This study investigated the psychometric properties of the Autism Mental Status Examination (AMSE) in a Brazilian sample of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A sample of 260 children and adolescents, comprising 56 (21.5%) females and 204 (78.5%) males, was assessed. The participants were submitted to both the childhood autism rating scale (CARS-BR) and the AMSE. The CARS-BR was used to estimate ASD severity and the cutoff point on the AMSE. Spearman's correlation test was employed to determine the correlation between the AMSE and CARS-BR scales. The cutoff values were calculated using the ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curve, identifying the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV). The homogeneity of the items of the AMSE was determined using Cronbach's alpha. The AMSE exhibited good internal consistency (0.74), sensitivity (0.91) and specificity (0.98); and high correlation with the CARS-BR ([rho] = 0.91, p < 0.01). Preliminary results showed that the AMSE is a tool with good psychometric properties for ASD screening.

Introduction: This study aimed to perform a cross-cultural adaptation of the cat-owner/dog-owner relationship scales. The method involved several stages: conceptual, item, semantic, operational, measurement, and functional equivalence. Procedures included translation, synthesis of translations, back-translation, consensus on the English versions, external evaluation by the original authors, expert committee evaluation, and pre-tests. Methods: The study surveyed 234 pet owners across Brazil using a 20-item questionnaire. Data analysis utilized confirmatory factor analysis, covariance-based modeling, and multigroup analysis. Results: The study confirmed the content and construct validity of the model, demonstrating good convergent validity. Hypotheses testing revealed significant inverse relationships between Perceived Cost and Perceived Emotional Closeness, and between Perceived Cost and Pet-Owner Interactions. A positive correlation was found between Perceived Emotional Closeness and Pet-Owner Interactions, with Perceived Emotional Closeness also mediating the relationship between Perceived Cost and Pet-Owner Interactions. No significant differences were found across different pet owner groups, indicating the scale's invariance and reliability across various demographics. Discussion: The study significantly expands understanding of the complex dynamics in pet-owner relationships and emphasizes the interplay between emotional and practical factors. Objective: This study aimed to create and validate an instrument to measure pediatric residents’ knowledge about development and behavior. Methods: This was a longitudinal study with the consecutive application of questionnaires to validate an instrument of analysis. The modified Delphi technique was used for validation, which involved judges who were selected based on their expertise. Judges, who were renowned for their knowledge of the subject and willing to participate, were chosen from different states of Brazil. A convenience sample was obtained. The original questionnaire included 45 open questions divided into 13 relevant thematic axes on development and behavior. Results: After the third round using the Delphi technique, the whole questionnaire had a validity index of more than 80% on scope and relevance as well as all thematic axes, and the 44 final questions. Production systems that promote the accumulation of soil organic matter (SOM) must be implemented to maintain the sustainability of agriculture, livestock, and forestry. Since increases in MOS content contribute to improving the chemical, physical, and biological quality of the soil, as well as helping to reduce carbon emissions to mitigate climate change. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (N) stocks after the implementation of agrosilvopastoral (ASP) systems in a Cerrado-Caatinga transition zone in Brazil. Native vegetation of Cerrado-Caatinga (NV), regenerating stratum of Cerrado-Caatinga (RS), two arrangements of ASP systems cultivating Cenchrus ciliaris L. intercropped with Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. × Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. hybrid (ASP1 and ASP2), and intercropped with Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake × Eucalyptus grandis W. Mill ex Maiden hybrid (ASP3 and ASP4) were evaluated. Soil C and N stocks and the C content in the humic fractions of SOM were evaluated at 0–10, 10–20, and 20–30 cm soil depths. The introduction of ASP2, ASP3, and ASP4 systems in an area previously occupied by low productivity pasture increased and restored SOC stocks to levels found in NV, at a depth of 0–30 cm. N stocks were higher in ASP systems, regardless of the arrangement studied. As a result, the ASP systems provided accumulations that ranged from 1.0 to 4.31 Mg SOC ha−1 yr−1 and from 0.33 to 0.36 Mg N ha−1 yr−1. The carbon contents in humic fractions remained higher in NV. The hierarchical grouping and principal component analysis showed that the implementation of the ASP systems was efficient in increasing soil C and N stocks over time. In conclusion, the present study identified that integrated production systems can support land use intensification strategies based on sustainable and low-carbon agriculture in a transition area between the Cerrado and Caatinga biomes in Brazil. Background: Cattle are susceptible to chronic leptospirosis infection, that results in reduced milk production and reproductive disorders such as abortions, stillbirths, fetal malformation, and mummified fetuses, causing significant economic losses. Commercially available vaccines against leptospirosis offer limited protection to cattle because they contain only the most prevalent serovars worldwide, even though they are not prevalent in the specific region. