Introduction: The sea cucumber Holothuria (Halodeima) grisea Selenka, 1867 is a common echinoderm in intertidal regions along the Brazilian coast, which recently became the focus of unreported and unregulated fisheries. This study was carried out in sandy-rocky substrates at Armação do Itapocoroy, Penha, Santa Catarina (26o47' S; 48o36' W), near its southern limit of geographic distribution. Objective: To determine the densities (individuals*m-2) of Holothuria (H.) grisea within a spatial-temporal perspective as well as to determine biometric and growth characteristics of the population. Methods: Two-meter wide transects perpendicular to the coastline were carried out in winter and spring 2019 and in summer and spring 2020, in periods of spring low-tides. In each sampling occasion the total number of specimens of H. grisea were determined, and a group of 90 organisms was submitted to in situ biometrics (weight, length and width), and immediately returned alive to their habitat. Results: The densities of H. (H.) grisea were significantly higher in the subtidal sector and lower in the upper intertidal sector with no indication of significant differences among sampling campaigns. Depth was the primary factor explaining the observed density patterns and rugosity of the substrate was secondary but also important. The body length ranged from 5.2 to 22.5 cm, whereas the weight varied from 6.0 to 230 g. The mean and modal lengths were 12.54 and 13 cm, respectively. Approximately 75 % of the population sampled was between 10 and 14 cm and the average weight was 60 g. Estimates from von Bertalanffy growth function indicate that the youngest sea cucumber was one year-old, and the oldest had approximately two and a half years. Conclusions: This is the first study to determine biometric parameters for H. (H.) grisea in southern Brazil and the first one to estimate growth and age estimates for a wild population of this species. The objective of this study was to evaluate newborn biometrics and characterization of Podocnemis expansa turtle nests in the Crixás-Açu rivers, municipalities of Mundo Novo, Goais, Brazil. It consists of evaluating the newborns and the characterization of the nests after hatching. There was no statistical difference between eggs with oil, predatory nests, dead newborns, un hatched eggs, shell (total number of eggs counted within a nest), as well as hatching and survival rates for the distance of 30 meters from the river course. Animal weight, hoof length, hoof width, plastron length, plastron width or number of shields were obtained statistically significant considering the same fixed distance of 30 or greater than 30 meters from the river bank. In the eggshell analysis, there was a statistical difference regarding the amount of the element "Carbon" found, unlike the samples of pH, "phosphorus", "potassium", "hydrogen", "aluminium", "calcium", "magnesium" and matter. Organic. As for the particle size analysis of the sand extracted from the nests, there was a statistical difference in two sizes; 1 and 2 millimeters. Prunus campanulata is a species largely adopted for landscape composition in Brazil with limited seedling production by seed dormancy, lacking studies about in vitro propagation. This study aims to evaluate different P. campanulata seed pretreatments on germination, and the effect of GA3 on dormancy break and seedlings biometry. Seeds were processed in three treatments: complete seeds, seeds without endocarp, and isolated zygotic embryos incubated in a WPM medium containing different GA3 concentrations (0.0, 2.0, and 4.0 mg L-1). After 30 days of in vitro incubation were evaluated the germination percentage, mean germination time, percentage of normal seedlings, percentage of seedlings with leaves, and survival percentage were. Seedlings greater than 3.0 cm were selected for ex vitro adaptation, evaluating after 32 days the biometric variables: total length, aerial part length, root length, and the number of leaves. Complete seeds do not germinate, suggesting dormancy associated with the endocarp, whereas seeds without endocarp and isolated zygotic embryos showed the same germination rate, with no effect on GA3. The GA3 promoted greater seedling growth at concentrations between 1.89 mg L-1 for the total length of the isolated zygotic embryo and 2.24 mg L-1 for the length of the aerial part of seeds without endocarp. In conclusion, seed processing, i.e., removing the endocarp or isolating the zygotic embryo can overcome dormancy, improving germination and seedling production of P. campanulata in vitro. Morphological features are essential to assess neonates' viability. In order to characterize the morphology and biometry of newborn agouti, 36 animals born at 103 days of gestation under human care in Teresina-PI, Brazil were evaluated. After birth, the newborns were weighed on digital precision scales, measured with a flexible tape measure and their external morphology was assessed. The animals observed had coat color trait of adults, open eyes, hairs in the nasal region and four incisor teeth. The forelimbs had developed four digits and the hind limbs three digits, with white edged claws and a short hairless tail. The following were observed: weight of 144.58 ± 33.39g and lengths: crown-rump 14.73 ± 1.82cm, total 19.88 ± 1.52cm, head to tail 16.95 ± 1.55cm, head 7.33 ± 0.59cm, thoracic girth 11.78 ± 1.36cm, abdominal girth 10.73 ± 1.21cm, tail length 1.18 ± 0.25cm, eye diameter 1.27 ± 0.27cm and ear length 0.21 ± 0.35cm. The agoutis presented morphological maturity at birth with external morphology very similar to that of the adult animals. Most of the births in this species are the double type and newborns that weigh more than 90g have better chances of survival in captivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the semi-arid region of Paraíba, cowpea has low productivity due to irregular rainfall and poor use of production technologies. An extensive study aimed at selecting more productive cultivars was conducted using biometric models. This first work had the following objectives: i. Quantify direct and indirect effects of primary and secondary components on grain production; ii. Identify variables with greater potential for cultivar selection in the semiarid region of Paraíba and iii. Determine the most appropriate selection strategies for the evaluated variables. The experiment was conducted in