Product design pedagogical approaches require a specific mix of competences that demand multiplicity of perspectives, hybrid knowledge that exceeds professional field silos, and continuous problem reformulations. To do this, design studio education follows many traditions, among which is design critique. Design critique is believed to provide students with the ability to reframe design problems, but it can also lead to misunderstandings. The necessity of this approach is put into question by assessing the experiences of a group of students in an intensive course structured for interdisciplinary work, intercultural teams, and projects based on challenges from practice, where the critique was not part of the pedagogical program. The course was conducted over four consecutive weeks and supported a hands-on approach based on an interdisciplinary work between the areas of product design and occupational therapy, with the participation of Brazilian and Norwegian bachelor students and professors. Students responded to questionnaires prior to and at the end of the course that addressed their expectations of and experiences in the course. A qualitative analysis of the students' responses was carried out based on content analysis. The joint work with occupational therapy students and professionals, as well as the opportunity to develop projects that targeted demands from people with disabilities, were shown to be factors that contributed to students' engagement in the course and overall gain of knowledge. The experiences reported here indicate that the phenomenological approach to the design studio, which focuses on providing an immersive environment, deserves more attention from educators, and that design critique is not necessarily a crucial ingredient in design education.

Accelerated technological innovation induces disruptions in society and education. It results in both threats to and opportunities for the way the society learns and works. This case study examined the phenomenon of learning in a disruptive environment. The chosen typical case of a disruptive learning environment was comprised of multistable technology and multiple cross-disciplinary, stakeholders. To reveal how inexpert stakeholders cope with technological barriers, the study examined design studio education as a research site. There, groups of design students used 3D printing to develop assistive technologies together with patients and therapists. The empirical data collected on site was analyzed through qualitative content analysis and postphenomenological concepts. The study showed how new multistable technologies impose relational, fluid models of learning on site by revealing mediations between technology and humans. This new perspective on learning in disruptive environments informs practical sustainable pedagogical practices and theoretical approach to learning for resilience by expending vocabulary concerning technological education. It also proposes altered priorities for formal education. Instead of solely focusing on the knowledge content or learners' development, formal education should also take into account learners relations with their social and technological environment.

Knowledge of how the different types of sedentary behaviors (SB) are associated with functional limitations can guide professionals who work with older adults on better recommendations about the amount of daily time that should be encouraged in each type of SB. The objective was to estimate the associations between two SB typologies (SB television [TV] and SB computer/internet) and the presence of handgrip strength, lower limb strength, gait speed, and balance limitations in Brazilian community-dwelling older adults. This is a cross-sectional study with 1,298 community-dwelling older adults (≥60 years). SB was assessed by self-reporting daily time spent watching TV or using computer/internet (categorized into <2, 3–4, and ≥5 hr/day). Outcomes were handgrip strength, lower limb strength, gait speed, and balance limitations considering referenced cutoff points. Older adults in SB TV ≥5 hr/day had 1.75 (95% confidence interval [CI] [1.07, 2.86]) and 1.88 (95% CI [1.02, 3.46]) times more chances of handgrip strength and gait speed limitations, respectively. On the other hand, those who spent 3–4 and ≥5 hr/day in SB computer/internet had 0.45 (95% CI [0.20, 0.99]) and 0.37 (95% CI [0.15, 0.93]) had less chances of lower limb strength and balance limitations, respectively. This study aimed to examine the relationship between Walk Score index with walking to commuting, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and screen time in older adults. Georeferenced addresses were entered into the Walk Score platform. Walking to commute and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and categorized according to the World Health Organization recommendations. Screen time was analyzed through self-reported time watching television/being on the computer. We used binary logistic regression to estimate the association between variables. Older adults who lived in places with higher Walk Score had a higher prevalence of walking to commuting (odds ratio = 1.73; 95% confidence interval [1.18, 2.55]) and engaging in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (odds ratio = 1.76; 95% confidence interval [1.05, 2.98]). A relationship also was observed between higher Walk Score and more time in screen time (odds ratio = 1.67; 95% confidence interval [1.19, 2.34]). The results showed that residing in a more walkable neighborhood increased the chances of the older adults spending 3 hr or more in front of a screen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is undeniable that digital technologies have helped in the creation of a new way of sharing knowledge. This is particularly pertinent in the area of English language education if seen as a way of enhancing connectivity and empowering individuals to promote positive changes in society. Bearing in mind that educational institutions worldwide have gradually incorporated successful innovative practices into their teaching lessons, the present paper aims to address the topic of Education 3.0 and the use of technological tools for EFL classes in a school in the south of Brazil. It reports how technology has been incorporated into the classroom to achieve interdisciplinary practices and discuss whether it has contributed to students' learning and linguistic competence. Regarding applicability, the paper brings some examples of technological tools and current existing projects, using different types of technologies, such as Osmo, smartphones, QR codes, apps and the like. Regarding evaluation of language improvement, it seems that these technological tools have mainly fostered students' listening and speaking abilities, which can be seen through positive students' results obtained through Oxford placement tests. Some considerations about the limitations of this study are also made for further improvements.