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of specific antibodies against Leptospira serogroups, reproductive disorders and the risk factors in dairy herds from different mesoregions of Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil. Materials, Methods & Results: An epidemiological survey was conducted, and serum samples from the bovine population representative of three mesoregions (MR1, MR2, and MR3) were studied; the samples were collected and tested for leptospirosis using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) for 12 serogroups checking for the presence of agglutination. A total of 442 blood samples were collected from dairy cattle from November to December 2019 (MR1, 187; MR2, 88; and MR3, 167), including cows vaccinated with different commercial vaccines during the three months before sample collection (n = 295) and non-vaccinated against leptospirosis (n = 147). At the time of collection, an interview was conducted with the owners with questions about the health of the animals, management, habitat, feeding and reproduction. Chi-square tests univariate analysis with the SPSS® version 20.0 were performed to estimate the association of serogroup Djasiman seroreactivity with the occurrence of reproductive problems and related risk factors. The mean prevalence of antibodies against leptospires was 78.7% (MR1, 74.9 %; MR2, 84.1 %; and MR3, 80.2 %). Serogroup prevalence was different in each mesoregion evaluated and varied with vaccination status tested of the animals. The most prevalent serogroups in MR1 were Djasiman and Icterohaemorrhagiae. In MR2 and MR3, Djasiman was the most prevalent serogroup, regardless of vaccination status. Other prevalent serogroups in vaccinated animals were Icterohaemorrhagiae (MR1), Sejroe (MR2), Pomona, Sejroe, and Icterohaemorrhagiae (MR3). The other serovars tested had a prevalence of less or equal than 2%. The occurrence of reproductive problems with abortions and estrus repetition, was associated with reactivity to the serogroup Djasiman (P > 0.05). The results showed that the access of animals to flooded areas and the presence of rodents were significant risk factors, according to the literature. Discussion: The prevalence of antibodies against Leptospira in the studied areas was higher than expected, with a high prevalence of Djasiman serogroup. It is important to note that this serogroup is not present in current vaccine formulations. The presence of wetlands and rodents as risk factors in association with Djasiman is consistent with the scientific literature, since wild rodents are natural hosts, and swampy areas may allow Leptospira to survive for up to 180 days in the environment. Due to the presence and high prevalence found of the serogroup Djasiman in the experiment, new studies are being carried out to improve our knowledge about this serogroup and its possible inclusion in a commercial vaccine. His paper aims to verify differences and similarities between the meaning of work and organisational culture in the perception of Brazilian and Argentinean higher education teachers. It is an exploratory study with a quantitative approach. The participants were 354 professors from public universities, 154 from western Argentina and 200 from southern Brazil. The Meaningful Work Scale and the Brazilian Instrument for the Evaluation of Organisational Culture were used (Portuguese version) adapted or validated for the Spanish. A structural model was proposed Using partial structural equations based on multigroup analysis to compare and test the hypotheses. The perception of the meaning of work is related to cultural elements of the organisation and the experiences of the subjects configured as a social construction. The analysis identified that there are more similarities than differences in the perceptions of these professionals since of the twelve hypotheses tested, the data showed disagreement in only two of them. Purpose: Achieving professional competence requires a wide-ranging approach of preparation through education. Instructional approaches to advance proper training of future clinicians should contain an array of academic and field experiences that translate into clinical competency; this includes immersion in varied sceneries and exposure to different contexts. For that end, it is crucial to embrace the most current societal paradigms. Conclusions: This tutorial describes activities devised to promote higher education pursuits through intercontinental partnership, using recent and ongoing cooperation