an experimental field. The influence of 6 primary and 6 secondary production components was evaluated on grain yield. Data were subjected to ANOVA. Genetic parameters, correlations and path analysis were estimated. Given the strong direct phenotypic and genotypic effects, pod yield results the most promising variable for higher grain yield selection. Direct and simultaneous selections are the most suitable strategies for the set of evaluated variables. However, further studies on selection indices are necessary to maximize genetic gains. Aim: This study aimed to assess fundamental biochemical values of healthy animals and to provide useful data on comparative physiologies of Testudines, being assessed the serum biochemistry profiles, and body and tail biometry of Trachemys scripta elegans and Trachemys dorbignyi bred in interaction in the semiarid region of the São Francisco river valley. Materials and Methods: Serum biochemistry variables (urea, creatinine, glucose, total serum protein, albumin, globulin, and albumin/globulin ratio), and biometry values of the body (mass [body mass (BM)], maximum curvilinear length [carapace length (CL)], and width [carapace width (CW)] of the carapace, maximum curvilinear length [plastron length (PL)], and width [plastron width PW] of the plastron), and the tail (total length of the tail [TLT], pre-cloacal tail length [PrCL], post-cloacal tail length [PoCL]) were measured after 24 h fasting. Results: T. s. elegans displayed higher BM, CL, CW, PL, PW, AST, TP, albumin, and globulin values. T. dorbignyi displayed higher values of glucose, TLT, and PrCL. Variables aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and total protein (TP) in T. s. elegans and glucose in T. dorbignyi explained most of the variance between the species and could serve to distinguish them. Conclusion: We conclude that most of the differences between T. s. elegans and T. dorbignyi shall be explained by biometric variables, AST, TP, and glucose, which characterize interspecific differences. Our results point out terms of reference for these species bred in captivity in the semiarid region of Brazilian Northeastern region and serve as a model for the comparative intra- and inter-species physiology and as a base for the health assessment of these species. Body size has a strong influence on the ecology and evolution of organisms' life history. Turtle species can exhibit variation in body size and shape between populations of conspecifics through usually broad geographical scales. This prediction is timely to be tested in this study with the species Hydromedusa tectifera. We aimed to evaluate the variation in body size between and sexual dimorphism within populations of H. tectifera in two areas in Brazil. Sampling occurred in Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul states in order to obtain morphometric measures of carapace and plastron of the individuals. We observed sexual dimorphism within populations. In Rio Grande do Sul state, females were larger than males in most of the carapace and plastron measures. In Minas Gerais state, males were larger than females regarding maximum carapace width. Overall, individuals from Rio Grande do Sul state were larger than those from Minas Gerais state. We discuss possible factors that might cause variation in morphology within and between populations of conspecifics. Current analysis was undertaken in the western region of the state of Paraná, Brazil, an agrostockbreeding reference center in fish production, characterized by 17 fish abattoirs and industries. The study informs the producer on fattening of fish lots and analysis of ponds' water quality to verify faults in management that contribute towards the difference in fish finishing size. Six ponds in four small farms in the municipality of Toledo PR Brazil were monitored during five months (October 2018 - February 2019). Samples with 50 specimens per pond were used for biometry, weighed and measured individually. Weight difference was calculated by sample standard deviation of each lot. Multiparameter probe measured temperature, pH, electric conductivity, dissolved total solids, dissolved oxygen and turbidity. Results showed strong relationship between turbidity, total dissolved solids and electric conductivity and difference in tilapia size. Over population in the ponds was also detected. Standard deviation of weight increased according to fish growth. Results show that water quality directly affects the development of fish and lack of proper management contributes towards an increase in differences in tilapia weight and size. The femoral nerve (FN) is described as originating from the lumbar plexus (L2, L3 and L4) and in its course it emits branches destined to each one of the quadriceps femoral muscle (QFm), which are originated in an isolated way or, from common trunks. The detail of the distribution of the FN in the QFm, allows to diminish risks associated with different surgical interventions carried out in the anterior thigh area. With the purpose of describing the distribution of FN in the QFm components. Fifteen formalized lower limbs were used, 10 on the left side and 5 on the right side of adult individuals, Brazilians, located in the Anatomy Laboratories of the State University of Ciências da Saúde de Alagoas (UNCISAL) , Maceió, Brazil. The FN was classified into four types according to its branch and distribution. Type II was subdivided into 3 subtypes and presented in 60 % of the samples and type III in 20 %. The FN was divided from medial to lateral in 5 branches (B1, B2, B3, B4, B5), where B1 was the most medial. The B1 gave rise to an average of 2.47 secondary branches (sB) and to 2.58 tertiary branches (tB), in 13.3 % the B1 did not emit sB. In 73.3 %, only one component of the QFm was invested; B2 gave rise to an average of 3.93 sB and 3.58 tB. In 26.7 %, it invested only one component of the QFm; B3 gave rise to an average of 3.33 sB and 2.0 tB. In 80 %, it invested only one component of the QFm. The distribution of B4 and B5 are shown in the text. Biometric results of origin, diameter and length of the mentioned branches are shown in tables. The data obtained in this research complements the knowledge of the regional anatomy, being able to be used by the surgical clinic and to carry out treatments that improve neurological disorders that affect the region. Th present article deals with the