This study described the clustering patterns of moderate to vigorous physical activity and sedentary time (ST) according to handgrip strength and investigated the association between identified clusters of fat and lean mass in older adults from southern Brazil. Objective measures were used for moderate to vigorous physical activity, ST, and body composition outcomes. Two-step cluster and linear regression analyses were conducted according to handgrip strength. Three clusters were identified: all-day sitters, sitters, and active sitters. The prevalence of clusters in the low-strength group was 58.2%, 22.8%, and 19.0%, respectively, while the prevalence of clusters in the high-strength group was 42.1%, 34.8%, and 23.1%, respectively. All-day sitters had 2.6% more fat mass than active sitters with low strength. High levels of ST characterized all cluster profiles; low strength, lack of moderate to vigorous physical activity, and high ST levels among older adults may indicate a subpopulation at a greater risk of overweight and obesity-related diseases. Africanized bees have spread across the Americas since 1956 and consequently resulted in human and animal deaths attributed to massive attacks related to exposure from Argentina to the USA. In Brazil, more than 100,000 accidents were registered in the last 5 years with a total of 303 deaths. To treat such massive attacks, Brazilian researchers developed the first specific antivenom against Africanized honey bee sting exposure. This unique product, the first of its kind in the world, has been safely tested in 20 patients during a Phase 2 clinical trial. To develop the antivenom, a standardized process was undertaken to extract primary venom antigens from the Africanized bees for immunization of serum-producing horses. This process involved extracting, purifying, fractionating, characterizing, and identifying the venom (apitoxin) employing mass spectrometry to generate standardized antigen for hyperimmunization of horses using the major toxins (melittin and its isoforms and phospholipase A2). The current guide describes standardization of the entire production chain of venom antigens in compliance with good manufacturing practices (GMP) required by regulatory agencies. Our goal was to explore older adults' views on walkability on sidewalks. An online survey was conducted based on the Active Design framework and participants and experts committee analyzed 22 photographs about the quality of sidewalks for walking. The top barriers reported by older adults were poor sidewalk condition and lack of accessibility. Safety and good accessibility were identified as facilitators for a positive walking experience. There was disagreement in seven pictures, reflecting that they might not perceive bad walking experiences. Understating how older adults perceive attributes for walking may help shape actions for aging-friendly cities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article aims to shed light on the effects of financial constraints on the value shareholders attribute to cash holdings in firms listed on the Brazilian stock exchange, where corporate law determines that publicly listed companies set aside part of their annual profits for dividend payments. While prior empirical literature provides evidence that cash holdings are more valuable for financially constrained companies than for their unconstrained counterparts, we cannot support the hypothesis that the market value of cash increases as obtaining access to external funds becomes more difficult. Our analysis also reveals that constrained companies do not hold significantly higher cash savings than their unconstrained peers. This last result, in turn, is not in line with the precautionary motive for having cash. Moreover, although the principal argument for adopting mandatory dividend rules in Brazil was to increase the protection of minority shareholders, we observe that the contribution of cash holdings to firm value is still small in Brazil, especially in dual‐class companies, because investors expect cash holdings to be partly consumed as private benefits due to the presence of significant agency problems. This research is relevant because it serves as an additional step in understanding how a legal mechanism established by a government to protect investors affects the contribution of cash holdings to firm value. Governments that intend to adopt mandatory dividend rules to safeguard the cash‐flow rights of minority shareholders can use our findings to make better decisions regarding whether to enforce compulsory dividend payments. This study aims to examine the association between neighborhood environment attributes and changes in walking for transportation among older adults. Longitudinal analysis was performed considering a population-based study (EpiFloripa Idoso), carried out in 2009–2010 with follow-up in 2013–2014. Changes in walking, obtained with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire during both waves were associated with data from the environment perception, evaluated using individual items from the Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale (baseline only) performing multinomial logistic regression. A total of 1,162 older adults (65.2% women, mean age = 73.7 years) participated. Those who reported the presence of parks and squares (OR = 2.44, 95% confidence interval [CI; 1.70, 3.51]), sidewalks (OR = 1.66, 95% CI [1.03, 2.70]), crosswalks (OR = 1.69, 95% CI [1.05, 2.72]), illuminated streets (OR = 2.80, 95% CI [1.24, 6.33]), and safety for day walks (OR = 1.93, 95% CI [1.14, 3.24]) were more likely to remain active or become active when commuting (≥150 min/week). Simple Summary: The environmental impacts and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been evaluated across studies due to global climate change. Livestock production systems may be responsible in part for the increase in GHGs and, consequently, the environmental impacts. This study analyzed the environmental inputs and outputs and economic factors of a beef cattle feedlot system. Using a partial Life Cycle Assessment approach, we provide more information for consumers, researchers, scientists, and government officials about the environmental impacts arising from the production of premium and super-premium beef. We found that feed production is the most important source of GHGs, and diesel fuel plays a minor role in the environmental impacts. Finally, increased marbling degree in meat can lead to an increase in environmental impacts. When individual purchasing power increases in society, there is a trend toward a quantitative and qualitative increase in the