Corporate environmental sustainability requires two complementary types of green practices—environmental protection hardware (EPH) and environmental protection software (EPS). Stakeholder greening pressures drive implementation; however, corporate responses vary, often lacking the balance and intensity of EPS and EPH needed. This paper explores the role of green human resource management (GHRM) in explaining variations in the implementation of EPH and EPS in response to stakeholders' pro‐environmental pressures. Drawing on stakeholder theory and the ability, motivation, and opportunity (AMO) framework, a mediating role is hypothesized. Empirical findings from Brazil using structural equation modeling reveal that increased green pressure from stakeholders drives the adoption of both types of green practices through a partial mediating role of GHRM that is stronger for EPH than for EPS. The value of this study lies in the consideration of EPH and EPS practices in the same model and expanding stakeholder theory on how stakeholders can improve environmental protection through GHRM. Implications are that organizations can level the field for the balanced application of EPS and EPH with a system of green human resource management practices—training, assessment, rewards, and teamwork—to channel the translation of stakeholder pressures into workplace green outcomes. Limitations, future research ideas, and policy and practice implications are detailed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

VALUE creation ,PUBLIC companies ,STAKEHOLDER theory - Abstract
Purpose: This paper investigates specific organizational capabilities related to stakeholder relationship capability and the effect of the latter on value creation. Design/methodology/approach: The authors propose and test whether organizational capabilities related to knowledge, engagement, moral and adaptation are positively related to stakeholder relationship capability. The authors then test the effect of stakeholder relationship capability on the creation of greater value for stakeholders. The study tests the hypotheses with paneled data composed of a sample of 116 publicly traded companies in Brazil for a total of 275 observations taken over three years. Findings: The findings show that there is a positive and significant relationship between knowledge, engagement, moral and adaptation capabilities and stakeholder relationship capability. Stakeholder relationship capability has been shown to have a positive and significant effect on greater value creation for stakeholders. Practical implications: Analysis of the processes and practices that serve as the basis for each capability is meaningful for managerial practices, as it offers a more detailed understanding of the routines pertaining to each capability. Practical discussions on operational procedure levels are a meaningful and attainable way for managers to apply stakeholder theory. Originality/value: The investigation of the specific capabilities enabling value creation between the company and its stakeholders contributes to the discussion of the connections between stakeholder theory and the resource-based view (RBV). The Rio 2016 Official Olympic Education Programme (ROEP), called Transforma, began in 2013 and was one of the actions to take the Olympic Games into schools and promote new education-based opportunities. The current study examines its effects by exploring the Olympic Games' impact on the development of skills, knowledge, and experiences of teachers. Data were collected through an online questionnaire (n = 702) with physical education teachers who attended the Transforma Programme. The results of a structural equation model indicate that the educational impact measured through experiences, knowledge, and skills-development contributed positively to the human development of teachers as well as to their knowledge about teaching Olympism. These findings provide event managers with useful insights on the role of teachers in their Olympic programmes, as well as ways to engage them in a wide range of initiatives both inside and outside the school context. The disaster response currently involves an increasing number of different stakeholders, and understating their wants and needs is essential to managing them. Thus, the research goal of this paper is to identify and analyze the satisfactions of the main stakeholders involved in complex relationships during the disaster response process. First, this research applies a structured review that considers 72 papers gathered from the Scopus database and details the following: 28 wants and needs from the stakeholders and the identification of similarities related to (i) the complex and extensive flow of resources; (ii) the complementary coordination required to provide resources; (iii) the desire to be considered in the response plan; and (iv) the interdependency of the flow of resources and ideas, influences and interests. Then, these findings are discussed considering a real disaster response to landslides that occurred in 2011 and a corresponding simulation that was developed in 2017 in Brazil. The analysis addresses the Military's perspective and validates the findings while also adding new insights to the topic and two new wants and needs from the stakeholders. Finally, the paper discusses the implications of the findings for academics and practitioners overseeing collaborations in stakeholder management and presents a research agenda. The study aims to analyze the agroforestry system and its eco-efficiency, mainly from regulatory mechanisms and partnerships. We chose the stakeholder theory lenses to analyze the complex scenario of the relationship among different social actors. The contexts of Brazilian and Bulgaria agroforestry systems have been selected for our case study research. Twenty-four agroforestry experts/farmers working across 24 organizations and