Little is known about the epidemiology of systemic vasculitis in South American countries. The aim of this study is to compare the prevalence of systemic vasculitides in two vasculitis referral centers from Brazil and Peru. A cross-sectional study was performed and all patients above 18 years of age, with at least 6 months of follow-up and who met classification or diagnosis criteria for the most common forms of vasculitis, were included. A total of 562 patients with systemic vasculitis were analyzed, 345 (61.4%) from Brazil and 217 (38.6%) from Peru. The frequency of Behçet's disease (37.9% vs. 1.8%; p < 0.0001), Takayasu arteritis (TAK) (25.2% vs. 6.9%; p < 0.0001), and giant cell arteritis (9.8% vs. 0.9%; p < 0.0001) was higher in the Brazilian center than the Peruvian one. On the other hand, the frequency of microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) (67.3% vs. 2.8%; p < 0.0001) and renal-limited vasculitis (2.8% vs. 0.0%; p = 0.009) was higher in the Peruvian center. No differences were found concerning other forms of vasculitis. At diagnosis, Brazilian patients with TAK, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, and MPA were younger than Peruvian patients. Epidemiologic differences in the frequency of systemic vasculitis are observed between a vasculitis referral center from Brazil and another from Peru. Key Points • Significant differences are observed regarding the epidemiologic profile of systemic vasculitis between Brazil and Peru. • MPA is the predominant form of vasculitis in Peru while BD and TAK are the most frequent forms of vasculitis in Brazil. • The age at diagnosis of TAK, MPA, and GPA was lower in Brazilian patients than in Peruvian patients. The objective of this study was to investigate barriers to appropriate mental health care in a sample of Bolivian migrants living in São Paulo and to examine the association between barriers of care and the presence of symptoms of non-psychotic psychiatric disorders in this population. Considering that treatment usually reduces symptoms, it could be hypothesized that individuals reporting more barriers to care also will report more symptoms. The sample comprised 104 individuals born in Bolivia, with Bolivian nationality and living in São Paulo for at least 30 days prior to enrolling in the study, between 18 and 80 years of age and able to read and write in Spanish or Portuguese. The symptoms of mental disorders were assessed using the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) and barriers to appropriate mental health care were evaluated using the Barriers to Assessing Care Evaluation (BACE). A multiple linear regression analysis was performed to determine the predictive effect of the BACE total score (independent variable) in the SRQ-20 score (dependent variable), including in the model, and the variables that were significantly correlated with the BACE total score or SRQ-20. Our results indicate that more than a half of the sample of Bolivian migrants living in Sao Paulo, Brazil, especially females, presented significant non-psychotic psychopathology. Individuals reporting more barriers to care, especially instrumental and attitudinal barriers, also have a higher risk of psychiatric symptoms, independently of sex, age and family income. Our results suggest that actions to increase availability of mental health services, especially culturally sensitive services, could reduce barriers to care and improve mental health among migrants. Purpose: to compare fluency in oral reading and spontaneous speech among children who stutter and who do not stutter regarding to frequency and typology of disfluencies, and speech rate. Methods: 40 participants between 8 and 11 years old of both genders, divided in two groups: experimental, composed by 20 children who stutter (CWS), and control with 20 children who do not stutter (CWNS). The data were gathered through the assessment of speech fluency in oral reading and spontaneous speech, by a Fluency Test. Results: in oral reading the groups showed statistical difference for frequency of stuttering-like disfluencies (SLDs) (p=0,038) and total of disfluencies (p=0,023), which CWS showed higher frequency. In spontaneous speech for all variables analyzed, the differences were statistically significant. Regarding the disfluencies for the reading and speech, CWS showed higher frequency. The flow of syllables and words per minute were higher for CWNS in speech, and for the CWS in the reading. Conclusion: the oral reading of CWS and CWNS was similar regarding to the percentage of other disfluencies, flow of syllables and words per minute and, the typologies of other disfluencies and stuttering-like disfluencies. However, CWS showed higher occurrence of