consumption of products. Considering the magnitude of beef production in Brazil, environmental impacts are important factors for the domestic and international markets. This study assessed a Brazilian feedlot system characterized by high animal welfare standards that produces high-quality beef that is more marbled than that produced in grass-fed systems. We assessed the environmental impacts and compared premium and super-premium beef produced in a feedlot system using a partial Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Data were collected directly on the property analyzed, considering environmental inputs and outputs and economic factors associated with the production stages of each line (premium versus super-premium). The results show that high-quality beef has, beyond a greater financial cost, an environmental cost, with the super-premium line producing a 286% higher carbon footprint, 297% more eutrophication, and three times higher acidification potential and land use than the premium line. The results of the environmental impacts agree with the results of production costs, reflecting a 282.82% higher production cost in super-premium than in premium animals. Footprints of 5.0323 kg, 4.7746 kg, and 8.8858 kg CO2 eq./kg live weight gain at the feedlot were found in the three lines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Falls when using wheelchairs can have serious consequences for users. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate wheelchair types, daily movement and environmental factors associated with concerns about falls among wheelchair users. METHODS: Fifty-two wheelchair users (36 male and 16 female, mean age of 44.3 ± 10 years) were interviewed online and responded to questions about the characteristics of their wheelchair, their experiences and concerns about falling while using their wheelchair. RESULTS: It was found that the highest levels of concern about falling when using wheelchairs were associated with the use of rigid frame wheelchairs; and with activities such as moving on sidewalks and ramps. Half of the sample reported that they did not receive training on wheelchair usage and had concerns about performing wheelie maneuvers. Reported falls caused by wheelchair failure were associated with increased concerns about falls. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study suggest that wheelchair type, daily movements and environments all influence wheelchair users' concerns about falls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe six recovery-oriented peer support experiences and strategies implemented in different regions of Brazil in the past 12 years, and explore challenges to their development and potential for empowerment and citizenship. Design/methodology/approach: In this paper, a group of stakeholders in mental health services involving people with lived experience of severe mental illness describe their experiences with services of peer support. These were all conducted in Brazil and in partnership with the International Recovery and Citizenship Collective (IRCC) and The Yale Program for Recovery and Community Health. The authors met monthly to exchange experiences, studies and practices, and six experiences were selected, described, analyzed and compared. A discussion of these experiences, their challenges, impact and potential followed. Findings: The explored experiences emphasize that peer support, lived experience leadership and advocacy are feasible in the Brazilian mental health system and can help advance the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform. Research limitations/implications: This paper is limited to the experience of researchers already engaged in peer support work in six cities in Brazil. Although they represent several different regions in Brazil, there are areas it has not reached. Further research should address and provide a broader view of peer support and recovery strategies spreading in the country. Social implications: These experiences demonstrate the feasibility and acceptability of the recovering citizenship approach to reduce stigma, promote empowerment, autonomy, activism and advocacy, and increase a sense of belonging for those in recovery and marginalized by society. The Brazilian psychiatric reform can benefit from including peer supporters as mental health treatment providers. Originality/value: This paper provides a novel view of the state of the art of peer support initiatives in Brazil and can inspire individuals, government and communities as they see and understand the breadth, depth and meanings of these peer support experiences. The lack of information on biological aspects of small mammals in Brazil fits into two of the main gaps in knowledge of biodiversity – the Linnean and Wallacean shortfall. We performed a broad compilation of studies developed in the Paraná state to consolidate the first list of non-volant small mammal species. Furthermore, we indicate which regions lack information and greater sampling efforts to understand the biological aspects of small mammals. We listed 50 species belonging to 30 genera, five families, and two orders, which represent 37% of marsupials and small rodent species occurring in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Our results indicate that are regions in the Paraná state, such as the southwest, without a single record of small mammals, reveling a Wallacean shortfall of approximately 138.584 km2. Studies on the small-bodied mammal fauna in the state of Paraná are influenced by accessibility bias, concentrated at sites less than 50 kilometers distant from cities, roads, or airports. New research will not only have the challenge of knowing the species richness in regions that are still poorly or hitherto no studied, but also evaluate the state and the population dynamics of the species that persist in densely anthropized areas. Mammary pathogenic Escherichia coli (MPEC) is one of the most common pathogens associated with clinical mastitis. We analyzed isolates obtained from milk samples of cows with clinical mastitis, collected from 10 farms in Brazil, to verify molecular and phenotypic characteristics. A total of 192 (4.5%) mammary pathogenic E. coli isolates were obtained from 4,275 milk samples analyzed, but we tested 161. We assigned most of these isolates to E. coli phylogroups B1 (52.8%) and A (36.6%), although phylogroups B2, C, D, E, and unknown also occurred. All isolates were assessed for the presence of several genes encoding virulence factors, such as adhesins (sfaDE , papC , afaBC III , ecpA , fimH , papA , and iha), toxins (hlyA , cnf1 , sat , vat , and cdt), siderophores (iroN , irp2 , iucD , ireA , and sitA), an invasion protein (ibeA), and serum resistance proteins (traT , KpsMTII , and ompT), and isolates from phylogroups B1, B2, and