operating in Brazil and Bulgaria have been interviewed through semi-structured interviews. As a result, a comprehensive framework was created, which illustrates the key findings from the research divided into five directions: (i) key social actors in the agroforestry system, (ii) types of partnerships and cooperation between social actors; (iii) regulatory mechanisms for the agroforestry system, (iv) challenges of working with the agroforestry system, and (v) recommendations for future agroforestry entrepreneurs. Our comprehensive framework and findings will further support agroforestry farmers and policymakers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding interactions between stakeholders and Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) are key for developing strategies that enable NPO‘s survival and growth. Quantifying, qualifying and describing these issues through a cross-sectional mixed approach allows objective identification of elements constitutive to stakeholders, and their relative dependence on NPOs. Twenty-six NPOs located in Brazil were chosen. Quantitative data were subjected to the Kruskal-Wallis test, and treatment means separated by the Dunn test (P ≤ 0.05). Using MAXQDA software, qualitative information was analyzed using a content analysis technique. Three stakeholders were deemed weakly dependent on NPOs, and another seven highly dependent and critical to an understanding of stakeholder-NPO interactions. In conclusion, the maintenance of NPO services was highly dependent upon stakeholders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper aims to empirically verify whether the development of improved relationships between higher education institutions (HEIs) and their stakeholders based on the principles of stakeholder theory creates more value. Design/methodology/approach: The methods involve a quantitative approach, with the data collection being carried out through a survey of 88 heads of HEIs in Brazil. The paper uses the Spearman's correlation coefficient to analyze the data and test the hypotheses. Findings: The findings reinforce the arguments found in the stakeholder theory literature, in which relationships are based on the following principles: knowledge and information sharing, mutual trust, involvement in the decision-makin g process and alignment of stakeholders' interests in the strategic planning process, all of which create more value for organizations. Practical implications: This study seeks to improve the knowledge of stakeholder theory in relation to HEIs. It identifies the stakeholder relationships that create the most value and have the potential to generate a sustainable competitive advantage. The results can help managers to improve their relationships with stakeholders and may encourage the implementation of practices and policies that consider stakeholders' influence on the strategic direction of HEIs. Social implications: The studies present a social contribution by evidencing the importance of the development of best practices, processes and strategies in the management of educational institutions, which are important actors in the development of society. Originality/value: The originality of this paper is that it empirically tests the principles of stakeholder theory and their relationships with value creation for organizations in the higher education context. Whilst stakeholder theory has been explored in multiples contexts, there is a lack of studies addressing stakeholder management in HEIs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CORPORATE sustainability , *LOGISTIC regression analysis , *STAKEHOLDER theory , *MARKET value , *FISCAL year - Abstract
Objective: Investigate the relationship between internationalization and corporate sustainability in companies listed in Brazil, Bolsa, Balcão (B3 S.A.). Method: The sample gathers 95 of the 100 companies listed in B3 S.A. with the highest market value, according to data extracted from Economática®. Data refer to the fiscal year 2017, being collected in November 2018, using the test of differences between means and logistic regression for quantitative analysis. Main results: The result of the test of differences between averages revealed that only companies internationalized through physical presence in other countries showed statistically significant differences regarding corporate sustainability, which was also ratified with the application of logistic regression, noting that internationalization through social capital and revenues has not shown a relationship with corporate sustainability. Thus, the research hypothesis that there is a positive relationship between internationalization and corporate sustainability in Brazil is rejected. Relevance/originality: The synergy between the two constructs - Internationalization and Business Sustainability -, evidenced in foreign research, has demonstrated the relevance of this debate. At the national level, in turn, no empirical evidence was found that dealt with the relationship between the variables studied. Theoretical/Methodological Contributions: The study of internationalization and corporate sustainability provides reflections on the pursuit of long-term value, thus allowing us to visualize the Stakeholder Theory, which holds that companies, in order to ensure long-term value, need to reconcile their interests. of the various stakeholders involved. STRATEGIC planning , *UNIVERSITY & college administration , *INFLUENCE , *UNIVERSITIES & colleges , *STAKEHOLDERS , *HIGHER education - Abstract
