This research aimed to analyze the insertion of Brazilian psychology into the context of school inclusion of people with autism spectrum disorder. To this end, an integrative review was carried out in two stages: (1) mapping of publications on ASD in different areas of psychology; (2) analysis of the approaches and modes of action adopted to promote the inclusion of autistic people in school. The review considered articles published in the SciELO, BVS-Psi and PePsic databases, in Portuguese and English, between 2013 and 2023. The searches were carried out using the Boolean descriptors and operators psychology AND autism. The results point to three perspectives and modes of action in promoting school inclusion for autistic people: adaptation and adjustment through training, inclusion and development mediated by interactions with adults, and emergence of uniqueness resulting from the deconstruction of normalizing and pathologizing practices.

BACKGROUND: The acute and chronic effects of stretching preceding exercises on strength, power and muscular endurance are still not entirely clear in the literature. OBJECTIVE: To verify the acute and chronic effects of the main types of stretching (static, dynamic, PNF, and ballistic) on muscle strength, power, and endurance. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in: PubMed, Web of Science, LILACS, Scopus, Science Direct, and CENTRAL. The methodological quality was assessed using the PEDro scale. Meta-analysis were performed using the standardized mean difference (SMD). RESULTS: 43 studies were included in the systematic review and 30 in the meta-analysis calculations. Only two studies showed high methodological quality. In general, static stretching had an impact on the potentiated the gain in muscle strength of the lower limbs in the long term (0.60 [0.20–1.00]). The acute (ES = 0.38 [0.05–0.70]) and long-term (ES = 1.04 [0.21–1.88]) dynamic stretching was able to potentiate the gain of muscle power in the lower limbs, while the acute PNF had an impact on the worsening of the muscular endurance (ES = 1.68 [0.83–2.53]). CONCLUSIONS: When the training objective is linked to acute effects, dynamic stretching should be prioritized before the main activity. For long-term effects, static and dynamic stretching have been shown to potentiate muscle strength and power gain, respectively, and are recommended in these cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fish fauna of the Tocantins River possesses many endemic species; however, it is little studied in molecular terms and is quite threatened by the construction of several hydroelectric dams. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the ichthyofauna of the Tocantins River using DNA barcoding. For this, collections were carried out in five points of this river, which resulted in the capture of 725 individuals from which partial sequences of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene were obtained for genetic analysis. A total of 443 haplotypes were recovered with the mean intraspecific K2P genetic distance of 1.82%. Altogether, 138 species were identified based on morphological criteria, which was a quantity that was much lower than that indicated by the four molecular methods (assemble species by automatic partitioning [ASAP], barcode index number [BIN], generalized mixed Yule coalescent (GMYC), and Bayesian Poisson tree processes [bPTP]) through which 152–157 molecular entities were identified. In all, 41 unique BINs were obtained based on the data generated in the BOLDSystems platform. According to the result indicated by ASAP (species delimitation approach considered the most appropriate in the present study), there was an increase of 17 molecular entities (12.32%), when compared to the number of species identified through their morphological criteria, as it can show cryptic diversity, candidates for new species, and misidentifications. There were 21 incongruities indicated between the different identification approaches for species. Therefore, it is suggested that these taxonomic problems be cautiously evaluated by experts to solve such taxonomic issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The genus Visia is reappraised based on new morphological and molecular data (rbcL and COI-5P sequences), from recently collected and previously studied materials, resulting in the need for several taxonomic changes. Based on our phylogeny and sequence divergence, the genus Visioidea gen. nov. is proposed for two samples from Brazil, forming a distinct clade that is morphologically undistinguishable from the generitype of Visia (V. cayennensis). Two lineages of Visia with high genetic divergences from other species are proposed as new species: 1) V. verviridis sp. nov. from Australia; 2) V. amazonensis sp. nov. from Brazil. Although genetically distinct, both species are morphologically very similar to V. cayennensis. A new record of V. cylindrocellularis was found in Australia, expanding the geographic distribution and the