between two universities in different countries as a backdrop for reflections. The ultimate goal of this tutorial is to summarize collaborative efforts in order to promote similar pursuits. Introduction: Vagococcus spp. is known for its importance as a systemic and zoonotic bacterial pathogen even though it is not often reported in pigs. This is related to the pathogen misidentification due to the lack of usage of more discriminatory diagnostic techniques. Here we present the first report of Vagococcus lutrae in swine and the characterization of Vagococcus fluvialis and Vagococcus lutrae isolated from diseased animals. Methodology: Between 2012 and 2017, 11 strains with morphological characteristics similar to Streptococcus spp. were isolated from pigs presenting different clinical signs. Bacterial identification was performed by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight (MALDITOF) mass spectrometry and confirmed by 16S rRNA sequencing and biochemical profile. Strains were further genotyped by single-enzyme amplified fragment length polymorphism (SE-AFLP). Broth microdilution was used to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration of the antimicrobials of veterinary interest. Results: Ten strains were identified as V. fluvialis and one was identified as V. lutrae. The SE-AFLP analysis enabled the species differentiation with specific clustering of all V. fluvialis separately from the V. lutrae strain. Most strains presented growth in the maximum antibiotic concentration values tested for eight of the 10 analyzed antimicrobial classes. Conclusions: The observed resistance pattern can represent a problem for veterinary and producers in the treatment of diseases associated Vagococcus spp. in swine production. Vagococcus species may also be a risk for pig industry workers. The data described here will be of great value in further understanding the behavior of this pathogen in animal production. Surgical and nonsurgical techniques have been proposed to regenerate interdental papillae. The results are influenced by the morphology of the interdental space, which is the housing for the papilla. The concept of the interdental papillary "house" has been established not only to allow diagnosis of the causes of papillary loss, but also to manage and predict reconstruction of the interdental gingival tissue. The adjacent teeth in contact, involving the proximal contact, contour and shape of the teeth, course of the cementoenamel junction, interdental distance, and underlying bone crest, determine the outline of the house. Since the components are combined, an understanding of each allows adequate treatment planning involving interdisciplinary procedures. Autochthonous microbiota from artisanal cheeses is predominantly composed of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which are able to produce antimicrobial compounds, such as bacteriocins, suggesting their application in food biopreservation. Knowledge about LAB growth and bacteriocin production during food production and conservation is essential to determine their use. In this way, the study aimed at isolating bacteriocinogenic LAB from twenty-one artisanal Colonialtype cheeses obtained from the western region of Parana state, Brazil, determining the best conditions for growth and bacteriocin production (25°C, 30°C, and 37°C/24h); bacteriocin stability under different ranges of pH (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 for 2h) and temperature (60oC/2h; 80oC/2h; 121oC/15min). Their activity against different target microorganisms was also evaluated. A total of 34 LAB strains presented characteristics compatible with bacteriocin production. Most of them presented better results for bacteriocin production when cultured at 25°C and 30°C. Bacteriocins remained active against L. monocytogenes when exposed from pH 4 to 8 and a wide temperature range; some bacteriocins were even resistant to sterilization temperatures. Bacteriocins produced were able to inhibit spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms, such as L. monocytogenes, B. cereus, and P. fluorescens. Chickpea cultivation in Brazil has not yet been consolidated, and studies aiming at the adequate nutritional management for this crop are necessary. This work aimed to evaluate the production of chickpea plants (cultivar BRS Aleppo) subjected to fertilization with zinc and P doses. The experimental was completely randomized, with four replications, in a 3 x 5 factorial scheme, corresponding to three fertilization treatments with Zn (without Zn addition; 50% of Zn applied at sowing, via soil + 50% applied at flowering, via leaves; and 100% applied at sowing, via soil) and five doses of phosphorus (0, 60, 120, 180, and 240 kg ha-1 of P2O5). The 100-grain mass (M100), pod mass (MV), number of pods (NV), number of grains (NG), total grain mass (MGT), yield (PROD), dry matter of the shoot part (MSPA) and plant residues (MSRV), and agronomic efficiency (EA) were characterized. There was an isolated effect of the P doses on the M100, MGT, PROD, MSPA, and MSRV characteristics. The application of 240 kg ha-1 resulted in an increase in the production components and a maximum yield