This research note provides historical context for the creation of Brazil's labor judiciary and tells the story of an innovative partnership forged between the archive of Pernambuco's regional labor tribunal and the Federal University of Pernambuco. It also engages methodological questions about the use of these labor court cases, reviewing some of the scholarly literature based on these sources and describing some research projects under way. Pernambuco has powerful historical links to the sugarcane industry, and because the history of labor in this industry is the terrain of our work, this note pays particular attention to the relevance of labor court cases for studying Pernambuco's sugarcane region. The article discusses the experiences of sugarcane workers in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, examining two union leaders from the municipality of Vicência identified as Severino and Paulo. Este artigo descreve a perspectiva da elite Pernambucana sobre trabalho e meio ambiente na zona açucareira. Baseada numa análise de textos escritos por Joaquim Nabuco, Júlio Bello, José Lins do Rego, e Gilberto Freyre, o artigo sustenta que a elite percebia os engenhos como paisagens de trabalho, ou espaços de produção que incorporavam trabalhadores, solo, e floresta juntos numa totalidade. Formada no contexto de escravidão, esta perspectiva persistiu depois da transição para trabalho livre. O artigo examina a presença durável desta perspectiva, utilizando o conceito de habitus descrito por Pierre Bourdieu. Acostumado aos privilégios de poder, a elite tinha o hábito de mandar, e tudo nos engenhos era suscetível ao seu mando. The population structure of the only Litopenaeus species occurring in Brazilian waters, the white shrimp L. schmitti, was surveyed by screening six microsatellite loci. High diversity (HE = 0.863; average number of alleles per locus = 37.8) was found across eight geographical locations (2 degrees S to 27 degrees S). Estimates of overall FST(0.0060) were low but significantly different from zero (P < 0.05). FST pairwise estimates and amova revealed a significant discontinuity around a major biogeographical boundary, near Cabo Frio, at 23 degrees S. This separation may have been caused either by historical or on-going hydrogeographical and/or selective factors.