morphometric ranges for this species. The number of species currently recognized in Visia is now six, four with DNA sequence data and two identified based solely on morphology (V. longiarticulata and V. turgida). Cryptic genera within the order Batrachospermales were not recognised until recently with the proposals of Volatus, morphologically indistinct from Kumanoa, and Macrosporophycos undistinguishable from Montagnia and here a third cryptic genus Visioidea is described. Objective: The aim of the study is to determine the prevalence and factors associated with olfactory dysfunction in individuals with COVID-19 in the first 2 years of the pandemic in Brazil. Materials and Methods: This is a prevalent study involving the confirmed cases of COVID-19 recorded in the municipality between the years 2020 and 2021. Individuals symptomatic for COVID-19, with a positive laboratory result and aged 12 or older were included in this study. Measures of central tendency and dispersion were used in the description of continuous variables and frequency was used for categorical variables. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to evaluate data distribution. Results: Data from 20,669 individuals were analyzed. The prevalence of olfactory disorders was 17.9% and increased from 11.5% to 21.9% between 2020 and 2021. A female gender predominance was observed among individuals who reported anosmia, with 61.1% (n = 564) in 2020 and 61.7% (n = 1,713) in 2021. On the other hand, the median age of individuals with olfactory disorders was lower than that of the group without disorders (35 [IQR 27–46] vs. 39 [IQR 29–50]; p < 0.001). Smell disturbances were present in 18.2% (n = 3,634) of patients who recovered and in 7.1% (n = 38) of those who died. Furthermore, in 2021, a prevalence rate of 30.6% for olfactory disorders was linked to obesity as a comorbidity. Conclusion: The prevalence of olfactory disorders was lower compared to other studies, with cough and fever being negatively related to olfactory dysfunction and headache, coryza, and taste disorders being positively related. Obesity was the only associated comorbidity. Highlights of the Study: The prevalence of olfactory disorders was 17.9% and increased from 11.5% to 21.9% between 2020 and 2021. This research is qualitatively oriented and aims to analyze themes of social justice--according to the methodology proposed by the international project EduHealth--based on critical incidents in physical education classes. The incidents have been identified by six physical education teacher-researchers who produced vignettes from the situations. Three of them are Master's students from the Postgraduate Program in Physical Education at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (PPGEF-UFRN) and three are from the Professional Postgraduate Program in Physical Education in National Network at the Federal University of Ceará (ProEFUFC). Both universities are located in the Northeastern region of Brazil. Findings point to themes related to gender inequality, trans invisibility and/or homophobia, socioeconomic inequalities, reflective-critical issues about democracy and social inclusion, the struggle for social rights, bullying, religions and empathy, intellectual and physical disabilities, diversity, identity, and low self-esteem. A critical education based on social justice is essential in facing the analyzed situations. In conclusion, the notion of social justice can help to promote the knowledge that teacher-researchers mobilize to teach physical education's thematic subjects in a contextualized and engaged way. This perspective helps to understand the privileges and unjust power relations present in Brazilian society, pointing out subsidies for reflection and deepening of the teaching and learning processes. Objective: to analyze hospitalization and mortality due to essential hypertension in Brazil from 2014 to 2023. Method: ecological time series study by DATASUS on February 15, 2024. The variables age, gender, color/race, federative unit and care were statistically analyzed. Results: During the period, a total of 511,295 hospitalizations and 8,518 deaths were recorded. There was a 50.1% reduction in hospitalizations and a 43.2% reduction in deaths. Emergency care was more prevalent (93.8%). The São Paulo state stood out with 18.9% of hospitalizations and 21.1% of deaths. There was a predominance of women (58.5%) in the 60-69 age group (22.8%) and of brown color/race (42.0%). Individuals aged 80 or over had a higher mean number of days in hospital. Deaths were also more frequent in women (53.5%), but aged 80 or over (34.0%). Conclusion: there was a reduction in hospitalizations and mortality due to essential hypertension, with variations related to gender, color/race and type of care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Leishmaniases are neglected diseases with limited therapeutic options. Diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis can occur in Brazil due to Leishmania amazonensis. This study