visual culture present in the books and textbooks on biotypology in Brazil, in the 1930s and 1940s. It analyses the representations of bodies in images, all of which were employed to guide people on the reasoning and practices of bodily measurement and classification according to the main biotypology approaches. Images herein discussed expressed the following scientific modus operandi of biotypology in Brazil: anthropometry, biometry and the construction of an average body; categorisation of biotypes, physical culture and classic aesthetic; and the link between normality, beauty and moral conceptions applied to women's body features. This analysis also seeks to shed light on some of the ways in which biotypology strayed from and was consistent with eugenic discourse in Brazil. The representation of bodies in Brazilian biotypology showed the efforts to construct normal and deviant bodies defined according to ideals of national and racial identity, perfection, symmetry, harmony, goodness, fairness, femininity and beauty. The article describes the nest of Glaucis dohrnii (Bourcier & Mulsant, 1852 - Passeriformes: Trochilidae) and characteristics of the "vine forest" (mata de cipó) in the municipality of Boa Nova, Bahia, where the bird and its nest were evaluated. The area is considered a transition zone between the biomes of the Caatinga and Atlantic Forest, rich in the biodiversity of bromeliad species, whose inflorescences are the principal food source of this species. The nest of Glaucis dohrnii was recorded on a bromeliad leaf (Bromelia sp). The municipality of Boa Nova is 80 kilometers from Jequié, the locale where the G. dohrnii was observed by Oliveiro Pinto in 1932, and both of these municipalities are composed of the Caatinga and Atlantic Forest biomes and ecotonal areas. In tropical and semi-arid regions of Brazil, phosphorus is one of the most limiting elements of cowpea productivity. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of applying five phosphorus doses in the soil on morpho-physiological and production components in three improved cultivars of cowpea. The experiment was carried out at the São Fernando farm located in José de Freitas, PI, Brazil, in a Plinthosol with a low phosphorus content. The experimental design was complete randomized block design with four replications in a 5 × 3 factorial scheme consisting of five phosphorus doses (0, 60, 120, 180, and 240 kg P2O5 ha-1) and three improved cowpea cultivars (BRS Guariba, BRS Tumucumaque, and BRS Cauamé). No interaction was observed between cultivars and phosphorus doses for any of the assessed variables. The cultivar BRS Tumucumaque showed the highest value for one-hundred-grain weight (21.0 g) and, together with BRS Guariba, the highest value of pod length. An increment was observed in growth (stem diameter, main branch length, leaf area, and shoot dry matter) and production characteristics (number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, one-hundred-grain weight, and grain production per plant) in response to increases in phosphorus doses. The dose of 183.1 kg P2O5 ha-1 provided the maximum technical grain yield, estimated at 2,023.3 kg ha-1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The propagation of mangaba (Hancornia speciosa Gomes) occurs mainly by seeds, a lower cost method that guarantees genotypic diversity. The great barrier is the lack of knowledge of the proper transplanting time of these seedlings. This way, the objective of this study was to evaluate the development of mangaba seedlings transplanted at different ages during the summer in Goiânia, Brazil. A randomized complete block design was used in a 2x4 factorial arrangement, with two mangaba subspecies (gardneri and cuiabenses) and four transplanting ages [45, 60, 75 and 90 days after sowing (DAS)], with four replications. Before transplanting, a destructive analysis was carried out on three plants of each subspecies to determine the biometric characteristics as a function of seedling age. The field evaluations initiated at120 DAS, evaluating monthly the seedling survival (%), plant height, stem diameter and number of live leaves per plant until 210 DAS. The biometric characteristics were not affected by the mangaba subspecies. The plant survival decreased linearly throughout the experimental period, regardless of the subspecies. The interaction age transplanting x DAS showed that at 210 DAS the seedlings transplanted later presented greater growth in height and number of live leaves. Regardless of the subspecies, the mangaba presents limitations for establishment in the field, and it is recommended the transplantio of seedlings with 90 days of age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study determined the presence of heavy metals in green sea turtles with and without fibropapillomatosis in Itapirubá and Cassino beaches, southern Brazil. The weight, curved length of the carapace and body index were determined and blood was collected to quantify the concentrations of cadmium, lead and mercury. A total of 51 blood samples were analyzed, being 46 positives for at least one of the metals. There was a greater number of juvenile turtles in Itapirubá, larger in size and weight than those in Cassino. No statistical differences were found between metal concentrations between regions or between turtles with and without fibropapillomatosis. There was no significant correlation between metal concentrations, biometric variables and the presence of fibropapilomatose. Metal concentrations were low in both regions, with the highest concentrations being Cd and the lowest Hg. • Southern Brazil is a region for developing of juvenile green sea turtles. • Green sea turtles from southern Brazil are exposed to pollutants in their environment. • Low prevalence of fibropapillomatosis may not be related to concentrations of heavy metals in blood, but to environmental quality. Objective: To establish reference charts for fetal biometric parameters in a non-selected risk population from Uberaba, Southeast of Brazil. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed among 5656 non-selected risk singleton pregnant women between 14 and 41 weeks of gestation. The ultrasound exams were performed during routine visits of second and third trimesters. Biparietal diameter (BPD) was measured at the level of the thalami and cavum septi pellucidi. Head circumference (HC) was calculated by the following formula: HC = 1.62*(BPD + occipital frontal diameter, OFD). Abdominal circumference (AC) was measured using the following formula: AC = (anteroposterior diameter + transverse abdominal diameter) x 1.57. Femur diaphysis length (FDL) was obtained in the longest axis of femur without including the distal femoral epiphysis. The estimated fetal weight (EFW) was obtained by the Hadlock formula. Polynomial regressions were performed to obtain the best-fit model for each fetal biometric parameter as the function of gestational age (GA). Results: The mean, standard deviations (SD), minimum and maximum of BPD (cm), HC (cm), AC (cm), FDL (cm) and EFW (g) were 6.9 ± 1.9 (2.3 -- 10.5), 24.51 ± 6.61 (9.1 -- 36.4), 22.8 ± 7.3 (7.5 -- 41.1), 4.9 ± 1.6 (1.2 -- 8.1) and 1365 ± 1019 (103 -- 4777), respectively. Second-degree polynomial regressions between the evaluated parameters and GA resulted in the following formulas: BPD = --4.044 + 0.540 x GA -- 0.0049 x GA² (R² = 0.97); HC= --15.420 + 2.024 GA -- 0.0199 x GA² (R² = 0.98); AC = --9.579 + 1.329 x GA -- 0.0055 x GA² (R² = 0.97); FDL = --3.778 + 0.416 x GA -- 0.0035 x GA² (R² = 0.98) and EFW = 916 -- 123 x GA + 4.70 x GA² (R² = 0.96); respectively. The Columbina talpacoti species, a common type of bird in Brazil, is often the target of illegal trade or used as pets, which can lead to the threat of extinction as the number of individuals of the species decreases. As this is a rare species with unknown hematological parameters, this study aimed to describe the species' leukocyte values and biometrics (weight). Twenty-five birds were captured at a private farm located in Guarapari, Espírito Santo, in southeastern Brazil. The capture and sampling were conducted in October 2014. The birds' body mass was measured, and their blood was collected. A blood smear was made, and a differential leukocyte count was performed. The average body mass found for the species was 46.7 ± 4.7 g. For hematologic reference, we used a value of 43.3 ± 14.6 for lymphocytes, and 55.8 ± 14.5 and 0.56 ± 0.76 for heterophils and monocytes, respectively. Objective: To evaluate facial morphology of non-mixed indigenous people living in the Xingu region. Studies on these populations report that the total genetic diversity is as high as that observed for other continental populations. On the other hand, eating habits are different between indigenous and urban population, as indigenous people still have traditional habits.Setting and Sample Population: The sample consisted of 106 indigenous subjects, in permanent dentition stage, belonging to four groups: Arara-Laranjal (n = 35), Arara-Iriri (n = 20), Xikrin-Kaiapó (n = 24), and Assurini (n = 27).Material and Methods: Standardized facial photographs were obtained, and fourteen measurements were analyzed. Intra- and intergroup homogeneities were examined by discriminant analysis, followed by anova and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Sexual dimorphism to each village was analyzed by Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney test, at p < 0.05.Results: Significant facial differences were found between male and female, indicating that sex data should not be grouped for intergroup comparison. Discriminant analysis showed a large intergroup heterogeneity, while an intragroup homogeneity was found, especially for females. It was also observed that some morphological features of the face are specific to some villages, regardless of ethnicity.Conclusions: Facial morphological characteristics were strongly different among groups, even comparing villages from the same ethnicity. Furthermore, a low diversity within groups was observed. Our findings, supported by previous reports on genetics and eating habits in these populations, reinforce the role of the genetic determination on craniofacial morphology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. Here we aimed to identify the main points of animal death by roadkill in the view of helping mitigation plans and reducing the impact over the local fauna of a protected area. Materials and methods. We surveyed the roads around a protected area of Cerrado (São Paulo, Brazil) from May 2012 to August 2013. We recorded the local of roadkills, biometric and morphologic data of the animals, and collected samples of tissue for molecular species confirmation. Results. Thirty-one roadkilled animals were registered, including threatened species: Leopardus pardalis; Cuniculus paca and Chrysocyon brachyurus. Most roadkills were represented by mammals (54.8%) and reptiles (38.7%), and the mortality rate was 1.46 animals/km/year. Three roadkill hotspots were detected, suggesting that they were important points of animal crossing, probably because of the existence of natural remnant vegetation and intersection of roads by riparian vegetation. Conclusions. This work provided strong evidence of the most critical points where mitigation strategies should be immediately implemented and highlighted the importance of detecting roadkill hotspots and the species or taxonomic groups more affected, helping to elaborate effective actions that can improve fauna conservation. This study aimed to describe the gonadal histology and the reproductive cycle of Crassostrea brasiliana in the mangroves of Guaratuba Bay in southern Brazil. Adults were collected monthly from January 2010 to April 2011 from three sampling sites in intertidal oyster beds. The animals were evaluated using biometric and histological analyses of the gonads. The gonadal tissue samples were processed according to the standard histological procedures, and permanent slides were prepared using Harris' haematoxylin and eosin. The oysters were identified at the species level using a molecular protocol. Females (69%) predominated over males (26%), with 4% indeterminate and 1% hermaphroditic. Mature females were more prevalent in February, March and December 2010 and in March 2011. Mature males were more prevalent in February and April 2010 and in March 2011. The presence of hermaphroditic individuals was sporadic, and oysters in immature stages or sexual repose were observed in only a few collections between the months of May and October 2010. This study evaluated the effects of the supplementation with aqueous extract of Agaricus blazei Murrill (ABM) on biometric and blood parameters and quantitative morphology of the myenteric plexus and jejunal wall in