of 3,018 kg ha-1, indicating the need to adopt higher doses of P2O5 to increase chickpea production in tropical soils. The objective was to evaluate vaginal temperature as a thermoregulatory response of Nellore heifers under different microclimatic conditions. The study was conducted during one year in an experimental area located at 54°37′W, 20°27′S, and 530 m of altitude in Brazil. Twenty-four Nellore females were reared in integrated crop-livestock-forestry systems with different shading patterns. The randomized complete block experimental design was utilized with a sub subdivided plots scheme, with plot corresponding to the production systems, the subplot to the season of the year, and the sub subplot, the hours of the day. To characterize the microclimate, data regarding air and black globe temperatures, and air relative humidity were collected and from them, temperature-humidity index was calculated. Vaginal temperature was obtained by using a bottom-type temperature logger (i-button) attached to an adapted intravaginal device. The black-globe temperature explained the variation on vaginal temperature. Increases on vaginal temperature were only observed, on average, two hours after the increase of black-globe temperature. The microclimatic conditions found in the systems, resulting from the various tree densities, modify the vaginal temperature in different degrees, demonstrating that the shading effect is not always accompanied by improvements in thermal comfort. The system with intermediate density showed a better microclimatic condition and, consequently, a lower increase in vaginal temperature. The interaction between air temperature, humidity and solar radiation resulted in adverse environmental conditions, however, Nellore heifers showed good adaptation to the environment. Objective: To provide age-corrected and education-corrected norms for the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and the Memory Index Score (MoCA-MIS) in Brazil.Methods: Community-dwelling outpatients were enrolled if they had no history of neurologic or psychiatric diseases and were not taking any drugs with effects on the central nervous system. Dementia has been excluded with the Functional Activities Questionnaire. The final sample consisted of 597 cognitively healthy Brazilians aged 50 to 90 years. To account for nonlinear relationships, we have used fractional polynomials that provide a flexible parameterization for continuous variables.Results: According to the original proposed cutoff (≤25 points), 87% of our sample would be considered impaired. Even using a more conservative suggestion (≤22 points), 67% of our normative sample would be regarded as impaired. These data reinforce the need of adjusting cutoffs for schooling in populations with heterogeneous educational backgrounds. MoCA scores presented a nonlinear positive association with education tending to a plateau at higher levels (P < 0.001). On the other hand, MoCA-MIS scores presented a nonlinear negative relationship with age, with an accelerated pattern at higher age levels (P < 0.001).Conclusions: We presented normative data for the MoCA and the MoCA-MIS that will facilitate the use of the test in Brazil and, potentially, in other populations with substantial proportions of low-educated individuals. Moreover, we described a systematic approach for adjusting the effects of age and education using fractional polynomials and provided suggestions on how to account for the nonlinear relationship that is frequently encountered between demographic factors and measures of cognitive performance. Background: Shoulder subluxation is a common complication of cerebral vascular accident (stroke) and the use of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) within the rehabilitation process is extremely important. Objective: To analyze the therapeutic effects of FES in the treatment of chronic shoulder subluxation in post-stroke patients. Method: This is a case study of patients with radiologically subluxation confirmed, who were randomly divided into two groups: Control Group (CG) and Treatment Group (TG). Patients were assessed before and after treatment and at the 2-month follow-up. The assessment consisted of the modified Ashworth scale; passive goniometry; Fugl-Meyer scale; McGill pain questionnaire and evaluation of shoulder subluxation by radiography. The CG did not receive physiotherapeutic intervention; and TG underwent 20 sessions of motor kinesiotherapy and FES associated with functional exercises with a total duration of 1 hour, three times a week, for 7 weeks. The data were analyzed descriptively. Results: The mean age of CG participants was 82.5 ± 1.5 years and of the TG was 70.5 ± 13.5 years. All of them were retired, sedentary, non-smokers/alcoholics and had hemiparesis on the left side. There was an approximate increase of 10o for most joint movements of the shoulder, improvement in McGill scale scores and reduction of shoulder subluxation in TG patients. Conclusion: FES associated with functional movements was effective in reducing the degree of subluxation of the shoulder joint and decreased pain in subjectsin the chronic phase of the post-stroke. The entry of