details the antileishmanial activity and cytotoxicity of complexes of sodium usnate (SAU) with lanthanide ions ([LnL3 (H2O)x] (Ln = La(III), Nd(III), Gd(III), Tb(III), Eu(III) and Sm(III); L = SAU). All lanthanide complexes were highly active and more potent than SAU against L. amazonensis promastigotes and intracellular amastigotes (Pro: IC50 < 1.50 μM; Ama: IC50 < 7.52 μM). EuL3·3H2O and NdL3·3H2O were the most selective and effective on intracellular amastigotes, with a selectivity index of approximately 7.0. In silico predictions showed no evidence of mutagenicity, tumorigenicity or irritation for all complexes. Treatment with EuL3·3H2O triggered NO release even at the lowest concentration, indicating NO production as a mechanism of action against the parasite. Incubating promastigotes with the lanthanide complexes, particularly with SmL3·4H2O and GdL3·3H2O, led to a change in the mitochondrial membrane potential, indicating the ability of these complexes to target this essential organelle. The same complexes caused cell death through cell membrane disruption, but their relationship with early or late apoptotic processes remains unclear. Background: The use of a reliable remote cognitive screening test for older adults is crucial for the diagnosis of cognitive impairment. This study aimed to translate and validate the audiovisual Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)for older adults in Brazil. Methods: One hundred and fourteen older adults were recruited from the community and demographic, functional, mood, and cognitive data were collected. Participants were classified into two groups: cognitively healthy or mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Statistical analyses were performed in order to assess the validity of the test and the cutoff score. Results: The psychometric properties of the audiovisual MoCA showed good convergent validity. The audiovisual MoCA was represented as a unifactorial adjusted model, the composite reliability value was acceptable and a cutoff point of ≥23 reached adequate sensitivity and specificity at 0.77 and 0.92, respectively. Conclusions: The translated audiovisual MoCA is a valid and reliable cognitive screening test that can be administered remotely in older adults in Brazil. The test demonstrated a great ability to discriminate older adults with MCI from cognitively healthy adults. Future studies should focus on validating the audiovisual MoCA using other target population groups in order to expand the use of this remote screening test. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to investigate the frequency and genotypic diversity of human bocavirus (HBoV) in historical fecal samples collected before 2005 in Brazil and understand its natural history in patients with diarrhea. Between 1998 and 2005, 3347 samples were tested for HBoV by RT‐PCR, with a detection rate of 5.8% (195/3347). Coinfection with norovirus (NoV) and human adenovirus (HAdV) was found in 34.9% (68/195), indicating HBoV's potential role as a causative agent of diarrheal disease. The detection rate varied over the years (p < 0.05), suggesting natural oscillatory fluctuations. HBoV was more prevalent in fall and winter, with higher positivity in children ≤5 years (p < 0.05), reinforcing that HBoV is an important pathogen in childhood diarrhea. Genotyping (32.8%; 64/195) revealed the circulation of HBoV‐1 (79.7%, 51/64), HBoV‐3 (12.5%, 8/64), HBoV‐2 (6.2%, 4/64), and the rare HBoV‐4 (1.6%, 1/64). Difference in HBoV‐1 and HBoV‐2/‐3 mono‐infections prevalence (p < 0.05), suggests a potential role of HBoV‐1 in the pathogenicity of diarrheal disease. The study highlights HBoV's lasting impact on viral gastroenteritis in Brazil and emphasizes its genotypic diversity. Recommending screening for HBoV in public health laboratories is crucial for understanding its role in gastrointestinal diseases. In the present work, cagaite (Eugenia dysenterica DC.) seed oil was studied as a potential inedible raw material for biodiesel production. The oil was extracted using a Soxhlet extractor and the fatty acids acyl esters that make up biodiesel were obtained by alkaline transesterification using sodium hydroxide. The influence of reaction parameters was also evaluated: molar ratio, time, and amount of catalyst. The conversion of fatty acids into fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), which make up biodiesel, was calculated using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1HNMR) spectra. In a 30 min reaction period, the molar ratio of oil to methanol was 1:4, resulting in a conversion of 63.57%. However, when the molar ratio was increased to 1:8, the conversion reached 81.74% during the same 30 min reaction period. After 60 min of reaction, additional increases in conversion were observed when molar ratios of 1:4, 1:6, and 1:8 were used. Under these conditions, the conversions achieved were 92.08%, 98.24%, and 98.78%, respectively. The physico‐chemical properties were evaluated and the results showed that cagaite