This article classifies and assigns degrees of influence to the stakeholders involved in the implementation of strategic planning at a Brazilian higher education institution. In order to test the stakeholder influence theory, we carried out a case study of a Brazilian university based on qualitative methods. The models of Frooman (Academy of Management Review, 24(2), 191–205, 1999) and Mitchell et al. (Academy of Management Review, 22(4), 853–886, 1997) served as the theoretical basis for assessing the stakeholders' identification and management. Findings indicate that higher education institutions focus on the internal and external stakeholders that have the power to control them. In practice, this study provides insight into the stakeholder influences that have an effect on the implementation of strategic planning in a university. Based on the findings, university managers will be able to think more strategically about the institution's objectives, taking into account the degree of influence that stakeholders have on the institution's objectives. The paper proposes a framework for corporate communication action in wicked scenarios based on stakeholder salience theory (SST). Empirical evidences was collected through a food fraud case in Brazil during 30 days after the scandal on Social Media. A qualitative content analysis was conducted to discriminate the online corporate communication strategies adopted by the two major food companies involved in the scandal. The results indicated that both firms lacked an immediate mandate to address the legitimate stakeholders' claim. This study adds the action perspective to stakeholder salience theory, providing practical guidelines for marketers in the food sector who face wicked contexts, attempting to achieve transparency and common goals along with their stakeholders. The organization's socially responsible actions integration and stakeholders' demands is an increasingly encouraged practice by the market (Calabrese, Costa & Rosati, 2016). This article looks at the perception that the professor holds on the Higher Education Institution's (HEI) socially responsible initiatives. Thus, a descriptive quantitative approach with non-probabilistic sample, accessibility and convenience was developed. The literature outlined the corporate social responsibility's (CSR) main concepts, theories applications and stakeholders. Empirical research collected data from the HEI's professors, through closed questionnaires. Descriptive analysis and multivariate statistics (cluster and factorial analysis) provided empirical evidence to the research. Results show the high concordance of professors in relation to the analysis categories: Economic, Legal, Ethical and Philanthropic, all of which are considered in this study, according to Carroll (2011). The sharpest legal dimension is given to the professors' perception. Philanthropic responsibility showed the lowest agreement, coming out to the Carroll (2011) studies, which have supported this work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Today, debates about eucalyptus plantations in Brazil are sporadic, as opposed to the past. They involve positive and negative points of view. Criticisms mostly relate to alleged environmental aspects of soil and depletion of water resources, reduction of biodiversity and, in some cases, rural exodus and impoverishment of communities surrounding large eucalyptus plantations. Both sides have arguments that are being better understood by each other thanks to science, communication and practical examples. This article deals with decision-making processes of private social investment projects, having as theoretical basis Sustainable Development, Corporate Social Responsibility, Private Social Investment and Stakeholder Engagement. A case study was conducted on an industrial eucalyptus-reforestation company with industrial purposes, present in 21 cities in the state of Bahia, Brazil. From this, it was possible to evaluate the level of engagement that the company intends to have with the communities in its area of influence and to engage them in their decision-making processes regarding private social investment projects. Indeed, the results do not show discrepancy between the perceptions of both sides. However, they point out improvements should be made in projects with communities. As a theoretical contribution, it was found that there was an image improvement in all audiences involved, and a manual of good practices was created for companies and communities. Religious and non-profit hospitals constitute a vital part of Brazil's healthcare system. Due the nature of this activity, these hospitals have a vast plurality of stakeholders and a complex process of value creation. This study explores the potential association between stakeholder management and success in voluntary donations. The theme under question is located in the area of organizational behavior and almost unexplored in the literature, so we opted for a qualitative and exploratory research. Based on documentary sources and semi-structured interviews with board chairmen, we developed a comparative study of two cases (hospitals). The theoretical framework crosses the fundamentals of Stakeholder Theory with those of Resource Dependency Theory. The study revealed that in both cases stakeholder management is still incipient and poorly structured, and consequently could not conclusively answer the research question. However, this research provides important clarification on the issue and opens new possibilities for research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose -- This paper aims to present the state of corporate citizenship in Brazil. Design/methodology/approach -- The results of a survey of Brazilian companies is used to analyze the state of corporate citizenship in Brazil. The survey was constructed using the methodology developed by Mirvis & Googins on measuring the stage of corporate citizenship, and 172 valid responses from Brazilian companies were received. Findings -- Data suggest that Brazilian companies have an advanced understanding of corporate citizenship and the strategic intention to integrate citizenship into their business. When it comes to leadership, structures, issue management, stakeholder