aging Wistar rats. The animals were euthanized at 7 (C7), 12 (C12 and CA12), and 23 months of age (C23 and CA23). The CA12 and CA23 groups received a daily dose of ABM extract (26 mg/animal) via gavage, beginning at 7 months of age. A reduction in food intake was observed with aging, with increases in the Lee index, retroperitoneal fat, intestinal length, and levels of total cholesterol and total proteins. Aging led to a reduction of the total wall thickness, mucosa tunic, villus height, crypt depth, and number of goblet cells. In the myenteric plexus, aging quantitatively decreased the population of HuC/D+ neuronal and S100+ glial cells, with maintenance of the nNOS+ nitrergic subpopulation and increase in the cell body area of these populations. Supplementation with the ABM extract preserved the myenteric plexus in old animals, in which no differences were detected in the density and cell body profile of neurons and glial cells in the CA12 and CA23 groups, compared with C7 group. The supplementation with the aqueous extract of ABM efficiently maintained myenteric plexus homeostasis, which positively influenced the physiology and prevented the death of the neurons and glial cells. Background Histopathological lesions and biometric variations in catfish species are statistically associated with chemical contaminant exposure. A histopathological and biometric database for the catfish Sciades herzbergii and Bagre bagre from São Luís Island (Port Area) and Caranguejos Island (Reference Area) is presented. Branchial and hepatic lesions were classified into three reaction patterns: 1) circulatory or inflammatory disturbances; 2) regressive changes; 3) progressive changes. This paper summarizes research efforts aimed at characterizing the biomonitoring potential of catfish from two islands in Brazil, which exhibit great habitat diversity and different levels of human intervention. Results The weights and lengths of the catfish caught at the Port Area were smaller than those from the Reference Area. No histopathological lesions were observed in S. herzbergii examined at the reference site (Caranguejos Island). In contrast, 90% of S. herzbergii from sites located in the Port Area (São Luís Island) had one or more types of branchial and hepatic lesions. One or more of the five lesions were observed on 16 B. bagre from São Luís Island and Caranguejos Island. Conclusion The utility of histopathological lesions and biometric data as sensitive indicators of the health of wild catfish populations has been demonstrated. Sciades herzbergii proved to be a better species for biomonitoring because it was more sensitive to the impacted site (Port Area) compared with the region relatively free of contaminants (Reference Area). The objective of this study was to evaluate the levels of environmental contamination in a protected area in the Brazilian Amazon. For this, two areas were chosen along the Mearim River: the reference area (A1) and the potentially contaminated area (A2), where water samples were collected, for physicochemical and microbiological analyses, as well as specimens of Hoplias malabaricus, for the evaluation of biometric data and incidence of branchial lesions. The physicochemical analyzes of the water from both areas showed contamination (low levels of dissolved oxygen, tubidity and high iron concentrations, especially in A2). The microbiological analyzes showed that all water samples showed total coliform values higher than those acceptable by CONAMA and WHO (with higher values in A2), in addition to E. coli values higher than those allowed by legislation in A2. Regarding biometric data, male and female fishes were significantly longer and heavier in A1 during the dry and rain seasons and the gonadosomatic index also showed higher values in A1 than in A2 in both seasons. H. malabaricus showed gill lesions of minimal to moderate pathological importance in A1 and A2, indicating that specimens from both areas of the Mearim River showed biological responses to contamination. The observed changes in the water quality, bimetic parameters and the histological analyzes of the specimens of H. malabaricus directly reflect on the quality and health of the fishes in the Mearim River, and point to the urgent need for prevention and remediation of contamination in these ecosystems.

Abstract: Biometric features and oil contents of macauba (Acrocomia aculeata) palms natively growing in sites representatives of the Brazilian Cerrados (Campo Grande – CG, and Sao Gabriel do Oeste – SGO), and Pantanal (Corumba – CO, and Aquidauana – AQ) biomes were studied. The objective was to obtain data that could assist better planning for the exploitation of natural populations, and knowledge to help selection and breeding programs. Plant (spines presence; stem circumference; number and length of bunches) and fruits characteristics (fruits per bunch; size; mass; proportion of components – husk, pulp, shell and kernel; fruits moisture at ripening; pulp and kernel oil content) were measured from ten native palms from each site. There was variability in biometrics, biomass production potential and oil yield in the palms within each site and among the sites. No correlation was found between biometrics features and oil contents. On average, plants from CG showed better general productive characteristics than any other of the studied sites, but a large variability in fruits size. Palms from CO presented smaller fruits, but they were more homogeneous in size and with higher kernel oil contents. Fruits from SGO show bigger mass and size, but it did not result in higher fruit biomass production or oil yield. Although oil yields potential were almost half of what is usually measured in other areas of Brazil, results provided interesting data for a better planning to rational exploitation of native macauba groves in these areas. Variability within plants from all sites indicate that they could be a reserve of genetic materials for further development of cropping systems aiming production of oil and other useful products. Although low- and middle-income countries still bear the burden of major infectious diseases, chronic noncommunicable diseases are becoming increasingly common due to rapid demographic, epidemiologic, and nutritional transitions. However, information is generally scant in these countries regarding chronic disease incidence, social determinants, and risk