seed oil biodiesel was similar to soybean biodiesel, which is the most commonly produced biodiesel in Brazil. Summary: The objective of this study is to verify the association between obesity and mortality in hospitalized patients with SARS–CoV–2 taking into account the Human Development Index (HDI). A search was performed in the PubMed, Virtual Health Library (Lilacs/Bireme/VHL Brazil), Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from inception to May 2022. To be eligible, studies had to have cohort or case–control designs, be conducted with hospitalized adults (≥18 years old), and evaluate mortality rates between with obesity and without obesity individuals with SARS‐CoV‐2 confirmed by laboratory tests. The analyses were performed in Stata 12.0 using relative risk (RR) as a summary measure. Heterogeneity was explored by meta‐regression and subgroup analyses considering the HDI, age, sex, and follow‐up period. Out of 912 studies screened, 49 studies were eligible for qualitative synthesis, and 33 studies were eligible for quantitative analysis, representing 42,905 patients. The mortality risk from SARS‐CoV‐2 was higher in individuals with obesity compared with without obesity individuals only in the subgroups of patients <60 years old (RR = 1.31; 95% CI 1.18–1.45, I2 = 0.0%) and living in countries with a low HDI (RR = 1.28; 95% CI 1.10–1.48, I2 = 45.4%). Alternanthera littoralis P. Beauv is a plant native to Brazil that exhibits various beneficial activities including antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antiprotozoal, anti-hyperalgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the ethanol extract of Alternanthera littoralis (EEAl) on reproductive outcomes, embryofetal development, and DNA integrity of pregnant female mice. Pregnant Swiss female mice were randomly assigned to three experimental groups (n = 10): controls were administered either 1% Tween 80 (vehicle), EEAl 100 mg/kg or EEAl 1000 mg/kg. Treatment was administered through gavage during the gestational period until day 18. On gestational days 16, 17, and 18, a peripheral blood sample from the tail vein was obtained for DNA integrity analysis (micronucleus test). After the last collection, animals were euthanized by cervical dislocation. Maternal organs and fetuses were collected, weighed, and subsequently analyzed. Reproductive outcome parameters were assessed by measurement of number of implants, live fetuses, and resorptions. Embryonic development was determined by adequacy of weight for gestational age as well as determination of external, visceral, and skeletal malformations. Data demonstrated that EEAl did not produce maternal toxicity at either dose associated with no marked alterations in any of the reproductive outcome parameters including implantation sites, live/dead fetuses ratio, fetal viability, post-implantation losses, resorptions, and resorption rate. However, EEAl 1000 group reduced embryofetal development by lowering placental weight. In addition, there was an increase in the frequency of external and skeletal malformations in the EEAl 1000 group, which could not be attributed to extract exposure as these values were within control levels. Based upon our findings, evidence indicates that the EEAl at the concentrations employed in our study may be considered safe for use during pregnancy and extracts of this plant show potential for development of phytomedicines to be used in pregnancy. Fish stocking is a common management strategy in Brazil, yet no assessment has examined its real extent and features. The present work investigated fish stocking practices in Brazil between 2010 and 2019 to characterize propagule pressure, species composition, the use of non-native species, geographical and temporal trends, environment types, and responsible agencies. Based on information disseminated on the internet, the study detected 1,155 stocking events (ca. 115 events/year). In total, ca. 56.4 million fish were stocked, with an average of ca. 90 thousand fish/event. We found events in all Brazilian regions involving 436 municipalities and 21 states. Most events occurred in the Northeast region (66.3%), which received alone ca. 41 million fish. Reservoirs were the primary target environment, and the public sector conducted most events. Fish stocking involved 63 taxa, including 14 non-native taxa and three hybrids. Considering the events that informed composition, 62.4% released non-native species, which summed 19.7 million fish. These results provide a broad overview of fish stocking practices in Brazil, and reveal that this action is widely disseminated. Its frequent use, associated with the lack of proper criteria and the illegal stocking of nonnative species, raise concerns about technical aspects, outcomes, and potential environmental impacts. Dengue virus serotype 2, genotype Cosmopolitan (DENV-2-GII), is one of the most widespread DENV strains globally. In the USA, DENV-2 epidemics have been dominated by DENV-2 genotype Asian-American (DENV-2-GIII), and