relationships and transparency, however, their maturity in terms of citizenship stays in less advanced stages. In sum, Brazilian companies are advanced in the concept but less developed in the practice of corporate citizenship. Research limitations/implications -- The sample consists of 172 valid responses from companies in Brazil acting in various sectors and thus does not allow the determination of citizenship maturity in selected sectors. Practical implications -- The research points to a gap regarding understanding and practice in corporate citizenship in Brazil. To foster evolution of corporate citizenship, Brazilian companies are advised to work especially on leadership engagement, organizational structures, issue management, stakeholder relationships and transparency. Originality/value -- This is the first study about the maturity of corporate citizenship in Brazilian companies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the introduction of digital TV in Brazil on December 2, 2007, the managers of the electronics industry, of course, waiting for impacts in the supply chain due to the promise of strong eating of the market. According with exploratory research, qualitative and in-depth interview with the executives of the electronics industry, the research objectivist diagnose the obstacles to consolidation of digital TV in Brazil and its possible strategic changes with the emergence of a new scenario resulting from the expectations that were in the Brazilian market and its implications in terms of a new configuration of complex electronics in the stakeholder theory view. The survey results indicate that, in the perception of respondents, while sales of digital TV have grown sharply in the past two years, from the perspective of industry executives from electronics, the process is not yet consolidated, provided the expectations did not materialize and hence the impact on the supply chain regarding the impact that digital TV would cause this industry sat a level below that expected by technical factors and associated mainly to the lack of integration with stakeholders definitive represented by broadcasters and the federal government. The contribution of the research is to discuss the applicability of the theory stakeholder's theory in the telecommunications sector in it's economic, technical and political. The limitations of the work lies in the small number of subjects studied and emphasis on only one of the agents involved and analyzes the process of consolidation of Digital TV in Brazil from the perspective of the consumer electronics industry executives, so it is suggested for future research studies with other agents developers. Abstract: This study investigates the factors that drive high levels of corporate sustainability performance in an emerging country, Brazil. The level of said performance is proxied by membership of the Bovespa Corporate Sustainability Index. Using a framework combining stakeholder theory and a resource-based perspective, we examine the incentives for Brazilian listed firms to invest in corporate sustainability and develop a number of hypotheses that relate corporate sustainability performance both with operating and with financing characteristics. Our results indicate that Brazilian leading corporate sustainability performance firms are significantly larger and have a larger return on equity than their counterparts, which is consistent with previous findings for US firms. Additionally, Brazilian leading corporate sustainability performance firms also have significantly lower ownership concentration and they are more likely to have international listing status than their counterparts. Thus, our findings suggest that financing characteristics are likely to have higher significance in determining corporate sustainability performance in emerging markets, such as Brazil, than in developed countries. BUSINESS enterprises , *SOLIDARITY , *STAKEHOLDER theory , *PRIVATE universities & colleges , *CIVIL society , *CITIES & towns - Abstract
This article was based on a job - search and technical support that is being done by the process of deploying an incubator of cooperative solidarity enterprises in São Bernardo do Campo. In the context of this project aimed to study what are the relationships that are established between social actors and institutions involved, as well as what are the interests that drive these agents. The institutions participating in the project are: the City of the municipality, a private university and civil society organizations. To perform, specifically, the analysis of the dynamics of relationships and interests that arise during this process, this text was based on a literature which highlights the possibilities for use of the concepts of the social field and stakeholders organizations. These conceptual foundations were considered important to identify and describe the plot behind the empirical situation of research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The National Drug Policy (PNM) in Brazil, approved by Decret GM/MS no 3.916/1998, has presented a new paradigma of pharmaceutical care, in the area of the Health Sector. From this context, the objective was to analyze the formulation stage of the policy under the federal government regarding the actors (stakeholders) involved in this process. To analyze the results, were integrated the institutional theory to work, the model cycle analysis of public policy, stakeholder theory and concepts related to governance and decision making. Were used qualitative research method, by analyzing the content of formal documents and interviews with actors in society, academia and government. Were identified six decision-making arenas and their stakeholders in the formulation of the PNM, discussing aspects of legitimacy, power and urgency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose The aim of this paper is to describe the arena in which managers of small size Brazilian municipalities make decisions as constrained by stakeholder influence. Design/methodology/approach - Four case studies were carried out with municipalities in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The investigation was carried out using grounded theory. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews with managers and with the main stakeholders. Data were analysed using content analysis, supported by QSR N6 software. Findings - The contribution of this paper to theory is based on a description of the arena in which Brazilian municipal districts make decisions. In so doing, it endeavours to model this arena as comprised of five clusters of stakeholder concerns: limitation, collaboration, orientation, legitimacy, and inspection. The paper raises some issues that are helpful in explaining the relationship between stakeholder influences and public organisations. In other words, it helps to al el stakeholder influences and to make stakeholder influence more manageable by public organisations at the local government level. In practical terms, the paper concludes that the number of stakeholders is less important than the sort of influence they are supposed to exert upon organisations. Research limitations/implications - The limitations of this investigation relate to the features of the case study methods employed. The results show the particular situation of the State of Minas Gerais (at the southeast of Brazil) and represent the situation of small municipalities. Originality/value - There has been very little prior analysis of stakeholder influence focusing on local government. This investigation is the first with a specific focus on identifying the arena in which Brazilian municipalities make decisions and the relationship of those municipalities with stakeholders. BUSINESS models , *STAKEHOLDER theory , *STAKEHOLDERS , *EMERGING markets , *BUSINESS enterprises - Abstract
The literature on the diffusion of the circular economy (CE) rarely provides empirical evidence from emerging economies that face institutional voids and sustainability paradoxes. In contrast, drawing on stakeholder theory, in this paper we test a research framework capable of capturing the imbricated and complex relations among stakeholder pressure, barriers to and motivators of the CE, circular business models, and firms' sustainable performance. Survey-based primary data was gathered from Brazilian industrial companies which lack regulatory clarity regarding the implementation of a CE. Our research results comprise both expected and unexpected outcomes: (i) differing from other countries, the relevance of regulatory stakeholders in Brazil could not be fully confirmed, adding complexity to the topic; (ii) unexpectedly, in this research, company owners/shareholders were the most salient stakeholders; (iii) stakeholders do indeed exert influence on how firms deal with barriers to and motivators of a CE; (iv) we found that internal barriers and internal motivators were perceived as more intense than external ones, which may create organizational tensions; (v) the adoption of a CE by firms tends to improve their sustainable performance; (vi) the previous possession of ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certifications may control the way companies perceive the benefits of a CE. • The circular economy (CE) is rarely studied in emerging markets such as Brazil. • CE in Brazil faces institutional voids and sustainability paradoxes. • The relation of stakeholders, circular business models for the CE, and firms' is explored. • Research results comprise both expected and unexpected outcomes. • This research has implications for innovative business models for the CE. • BPBES is the first national-level science-policy platform to emerge inspired by IPBES • It navigates the implementation space by building boundary chains of organisations • Differently from regular scientific panels, BPBES is designed to continually update reports • Challenges include fatigue, stakeholder engagement, and fundraising • BPBES experience can inspire other national level initiatives A group of scientists created in 2015 the Brazilian Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BPBES), the first national-level initiative to emerge independently but inspired by the enterprise undertaken by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). The main goal of BPBES is to develop assessment and special reports in co-production and dialogue with governmental and non-governmental stakeholders in Brazil, but independently from governmental perusal. This paper describes BPBES's principles, design, routine practices, outputs, achievements, challenges, near-future perspectives, and costs. After three and a half years of activities, BPBES emerges as a link that connects various organisations within a boundary chain at the science-policy interface. By navigating the socioecological arena, engaging with various actors, we argue that BPBES is an emerging important player in conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystem services in Brazil. Differently from the regular scientific panel that produces assessment reports and special reports from time to time, we discuss the BPBES approach whereby such reports are due to be continuously updated by a system that combines consultation to and engagement of multiple actors, curators of specific themes, revision work, and communication to non-expert audiences. Challenges include how to avoid fatigue typical of extensive participatory processes, how to deal with the issue of representativeness of stakeholders selected, and long-term fundraising strategy. Finally, we discuss the potential relevance of other national level initiatives to facilitate on-the-ground implementation of practices and aspirations fostered by intergovernmental panels.
