiple logistic regression was performed according to a hierarchical theoretical model. Results: The prevalence of breastfeeding in the first hour of life was 58% (CI 95% 56.6–59.5%). Lower maternal education (aOR 0.643; CI 95% 0.528–0.782), lower economic status (aOR 0.687; CI 95% 0.504–0.935), cesarean section delivery (ORa 0.649; CI 95% 0.529–0.797), preterm birth (aOR 0.660; CI 95% 0.460–0.948) and non-rooming-in at birth (aOR 0.669; CI 95% 0.559–0.800) were negatively associated with the outcome. Receiving information during prenatal care about the importance of breastfeeding at birth (aOR 2.585; CI 95% 2.102–3.179), being target of the quality-of-care improvement project (aOR 1.273; CI 95% 1.065–1.522), skin-to-skin contact at birth (aOR 2.127; CI 95% 1.791–2.525) and female newborn (aOR 1.194; CI 95% 1.008–1.415) were factors positively associated with the outcome. Conclusions: The private maternities participating in the Healthy Birth Study showed a good prevalence of breastfeeding in the first hour of life, according to WHO parameters. Prenatal guidance on breastfeeding at birth, being target of the quality-of-care improvement project and skin-to-skin contact at birth contributed to breastfeeding in the first hour of life. Objective: describe the perception of nurses in primary care about prenatal care aimed at pregnant adolescents. Methods: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study of a qualitative, developed in the Basic Health Units of Guamá in Belém -- Pará, from May to April 2021. Results: Fifteen nurses participated, guided by a semi-structured form, with the data analyzed using the Laurence Bardin technique, resulting in six categories about the perception of prenatal care with adolescents. We conclude that nurses are aware of the positive impact that nursing care has on the conduct of pregnancy and the formation of autonomy for adolescents. Conclusion: The perception of the positive impact of nursing care on prenatal care for pregnant teenagers is perceived, however, it needs structural improvements in care, continued training of professionals and early capture of pregnant teenagers. Objectives: to evaluate coverage and identify factors associated with adequate prenatal care for adolescent mothers in Rio Grande, Southern Brazil, in a period of 13 years. Methods: over the years 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2019, a single standardized questionnaire was applied to all mothers at hospital level in this municipality. The outcome consisted of the proportion of puerperae women who started prenatal care in the first trimester and performed 6+ medical visits, completed 2+ HIV, syphilis, and urine tests. Chi-square test was used for proportions, Poisson regression in the multivariate analysis and the prevalence ratio (PR) as measure of effect. Results: among the 12,645 identified mothers, 2,184 (17.3%) were adolescents. Of this total, 35.2% (CI95%= 33.2%-37.2%) had received adequate prenatal care, ranging from 13.8% (10.8%-16.7%) in 2007 to 52,5% (46.8%-58.1%) in 2019. The adjusted analysis showed a higher PR for adequate prenatal care among those of older age and better schooling level, white/brown skin color, with a partner, never had an abortion, were primiparous and non-smokers. Conclusion: there was substantial improvement in coverage of adequate prenatal care over the period studied, but there is still a long way to go. Objectives: to describe the identification of fetal death during pregnancy in Brazilian and Canadian women. Methods: clinical-qualitative study with women who experienced the outcome of fetal death in their pregnancies, living in Maringá (Brazil) and participating in the Center d'intervention familiale (Canada). Data collection was performed through a semi-structured interview with the question: How did you find out about your baby's death? Readings were performed and the relevant aspects were categorized into themes according to the places where the death was confirmed. Results:in both countries, the main causes of death were the same, related to complications in pregnancy and childbirth, and health problems of the pregnant woman or fetus. Brazilian women had a higher frequency of deaths in the third trimester and Canadian women experienceda majority of deaths in the second trimester. The stillbirthswere found in different places, times and moments categorized at prenatal routine consultation, emergency care, expected death from congenital malformations of poor prognosis and labor. Conclusions: the determination of fetal death during pregnancy was due to possible intrinsic intercurrences of the pregnancy period. Based on the women's experiences, it was possible to demonstrate the clinical practice of identifying fetal death according to the cultural scenario. Continuous studies on prenatal care for women who had stillbirths are necessary for early detection of pathological conditions and appropriate interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study aimed to describe the characteristics of mothers and children assisted in a follow-up clinic for congenital syphilis and identify the factors associated with the confirmation of the diagnosis. Methods: This is a prospective study conducted from 2016 to 2019 in Montes Claros, Northern Minas Gerais, Brazil. Specific forms addressing maternal sociodemographic, behavioral, and lifestyle habit characteristics, as well as characteristics related to access to healthcare, were used. Hierarchical Poisson regression analysis was performed to define the factors associated with diagnostic confirmation, including the calculation of the prevalence ratios (PR) and respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). Results: A total of 200 binomials (mother-child) who attended at least one appointment as part of the follow-up after discharge from the maternity hospital were eligible for the study. The mothers were mostly young (79.0%), with a low educational level (43.0%), and black (89.5%). Nearly half of the mothers reported not having a steady sexual partner (42.5%). About a quarter attended less than six prenatal appointments (27.5%). Nearly half did not treat the disease adequately during pregnancy (24.5%). The diagnosis of congenital syphilis was confirmed for 116 children. The following factors were associated with the diagnostic confirmation after multiple analyses: low maternal educational level (PR 1.30; 95%CI 1.05–1.60), maternal risky sexual behavior (PR 1.34; 95%CI 1.07–1.66), inadequate treatment of the mother (PR 3.16; 95%CI 2.42–4.47), and lack of treatment of the partner (PR 1.44; 95%CI 1,18–1.81). Conclusions: Syphilis remains a major challenge. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate factors associated with neonatal near miss and mortality of the live birth cohort in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2015. Methods: Population-based retrospective cohort of live births (LB) of single pregnancy with 0–27 days of follow-up. Data were obtained from the Brazilian Live Birth and Mortality Information Systems. Logistic regressions with the analytical strategy of hierarchical determination were used for cases of near miss and deaths separately. Results: The cohort was composed of 85,850 LB. For every one thousand LB, about 16 were cases of near miss and six died. Maternal level of education, skin color, and age and adequacy of prenatal care were associated with neonatal near miss; for deaths, presentation of LB at delivery, birth weight, gestational age, and five-minute Apgar score are added. Conclusions: Besides confirming the effect of low birth weight, prematurity, and asphyxia on neonatal death, socioeconomic vulnerability markers – low education level and brown or black skin colors – were associated with neonatal death and near miss. Absent or inadequate prenatal care showed a strong association with both outcomes, being stronger for neonatal death. Investments in the quality of prenatal care and reduction of disparities in health care are necessary in Rio de Janeiro. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective:to identify the risk of depression during pregnancy among pregnant women receiving routine prenatal care and the associated factors. Method: a cross-sectional study, carried out with 201 pregnant women, in a routine prenatal clinic of a university maternity hospital. Data were collected using an electronic form containing a characterization instrument and the Escala de Risco de Depressão na Gravidez (Depression during Pregnancy Scale). The dependent variable was the risk of depression during pregnancy. Statistical analysis was performed by calculating the Odds Ratio and using the Chi-square and Fischer's Exact tests. Results: among the participants, 68.2% had a higher risk of depression during pregnancy. There was a statistically significant association between a higher risk of depression during pregnancy and occupation (p=0.04), that is, unemployment (OR=2.00) doubled the risk of depression. Conclusion: the high prevalence of the risk of depression during pregnancy indicates the necessity of planning, prioritizing, and integrating mental health into prenatal health services, especially in the primary healthcare environment, by health managers and policymakers. Objective: to analyze the scope of the performance indicators of the Previne Brasil Program of Primary Health Care. Method: an observational, descriptive study with a quantitative approach was carried out using secondary data, referring to the years 2020 and 2021, in the five Brazilian regions (North, Northeast, South, Southeast and Midwest), available in the Primary Health Care Information System. Descriptive statistics, relative frequencies and measures of central tendency and semiparametric modeling were used considering a 5% confidence interval. Results: there was evidence of evolution in the rates of performance indicators in most Brazilian regions in 2021, compared to 2020, however, the North and Midwest regions had incipient or negative rates, compared to the Southeast region. Despite the evolution in the rates of the indicators, few States managed to reach the goals established by the Ministry of Health for the strategic actions of prenatal care and women's health; and no state achieved the goal in strategic action on chronic diseases. Conclusion: it is considered important to monitor the evolution of current indicators, envisioning their qualification so that they can evaluate primary health care and assistance, as well as guarantee the achievement of goals by ensuring funding for primary care actions. The aim was to monitor the frequency of Breastfeeding (BF) and Exclusive Breastfeeding (EBF) in a Primary Healthcare Service, between the years of 2004 to 2015. This is a historical series is composed of eight cross-sectional surveys that were carried out during the annual vaccination campaigns. A total of 6027 children were evaluated, with a mean age of 6.2 months. There was a significant increase in the rates of BF (7.2%) and EBF (9.5%) in children less than four months old. In infants from four to five months old, a substantial decline was observed in the EBF rate between 2010 and 2015 (6.3%). The frequency of BF had a 10.1% increase in infants from six to nine months old and remained stable in children from 10 to 11 months of age. Among children less than six months old, monitoring by the health service had a positive impact on the frequency of BF (p < 0.001) and EBF (p < 0.001). The better BF and EBF rates seen in this study in infants followed up by the primary healthcare centers reinforce the evidence on the importance of expanding and qualifying primary healthcare as support for mother and child healthcare.
