Psidium guineense Sw. (Myrtaceae) is a shrub distributed all over South America and Brazil. Its leaves are traditionally used to treat digestive problems and infections. Several biological activities have been reported for P. guineense extracts, however phytochemical studies are scarce. The present study is on the isolation of compounds from P. guineense leaf extracts using chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques and evaluation of their antibacterial activity. Araçain, a tyrosol derivative was isolated as a natural product for the first time. Other compounds isolated were ursolic acid, a phaeophorbide and three flavonoids. The extracts were tested for their antimicrobial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae strains and they showed moderate to high antibacterial activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mesosphaerum suaveolens is a herbaceous plant native to the Caatinga, and has the ability to change the plant composition of surrounding areas, possibly through to the action of allelochemicals. In this study, the effect of M. suaveolens leaf decomposition on the germination and initial growth of two columnar cacti endemic to Brazil, Cereus jamacaru subsp. jamacaru and Pilosocereus gounellei subsp. gounellei , and the existence of autotoxicity were evaluated. The decomposing leaves of M. suaveolens negatively affected the germination and growth parameters of the two cacti, notably reducing the size and dry weight of cladodes. A reduction in photosynthetic pigment content was also observed. Furthermore, autotoxic effects were also observed. UPLC – MS of the soil revealed the presence of five diterpenes, three triterpenes, and one sugar. Considering that terpenoid compounds were the predominant components, our results suggest that they may be some of the allelochemicals used by M. suaveolens to reduce species competition. Thus, we demonstrate that M. suaveolens can negatively impact the growth and development not only of the two cacti studied, but also of the own species through autotoxicity. In areas with spontaneous presence of M. suaveolens , monitoring is recommended due to the negative impact of this plant. • Allelopathic effects of Mesosphaerum suaveolens were investigated. • Leaf decomposition negatively affected the germination and growth of the two cacti. • Leaf decomposition of Mesosphaerum suaveolens also showed autotoxicity. • Terpenoids are possibly responsible for phytotoxic effects observed. Abstract: The chemical composition of the lipophilic extracts of the inner and outer bark fractions of Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus urograndis (E. grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla) cultivated in Brazil and Eucalyptus maidenii, cultivated in Portugal was studied by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The extracts were shown to be mainly composed of triterpenic compounds (along with mono and sesquiterpenes in E. maidenii) followed smaller amounts of fatty acids, fatty alcohols, and aromatic compounds. Triterpenic acids (mainly ursolic, betulinic and oleanolic acids), are particularly abundant in outer barks representing 5.2g/kg, 5.7g/kg and 9.3g/kg in E. urograndis, E. grandis and E. maidenii outer barks, respectively. Although these compounds were found in considerably smaller amounts than those previously reported for Eucalyptus globulus, the total amounts of bark generated every year in South American pulp mills using E. urograndis and E. grandis, as well as the growth potential of E. maidenii plantations, the bark residues from these species are obvious candidates for the extraction of valuable triterpenic compounds. ACT's low levels of Plasmodium parasitemia clearance are worrisome since it is the last treatment option against P. falciparum. This scenario has led to investigations of compounds with different mechanisms of action for malaria treatment. Natural compounds like ursolic acid (UA) and betulinic acid (BA), distinguished by their activity against numerous microorganisms, including P. falciparum, have become relevant. This study evaluated the antiplasmodial activity of imidazole derivatives of UA and BA against P. falciparum in vitro. Eight molecules were obtained by semisynthesis and tested against P. falciparum strains (NF54 and CQ-resistant 106/cand isolated in Porto Velho, Brazil); 2a and 2b showed activity against NF54 and 106/cand strains with IC 50  < 10 µM. They presented high selectivity indexes (SI > 25) and showed synergism when combined with artemisinin. 2b inhibited the parasite's ring and schizont forms regardless of when the treatment began. In silico analysis presented a tight bind of 2b in the topoisomerase II-DNA complex. This study demonstrates the importance of natural derivate compounds as new candidates for malarial treatment with new mechanisms of action. The methylene chloride extract of Miconia ligustroides (DC.) Naudin (Melastomataceae), the isolated compounds ursolic and oleanolic acids and a mixture of these acids, and ursolic acid derivatives were evaluated against the following microorganisms: Bacillus cereus (ATCC 14579), Vibrio cholerae (ATCC 9458), Salmonella choleraesuis (ATCC 10708), Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 10031), and Streptococcus pneumoniae (ATCC 6305). The microdilution method was used for determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) during evaluation of the antibacterial activity. The methylene chloride extract showed no activity against the selected microorganisms. Ursolic acid was active against B. cereus, showing a MIC value of 20 microg/mL. Oleanolic acid was effective against B. cereus and S. pneumoniae with a MIC of 80 microg/mL in both cases. The mixture of triterpenes, ursolic and oleanolic acids, did not enhance the antimicrobial activity. However, the acetyl and methyl ester derivatives, prepared from ursolic acid, increased the inhibitory activity for S. pneumoniae.