the first cases of DENV-2-GII were only described in 2019, in Peru, and in 2021 in Brazil. To gain new information about the circulation of DENV-2-GII in Brazil, we sequenced 237 DENV-2 confirmed cases sampled between March 2021 and March 2023 and revealed that DENV-2-GII is already present in all geographic regions of Brazil. The phylogeographic analysis inferred that DENV-2-GII was introduced at least four times in Brazil, between May 2020 and August 2022, generating multiple clades that spread throughout the country with different success. Despite multiple introductions of DENV-2-GII, analysis of the country-wide laboratory surveillance data showed that the Brazilian dengue epidemic in 2022 was dominated by DENV-1 in most states. We hypothesize that massive circulation of DENV-2-GIII in previous years in Brazil might have created a population immune barrier against symptomatic homotypic reinfections by DENV-2-GII, leading to sustained cryptic circulation in asymptomatic cases and localized outbreaks of this new genotype. In summary, our study stresses the importance of arboviral genomic surveillance to close monitoring and better understanding the potential impact of DENV-2-GII in the coming years. Background: Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) is a common allergy in infants and can affect proper growth and development. This study verified factors associated with the evolution of the nutritional status (NS) among infants with CMPA fed with hypoallergenic formulas (HF). Methods: This is a longitudinal study of infants (n = 1036) participating on a governmental program in Brazil. Researchers assessed Nutritional status before HF treatment (T1) and after HF treatment (T2). The causality of exposure variables on the evolution of NS was verified by Multinomial Logistic Regression (MLR). Results: We observed an increase in anthropometric indexes analyzed with statistically significant results (p < 0.01). The weight/age and height/age scores showed a significant reduction in infants with nutritional deficit. The Body Mass Index (BMI) showed a decrease in the number of infants with nutritional deficit (< -2 z-score). On the other hand, there was an increase in those classified as at risk of overweight, overweight and obese. MLR showed that those who remained < 12 months in the program had a lower odds ratio (95% CI = 0.355–0.906; p = 0.018) to have inadequate NS with increasing BMI. Preterm infants were 4 times more likely (CI 95% = 1.520–10.694; p = 0.005) to have their BMI decreased and those who received nutritional counseling had a lower odds ratio (CI 95% = 0.411–0.953; p = 0.029) to maintain adequate NS. Conclusion: The program has a significant impact on the NS of infants with CMPA. The constant management and implementation of differentiated criteria according to the evolution of NS for the supply of HF is fundamental in the continuity of this public policy. Rotavirus (RVA) G8 is frequently detected in animals, but only occasionally in humans. G8 strains, however, are frequently documented in nations in Africa. Recently, an increase in G8 detection was observed outside Africa. The aims of the study were to monitor G8 infections in the Brazilian human population between 2007 and 2020, undertake the full-genotype characterization of the four G8P[4], six G8P[6] and two G8P[8] RVA strains and conduct phylogenetic analysis in order to understand their genetic diversity and evolution. A total of 12,978 specimens were screened for RVA using ELISA, PAGE, RT-PCR and Sanger sequencing. G8 genotype represented 0.6% (15/2434) of the entirely RVA-positive samples. G8P[4] comprised 33.3% (5/15), G8P[6] 46.7% (7/15) and G8P[8] 20% (3/15). All G8 strains showed a short RNA pattern. All twelve selected G8 strains displayed a DS-1-like genetic backbone. The whole-genotype analysis on a DS-1-like backbone identified four different genotype-linage constellations. According to VP7 analysis, the Brazilian G8P[8] strains with the DS-1-like backbone strains were derived from cattle and clustered with newly DS-1-like G1/G3/G9/G8P[8] strains and G2P[4] strains. Brazilian IAL-R193/2017/G8P[8] belonged to a VP1/R2.XI lineage and were grouped with bovine-like G8P[8] strains with the DS-1-like backbone strains detected in Asia. Otherwise, the Brazilian IAL-R558/2017/G8P[8] possess a "Distinct" VP1/R2 lineage never previously described and grouped apart from any of the DS-1-like reference strains. Collectively, our findings suggest that the Brazilian bovine-like G8P[8] strains with the DS-1-like backbone strains are continuously evolving and likely reassorting with local RVA strains rather than directly relating to imports from Asia. The Brazilian G8P[6]-DS-1-like strains have been reassorted with nearby co-circulating American strains of the same DS-1 genotype constellation. However, phylogenetic analyses revealed that these strains have some genetic origin from Africa. Finally, rather than being African-born, Brazilian G8P[4]-DS-1-like strains were likely imported