E showed up to 8 genes. Two isolates harbored the locus of enterocyte effacement (escN +) and lack the bundle-forming pilus (bfpB −) operon, which corresponds to a molecular profile of a subgroup of diarrheagenic E. coli (aEPEC), thus being classified as hybrid MPEC/aEPEC isolates. These isolates displayed a localized adherence-like pattern of adherence in HeLa cells and were able to promote F-actin polymerization underneath adherent bacteria. Based on the pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analyses, considerable genetic variability was observed. A low index of antimicrobial resistance was observed and 2 extended-spectrum β-lactamase–producing E. coli were identified, both harboring bla CTX-M15 gene, and were classified as ST10 and ST993 using multilocus sequence typing. A total of 148 (91.2%) isolates were weak biofilm producers or formed no biofilm. Because raw milk is still frequently consumed in Brazil, the occurrence of virulence factor–encoding genes from extraintestinal or diarrheagenic E. coli added to the presence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase–producing isolates can turn this veterinary medicine problem into a public health concern. This study aimed to evaluate the chemical and antibacterial properties of the essential oil of B. dracunculifolia from three regions of Brazil: Midwest, Southeast and South region. The major compounds of essential oil from Midwest region were (E)-nerolidol (28.15%) and spathulenol (17.68%), both oxygenated sesquiterpenes. And the major compounds of essential oils from Southeast and South regions were (E)-nerolidol (12.75–13.95%), bicyclogermacrene (10.76–14.21%) and limonene (10.49–19.36%). The three essential oils showed antibacterial activity for both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria tested, with MIC values from 0.03 to 0.15 mg/mL and MBC values from 0.05 to 0.30 mg/mL. The B. dracunculifolia essential oil from the Midwest region of Brazil presented higher values of oxygenated sesquiterpenes and was more effective on all tested bacterial strains, with lower and statistically significant MBC values, compared to the oils from the Southeast and South regions of Brazil [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hatchery fish stocking is one of the main actions adopted as a form of conservation and replacement of fishing stocks. Under Brazilian law, the release of fish has become mandatory and is seen as one of the main ways of mitigating the negative effects on fish populations and preserving the ichthyofauna. Since its institution, the efficiency of this method has been questioned by the Brazilian scientific community, due to the lack of monitoring based on scientific criteria. The objective of this work was to discuss the few available reports and to analyze their deficiencies and analyze the real risks and/or benefits arising from the methodologies employed in hatchery stocking activities developed in Brazil. For this, three different studies developed in the Paranapanema River, Southeast/South of Brazil, were evaluated seeking evidence of the efficiency or inefficiency of these actions, such as management of the conservation of fish species and stocks. Our analysis shows that this management policy is poorly evaluated, and review of the planning of the stocking programs is essential, in order to improve, update, modernize, and unify the knowledge of the producing stations with respect to the existing ecological and genetic studies, aiming at better monitoring and greater effectiveness in the results advance. To analyze the effect of a comprehensive program of cognitive stimulation with digital inclusion, physical activity and social interaction, called "Oficina da Lembrança" (OL), on the cognitive status and concentration of biomarkers of neuroplasticity, neurodegeneration in adults aged 50 years and over attending a Memory Clinic. In this pilot randomized controlled study, 64 patients without dementia aged 45 to 79 years, seen at a University Memory Clinic in Southern Brazil, were randomly allocated to the intervention and control groups. The intervention consisted of participation in OL for 12 weeks. Serum biomarkers (brain-derived neurotrophic factor [BDNF], S100β, and neuron-specific enolase [NSE]) and cognitive status were analyzed as primary and secondary outcomes. The Wilcoxon test and Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) were applied. Of the 64 patients invited to participate in the study, 33 (intervention: 17, control: 16) completed the study with all data. Improvement of cognitive status was significant in the intervention group (22.6 to 24.5) but not in the control group (20.1 to 21.1). There was a significant reduction of BDNF in OL participants, but no significant change was observed in the neurodegenerative biomarkers S100β or NSE. The concentration of BDNF decreased significantly post-OL in the intervention group (-288.1, 95%CI −362.1 to −94.1), even after adjusting for sex, age, and educational level. Cognitive status was significantly improved in OL participants. The OL program improved cognitive status, reduced serum BDNF levels, and empowered digitally excluded older adults. There was no effect of this intervention on S100β or NSE. Objective: To investigate the association between serum vitamin D (25-hydroxy-cholecalciferol) (25(OH)D) concentrations and cognitive impairment in older adults living in Southern Brazil.Design: Cross-sectional analysis using data from the second follow-up wave of the populational-based EpiFloripa Aging Cohort Study was collected in 2013-2014.Setting: Cognitive impairment was evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Blood samples were collected to measure serum vitamin D concentrations using a chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay. Vitamin D concentrations were distributed in quartiles (Q1: 4·0-20·7 ng/ml; Q2: 20·8-26·6 ng/ml; Q3: 26·7-32·0 ng/ml and Q4: 32·1-60·1 ng/ml), and its association with cognitive impairment was tested by crude and adjusted logistic regression (sociodemographic, behavioural and health aspects) using Q4 as a reference group.Participants: 200 men and 371 women aged 60 years or older participated in this study.Results: The prevalence of probable cognitive impairment was 21·7 %. Those without cognitive impairment had a higher mean of vitamin D serum concentrations (26·8 v. 24·6, P = 0·014). In the crude analysis, only individuals in Q2 of vitamin D presented an increased risk for probable cognitive impairment compared with Q4 (highest quartile) (OR 2·65, 95 % CI 1·46, 4·81), remaining significant in the adjusted analysis (OR 6·04, 95 % CI 2·78, 13·13). While Q1 (lowest quartile) was not associated in the crude analysis, but when adjusted, an increased risk of cognitive impairment was observed.Conclusion: The lowest quartile of vitamin D was directly associated with probable cognitive impairment in older adults in Southern Brazil. More studies are needed to investigate whether maintaining adequate serum levels may represent a significant factor in preventing age-related neurological disorders as well as to verify the need for new cutoff points for this age group. Purpose: To estimate the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and its association with changes in modifiable risk factors in older adults from southern Brazil. Methods: A longitudinal study was performed with data from EpiFloripa Aging study. We defined MetS by the existence of three or more of the following risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD): waist circumference (WC) (≥ 92 cm in men and ≥ 87 cm in women); fasting glucose (≥100 mg/dl); decreased HDL cholesterol (<40 mg/dl in men and <50 mg/dl in women); hypertriglyceridemia (≥150 mg/dl) and blood pressure (≥130/85 mmHg). We evaluated the changes in modifiable risk factors (smoking, alcohol consumption, fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity, and body mass index) between the two moments of the study (2009/10 and 2013/14). Directed acyclic graph and logistic regression models were used. Results: Among the 599 participants, the prevalence of MetS was 64.0% (95% CI, 58.7–68.9). In the adjusted analysis, those who remained or became persons who are overweight (OR = 4.59; 95% CI: 3.05–6.89) and those who remained or became insufficiently active (OR = 1.92; 95% CI: 1.23–2.98) were more likely to present MetS. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that being or becoming overweight and being or becoming insufficiently active are modifiable factors associated with MetS. These results highlight the need for developing preventive strategies for the observed risk indicators to mitigate the prevalence of MetS in older adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Salmonella enterica serovar Heidelberg is isolated from poultry-producing regions around the world. In Brazil, S. Heidelberg has been frequently detected in poultry flocks, slaughterhouses, and chicken meat. The goal of the present study was to assess the population structure, recent temporal evolution, and some important genetic characteristics of S. Heidelberg isolated from Brazilian poultry farms. Phylogenetic analysis of 68 S. Heidelberg genomes sequenced here and additional whole-genome data from NCBI demonstrated that all isolates from the Brazilian poultry production chain clustered into a monophyletic group, here called S. Heidelberg Brazilian poultry lineage (SH-BPL). Bayesian analysis defined the time of the most recent common ancestor (tMRCA) as 2004, and the overall population size (Ne) was constant until 2008, when an ~ 10-fold Ne increase was observed until circa 2013. SH-BPL presented at least two plasmids with replicons ColpVC (n = 68; 100%), IncX1 (n = 66; 97%), IncA/C2 (n = 65; 95.5%), ColRNAI (n = 43; 63.2%), IncI1 (n = 32; 47%), ColMG828, Col156, IncHI2A, IncHI2, IncQ1, IncX4, IncY, and TrfA (each with n < 4; <4% each). Antibiotic resistance genes were found, with high frequencies of fosA7 (n = 68; 100%), mdf(A) (n = 68; 100%), tet(34) (n = 68; 100%), sul2 (n = 64; 94.1%), and blaCMY-2 (n = 56; 82.3%), along with an overall multidrug resistance (MDR) profile. Ten Salmonella pathogenicity islands (SPI1 to SPI5, SPI9, and SPI11 to SPI14) and 139 virulence genes were also detected. The SH-BPL profile was like those of other previous S. Heidelberg isolates from poultry around the world in the 1990s. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates the recent introduction (2004) and high level of dissemination of an MDR S. Heidelberg lineage in Brazilian poultry operations. IMPORTANCE S. Heidelberg is the most frequent serovar in several broiler farms from the main Brazilian poultry-producing regions. Therefore, avian-source foods (mainly chicken carcasses) commercialized in the country and exported to other continents are contaminated with this foodborne pathogen, generating several national and international economic losses. In addition, isolates of this serovar are usually resistant to antibiotics and can cause human invasive and septicemic infection, representing a public health concern. This study demonstrates the use of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to obtain epidemiological information for one S. Heidelberg lineage highly spread among Brazilian poultry farms. The combination of highly equipped smartphones, with the increased use of social media, has offered a wide database. Given this, citizen science can be used to record and monitor non‐native fish fauna, target new samples and collaborate with monitoring occurrences in new areas. We aimed to demonstrate the efficiency of social media in citizen science as a tool to cooperate with monitoring studies of non‐native species. Consequently, we determined the occurrence points of S. brasiliensis in the Iguaçu River basin, indicating sites of greatest occurrence and analyzing the impact of the invasion on the native fauna of the basin. Files and information available on the YouTube® and Facebook® media platforms were used as data, was carried out from April 2019 to April 2020. The results were 40 records, 22 videos obtained from Youtube, and seven videos and 11 photos from Facebook, the oldest record was from April 2013, while the largest number of posts was in 2016. Fish records available from online platforms can reveal the occurrence and progressive dispersion of species, in the context of biological invasions, these tools can be of great value in studies that aim to follow the progress of introduced species, contributing by helping to direct new sampling programs and corroborating the occurrence of species in new areas in conjunction with standard monitoring programs. Based on citizen science records, it was possible to update the range of occurrence of the non‐native S. brasiliensis in the Iguaçu River basin, cooperating with scientific knowledge. Innovative monitoring and control measures are necessary to deal with invasive species, with citizen science proving to be competent for determining the occurrence of species and showing promise in the entire field of ichthyology. Objective – To investigate if any combination of serum vitamin B12 and folate is superior to the use of separate vitamins for identify risk of probable cognitive deficit in older adults from southern Brazil. Methods -We analyzed data from the second wave (2013/14) of a population- and household-based survey. A total of 590 older adults (≥ 60 years) were included. Cognitive function was identified by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The independent variables were serum levels of vitamin B12 and folate. The data