factors. The Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) aims to contribute relevant information with respect to the development and progression of clinical and subclinical chronic diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. In this report, the authors delineate the study’s objectives, principal methodological features, and timeline. At baseline, ELSA-Brasil enrolled 15,105 civil servants from 5 universities and 1 research institute. The baseline examination (2008–2010) included detailed interviews, clinical and anthropometric examinations, an oral glucose tolerance test, overnight urine collection, a 12-lead resting electrocardiogram, measurement of carotid intima-media thickness, echocardiography, measurement of pulse wave velocity, hepatic ultrasonography, retinal fundus photography, and an analysis of heart rate variability. Long-term biologic sample storage will allow investigation of biomarkers that may predict cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Background: Proper ascertainment of the history of alcohol consumption by an individual is an important component of medical diagnosis of disease and influences the implementation of appropriate treatment strategies that include prescription of medication, as well as intervention for the negative physical and social consequences of hazardous/harmful levels of alcohol consumption. Biological (biometric) diagnostic tests that provide information on current and past quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption by an individual, prior to onset of organ damage, continue to be sought. Methods: Platelet monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) protein was quantitated in 2 populations of subjects who had histories of different levels of alcohol consumption. Levels were assayed by immunoblotting or by ELISA. The development and evaluation of the new ELISA-based measure of platelet MAO-B protein levels is described. Results: One subject population constituted a nontreatment-seeking, cross-sectional subject sample, and the other population was a longitudinally followed, hospitalized group of subjects. An algorithm combining measures of platelet MAO-B protein with the plasma levels of carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) and with liver enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase or γ-glutamyltransferase [GGT]) can detect hazardous/harmful alcohol use (HHAU) with the highest sensitivity and specificity in the cross-sectional nontreatment-seeking population. In the treatment-seeking population, low MAO-B protein levels at admission are associated with heavy drinking prior to admission, and these protein levels increase over a period of abstinence from alcohol. Conclusions: The platelet MAO-B protein measurement is particularly effective for male alcohol consumers. The combined use of MAO-B protein measures together with measures of CDT and GGT does, however, improve the diagnostic utility of both markers for ascertaining HHAU in women. Food searching activity by subterranean termites involves workers, soldiers and nymphs. The present study was carried out for elucidating aspects of nymph foraging behavior in Brazil where the species Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann, 1896) is exotic. Monitoring was conducted through making regular collections from seven different colonies for a period of 22 months, which exhibited the production of forager nymphs all year round. A biometric study was conducted to determine the instars of the forager nymphs collected. The identification of male and female nymphs was also conducted for establishing the sex proportion, which was slightly male-biased. From the 533 forager nymphs collected, 34 were from the 3rd instar, 280 from the 4th instar and 219 from 5th instar. The results suggest that 3rd instar nymphs were not too active in the foraging activities because they were collected only in one colony and in an insignificant quantity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: to describe anthropometric measurements in adults according to facial type and gender. Method: 105 Caucasian adults took part, 34 male (32.4%) and 71 female (67.6%) with ages between 20 and 40-year old, in a private orthodontic clinic in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The findings from the cephalometric analysis were compared for determining facial type with seven direct anthropometric measurements: anterior face height- nasion to menton; distance bizygomatique- zygion left to right; lower face height- subnasale to menton; middle face height- nasion to stomion; chin height- supramenton to menton; inferior face height- stomion to menton; and posterior face height- condylion to gonion. Results: for male, the facial types classified by means of cephalometry had significant statistical differences for the average values of the anthropometric measurements: anterior face height, lower face height, middle face height and inferior face height. For female, significant statistical differences were found in the following measurements: anterior face height, lower face height, middle face height, inferior face height and posterior face height. Conclusion: there was sexual dimorphism for all collected anthropometric measurements. The male showed higher average values when compared with the female. Estimates of repeatability coefficient have been used in character study of several species of palms, helping to define the number and appropriate period of assessment of genotypes to increase the efficiency of breeding programs. For macaw palm there are no reports of such studies. In this context it is important to determine the repeatability coefficient of the following biometric characteristics of fruits: fruit weight, fruit volume, equatorial diameter of the fruit, kernel weight, kernel volume, equatorial diameter of de kernel, and thickness of the endocarp, and the determination of the minimum number of ratings for an efficient selection process and evaluation of macaw palm subsamples. The study was conducted at the Department of Plant Science, Federal University of Viçosa, and 145 macaw palm subsamples were analyzed, from collections made in the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Maranhão and Pernambuco. There were significant differences for all traits analyzed, and there was agreement on the magnitude of repeatability coefficients of