from Europe. None of the Brazilian G8 strains examined here exhibited signs of recent zoonotic reassortment. G8 strains continued to be found in Brazil according to their intermittent and localized pattern, thus, does not suggest that a potential emergence is taking place in the country. Verminotic pneumonia caused by Parafilaroides spp. nematodes is an underreported disease in beached South American fur seals, with scant literature available on the characteristics of parafilaroidiasis, the nematode itself, as well as its occurrence in pinnipeds in Brazil. The present work aims to identify, describe and detail the histological features of the infection and molecular characteristics of verminotic pneumonia in the South American fur seal. Twenty-six specimens of Arctocephalus australis , found dead on the northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul in 2021, were analysed. These animals were identified and submitted to necropsy and histology. For the molecular identification of metastrongylids, lung fragments were subjected to DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction targeting the Internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2) gene and subsequent sequencing. In total, 12 animals presented with parasites in the lung parenchyma on histological evaluation, and only 1 showed a granulomatous lung lesion at necropsy. Microscopically, the nematodes were found mainly in the alveoli, associated with little or no inflammatory response, and they had morphological characteristics compatible with metastrongylids. Six ITS-2 gene quality sequences were obtained; after comparative analysis via BLAST, they showed similarity with sequences obtained from Parafilaroides sp. Therefore, verminotic pneumonia caused by Parafilaroides represents an important differential diagnosis of lung disease in South American fur seals found on the northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul. Background: Stroke has a deleterious impact on human health due to its high incidence, degree of disabling sequelae and mortality, constituting one of the main causes of death and disability worldwide. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of very early mobilization (VEMG) after thrombolysis in functional recovery in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Methods: The present study was an open, prospective, randomized study, with no blinded outcome, carried out in the stroke unit of a tertiary referral hospital located in Salvador-Bahia, Brazil. The primary outcome was the level of functional independence. Secondary outcomes were functional mobility, balance, complications within 7 days of hospitalization and 90 days after hospital discharge, and length of stay. Outcomes: A total of 104 patients with ischemic stroke who received thrombolytic treatment between August 2020 and July 2021 were prospectively recruited to the study. Of these, 51 patients received VEMG within 24 h of the ictus and another 53 patients receiving usual care (UCG) with mobilization 24 h after the ictus. When compared to the usual care, the VEMG group was not associated with a significant reduction in the risk of the primary outcome (relative risk [95% confidence intervals]: 0.74 [0.339–1.607]) or any of the secondary outcomes. Conclusion: In this study, the strategy of early mobilization after thrombolysis in ischemic stroke was safe, but without evidence of short-term benefit. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen associated with relevant public health issues. The aim of this study was to investigate HEV presence in free-living capybaras inhabiting urban parks in São Paulo state, Brazil. Molecular characterization of HEV positive samples was undertaken to elucidate the genetic diversity of the virus in these animals. A total of 337 fecal samples were screened for HEV using RT-qPCR and further confirmed by conventional nested RT-PCR. HEV genotype and subtype were determined using Sanger and next-generation sequencing. HEV was detected in one specimen (0.3%) and assigned as HEV-3f. The IAL-HEV_921 HEV-3f strain showed a close relationship to European swine, wild boar and human strains (90.7–93.2% nt), suggesting an interspecies transmission. Molecular epidemiology of HEV is poorly investigated in Brazil; subtype 3f has been reported in swine. This is the first report of HEV detected in capybara stool samples worldwide. Brazil is among the world's leading food producers and exporters. The opportunity arose to examine and analyse dynamics of spatiotemporal of major agricultural crop and animal commodities within Brazil. An investigation was carried out on shifts in distribution density across Brazil's different agricultural production regions between 1990 and 2015. This focused mainly on the midwest region, Brazil's main agricultural frontier in the 21st century. This process enabled an analysis of the potential areas for maintenance and expansion of food supply chains and confirmed an increase in agricultural production in country's