The Cananéia-Iguape estuarine–lagoon complex (São Paulo state, Brazil) is a natural laboratory to study metal binding by humic substances (HS) in subtropical settings. This transitional environment is evolving into a freshwater environment due to water input from the Ribeira River, funneled through the Valo Grande Canal (Iguape). Past mining activities in the Ribeira River basin and maritime traffic are suspected to be potential sources of trace metals in the system. In this study, the trace metal contents of Free Humic Acids (FHA), Bound Humic Acids (BHA), and Fulvic Acids (FA) extracted from sedimentary organic matter were investigated. Moreover, the sources of HS were traced using their stable carbon isotope compositions and C/N ratios. The results suggested a mixed marine–terrestrial source of FHA, BHA, and FA. Copper and Cr were the most abundant trace metals bound to HS. On average, Cu showed concentrations of 176, 115, and 37.9 μg g−1 in FHA, BHA, and FA, respectively, whereas Cr showed average concentrations of 47.4, 86.3, and 43.9 μg g−1 in FHA, BHA, and FA, respectively. Marine FHA showed the highest binding capacity for trace metals, whereas terrestrial FA derived from the decay of mangrove organic matter showed the lowest binding capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Infectious bursal disease (IBD), also known as Gumboro disease, is a viral infection that causes mortality and immunosuppression in chickens (Gallus gallus). VP2 and VP3 are the major structural viral capsid components and are the most immunogenic proteins of IBD virus (IBDV). Reliable diagnostic tests using VP2 and VP3 produced in heterologous systems are important tools to control this infection. One advantage of an IBD diagnostic based on VP3, over those that use VP2, is that VP3 has linear epitopes, enabling its production in bacteria. Results: We tested the suitability of recombinant VP3 (rVP3) as a diagnostic reagent in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Compared with a commercial test, rVP3 ELISA showed high sensitivity and specificity as a diagnostic tool for vaccinated animals. In addition, rVP3, but not the commercial ELISA, was able to detect antibodies in nonvaccinated chickens, probably developed against circulating IBDV strains. It was possible the assessment of VP3 regions antigenicity using chicken antisera. Conclusions: The full-length recombinant VP3 can be used to assess post vaccination immunological status of chickens and its production is feasible and inexpensive. The evaluation of VP3 regions as candidates for general use in the diagnosis of IBD in chickens should be conducted with caution. The study investigated the genetic relationship of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolated from inpatients during 2008-2011 from 11 Brazilian states. Antimicrobial susceptibility profile was determined by disc diffusion method and Etest. Polymerase chain reaction was applied for carbapenemase genes, and IS Aba1 . Isolates were subjected to pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) for molecular typing. Most of the isolates showed high resistance rates to antibiotics tested. The bla OXA-51-like gene was found in all isolates, and 146 (94.2%) isolates were positive for bla OXA-23-like . In the most OXA-23-producing isolates, the bla OXA-23-like gene was accompanied by IS Aba1 . A total of 146 OXA-23-producing isolates were clustered into 28 genotypes by PFGE. Molecular analysis by MLST identified 13 sequence types (STs). The most prevalent PFGE profiles were designated as ST15 (CC15), ST1 (CC1), and ST79 (CC79). Endemic pemphigus foliaceus (EPF) is a blistering skin disease characterized by autoantibodies against the desmosomal protein desmoglein 1. Genetic and environmental factors influence its pathogenesis. A total of 128 patients and 402 controls from an ethnically admixed Brazilian population were analyzed for associations by allele and genotype with HLA-DRB1. The alleles DRB1[sup *]0101, [sup *]0102, [sup *]0103, [sup *]0404, [sup *]0406, [sup *]0410, [sup *]1406 and [sup *]1601 are significantly more frequent among patients, while DRB1[sup *]0301, [sup *]0701, [sup *]0801, [sup *]1101, [sup *]1104 and [sup *]1402 are negatively associated to EPF. Results of association analysis with protein motifs composed of polymorphic amino-acid residues do not add much to comprehension of the molecular basis of the HLA-DRB1/EPF associations. Interactions between susceptible (SU), protective (PR) and neutral (NE) alleles clearly deviate from the codominant model. Protection is dominant, since the PR/NE and PR/PR genotypes are both equally (P = 0.95) and strongly protective (odds ratio OR= 0.07 and 0.05, respectively; P< 10[sup -6] for both). The SU/SU genotype confers a higher (P = 0.012) risk than genotype SU/NE (OR = 8.7 and 4.0; P< 10[sup -6] for both), an evidence of a semi-dominant effect of SU alleles relative to NE alleles. The OR for the SU/PR genotype (statistically close to 1) is consistent with semi-dominance between PR and SU alleles. The 30th meeting of the Brazilian Society for Virology (SBV) was held, for the first time in its 30 years of existence, in Cuiabá, the capital of Mato Grosso State, Central Western Brazil, a tropical region between the three richest biomes in the world: Amazon Florest, Cerrado and Pantanal. In recent years, the field of virology has been built in the State. The aim of this report is to support participants and virologists to receive the most up-to-date information about the meeting, which occurred from 16 to 19 October 2019. National and international speakers gave SBV the opportunity to learn about their experience on their virology fields, sharing recent scientific findings, compiling conferences, round table presentations and work presentations in oral and poster sessions. The meeting held over 300 attendants, who were also involved on oral and poster presentations, showing a great variety of recent unpublished studies on environmental, basic, animal, human, plant and invertebrate virology. In addition, SBV offered the Helio Gelli Pereira award for the best research studies in each field presented during the meeting. The 30th meeting of SBV was very productive and has also encouraged scientific partnership and collaboration among virologists worldwide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Ensuring optimal access to radiation therapy (RT) facilities is challenging for many countries. External beam RT and brachytherapy (BCT) are required to treat advanced cervical cancer. In this