were adjusted for age, education level, income, smoking status, alcohol intake, food intake, leisure-time physical activity, depression symptoms, chronic diseases, and body mass index. Results – High serum folate levels and their continuous increase were positively associated with cognition. The serum combination of vitamins most found in the study was the excess folate and normal for vitamin B12, but this combination was not associated with the cognitive function. In this study, the authors report morphological deformities in driftwood catfish Trachelyopterus galeatus (Auchenipteridae), an invasive catfish occurring in the Upper Paraná River basin, Brazil. The frequency of anomalous individuals reached 18.3% of all catches. X‐ray images showed anomalies, or total absence of structures, in the pelvic girdle. The authors also observed the absence of the adipose fin and mental barbels. These findings are of extreme importance for evidencing the anthropogenic impact on aquatic communities as the region suffers within fragmentation by dams and pollution from several human activities. The present paper, of theoretical and pedagogical nature, discusses the relevance of the Portuguese language in Brazil and in the world, through statistical data, and emphasizes its role as an additional language, as a point of cultural, commercial, and economic exchange. It addresses, as a second topic, concepts about education for global citizenship, and presents that used in the teaching practice of the authors in a university context, namely, that of encouraging local and global coexistence and cooperative learning. Finally, it discusses the discipline Portuguese as an Additional Language for international students attending postgraduate studies at an HEI in the south of Brazil, highlighting actions that seek to contribute to the exchange of critical scientific thinking inserted in a plurilingual and multicultural environment. A species is considered native to a region if its presence is the result of natural processes or if its colonisation of a new geographical region occurs naturally, while non-native species are defined as those living outside their natural range, even if introduced from other basins or regions within the same country (Guo & Ricklefs, 2010; Vitule et al., 2019). Such differences in regulations may motivate fishermen to move from states where the species is protected to states where the species occurs naturally but where there is no such protection. In south-eastern Brazil (Doce River), this species negatively affects other species ( I e.g i . crustacean and fish communities) (Ruschi, 1965). Background: Older adults are one of the most susceptible populations to depression, especially those living in low- and middle-income countries. As well, they are also considering a risk group for vitamin D deficiency. Low serum vitamin D has been associated with an increased risk of brain neuropsychiatry disorders. We aimed to investigate the association between serum 25-hydroxycholecalciferol concentrations and depressive symptoms in adults aged 60 years and over from southern Brazil.Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was performed using data collected during 2013-2014 from the populational-based longitudinal EpiFloripa Aging Study (n = 1197). Serum 25-hydroxycholecalciferol concentrations were analyzed and classified according to the Endocrine Society reference values [sufficiency (≥ 30 ng/mL), insufficiency (21-29 ng/mL), and deficiency (≤ 20 ng/mL)]. Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Geriatric Depression Scale (15-item GDS). Logistic regression was performed to assess depressive symptoms in each vitamin D category. The analysis was adjusted for sex, age, skin color, family income, leisure-time physical activities, social or religious groups attendance, morbidities, cognitive impairment, and dependence in activities of daily living.Results: A total of 557 participants with complete data for exposure and outcome were enrolled in the analysis. Most of the sample participants were female (63.1%), age-range 60-69 years (42.2%), white skin color (85.1%), and vitamin D serum level samples were collected in autumn (50.7%). Depressive symptoms were present in 15.8% of the participants, and the prevalence was higher in individuals classified as deficient in vitamin D (23.2, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 15.6;32.9) and insufficiency (17.2, 95%CI = 11.0;25.9). The crude analysis showed that vitamin D deficient participants had 3.08 (CI = 1.53;6.20) times higher odds to present depressive symptoms compared to vitamin D sufficiency. After adjusting, the association was maintained [OR 2.27 (95%CI = 1.05;4.94).Conclusions: Serum 25-hydroxycholecalciferol deficiency was positively associated with depressive symptoms in older adults from southern Brazil. is a large semi-aquatic rodent ranked as one of the 100 most invasive species in the world. In Brazil, few ecological studies have been proposed to understand the relationship of this species with the environment. To date, drivers that facilitate its establishment in new areas remain unknown. However, it is generally accepted that the natural distribution of this species is limited to far southern Brazil. The present study aimed to understand the geographic distribution of M. coypus and indicate areas of greater risk of establishment based on bioclimatic predictors and a surveillance map. We observed that M. coypus suitability and risk assessment areas are restricted to the southeastern and southern regions of Brazil and that anthropogenic landscape modifications are an adequate variable to explain the occurrence of the species. Due to the environmental impacts caused by this species, monitoring in environments where it has been introduced is required. The model used herein presented efficient applicability and fit for Brazil. Preventive actions and the management of M. coypus in predicted regions prior to its establishment are recommended. Brazil is a megadiverse country and is participant of fundamental environmental agreements for biodiversity conservation. However, the internal politics and the cultures that affect negatively the ecological integrity in Brazilian freshwater need to be improved on the condition of sustainable management. Scientific community, the government and stakeholders are in constant conflicts of goals. Meanwhile, the current model for Brazilian aquaculture shows problems of ecological impact due to the lack of appropriated planning and legislation to the aquatic biota. The non‐recognition of sustainable census incorporated in its environmental politics reflects in an archaic and unsustainable management, with the following characters: a non‐specific approach for technical management, the indiscriminate use of interspecific hybrids