stuttering-like disfluencies and total of disfluencies. In the spontaneous speech the groups showed differences regarding the total of disfluencies, other disfluencies and stuttering-like disfluencies and flow of syllables and words per minute. Repetition of word, part of word and sound, prolongation, block and intrusion were the typologies that occur more frequent in the CWS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study analyzed the limitations and strengths of the Directly Observed Treatment Short-Course (DOTS) for tuberculosis from the perspective of patients and healthcare providers in a Technical Health Supervision unit in the city of São Paulo, SP, Brazil. Four patients and 17 healthcare providers from nine Primary Care Units were interviewed from April to June 2006, after signing free and informed consent forms. The reports were decoded according to the speech analysis technique. The Theory of the Social Determination of the Health-Disease Process was adopted as the theoretical framework. The strengths were: establishment of bonds between healthcare providers and patients and the introduction of incentives, which promotes treatment adherence. Limitations included: restricted involvement of DOTS' healthcare providers and reconciling patients' working hours with supervision. Treatment adherence goes beyond the biological sphere and healthcare providers should acknowledge patients' needs that go beyond the supervision of medication taken. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents information on the significant legal developments during the year 2011 that took place in the regions of Caribbean and Latin America. The judicial reform and framing of new mining legislation in Bolivia and creation of new corporate entity in Brazil are discussed. Liability for unemployment insurance contributions, corporate tax obligations and reform in the administrative law of Colombia are also discussed.

The article focuses on developments related to laws across Latin America and Caribbean area during 2010. It mentions that new mandatory Pre-Court Mediation Law was enacted in Argentina in May. It informs that two laws on judicial system were approved in Bolivia, both related to judicial system. It reveals that in Brazil on July 4, Complementary Law also called as the Clean Record Law was enacted for protecting administrative probity and morality in performance of public functions.

Background: Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is characterized by episodes of thrombosis, obstetric morbidity or both, associated with persistently positive antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL). Studying the profile of a rare disease in an admixed population is important as it can provide new insights for understanding an autoimmune disease. In this sense of miscegenation, Brazil is characterized by one of the most heterogeneous populations in the world, which is the result of five centuries of interethnic crosses of people from three continents. The objective of this study was to compare the clinical and laboratory characteristics of Brazilian vs. non-Brazilian primary antiphospholipid syndrome (PAPS) patients., Methods: We classified PAPS patients into 2 groups: Brazilian PAPS patients (BPAPS) and PAPS patients from other countries (non-BPAPS). They were compared regarding demographic characteristics, criteria and non-criteria APS manifestations, antiphospholipid antibody (aPL) profile, and the adjusted Global Antiphospholipid Syndrome Score (aGAPSS)., Results: We included 415 PAPS patients (88 [21%] BPAPS and 327 [79%] non-BPAPS). Brazilian patients were significantly younger, more frequently female, sedentary, obese, non-white, and had a higher frequency of livedo (25% vs. 10%, p < 0.001), cognitive dysfunction (21% vs. 8%, p = 0.001) and seizures (16% vs. 7%, p = 0.007), and a lower frequency of thrombocytopenia (9% vs. 18%, p = 0.037). Additionally, they were more frequently positive for lupus anticoagulant (87.5% vs. 74.6%, p = 0.01), and less frequently positive to anticardiolipin (46.6% vs. 73.7%, p < 0.001) and anti-ß2-glycoprotein-I (13.6% vs. 62.7%, p < 0.001) antibodies. Triple aPL positivity was also less frequent (8% vs. 41.6%, p < 0.001) in Brazilian patients. Median aGAPSS was lower in the Brazilian group (8 vs. 10, p < 0.0001). In the multivariate analysis, BPAPS patients still presented more frequently with livedo, cognitive dysfunction and sedentary lifestyle, and less frequently with thrombocytopenia and triple positivity to aPL. They were also less often white., Conclusions: Our study suggests a specific profile of PAPS in Brazil with higher frequency of selected non-criteria manifestations and lupus anticoagulant positivity.
