This article summarizes a social mapping project conducted by the Environmental Education, Communication and Arts Research Group from the Federal University of Mato Grosso. The primary goals of the project were to map the vulnerable social groups of Mato Grosso, and identify the social and environmental conflicts that put them in situations of risk. The conflicts and dilemmas these groups experience are typically caused by land and water disputes. In turn, the disputes can be traced to the continuance of colonialist forms of political, economic and ecological relations implicit in the prevailing model of development in the region. Supported by the reinvention and application of a new methodology for environmental education, namely the social map, the work illustrates the significance of group identities, self-narratives and interpretive frames, and discusses how social mapping might be used in land education to enable the construction of participatory forms of public policy. This paper examines some of the main theories about stigmatization, deviance, marginalization and criminalization, and submits the situation of the indigenous peoples in Mato Grosso do Sul to a brief analysis according to these theories. In first part, it deals with the sociological approaches of Goffman, Becker and Elias, who point out the reasons and effects of stigmatization, labelling and marginalization and explain elementary features of the relationship between established people and outsiders. In the second part, it discusses the phenomenon of criminalization and the selectivity the of criminal justice system from the point of view of critical criminology. Finally, it seeks to identify the labelling, stigmatization, marginalization and criminalization of indigenous people in Mato Grosso do Sul in the light of the fundamental concepts of the theses dealt with in the first two parts of the text. This article discusses the social conditions of the indigenous peoples of Brazil, with a particular focus on the quilombo people of Bahia in Southern Brazil. The author comments on the power relations among the Quilombos and examines their social structure as well as their relationship to the Brazilian government. Their attempts to receive wider recognition of their community as well as political representation within the Brazilian government are also explored. The concept of group identity both within the quilombos and in Brazil in general is also examined.

The article focuses on the social and political conditions of Indians in Brazil during its transition from colony to independent nation (1821-1850). The author considers the passive and active role of Brazil's indigenous population during the struggle for independence and comments on the history of legal, political and social relations between Indians and Europeans in Brazil since the 16th century colonization. He also makes reference to the policies of the newly independent Brazilian government regarding Indian lands and Indian political participation.
