Three mangroves located in southern Brazil, Carijós (CA), Rio Tavares (RT) and Itacorubi (ITA), with distinct anthropogenic influences, were assessed with regard to the presence of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). In this study, the n -alkane concentrations ranged from 1.9 μg g − 1 (CA) to 55.6 μg g − 1 (ITA) (dry weight). The carbon preference index (CPI) ranged from 2.1 to 7.9 and values for the terrestrial/aquatic ratio (TAR) were > 1. Thus, both indexes indicated the predominance of sediment of terrestrial origin, mainly comprised of higher plants. Concentrations of total PAH ranged from 6.8 ng g − 1 (RT) to 437.3 ng g − 1 (ITA). The PAH isomeric ratios indicated that these compounds originated mainly from pyrogenic sources. Nevertheless, levels of n -alkanes in the three mangroves were relatively low and they are considered typical of uncontaminated surface sediments, while the level of contamination with PAH was classified as low to moderate. A three-step sequential extraction procedure, which was based on the BCR method, was used to analyse Guanabara Bay sediment samples to evaluate the potential mobility of some metals and metalloids. Zn and Cd were found to be the most labile metals because these were recovered in the first extraction stage and were associated with the non-residual fraction of the sediment. In contrast, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Hg were the least labile metals, and 62 to 84 % of the concentrations of these metals were found in the organic residual fraction of the sediment samples. The spatial distribution of the metal concentrations in Guanabara Bay led to the identification of various sources of contamination. The continental sources, which were related to Fe and Al, were distributed in the northern and central sectors, although lower concentrations were found in the mouths of the rivers that flow into the estuarine system of Guanabara Bay. The urban emission sources are related to the discharges of the São João de Merití River, which exhibit significant levels of Ba, Cd, Ni, Zn, and Hg. The São João de Merití River and harbour activities also show a predominance of Pb and Cu. The system formed by the Iguaçu River and the Sarapuí River is mainly characterised by V and Cr. During the last decades, scholarly historical production has been foregrounded on themes featuring daily and domestic life, labor world, excluded people, social imaginary, popular culture and others. How have these changes affected the contents of History lessons given in fundamental and secondary schools? Several analyses state that a wide gap exists between scholarship and basic schooling. Current research deals with these two issues which are highly important from the historiographic perspective. Sediment bulk parameters and fatty acid biomarkers were used to investigate the relative contribution of major sources of particulate organic matter during upwelling and non-upwelling conditions, at organic enriched sites on the south-eastern Brazilian coast. The degradation state of the organic material and its implications for benthic food webs were also evaluated. Temperature and salinity values indicate the intrusion of the South Atlantic Central Water in spring with a strong influence at station 4S. C:N ratios and fatty acid biomarkers suggest that sedimentary particulate organic matter is mainly autochthonous and originated from phytoplankton, zooplankton and bacteria, with a minor terrestrial contribution. Short-chain saturated fatty acids predominated, indicating the prevalence of partially degraded detritus. An exception was station 4S, where polyunsaturated fatty acids dominated, indicating the input of labile organic matter linked to upwelling of the South Atlantic Central Water. Fatty acid concentrations and the organic carbon content of the sediments suggest that food quantity is not a limiting factor for benthic fauna. Despite the high organic background of the sediments, the sporadic inputs of labile organic matter associated with South Atlantic Central Water intrusions may produce an important impact on benthic fauna and on the biogeochemistry of the sediments. The article presents an overview about the recent tendencies on Family History in Brazil, analyzing some classical concepts as patriarchalism and other concepts such as family strategies or social network. Special attention was given to studies in the area of Historical Demography and Population History, mostly linked to the books published in the last five years using record linkage and microanalysis background.

The evaluation of occurrence, risk quotient (RQ), bioaccumulation factor (BAF), and sources of PAH was conducted in Sergipe-Poxim estuarine system. PAH distribution that ranged from 7.1 to 30.9 ng L−1 (surface water, SW), 5.4 to 19.5 ng g−1 (sediment, S), and 4.3 to 18.1 ng g−1 (oyster, O), characterized the environment with low contamination; 2-3 (SW), 5-6 (S), and 4 (O) PAH rings accounted for 54.5%, 68.7%, and 87.7%, respectively, along with naphthalene (SW), dibenzo(a , h)anthracene (S), and pyrene (O) as the prevailing compounds. PCA suggested the predominance of particular groups related to SW (LMW-PAH), S (HMW-PAH), and O (pyrene and fluoranthene). Furthermore, one sample of O presented a high PAH bioavailability as shown through the BAF, with emphasis on pyrene (BAF = 26.8). The RQ showed a low to moderate range in SW and S; hence, in-depth information about the possible toxic effect in organisms of this region is required. • Low levels of PAH were determined in three compartments from tropical estuary, Brazil. • Diagnostic ratios showed a mixture of sources, with prevalence of pyrogenic source. • PCA presented a PAH distribution in particular groups to water, sediment, and oysters. • The risk quotient showed a range from low to moderate in surface water and sediments. • PAH of 4 rings, mainly pyrene, were found due bioaccumulation in the oyster samples. Abstract: The purpose of this article is to discuss alternative sources for the Brazilian Electric System to sustain a growth rate of 4% in its economy. From this perspective, issues like the country dependence on hydraulic energy, the potential of inserting other forms of “renewable sources” and the required modulation with thermal use, preferably internal resources, are addressed. The contamination by antifouling biocide residues (booster biocides - diuron, Irgarol, chlorothalonil, dichlofluanid and DCOIT; butyltin compounds-BTs (TBT, DBT and MBT); and antifouling paint particles-APPs) was appraised in sediments of Vitoria Estuarine System (VES). Even at its historical lower (ΣBTs ≤113 ng Sn g -1 dry wt), the current environmental levels of BTs in areas with a predominance of boatyards still pose a risk to the local biota and human population. DCOIT, among booster biocides, was the most frequently detected, especially in boatyards (≤40 ng g -1 dry wt) and Vitoria Port (64 ng g -1 dry wt), while APPs were also detected mainly in sediments of boatyards (≤5,969 μg g -1 dry wt). Since levels of diuron and DCOIT in APPs were as high as 1,670,000 and 899,000 ng g -1 dry wt, respectively, they are acting as secondary sources of these antifouling biocides. High concentrations of total arsenic (As), even above the Brazilian legislative threshold for marine sediments of 70 mg kg -1 , were found in beach sands and near-shore surface sediments. Two mechanisms (anthropogenic activities and sedimentary processes in the coastal waters) are responsible for this contamination. The anthropogenic impact includes releases from metallurgical plants, phosphate fertilizer plants and gold and iron mining. In the coastal area sedimentary processes redistributed the As from the sediment into the porous structure of calcareous marine algae. These enriched calcareous algae are transported over time to the beach by wave action. As in the Brazilian coastal environment, increased As levels were also observed in other coastal environments of South America such as Rio Loa (Chile), Barbacoas Bay (Colombia) and the Southern Pampa region (Argentina). Finally, arsenic levels in fish from Brazilian coastal waters and North Sea, which is also an As-contaminated area, were compared.