each feature obtained by different methods. However, the repeatability coefficients ranging between eight characteristics, from 0.68 to 0.99, and were observed for feature endocarp thickness and volume of kernel, respectively. The coefficient of determination obtained from 10 repetitions for the eight features and the four methods were superior to 95%. The evaluation of four fruits is sufficient to assess the traits of macaw palm subsamples with 90% accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary It has been suggested that craniofacial morphology plays an important role in masticatory function, however, there are controversies and unsolved questions that still require elucidation. The aims of this study were to evaluate masticatory performance, mandibular movement, electromyographic (EMG) activity and muscle effort of masseter and anterior temporal muscles during mastication. Seventy-eight dentate subjects were selected and divided into three groups according to vertical facial pattern: brachyfacial, mesofacial and dolichofacial. Silicon-based material was used for chewing tests. Masticatory performance was determined by a 10-sieve method, and masticatory movements during mastication were assessed using a 3D mandibular tracking device. Electromyographic activities of masseter and anterior temporal muscles were evaluated during mastication, and muscle effort was calculated by the percentage of activity required for mastication based on maximum muscle effort. Data were analysed using anova and anova on-ranks tests. Dolichofacial subjects presented significantly poorer masticatory performance (6·64 ± 2·04; 4·33 ± 0·70 and 3·67 ± 0·63), slower rate of chewing (1·34 ± 0·27, 1·18 ± 0·22 and 1·21 ± 0·20 cycles per second) and larger posterior displacement during mastication (6·22 ± 2·18; 5·18 ± 1·87 and 5·13 ± 1·89) than meso- and brachyfacial individuals, respectively. No statistical difference was detected among groups for the other masticatory movement parameters. There was no difference in absolute EMG amplitudes of masseter and anterior temporal muscles during mastication among groups, but the relative effort of both muscles was higher in dolichofacial, followed by meso- and brachyfacial subjects (masseter: 39·34 ± 2·25; 36·87 ± 4·05 and 33·33 ± 4·15; anterior temporal: 38·12 ± 1·61; 38·20 ± 8·01 and 35·75 ± 2·48). It was concluded that the vertical facial pattern influences masticatory performance, mandibular movement during mastication and the effort masticatory muscles required for chewing. Objective To report the biometric values and ultrasonographic aspects of the normal eye of the Striped owl ( Rhinoptynx clamator). Sample population Twenty-seven healthy, free-living, adult Striped owls from the Ecological Park of Tiete Veterinary Ambulatory (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Procedures Both eyes of all owls underwent B-mode ultrasonographic examination and biometry was performed for lens axial length (WL), depth of the anterior (AC) and vitreous (VC) chambers, axial length of the globe (LB) and the pecten oculi (LP) of both eyes, using a 12 MHz probe. The owls were manually restrained without sedation and the eyes were topically anesthetized. Results Biometric and statistical findings were as follows: in the left eye, the means and standard deviations were: LB = 23.76 ± 0.92 mm, WL = 7.79 ± 0.27 mm, AC = 4.27 ± 0.47 mm, VC = 11.36 ± 0.29 mm and LP = 5.69 ± 0.50 mm; in the right eye, the values were: LB = 24.25 ± 0.79 mm, WL = 8.03 ± 0.40 mm, AC = 4.56 ± 0.52 mm, VC = 11.40 ± 0.25 mm, and LP = 5.68 ± 0.41 mm. No significant differences were found between left and right eyes measurements of LB, WL, AC, VC, and LP dimensions. Conclusions Ocular ultrasound aspects and biometric values of the Striped owl are reported. The study’s results provide means for various ocular measurements. The objective of this work was to evaluate the testicular development and the body weight, calculate the testicular volume by three different mathematical formulas and verify the testicles form of the 33 rams of Santa Inês breed, borne between January and September 2007 and created in the South region of Espírito Santo State, Brazil. The animals were weighed and the testicles measured each 28 days, since weaning (90 days) until they reach 354 days of age. The testicular measures and the body weight increased with the age, up to 12 months. The cylinder formula better appreciated the testicular volume. The testicular form predominant up to six months of age was the long / oval and from eight months was the long. The scrotal circumference did not vary with the testicular form; however, the length and the testicular volume were bigger in the long / moderate and long forms. Heaviest rams presented long testicles. It is possible to conclude that during this period of life the lambs present quick testicular growth and weight, however, they are still developing, the cylinder formula appeared more trustful to calculate the testicular volume and due to change in the testicular form it is suggested an evaluation of the testicular volume like additional criterion in the selection of Santa Inês lambs. Introduction: The painful syndromes of the upper limbs are quite frequent in workers exposed to repetitive activities. Electrical permeable reactive points (EPRPs) are detectable on the intact skin tissue, and when present, are suggestive of inflammatory reactions with outbreaks of pain. This study was designed to correlate ultrasound and electrical permeable reactive points in patients with symptoms of pain in the upper limbs. Materials and Methods: Fifty-one patients with symptoms of pain and seen in an outpatient clinic of a private institution from the city of Campina Grande (PB), Brazil, participated in this study. The EPRPs were mapped through the skin surface part with toposcopic of Lasermed ref. 4090 Carci; when they were detected, an audible sound and no interference was emitted by the device. Reports were also used for USG symptomatic of the region to correlate to the findings of EPRPs. Results: The most frequent occurrences were detected in the shoulders, with 62.7%; the rarest occurrences were found in the elbow, with 3.9% of the studied sample. The females presented a higher prevalence for symptoms of pain, corresponding to 56.9% of the sample. The Kappa correlation index for the variables of EPRPs and USG was 0.487. Evaluation