central region. Geographical transformations were noted in the midwest region's interior and its frontier with the Amazon biome. Over the study period, geographical midpoints of some key agricultural commodities (e.g., soybean, maize) and beef cattle production shifted towards the midwest's interior, whereas milk, poultry, and pork production shifted southward. A vital issue in discussing contemporary rural areas, agricultural food production is tied to the quality of life, food supply, distribution, and consumption, as well as social, economic, and spatial inequalities. The development of science and technology applied to agriculture has implications regarding production growth and innovation targeted toward guaranteeing sustainable long-term production. The pinecone (Annona squamosa L.) is an Annonaceae that provides much appreciated fruit. However, these fruits have a limited shelf life due to their intense metabolic activity after harvest. The application of post-harvest conservation techniques, such as edible coatings, has been used to minimize the deleterious effects after the harvest of fruits, such as pinecone. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of coatings based on hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) and beeswax (BW) on the quality of pinecones stored at room temperature of 20 °C, from the local market in the city of Juazeiro, BA, Brazil. The fruits were selected for the absence of damage and sanitized by immersion in chlorinated water. The coatings were prepared by diluting the HPMC solution in deionized water at 90 °C under stirring, followed by cooling and addition of BW in different proportions, stearic acid, and glycerol. The coatings were applied to the surface of the fruits by immersion in the film-forming solution and dried at room temperature of 20 °C. The HPMC-based coatings associated with BW maintained the firmness and the whitening index of the pulp of the cones for a longer time, as well as led to lower activity of the enzymes polyphenoloxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD) during storage. The forest sector plays an important role in the circular bioeconomy due to its focus on renewable materials that can substitute fossil or greenhouse gas emissions-intensive materials, store carbon in bio-based products and provide ecosystem services. This study investigates the state of the bioeconomy in Brazil and its forest industry. Specifically, this study presents some examples of novel wood-based products being developed or manufactured in Brazil and discusses possible opportunities for the development of the country's forest sector. The pulp and paper industry plays an important role in the forest sector. It has also been showing advancements in the development of cascading uses of wood invalue-added products, such as nanocrystalline cellulose, wood-based textile fibers, lignin-based products, and chemical derivatives from tall oil. Product and business diversification through the integration of the pulp and paper industry to biorefineries could provide new opportunities. Moreover, biochemicals derived from non-wood forest products, such as resin and tannins could promote diversification and competitiveness of the Brazilian forest industry. Although some engineered wood products are still a novelty in Brazil, the market for such products will likely expand in the future following the global trends in wood construction. Animals may exploit habitat complexity in a myriad of ways, and a widespread pattern of habitat use is vertical stratification. In tropical forests, it often increases niche diversity for frugivorous birds, and it strongly influences seed dispersal and community persistence. Yet, most studies disregard intraspecific variations in the use of forest layers and their ecological and evolutionary consequences. In this study, we asked whether adult males and green individuals (females and juveniles) of a dimorphic frugivorous bird, the helmeted manakin (Antilophia galeata, Pipridae) foraged at different strata in a forest from Southeastern Brazil. We also investigated how the seasonal dynamics of fruit availability and distribution within the forest affect between‐ and within‐phenotype use of forest layers. We conducted field observations of the foraging activity of both phenotypes and found that they were mainly midstory foragers flying at similar heights in both seasons. However, adult males increased their stratum breadth and their foraging height during the wet season, when fruits were also available at higher strata, while the foraging behaviour of green individuals remained seasonally invariant. The different effects of seasonality on the phenotypes of the helmeted manakin may be a consequence of sexual competition among adult males in the wet season to secure fruits in taller plants. Altogether, our findings show that seasonality affects differently the spatial use behaviours of males and green individuals, and understanding these intraspecific differences may help us