Acca sellowiana is a subtropical tree in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae) native to southern Brazil and northeastern Uruguay. It is recognized for its value as a fruit-bearing, ornamental, and medicinal species. Based on distinctive characteristics of fruits, seeds, and leaves, as well as its geographical distribution pattern, two variants of the species are distinguished: the "Brazilian type" and the "Uruguayan type". The objective of this study was to characterize, for the first time, the diversity of 202 individuals from four wild populations in Uruguay, representative of the species' most southern natural distribution. Twenty-three morphological descriptors (leaf, flower, and fruit) and 204 RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) markers were used. The morphological data collected validated the main criteria that distinguish "Uruguayan type" populations from "Brazilian type" populations, such as lower seed weight and fruit size, thin and slightly rough skin, high pulp percentage, and hairy white abaxial leaf surfaces. Analyses of both morphological and molecular data indicated wide diversity and strong population structuring, which is relevant information for designing conservation plans, sustainable utilization, and genetic improvement of the plant genetic resources of this species. Acca sellowiana , known as feijoa or pineapple guava, is a diploid, (2 n = 2 x = 22) outcrossing fruit tree species native to Uruguay and Brazil. The species stands out for its highly aromatic fruits, with nutraceutical and therapeutic value. Despite its promising agronomical value, genetic studies on this species are limited. Linkage genetic maps are valuable tools for genetic and genomic studies, and constitute essential tools in breeding programs to support the development of molecular breeding strategies. A high-density composite genetic linkage map of A. sellowiana was constructed using two genetically connected populations: H5 (TCO × BR, N = 160) and H6 (TCO × DP, N = 184). Genotyping by sequencing (GBS) approach was successfully applied for developing single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. A total of 4,921 SNP markers were identified using the reference genome of the closely related species Eucalyptus grandis , whereas other 4,656 SNPs were discovered using a de novo pipeline. The individual H5 and H6 maps comprised 1,236 and 1,302 markers distributed over the expected 11 linkage groups, respectively. These two maps spanned a map length of 1,593 and 1,572 cM, with an average inter-marker distance of 1.29 and 1.21 cM, respectively. A large proportion of markers were common to both maps and showed a high degree of collinearity. The composite map consisted of 1,897 SNPs markers with a total map length of 1,314 cM and an average inter-marker distance of 0.69. A novel approach for the construction of composite maps where the meiosis information of individuals of two connected populations is captured in a single estimator is described. A high-density, accurate composite map based on a consensus ordering of markers provides a valuable contribution for future genetic research and breeding efforts in A. sellowiana. A novel mapping approach based on an estimation of multipopulation recombination fraction described here may be applied in the construction of dense composite genetic maps for any other outcrossing diploid species. The aims of this work were to characterize the damage caused by Paraulaca dives in feijoa (Acca sellowiana) and develop a diagrammatic scale to evaluate the severity of herbivory. The evaluations were carried out in a feijoa progenies orchard with eight-year-old. The beetles caused damage mainly on leaves, from October to December (spring season). The distribution of beetles in the orchard occurred randomly, not following a defined pattern of incidence. The diagrammatic scale of herbivory severity was represented by seven levels (1%, 3%, 5%, 7%, 15%, 32%, and 55% of the leaf area consumed). The use of this diagrammatic scale significantly increased the precision and accuracy of severity estimates by inexperienced evaluators. This can help in strategies to control this pest to expand the cultivation of feijoa in Brazil.

This study aimed to uncover the risk of diabetes and its associated factors among Brazilian residents in Japan. An anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted among Brazilians living in Japan who were aged >40 years. The questionnaire collected data on the participants’ Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC), basic demographics, and health conditions. The analysis was based on the FINDRISC to assess factors affecting the risk of diabetes. Among the 181 participants (mean age, 52.9 years), 77 and 104 were men and women, respectively; 26 (14.3%) people were diagnosed with diabetes. The participants were categorized into high- and low-risk groups based on a FINDRISC value of ≥12 and ≤11, respectively. The high-risk group, 26 [17.7%] patients, contained a significantly higher proportion whose education level was less than elementary school, who were unable to speak Japanese, and whose diets contained little feijoa than the low-risk group. Feijoa is a local Brazilian bean dish that is low in fat and calories but contains high protein content, which helps prevent diabetes. Our findings suggest that increased health literacy is important for controlling chronic diseases, including diabetes.

Abstract: The feijoa plant (Feijoa sellowiana, family Myrtaceae, synonym, Acca sellowiana) produces fruit similar to that of the guava. It is native to Brazil but is grown in many countries as a food crop, especially New Zealand, where it is valued for its highly aromatic fruit. This review covers published work on the bioactive components of the fruit of the feijoa and their pharmacology. Potential value might be added to this fruit if extracts of the fruit were to be used for nutraceutical purposes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper investigates traditional knowledge of the use and management of Acca sellowiana in southern Brazil. Fifty-six informants from three rural communities were assigned to one of four subgroups ("maintainers," managers," "cultivators," or "users") based on their responses regarding management and use of A. sellowiana. Traditional knowledge related to use of this species is widespread among rural residents, but traditional knowledge related to management is fragmented depending on whether one uses, manages, or cultivates the species. Knowledge held in rural communities suggests that A. sellowiana could play an expanded role in local economies as well as biodiversity conservation. We suggest that participatory research could stimulate greater local use as well as on-farm conservation of A. sellowiana. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Domesticated crop species are typically impacted, experiencing remarkable changes in the genetic structure of managed group of plants in comparison to its source populations. On the last years, several regional fruit trees have gained worldwide notoriety due to peculiar tastes and nutritional potentials. Therefore, cultivation of fruit trees became a suitable alternative to conservation of genetic resources as well as an important source of regional development. Acca sellowiana is a fruit tree with high economical potential. In this study, we evaluated the effect of management on genetic diversity in four differently managed populations of A. sellowiana , in comparison to plants of natural occurrence in Southern Brazil. Based on putatively neutral microsatellite markers, we show that managed populations of A. sellowiana retain high levels of molecular genetic diversity in comparison to natural populations, but also effects of plant selection on levels of inbreeding, LD, HWE and evolutionary patterns. Overall, we show that the management used by farmers, in addition to conserving molecular diversity, tend to increase the genetic variability, an important element for sustainable agricultural designs such as agroforestry systems, and better use of agroecosystem resources. Acca sellowiana (feijoa) and Eugenia involucrata (cherry) are fruits species of Brazilian biodiversity (Myrtaceae family). In this study, a sampling process was used with three different harvesting sites. The composition of phenolic compounds of these fruits was determined by HPLC-DAD-MS/MS. Moreover, the antioxidant capacity of hydroethanolic extracts against hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), hydroxyl (OH), peroxyl (ROO - ) and ABTS radicals was evaluated. Thirty and twenty-seven phenolic compounds were identified in feijoa and cherry, respectively. The major phenolic compounds found were pedunculagin isomer (5040.87, 3443.66 and 1324.95 μg·g -1 ) in feijoa and procyanidin (1406.54, 1888.00 and 1380.64 μg·g -1 ) in cherry. Hydroethanolic extract of these fruits was a potent scavenger of free radicals and excellent source of phenolic compounds. In hydroethanolic extracts of feijoa, the phenolic content increased by around 50%, while in the cherry the content was similar to that found in the fruit. For ORAC method, sample 2 of feijoa and cherry showed values of 383 and 126 µM·TE·g -1 , respectively, featuring the highest antioxidant capacity. This study is the first to report the identification of castalagin, catechin and epicatechin in feijoa, and rutin in cherry.
