On January 8th, 2023, a week after the democratically elected president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was confirmed, supporters of the former president Jair Bolsonaro outnumbered Brazil's security forces and invaded all three branches of government: Congress, the Supreme Court, and the governmental Palace in Brazil's capital, Brasilia. Rioters broke windows, vandalized offices, destroyed original paintings, and documented their actions through social media. 2 Reminiscent of January 6, 2021, this insurrection marks the greatest challenge to Brazil's democratic establishment since its transition to democracy in the late 1980s, after a decades-long military dictatorship. In a 2022 interview with Dr. Ramos, Head of Constitutional Law at Universidade de Sao Paulo, Georgetown Journal of Intenrational Affairs (GJIA) explores Brazil's dictatorial past and its implications for a January 6th-style insurrection. GJIA conducted a second interview with Dr. Ramos on February 10, 2023 (post-insurrection), exploring the impact on Brazil's political instability and providing recommendations for a stronger democratic government. Both interviews are included in this article. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
