EFFECT of contaminated sediments on aquatic organisms ,TERATOGENICITY testing ,FISH embryos ,BIOAVAILABILITY ,ZEBRA danio ,RESERVOIRS - Abstract
The Tietê River and its tributary Pinheiros River receive a highly complex organic and inorganic pollutants load from sanitary sewage and industrial sources, as well as agricultural and agroindustrial activities. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the embryotoxic and teratogenic effects of sediments from selected locations in the Tietê River Basin by means of the sediment contact embryo toxicity assay with Danio rerio, in order to provide a comprehensive and realistic insight into the bioavailable hazard potential of these sediment samples. Lethal and sub-lethal effects were recorded, and high embryo toxicity could be found in the samples not only in the vicinity of the megacity São Paulo (Billings reservoir and Pinheiros River samples), but also downstream (in the reservoirs Barra Bonita, Promissão and Três Irmãos). Results confirm that most toxicity is due to the discharges of the metropolitan area of São Paulo. However, they also indicate additional sources of pollutants along the river course, probably from industrial, agricultural and agroindustrial residues, which contribute to the degradation of each area. The sediment contact fish embryo test showed to be powerful tool to detect embryo toxicity in sediments, not only by being a sensitive method, but also for taking into account bioavailability. This test provides an ecological highly realistic and relevant exposure scenario, and should therefore be added in ecotoxicological sediment quality assessments. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

JOURNALISM , *LABOR supply , *LABOR market , *COMPARATIVE studies - Abstract
This study compares the history of Journalism in Portugal and Brazil and discusses the journalist's professional education and the media labor market in the global society. The aim was to analyze the following issues: a) the changes undergone by Journalism from the 20th century to the 21st century; b) the influences of gender in the journalistic work; c) the positions occupied by women and men in different sectors of the press, i.e., in the different positions in the editorial office and positions of command. The adopted method was that of literature review. The current study found that the feminization in journalism increased after its professionalization process, which started in the last century, followed by the appearance of professional courses in Brazil and Portugal. The advent of technology led to changes in the editorial office, with new positions and vehicles, such as online journalism and Internet television. All these transformations are changing the journalist's professional profile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acute cytotoxicity (neutral red assay), AhR-mediated toxicity (CYP P450 1A induction potential—EROD assay) and concentrations of PAHs were recorded in RTL-W1 cells to assess the ecotoxicological potential of sediments from reservoirs along the Tietê River and the Pinheiros River (Brazil). Almost all sediments tested induced cytotoxicity and stimulated cytochrome P450-associated EROD activity. Toxicity increases from Tietê River spring to São Paulo city region and decreases towards downstream. A closer analysis of chemical measurements of PAHs and results from bioassay revealed that the PAHs analyzed could not explain more than 7% of the EROD-inducing potencies. Results confirm that most of the toxicity is due to the discharges of the metropolitan area of São Paulo. Moreover, they indicate additional sources of pollutants along the river course, which contribute to the degradation of each reservoir. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The in vitro comet assay with the permanent fish cell line RTL-W1 and the in situ micronucleus assay using erythrocytes from indigenous tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were used to detect genotoxicity in Tietê River sediments (São Paulo, Brazil). Either test was successful in identifying site-specific differences in genotoxicity, with a high correlation between in situ and in vitro results indicating the relevance of the latter even for environmental studies. Discharges from São Paulo city have major impact on genotoxic effects by sediment-bound contaminants; however, overall genotoxicity decreases downstream. The high genotoxic burden of the Tietê River warrants measures to reduce the input of toxic effluents. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

- Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of individuals diagnosed with Fanconi anemia (FA)., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with FA patients from two Brazilian referral centers. Participants underwent a complete dental, periodontal, and oral mucosa examination, as well as assessment of resting salivary flow. The short version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire was administered. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed, followed by multivariate analysis to examine the impact of independent variables on OHRQoL., Results: The study included 20 (57.1%) males and 15 (42.9%) females, with a mean age of 18.9 years. Oral leukoplakia (OL) was found in 18 individuals. The overall OHIP-14 score was 9.9 ± 10.5. Individuals aged ≥ 16 years had higher OHIP-14 scores, indicating worse OHRQoL for physical pain (p = 0.007), psychological discomfort (p = 0.001), physical disability (p = 0.03), psychological disability (p = 0.001), handicap (p = 0.004), and overall score (p = 0.007). Females reported more negative OHRQoL than males for physical pain (p = 0.02), psychological discomfort (p = 0.03), psychological disability (p = 0.009), and overall score (p = 0.02). Individuals with OL had an overall OHIP-14 score 1.83 times higher than those without OL (95% CI: 1.02-3.28; p = 0.04). Lower salivary flow correlated with higher overall OHIP-14 scores (95% CI: 0.14-0.84; p = 0.01)., Conclusion: This study represents the first attempt to evaluate OHRQoL in individuals with FA. The presence of OL and reduced salivary flow were identified as predictors of a negative impact on OHRQoL. It is imperative to integrate patients' quality of life in the clinical treatment protocols for the FA population., (© 2024. - Abstract
A scale with robust statistical validation is essential to diagnose pain and improve decision making for analgesia. This blind, randomised, prospective and opportunist study aimed to develop an ethogram to evaluate behaviour and validate a scale to assess acute ovine postoperative pain. Elective laparoscopy was performed in 48 healthy sheep, filmed at one preoperative and three postoperative moments, before and after rescue analgesia and 24 hours after. The videos were randomised and assessed twice by four evaluators, with a one-month interval between evaluations. Statistical analysis was performed using R software and differences were considered significant when p <0.05. Based on the multiple association, a unidimensional scale was adopted. The intra- and inter-observer reliability ranged from moderate to very good (intraclass correlation coefficient ≥ 0.53). The scale presented Spearman correlations > 0.80 with the numerical, simple descriptive, and visual analogue scales, and a correlation of 0.48 with the facial expression scale. According to the mixed linear model, the scale was responsive, due to the increase and decrease in pain scores of all items after surgery and analgesic intervention, respectively. All items on the scale demonstrated an acceptable Spearman item-total correlation (0.56-0.76), except for appetite (0.25). The internal consistency was excellent (Cronbach's α = 0.81) and all items presented specificity > 0.72 and sensitivity between 0.61-0.90, except for appetite. According to the Youden index, the cut-off point was ≥ 4 out of 12, with a diagnostic uncertainty zone of 4 to 5. The area under the curve > 0.95 demonstrated the excellent discriminatory capacity of the instrument. In conclusion, the Unesp-Botucatu pain scale in sheep submitted to laparoscopy is valid, reliable, specific, sensitive, with excellent internal consistency, accuracy, discriminatory capacity, and a defined cut-off point., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.