and non‐native species and the lack of skilled labour. The potential impact on native species and the introduction of pathogens are the main negative effects on aquatic biota. This way, the aim of this article is to elucidate the conflicts of interests and ecological effects of fish aquaculture in Brazil, besides providing good practices and sustainable alternatives for management. In 1957, an invasive and highly defensive honey bee began to spread across Brazil. In the previous year, Brazilian researchers hoped to produce a subtropical-adapted honey bee by crossing local commercial honey bees (of European origin) with a South African honey bee subspecies (Apis mellifera scutellata ; an A-lineage honey bee subspecies). The resulting cross—African hybrid honey bees (AHBs)—escaped from their enclosure and spread through the Americas. Today, AHB is the most common honey bee from Northern Argentina to the Southern United States. AHBs are much more likely to sting nest intruders than managed European-derived honey bee colonies. Previous studies have explored how genetic variation contributes to differences in defense response between European-derived honey bee and AHB. Although this work demonstrated very strong genetic effects on defense response, they have yet to pinpoint which genes influence variation in defense response within AHBs, specifically. We quantified defense response for 116 colonies in Brazil and performed pooled sequencing on the most phenotypically divergent samples. We identified 65 loci containing 322 genes that were significantly associated with defense response. Loci were strongly associated with metabolic function, consistent with previous functional genomic analyses of this phenotype. Additionally, defense-associated loci had nonrandom and unexpected patterns of admixture. Defense response was not simply the product of more A-lineage honey bee ancestry as previously assumed, but rather an interaction between A-lineage and European alleles. The characteristics of successful invaders often include generalist traits that enable adaptation to new environments through plastic responses, including their diet. The use of trophic resources of invasive driftwood catfish Trachelyopterus galeatus of the Upper Paraná River basin, Brazil, were studied with diet analysis and stable isotopic niche metrics based on δ15N and δ13C to test differences between a free‐from‐dam and damming population, and between wet and dry season. Stomach content analyses revealed significant differences between the populations. The diet of the riverine free‐flowing river population was macroinvertebrate dominated, with Coleoptera and Lepidoptera prominent. In the damming population, diet was largely plant based, although Coleoptera was also prominent. Trophic niche breadth comparisons revealed a larger niche in the free‐from‐dam population versus the damming population that was independent of season. In both sites had dietary differences between the wet and dry season according to stomach contents analyses, although these were less prominent according to stable isotope metrics. Therefore, the diet of this invader is relatively general and plastic, enabling their exploitation of the varying availability of food resources between free‐from‐dam and damming river sections, and between wet and dry season. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of ear protectors on the sleep of preterm newborns during the "quiet" times in intermediate care nursery. This was a clinical, randomized, controlled crossover study conducted in two neonatal units in São Paulo, Brazil. The sample consisted of preterm infants who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the study. Polysomnography and unstructured observation were used for data collection. Twenty-four preterm infants with a mean gestational age of 33.2 weeks and current weight of 1.747 g were analyzed. There was no significant difference in the total sleep time of preterm infants with and without the use of ear protectors. Newborns with lower gestational age showed a significant reduction in total sleep time with the use of ear protectors (p <.05). Objective: To investigate the influence of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) on cognitive impairment of the older adults' population in southern Brazil. Methods: A longitudinal, population-based and home-based study that evaluates the older adults population (60 years or older) living in the city of Florianópolis, Southern Brazil. The sample at the baseline (2009/2010) was composed by 1,702 older adults. Cognitive impairment and IADL disability were investigated. A multilevel logistic model was used, in which the analyzed variables were included as the first level and time (baseline and follow-up interviews) as the second level variable. Results: The prevalence of cognitive impairment increased from baseline to follow-up. There was an increase in the chance of the older adults presenting cognitive impairment among those with low (OR: 1.5, 95% CI: 1.0–2.3) and moderate/severe disability (OR: 3.2, 95% CI: 2.1–4.9). Adjusted probability of presenting the outcome almost doubled among those with mild disability, and were nearly four times higher among the older adults with moderate/severe disability when compared to those without disability. Conclusions: IADL disability can be considered an indicator of risk for clinical diagnosis of cognitive impairment. Its evaluation and follow-up are of paramount importance, especially in the older adults with mild disability, in order to avoid the progression of functional and cognitive impairment over time. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between subjective and objective characteristics of the built environment and the incidence of disability in the activities of daily living in the older adults. A cohort study was conducted with 1196 older adults from Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Incidences were evaluated after four years by the difficulty or inability to perform six basic and nine instrumental activities. The subjective built environment was evaluated by the adapted Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale and the objective for variables related to the characteristics of streets, sidewalks and land uses in the census tracts. Multilevel Logistic Regression analyzes were performed, where significant positive associations were observed between the presence of hills, and negative associations between safety for walking at night, a high proportion of commercial area, intermediate mixed land use and the incidence of disability in basic activities. The built environment characteristics associated with disability point to the need for improvements in urban infrastructure to promote functional independence in the older adults. Objective: The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of indicators of healthy food consumption among older adults with diabetes and/or hypertension and whether or not they occur more frequently than in healthy older adults.Methods: Cross-sectional study with 1656 older adults who participated in the first wave of a longitudinal, population-based study held in Florianopolis, Southern Brazil, EpiFloripa Idoso 2009/2010, using the self-reported diagnosis of diabetes and/or hypertension as exposure variable and indicators of healthy food consumption as outcomes.Results: Only 22.7% (95% CI: 20.1-25.3) of females and 29.6% (95% CI:25.8-33.4) of males eat fruit ≥ 3 times/day and vegetables ≥ 2 times/day. More than one third of the sample had frequent consumption (> 2 times/week) of fats from meat/chicken, fried foods and whole milk.Conclusion: We found that the indicators of healthy food consumption do not differ among older adults with and without diabetes and/or hypertension, indicating no adopting of the secondary prevention measures in the treatment of these diseases. Information on the knowledge, uses, and abundance of natural resources in local communities can provide insight on conservation status and conservation strategies in these locations. The aim of this research was to evaluate the uses, knowledge and conservation status of plants in two Quilombolas (descendants of slaves of African origin) communities in the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil, São Sebastião da Boa Vista (SSBV) and São Bento (SB). We used a combination of ethnobotanical and ecological survey methods to ask: 1) What ethnobotanical knowledge do the communities hold? 2) What native species are most valuable to them? 3) What is the conservation status of the native species used? Thirteen local experts described the names and uses of 212 species in SSBV (105 native species) and 221 in SB (96 native species). Shannon Wiener diversity and Pielou’s Equitability indices of ethnobotanical knowledge of species were very high (5.27/0.96 and 5.28/0.96, respectively). Species with the highest cultural significance and use-value indexes in SSBV were Dalbergia hortensis (26/2.14), Eremanthus erythropappus (6.88/1), and Tibouchina granulosa (6.02/1); while Piptadenia gonoacantha (3.32/1), Sparattosperma leucanthum (3.32/1) and Cecropia glaziovii (3.32/0.67) were the highest in SB. Thirty-three native species ranked in the highest conservation priority category at SSBV and 31 at SB. D. hortensis was noteworthy because of its extremely high cultural importance at SSBV, and its categorization as a conservation priority in both communities. Objective: To investigate the associations between perceived environment features and walking in older adults. Method: A cross-sectional population-based study was performed in Florianopolis, Brazil, including 1,705 older adults (60+ years). Walking was measured by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and perceived environment was assessed through the Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale. We conducted a multinomial logistic regression to examine the association between perceived environment and walking. Results: The presence of sidewalks was related to both walking for transportation and for leisure. Existence of crosswalks in the neighborhood, safety during the day, presence of street lighting, recreational facilities, and having dog were significant predictors of walking for transportation. Safety during the day and social support were significantly associated with walking for leisure. Discussion: The perceived environment may affect walking for specific purposes among older adults. Objective We seek to comprehensively assess stillbirths in Brazil, to compare the Brazilian findings with global trends and to identify the limitations of the fetal death record system. Method We studied fetal deaths in Brazil between 1996 and 2012 within the following five regions of the country: the North, Northeast, Southeast, South, and Central-West, through an analysis of data obtained from the Unified Health System's (SUS) Informatics Department. The rates of stillbirth in Brazil and in these regions were calculated in relation to the maternal and gestational age and education, birth weight, type of pregnancy, delivery type, weight ranges and cause of death. Results There were 579,661 recorded fetal deaths and a decrease of 22.9 % in the stillbirth rate. In 2012, the overall rate was 10.0/1000 births; the North and Northeast regions had the highest rates (10.3 and 12.1, respectively) and the South region had the lowest rate (7.7/1000 births). Two-thirds of the deaths occurred in pregnancies of 28 or more weeks. Low education was an important risk factor, with rates of 24.3/1000 birth in women with no formal education and 4.7/1000 birth in women with 12 or more years of study in 2012. More than 40 % of the causes of deaths were nonspecific. Conclusions Despite the gradual decline in stillbirth rates, Brazil still has stillbirth rates that are nearly two times higher than those found in developed countries. Background:A consistent and low-to-moderate association between markers of oral infection and loss of cognitive function has been demonstrated in the literature. However, such evidence comes from population studies carried out mainly in the USA. Objectives:To assess the association between tooth loss and loss of cognitive function in older people from Southern Brazil, with particular interest on how age may modify such association. In addition, we also test the association between loss of cognition (exposure) and tooth loss (outcome). Methods:Data from a baseline population-based cohort study were cross-sectionally analyzed, including tooth loss, cognitive impairment, sex, income, educational attainment, color/race, smoking status and a range of self-reported chronic diseases. Participants (n= 1705) were 60 years of age and over, from a midsized Southern Brazilian city. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were estimated using multivariable logistic and partial ordinal logistic analyses. Results:Edentate status was associated (OR 3.3; 95%CI 1.2–9.3) with severe cognitive impairment in the fully adjusted model. Moreover, there was an interaction between number of teeth and age on severe cognitive impairment. A weak association between severe cognitive impairment (exposure) and tooth loss (outcome) was identified after the adjustment for potential covariates. Conclusions:This study lends support to hypothesized association between tooth loss and severe cognitive impairment. Older adults seem to be particularly vulnerable to such effects. However, the bidirectional association between tooth loss and severe cognitive impairment cannot be ruled out. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