Ursolic acid is a very important compound due to its biological potential as an anti-inflammatory, trypanocidal, antirheumatic, antiviral, antioxidant and antitumoral agent. This study presents the HPLC analysis of ursolic acid (UA) content in eight different Ocimum species: O. americanum L., O. basilicum L, O. basilicum var purpurascens Benth, O. basilicum var. minimum L, O. gratissimum L, O. micranthum Willd, O. selloi Benth. and O. tenuiflorum L. grown in Northeastern Brazil. In these Ocimum species, UA was detected in different yields, with O. tenuiflorum showing the highest content (2.02%). This yield is very significant when compared with other sources of UA.

The aim of this work was to use in vivo models to evaluate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of ursolic acid (UA) and oleanoic acid (OA), the major compounds isolated as an isomeric mixture from the crude methylene chloride extract of Miconia albicans aerial parts in an attempt to clarify if these compounds are responsible for the analgesic properties displayed by this plant. Ursolic acid inhibited abdominal constriction in a dose-dependent manner, and the result obtained at a content of 40 mg kg(-1) was similar to that produced by administration of acetylsalicylic acid at a content of 100 mg kg(-1). Both acids reduced the number of paw licks in the second phase of the formalin test, and both of them displayed a significant anti-inflammatory effect at a content of 40 mg kg(-1). It is noteworthy that the administration of the isolated mixture, containing 65% ursolic acid/35% oleanolic acid, did not display significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities. On the basis of the obtained results, considering that the mixture of UA and OA was poorly active, it is suggested that other compounds, rather than UA and OA, should be responsible for the evaluated activities in the crude extract, since the crude extract samples displayed good activities.

From the leaves of Ilex affinis and Ilex buxifolia, two adulterant species of "erva mate" (Ilex paraguariensis), three new triterpenoid glycosides were isolated. Affinoside 1 (3beta-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)-[2-O-acetyl-(1-->2]]-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl pomolic acid 28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester, 1) was isolated from I. affinis, while buxifolioside I (28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester of (20S)-3alpha,19alpha-dihydroxyurs-12-ene-23,28-dioic acid, 7) and buxifolioside II (28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester of (20S)-3beta,19alpha-dihydroxyurs-12-en-24,28-dioic acid, 8) were isolated from I. buxifolia. Along with these new compounds, ilexoside II (2), ursolic acid (3), 28-nor-ursolic acid (4), 3beta-O-acetylursolic acid (5), and uvaol (6) were also isolated. The observed results confirm the structural specificity of the I. paraguariensis triterpenoids and reinforce a previous proposal to detect mate adulteration by triterpenoid analysis. In addition, the in vitro antitrypanosomal activity of some Ilex triterpenoids is also reported.

Two new saponins were isolated from the leaves of Ilex psammophila. Their structure was established by chemical and spectroscopic methods as 28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosylester of 20(S)-ilexgenin A ([structure: see text]) and 28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosylester of 20(S)-3beta,19alpha,24-trihydroxyurs-12-ene-23, 28-dioic acid ([structure: see text]).

Ursolic acid from Jacaranda decurrens showed toxicity and feeding deterrency towards the greenbug Schizaphis graminum. Biological activity was determined by analyzing ursolic acid effects on the survival, reproductive index, and population growth rate of the greenbug. Survival and reproductive index decreased in direct proportion to ursolic acid content in the diet. The population growth rate decreased markedly when the aphids were fed on barley leaves sprayed with ursolic acid dissolved in DMSO, in comparison to leaves sprayed only with DMSO. The feeding behavior of the greenbug was also affected by ursolic acid. Ingestion time on diet with 0.1 mM was reduced about 30% in relation to the ingestion time on control diet.