of doses and acidity corrector products in biometrics characteristics in production of passion fruit seedlings. The search for new agricultural products is of utmost importance for a sustainable and ecologically viable agriculture. The present work was conducted in the seedling nursery of the Fruticulture Sector of the Federal University of Lavras, Lavras, Minas Gerais State. The experimental delineation was randomized blocks in a 3 × 4 factorial scheme with 3 products, 4 doses e 3 repetitions. The doses were calculated in order to reach the established saturation, according to the concentration of each product. The doses were: zero, half, full and the double the recommended dose. Incubation was carried out for silicon and limestone, while Lithothamnium, due its quick release, only was incorporated to the ground. The evaluated characteristics were: growth of the aerial part (mm), size of the root system (mm), number of leaves, dry matter of the aerial part (mg), dry matter of the root system (mg) and total dry matter (mg). The three products in question provided quality seedlings, being that 1.4 times the recommended dose was the best one for the formation of passion fruit seedlings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magonia pubescens is a common native tree species of Brazilian savanna with a great utilization potential because of its economic and ecologic characteristics. The aim of this work was to evaluate the biometrical characteristics of fruit and seeds of this species and its germination potential. It was studied 28 fruit and 293 seeds originated from trees placed in Aquidauana - MS. The study was conducted in the Vegetable Physiology Laboratory and nursery conditions belonged to Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias (FCA) of Universidade Federal da Grande Dourados (UFGD). There was a large variation in the size, weight and the seed-number of the fruit that presented middle values 6,66 cm of length, 8,14 cm of diameter, 248,21g fresh mass and 13,14 seeds. On the other hand, the seed size variation was smaller than the fruit size variation. The seeds presented middle values 4,81 cm of length, 8,44 cm of width and 3,5 of fresh mass. For the germination study, the seeds received the following treatments: 1) KNO3 1% 24h; 2) KNO3 2% 24h; 3) GA 500 mg. L-1 24h; 4) GA 250 mg L-1 24h; 5) Water 24h; 6) Control. The experiment was set up according to a three-replicate randomized complete design with 6 treatments. The treatment of immersion in water for 24 hours promoted the highest values of emergence percentage (80%). The gibberellins promoted the highest values of aerial part height (meddle of 14,7cm). The highest values of fresh and dry aerial part matter were observed in seedlings originated from seeds treated with GA 500 mg. L-1 (1,26 and 0,24g, respectively). The highest values of fresh and dry cotyledons matter were observed in seedlings originated from seeds treated with KNO3 1% 24h (7,63 and 1,81, respectively). Objective To examine the relationship between specific types of child mental health problems and severe physical punishment, in combination with other important known risk factors. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study in Embu, São Paulo, Brazil, as the Brazilian component of a multicountry survey on abuse in the family environment. From a probabilistic sample of clusters that included all eligible households (women aged 15--49 years with a son or daughter < 18 years of age), we randomly selected one mother--child pair per household (n = 813; attrition rate: 17.6%). This study focused on children aged 6--17 years (n = 480). Child Behaviour Checklist CBCL/6--18 was used to identify children with internalizing problems only, externalizing problems only, and both internalizing and externalizing problems (comorbidity). Severe physical punishment was defined as being hit with an object, being kicked, choked, smothered, burnt, scalded, branded, beaten or threatened with a weapon. We examined other potential correlates from four domains: child (gender, age, ever witnessing marital violence); mother (education, unemployment, anxiety or depression, marital violence); father (absence, drunkenness); and family (socioeconomic status). The WHO Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) was used to identify maternal anxiety or depression (score > 7). Backward logistic regression analysis identified independent correlates and significant interactions. Findings Multivariate modelling showed that severe punishment was an independent correlate of comorbid internalizing and externalizing problems but was not associated with internalizing problems only. It increased the risk of externalizing problems alone only for children and adolescents not exposed to maternal anxiety or depression. Maternal anxiety or depression increased the risk only for children or adolescents not exposed to severe punishment. Conclusion Severe punishment may be related to child mental health problems, with the mechanism depending on the type of problem. Abstract: The Upper Pleistocene/Lower Holocene fossil-bearing sites of the Serra da Capivara National Park Region have yielded three cervid species: Mazama gouazoubira, M. americana and Blastocerus dichotomus, all currently living in South America, the two first in the region. A grand total of more than one hundred remains demonstrates the presence of Mazama gouazoubira in seven sites, mainly the Toca das Moendas, the Toca do Serrote do Artur, the Toca da Cima dos Pilão. This small species shows, since the Upper Pleistocene, a conspicuous tendency to reduce the average dimensions of its teeth and long bones. From the taller M. americana, only a dozen of remains were found in four sites, mainly the Sitio do Meio. In all of these it is sympatric with M. gouazoubira. It differs from this last one by its cheek teeth and its limb bones size and proportions. The oldest site where the species is known is Tarija (Bolivia, Middle Pleistocene) and it does not show any significant changes in size and proportions between recent and fossil samples. Sixteen remains of the large B. dichotomus were found in five sites, mainly the Toca das Moendas and the Toca da Barra do Antonião. The species is a rare fossil, but is frequently figured in the rock art painting of the region, where it is presently unknown. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