predict how species respond to environmental disturbances affecting habitat structure and frugivores assemblages. Objective: to analyze the characterization of tuberculosis cases reported in the Midwest region, in the period from 2010 to 2019. Method: ecological, longitudinal study, which used, for statistical analysis, the Microsoft Excel 2010 program (calculation of frequencies) and the Chi square test (X² ) (check if the frequencies differed). Results: a higher prevalence of tuberculosis was observed in male patients (70.8%), aged between 25-34 years (23.6%), mixed race/color (53%), urban residents (83%) and who did not have their schooling declared (28.6%). When considering epidemiological aspects, new cases (82.6%), in the pulmonary form (85.6%), with HIV-negative seropositivity (60.4%) and who had not declared smoking (51.1%) were highlighted. Conclusion: the cases of tuberculosis reported in the Midwest region are similar to those found in the literature, reinforcing that tuberculosis is a current infectious disease and its eradication still requires a lot of work and effective public policies. Bradypus variegatus, popularly known as common sloth or brown‐throated sloth, is a species with wide geographical distribution in Brazil. Expand on the literature about the species, we aimed to describe the morphology of its eye and its main annexes. For this study, six frozen specimens donated to the Animal Morphological Research Laboratory of the Federal Rural University of Amazonia were used. The specimens were fixed in a 10% aqueous solution of formaldehyde. The structures that constitute the ocular apparatus were identified and described after dissection and histological analysis using light microscopy. The bulbar conjunctiva presented a stratified cuboidal epithelium, with a considerable number of serous glands. The stroma layer and the posterior limiting lamina were found well defined in the species. The corneoscleral meshwork possessed a large opening for drainage of aqueous humour, followed by a wide retinal region, in which a layer of photoreceptors was visualized. Cones and rods could not be discriminated from each other. Microscopy of the medial angle of the eye revealed the cartilage and glands of the third eyelid, and a well‐developed lacrimal gland structure. Bradypus variegatus distinguishing features and similarities in comparison with other domestic and wild mammal and bird species already described were investigated, which expounded the limited knowledge that is presently available on the morphology of wild fauna. Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is a highly contagious viral disease commonly associated to Enteroviruses (EV). During 2018, Brazil faced massive HFMD outbreaks spread across the country. This study aimed to characterize the EV responsible for the HFMD outbreak that occurred in Paraiba State, Brazilian Northeastern region, in 2018, followed by a phylogenetic analysis to detail information on its genetic diversity. A total of 49 serum samples (one from each patient) collected from children = 15 years old, clinically diagnosed with HFMD were tested for EV using conventional RT-PCR and RT-qPCR. EV infection was confirmed in 71.4% (35/49) of samples. The mean and median ages were 1.83 years and one year old, respectively. Twenty-two EV-positive samples were successfully sequenced and classified as EV-A species; 13 samples were also identified with the CV-A6 genotype. The phylogenetic analysis (VP1 region) of three samples revealed that the detected CV-A6 strains belonged to sub-lineage D3. The CV-A6 strains detected here clustered with strains from South America, Europe and West Asia strains that were also involved in HFMD cases during the 2017-2018 seasons, in addition to the previously detected Brazilian CV-A6 strains from 2012 to 2017, suggesting a global co-circulation of a set of different CV-A6 strains introduced in the country at different times. The growing circulation of the emerging CVA6 associated with HFMD, together with the detection of more severe cases worldwide, suggests the need for a more intense surveillance system of HFMD in Brazil. In addition, this investigation was performed exclusively on serum samples, and the analysis of whole blood samples should be considered and could have shown advantages when employed in the diagnosis of enteroviral HFMD outbreaks. This study combined conventional epidemiology of human astroviruses. From 2010 to 2016, 232 stool samples from children under 5 years of age were screened using NGS and conventional RT-PCR followed by genetic analysis in order to investigate the genotypic diversity of classical human astrovirus (HAstV) circulating in Tocantins State, Brazil. HAstV was detected in 16 cases (6.9%). Seven specimens (43.7%; 7/16) were positive according RT-PCR and next-generation sequencing (NGS) to investigate the molecular to both NGS and RT-PCR. NGS and RT-PCR individually revealed six (37.5%; 6/16) and three (18.8%; 3/16) additional positive samples, respectively.
