Small-scale artisanal fisheries perform great economic, social, cultural, and ecological roles worldwide. For fishers in adverse scenarios, resorting to alternatives such sustainable tourism is widely proposed. In this study, we investigate the long-term sustainability (1998–2020) of a small-scale artisanal fishery in Northeast Brazil, where transformations including intense coastal development, the establishment of a marine protected area, and the expansion of tourism occurred in addition to the region's economic growth and the global trend of technological advancements. This study aims to understand how this fishery has changed over the last two decades while investigating a range of possible threats for its survival. Results demonstrated the impacts of technological innovation on fishing practices, such as the use of spearguns and small outboard motors; an increase in opportunistic fishing associated with a growing coastal population; fading of certain traditional fishing practices that often require fishers with greater experience; a shift for a fishery made up of more opportunistic amateur fishers, as artisanal, small-scale fishers switched to other income sources such as tourism. Although there are benefits from those transformations, which include the possibility of an alternative source of income and the use of technology, fisheries traditions have been affected negatively in terms of social and cultural aspects, and traditional fishing communities are left vulnerable in the absence of national fishery monitoring programs, reliable fishing data, and institutional instability. Local initiatives and empowerment of traditional fishing communities to strengthen fisher identity and participation in fisheries policy decision-making should be strongly encouraged. Health risks faced by peasant farmers may vary depending on the type of agriculture they practice. This study examined the association between suicide ideation and exposure to pesticides by comparing two groups of peasant farmers of both sexes living in the semi-arid region of the north of Minas Gerais, Brazil: exposed to pesticides and adopting agroecological practices without the use of pesticides. Group participants were selected using convenience sampling and data was collected using a previously validated questionnaire administered through face-to-face interviews. Bivariate analysis was performed, followed by logistic regression. A total of 547 peasant farmers were interviewed (311 in the group exposed to pesticides and 236 in the group adopting agroecological practices). Respondents from the group exposed to pesticides were more likely to report suicidal ideation (OR=2.30; 95%CI 1.16-4.56), harmful alcohol consumption (OR=2.30; 95%CI 1.18-4.48), and lifetime acute pesticide poisoning (OR=8.58; 95%CI 2.98-24.72). The findings suggest that agricultural practices that lead to chronic pesticide exposure are associated with a greater likelihood of suicide ideation, regardless of previous episodes of acute pesticide poisoning or harmful alcohol consumption. Biodiversity in estuarine ecosystems suffers from the impact of environmental changes and human activities. This mainly involves changes in temperature, salinity, pollution, habitat degradation or loss and fishing activities. The diversity of species communities is traditionally assessed on the basis of their species richness and composition. However, there is growing interest in taking into account complementary components dealing with species differences (e.g. taxonomic relatedness). In spite of their social, ecological and economic importance, the diversity of tropical estuarine fish assemblages has rarely been monitored by means of a multi-component approach under different human pressure and environmental conditions. We analysed the diversity of exploited fish communities (both target and non-target species) sampled during scientific surveys within four estuarine complexes in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil: Itapissuma, Suape, Sirinhaém, and Rio Formoso. A total of 122 species were collected within 34 samples. Overall, diversity indices and species models fitting dominance-evenness profiles mainly revealed differences between assemblages from Itapissuma, being the largest estuary with wide areas of mangrove, and the other estuaries. While assemblages from Itapissuma generally encompassed more species and individuals than the other estuaries, species were more closely related from a taxonomic point of view. In addition, a Double Principal Coordinate Analysis (DPCoA) established a typology of assemblages, useful for management purposes, and linked to particular fish families: it highlighted differences between Itapissuma, Suape, Sirinhaém and Rio Formoso. This method combines matrices of species abundances and differences (here taxonomic distances according to the Linnean classification). It was particularly accurate with a first factorial plane explaining 73% of the total inertia, while only 17% was achieved by a traditional Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Overall, this study provides an assessment of the state of fish assemblage diversity in Pernambuco estuaries where contrasted human and environmental conditions occur. It underscores the accuracy of using a multi-component diversity approach, with a multivariate analysis that is not yet widely used, for monitoring the diversity of estuaries for ecosystem-based fisheries management purposes. This study aimed at assessing the prevalence of soft tissue oral manifestations in children during early childhood, according to age group, gender, and site in the oral cavity, and at correlating these oral manifestations with systemic alterations. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 586 children from 0 to 3 years of age (12.4 ± 11.8 months), 316 (53.9%) male and 270 (46.1%) female, in the city of Mauá, SP, Brazil. Examination was performed by a single examiner (Kappa Index = 0.90) according to World Health Organization criteria (WHO, 1997).The prevalence of oral manifestations in the soft tissues of children during early childhood was 34.8%. The age group showing statistical significance was 0-1 months old (56.4%). Epstein's pearls were significantly present (43.2%) in 0-1-month-old babies, and gingivitis in 12-24-month-olds (15.9%). The palate was the most affected region (16.7%). Infectious alterations were the most prevalent systemic alteration (20%). An association was observed between the presence of systemic alterations and the occurrence of oral manifestations. The prevalence of oral manifestations was 34.8%, regardless of gender, and was manifested mostly in 0-1-month-old babies.