psychologists into the public health sector in Brazil is usually connected to a traditional clinical model, and, thus, marked by a lack of training for group work. A reflection on the training of psychologists for group work is essential. Aiming at contributing to this theme, the objective of this article is to discuss the training for group work in the public health sector. In particular, we aim to introduce a proposal for training in psychology in a Brazilian public university, covering a theoretical–practical module, as well as basic and professionalizing internship programmes. The study aimed to evaluate attitudes and theoretical and practical knowledge of nursing technicians about the care to patients with mental disorders. A descriptive study conducted in a Municipal Emergency room in the countryside of the state of Sao Paulo. We assessed sociodemographic information and about training, attitudes and knowledge on the identification of signs and symptoms, feelings and nursing care for people with mental disorders of 69 nursing technicians. These professionals were characterized as female, adults, with secondary and tertiary educational level. Most received theoretical content on how to identify signs and symptoms, but less than half had received information on the systematization of nursing care (SAE). Despite having much interest in the psychiatry area, the professionals perceived patients with mental disorders as unpredictable individuals in need of constant care. The objective was to evaluate binge drinking and its consequences in drug users. A quantitative approach, descriptive study developed with 140 subjects of a Psychosocial Care Center - Alcohol and Drugs. A socio-demographic information, severity of alcohol dependence scale and severity of drug use scale were applied. The sample was characterized by adult male (76.4%), single (77.1%), non Caucasian (54.3%), low level of education (57.1%) and Catholic (55.8%). They were crack users (38.6%), polydrug users (32.1%) and cocaine users (29.3%), the majority (80.7%) consisted of binge drinking users who had severe levels of alcohol dependence (93.8%). Threatening, aggression and fighting were observed in the sample. The results indicate the need to provide more intensive interventional strategies to control alcohol consumption in this vulnerable segment of population in order to minimize injuries. Purpose: to verify and identify the use of uncommon repair strategies in children with phonological disorders, relating the use of those to age and gender variables to linguistic variables such as degree of deviation, syllable structure, classification of the sounds and the position of the word. Methods: the data are taken from a database of the Department of Language and Speech studies of the Federal University of Santa Maria. We selected the data according to these criteria: diagnosis of phonological disorder, ages from 4:0 to 7:11, and the ones who were allowed to participate by signing the consent form. The results obtained at the first phonological assessment of the child were analyzed. Results: there were significant differences in the use of the uncommon repair strategies in our sample, as well as the relationship between the use of those strategies and age, mainly between the ages from 5:0 to 5:11, and the degree of deviation with more occurrences in the moderate-severe disorder. It was also obtained a significant relation between the classes of sounds, with predominant use of the fricatives. An occurrence of the unusual repair strategies in onset position was observed, being the consonantvowel the only structure found. Conclusion: it was found that the unusual repair strategies are not widely used by children with phonological disorders. In addition, it was found a significant relationship between the use of repair strategies and unusual variables, such as age, grade of phonological disorders and classes of sounds. Objective: To study the growth of children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) from 2 to 10 years of age and to assess whether growth varied from that of children without UCLP (typical children). Design: Physical growth was one of the outcome measures of a National Institutes of Health-sponsored longitudinal, prospective clinical trial conducted by the University of Florida and the University of São Paulo. Setting: Hospital of Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies, University of São Paulo (HRAC-USP), Bauru, Brazil. Main Outcome Measures: Height and weight were prospectively measured for 360 healthy children with UCLP who were nonsyndromic, belonged to median socioeconomic status, and received health care at HRAC-USP. To compare growth of children with UCLP to that of typical children, growth curves for UCLP were developed and compared with World Health Organization curves for 2006 and 2007, which were used as reference for typical children. Third-degree polynomials were used to explain the relationship of length and weight with age. Confidence limits of 95% were used for the mean curve using the statistic Z ~ N (0,1). Results: Children with UCLP from 2 to 10 years old presented height and weight growth curves similar to those of