analysis, we evaluated the system-level capacity of BCT in Brazil and its relationship with access to complete cervix cancer radiation treatment with both external beam RT and BCT.Methods and Materials: We used official government reports to compile data on BCT and linear accelerator (LINAC) numbers, geographic distribution and coverage, cervical cancer annual incidence, and prevalence in Brazil. We also evaluated changes in national BCT capacity between 2001 and 2021. The 2020 relationship between cervical cancer cases for RT per BCT unit, LINAC per BCT unit, and the LINAC supply for each Brazilian state and region were evaluated. For comparison, the LINAC per BCT unit ratio in Brazil was compared with Europe using International Atomic Energy Agency data.Results: Eighty-five percent (23/27) of Brazilian states have at least 1 BCT unit; nationally, there are 117 cervical cancer cases for RT per BCT unit. Compared with the benchmark of 200 cervical cancer cases per BCT device per year, there are enough BCT units to fill capacity in Brazil nationally and regionally. The ratio of total cervix cancer cases per BCT unit decreased substantially over time from 142 in 2013 to 117 in 2021 (P < .0001). Nationally, there are 252 LINAC units in the public system with a ratio of 1985 new cancer cases/LINAC. Brazilian regions have a LINAC shortage ranging from 15 to 141 units. There were 2.55 LINACs per BCT unit in Brazil, compared with 3.25 in Europe (P = .012).Conclusions: Over 20 years, BCT capacity in Brazil has increased to meet the cervical cancer demand. However, the LINAC shortage has persisted over the decades, affecting access to complete treatment and possibly the oncological outcomes. Background: Similarly to several other upper-middle-income countries, there is a major shortfall in radiotherapy services for the treatment of cancer in Brazil. In this study, we developed the linear accelerator (LINAC) shortage index to assess the LINAC shortage and support the prioritisation of new LINAC distribution in Brazil.Methods: This cross-sectional, population-based study used data from the National Cancer Institute 2020 Cancer estimates, the Ministry of Health 2019 radiotherapy census, the Minister of Health radiotherapy expansion programme progress reports, and the Fundação Oncocentro de São Paulo public database of the Cancer Hospital Registry of the State of São Paulo to calculate the LINAC shortage index. Data collected were number of new cancer cases in Brazil, number of LINACs per region and state, number of cancer cases treated with radiotherapy, patient state of residence, and radiotherapy treatment centre and location. National, regional, and state-level data were collected for analysis. LINAC numbers, cancer incidence, geographical distribution, and radiotherapy needs were estimated. A LINAC shortage index was calculated as a relative measure of LINAC demand compared with supply based on number of new cancer cases, number of patients requiring radiotherapy, and the number of LINCAS in the region or state. We then built a prioritisation framework using the LINAC shortage index, cancer incidence, and geographical factors. Finally, using patient-level public cancer registry data from the Fundação Oncocentro de São Paulo and Google maps, we estimated the geospatial distance travelled by patients with cancer from their state of residence to radiotherapy treatment in São Paulo from 2005-14. Non-parametric statistics were used for analysis.Findings: Data were collected between Feb 2 and Dec 31, 2021. In 2020, there were 625 370 new cancer cases in Brazil and 252 LINAC machines. The number of LINACs was inadequate in all Brazilian regions, with a national LINAC shortage index of 221 (ie, 121% less than the required radiotherapy capacity). The LINAC shortage index was higher in the midwest (326), north (313), and northeast (237) regions, than the southeast (210) and south (192) regions. Four states (Tocantins, Acre, Amapá, and Roraima) in the north region were ranked first on the prioritisation rank due to no availability of LINACs. There was an association between LINAC shortage index and the number of patients who travelled to receive radiotherapy (p<0·0001). Patients living in the midwest (793 km), north (2835 km), and northeast (2415 km) regions travelled significantly longer average distances to receive radiotherapy treatment in São Paulo than patients living in the southeast or south regions (p=0·032). The reduced number of LINACs in these regions was associated with longer distance travelled (p=0·032).Interpretation: There is substantial discordance between distribution of cancer cases and LINAC availability in Brazil. We developed a tool using the LINACs shortage index to help prioritise the development of radiotherapy infrastructure across Brazil; this approach might also be useful in other health systems.Funding: None. Infections due to multidrug resistant Gram-negative pathogens are of great concern worldwide, as they are frequently associated with high mortality and morbidity rates. The occurrence of Pseudomonas spp. producing Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemases (KPCs) imposes a great challenge through treatment course of bloodstream infections (BSIs). Pseudomonas putida has been recognized as an emerging pathogen of healthcare associated infections (HAIs). Therefore, we aimed to report a case of a non-fatal case of peripheral line associated BSI (PLA-BSI) in an immunocompromised host due to P. putida harboring blaKPC-2 gene in Brazil. A P. putida isolate was recovered from a blood culture of a 72-year-old man admitted at a University Hospital, identified by BD Phoenix? 100 (Becton, Dickinson and Company), causing PLA-BSI. The species identification was confirmed by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and resistance to carbapenems were confirmed by Epsilometer test (E-test®). Additionally, the presence of important carbapenemases genes (blaKPC, blaNDM, blaOXA-48-like, blaSPM, blaIMP, blaVIM) was investigated by Polymerase Chain Reaction. The bacterial isolate was confirmed as meropenem resistant P. putida harboring blaKPC-2 gene. Thereofre, these fidings suggest that P. putida can work as a reservoir for resistance genes as this bacterium has the ability to disseminate through water-fluids inside hospital and community settings. Moreover, this paper highlights that a frequent and worldwide disseminated mechanism of resistance (blaKPC-2) is currently occurring among uncommon agents of BSI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