typical children for both genders. Purpose: to correlate nasalance scores and speech nasality of operated unilateral cleft lip and palate children. Methods: this prospective study involved auditory perceptual identification of nasality by three experienced speech-language pathologists who judged recorded phrases produced by 79 children (mean age of 6y5m), all speakers of Brazilian Portuguese. Nasalance measures obtained simultaneously to audio recordings were also analyzed. The speech samples included two sentences, one with [p] and another with [b] sounds. Inter-judgment agreement for the total (N=158) phrases judged by the speech-language pathologists was obtained (78.5% for [p] and 93.5% for [b]). Intrajudgment agreement for duplicated sentences was 82% for [p] and 86% for b] sounds. The speechlanguage pathologists were then instructed to judge individually speech nasality of the 178 phrases using a 4 points scale. Nasalance scores for these 158 phrases were then obtained. Mean speech nasality and nasalance scores were correlated. Results: mean values of 1.53 and 1.52 (indicative of mild hypernasality) were obtained for the [p] and [b] phrases, respectively, from perceptual judgments. Mean nasalance scores were 32% ([p] phrase) e 39% ([b] phrase). Although significant, low correlation was found between speech nasality and nasalance scores for the two investigated phrases ([p]; r= 0,31; p=0,004; [b]; r= 0,37;p=0,0007). Conclusion: mild hypernasality as identified in the speech of children with cleft palate may disfavor correlation findings between speech nasality and nasalance scores. The article presents a research study which examines the prevalence and severity of gingival recession among individuals with cleft lip and palate. It notes that the findings of the study reveal that gingival recession is similar on both genders and its prevalence and severity increased with age. The most affected teeth were premolars and molars. The study suggests that teeth with gingival recession must be treated immediately especially when they are adjacent to the cleft area.

Staphylococcus hyicus is the causative agent of porcine exudative epidermitis. This disorder affects animals in all producing countries and presents a widespread occurrence in Brazil. This study evaluated strains from a historical collection in order to detect the presence of exfoliative-toxin-encoding genes (SHETB, ExhA, ExhB, ExhC, ExhD), characterize the strains using PFGE, and determine their respective antimicrobial resistance profiles. The results obtained from the evaluation of 77 strains from 1982 to 1987 and 103 strains from 2012 reveal a significant change in resistance profiles between the two periods, especially regarding the antimicrobial classes of fluoroquinolones, amphenicols, lincosamides, and pleuromutilins. The levels of multidrug resistance observed in 2012 were significantly higher than those detected in the 1980s. It was not possible to correlate the resistance profiles and presence of genes encoding toxins with the groups obtained via PFGE. Only 10.5% of the strains were negative for exfoliative toxins, and different combinations of toxins genes were identified. The changes observed in the resistance pattern of this bacterial species over the 30-year period analyzed indicate that S. hyicus could be a useful indicator in resistance monitoring programs in swine production. In a country with animal protein production such as Brazil, the results of this study reinforce the need to establish consistent monitoring programs of antimicrobial resistance in animals, as already implemented in various countries of the world. Low back pain (LBP) mainly affects the working-age population, and few specific causes can be identified, making diagnosis difficult and rendering them nonspecific. Artificial intelligence (AI) can be a great ally for prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment plans in healthcare. To describe the development of software aimed at providing prognoses, diagnoses, and treatment suggestions for LBP with AI support, as well as to report the functionality and initial limitations through a pilot study. Fifty assessment records from a database of patients at the Physiotherapy School Clinic of the University of Gurupi-UnirG, who were treated for LBP, were analyzed. Using data mining, including information described by patients and post-processing of discovered anamnesis patterns (rules), it was possible to develop software for evaluation and intervention in this patient group. Subsequently, a pilot study was initiated with 34 patients residing in the city of Gurupi-TO to test the application's functionality. The software enabled more accurate treatments, diagnoses, and prognoses during the pilot study, directing the patient towards physiotherapeutic intervention based on the presented condition. Introduction: With the worldwide increase of severe obesity, the demand for and performance of bariatric surgery has increased. Objective: To show the importance of the group therapy approach in the research and treatment of the surgery''s psychological consequences. Method: Clinical method of research, through weekly open therapeutic groups with patients that have undergone bariatric surgery. Results: After the surgery the patients: feel empty, which leads them to search for alternative routes to give their lives meaning, some healthy, such as exercising intensely, others unhealthy, such as addictions, especially the consumption of alcohol; they are divided between the control of impulses sensation that the surgery provides and the food temptation that generates anguish, conflicts and fears of failing and gaining weight again; they experience the presence of new identity elements that arise with the weight loss and that lead to feelings of strangeness in relation to themselves and their personality; they are not stigmatized anymore and assume new social roles, with an important improvement of their self-esteem and social functioning; they may experience conflicts that are hard to handle in parental and marital relationships, especially due to jealousy and competitiveness. Conclusions: Despite the undeniable benefits that the bariatric surgery provides to the patients, psychological conflicts arise. The bariatric surgery is a procedure that causes, in addition to massive weight loss, deep changes in the patients’ psychic structure that, if well conducted in what concerns psychotherapy, lead to a significant improvement of the patient''s life quality. Background: compensatory articulation in cleft lip and palate. Purpose: to contribute with information regarding the types of compensatory articulation described in the literature and discuss the implications and contributions of clinical and instrumental evaluation of these speech productions. Conclusion: compensatory articulation deserves attention from Brazilian physicians and researchers, since that these productions occur in children and adults with cleft palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction, compromising their speech intelligibility and consequently quality of their lives. Speech-language pathologists need to improve knowledge regarding different types of compensatory articulation and also on the procedures for evaluating these productions, in order to settle preventive programs that favor phonological acquisition in children with cleft palate without developing compensatory articulation. There is a worldwide concern about a possible narrowing of the genetic base of most crops, as e.g. that of rice (Oryza sativa L.), as a result of the modern breeding practices. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate this phenomenon in the germplasm of elite paddy rice in southern Brazil, including frequently used accessions in crosses. The panel consisted of 91 accessions. Data of morphological traits, SNP markers and mineral content of husked and polished grain were analyzed by hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis. The SNP markers and hierarchical clustering proved most appropriate to assess the genetic variability. A narrowing of the genetic base of rice was confirmed, although a certain level of genetic variability was still found in the germplasm of elite paddy rice in south Brazilian rice, particularly for grain mineral content. Listeria monocytogenes is a relevant pathogen usually associated with meat and ready-to-eat products. This study aimed to assess the distribution, adhesion, virulence and antibiotic resistance of L. monocytogenes in a pork production chain. Environment, carcass and food samples (n = 894) were obtained from different steps of a pork production chain over a 6-month period (10 samplings), including from farms and the slaughterhouse (reception, slaughtering, processing, storage and end products). L. monocytogenes was detected in samples from the reception (lairage floor, 1/10), slaughtering (drains, 2/20) and cutting room stages (conveyor belts in the final packing stage – 11/20, knife – 1/40, and cutting boards – 1/20). Positive results for conveyor belts were recorded in seven consecutive samplings. L. monocytogenes isolates (n = 87) were characterized as belonging to serogroup IVb and presented positive PCR results for inlA , inlB , inlC , inlJ , hlyA , plcA , actA and iap. Isolates were selected according to the original samples (n = 31) and subjected to Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE), demonstrating their high clonal identity (98.4–100%). According to PFGE results and their original samples, isolates were selected (n = 16) and subjected to phenotypic assay to assess their adhesion potential and tested for resistance against 15 antibiotics; all tested isolates presented weak adhesion potential and were resistant to ampicillin. The present study demonstrated the persistence of L. monocytogenes in the pork processing facility, indicating the potential risk for cross-contamination with a potential virulent and resistant clone. • L. monocytogenes in the pork processing facility was confirmed as persistent. • Higher frequencies of L. monocytogenes in the cutting room when compared to other slaughter sites. • All L. monocytogenes presented weak adhesion potential but high virulence potential. • Despite the high susceptibility, it was found resistance to ampicillin, penicillin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim.
