Lipophosphoglycan (LPG), the major Leishmania glycoconjugate, induces pro‐inflammatory/immunosuppressive innate immune responses. Here, we evaluated functional/biochemical LPG properties from six Leishmania amazonensis strains from different hosts/clinical forms. LPGs from three strains (GV02, BA276, and LV79) had higher pro‐inflammatory profiles for most of the mediators, including tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin 6. For this reason, glycoconjugates from all strains were biochemically characterized and had polymorphisms in their repeat units. They consisted of three types: type I, repeat units devoid of side chains; type II, containing galactosylated side chains; and type III, containing glucosylated side chains. No relationship was observed between LPG type and the pro‐inflammatory properties. Finally, to evaluate the susceptibility against antileishmanial agents, two strains with high (GV02, BA276) and one with low (BA336) pro‐inflammatory activity were selected for chemotherapeutic tests in THP‐1 cells. All analyzed strains were susceptible to amphotericin B (AmB) but displayed various responses against miltefosine (MIL) and glucantime (GLU). The GV02 strain (canine visceral leishmaniasis) had the highest IC50 for MIL (3.34 μM), whereas diffuse leishmaniasis strains (BA276 and BA336) had a higher IC50 for GLU (6.87–12.19 mM). The highest IC50 against MIL shown by the GV02 strain has an impact on clinical management. Miltefosine is the only drug approved for dog treatment in Brazil. Further studies into drug susceptibility of L. amazonensis strains are warranted, especially in areas where dog infection by this species overlaps with those caused by Leishmania infantum. Objectives Propolis is a bee-made product used for centuries due to its diverse biological properties, including its immunomodulatory action. This work aimed at investigating whether propolis may affect monocyte functions challenged with retinoic acid (RA), B subunit of Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin (EtxB), human melanoma-associated antigen-1 (MAGE-1) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Methods Monocytes from healthy donors were treated with the stimuli separately or in the presence of propolis. Cell viability was evaluated by MTT assay, cell marker expression was assessed by flow cytometry, cytokine production by ELISA, gene expression by RT-qPCR. Key findings Propolis alone maintained TLR-2, TLR-4, HLA-DR, CD40 and CD80 expression in the monocytes; however, its combination with either MAGE-1 or LPS decreased CD40 expression triggered by the stimuli. Propolis maintained RA action on cell marker expression. Propolis inhibited TNF-α (with either EtxB or MAGE-1) and IL-6 (with either RA or MAGE-1), and increased IL-10 (with MAGE-1) production. Propolis downmodulated LC3 expression induced by LPS. It also induced a lower NF-kB expression than control cells and its combination with RA induced a higher expression than the stimulus alone. Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-transmitted flavivirus that caused a public health emergency in the Americas when an outbreak in Brazil became linked to congenital microcephaly. Understanding how ZIKV could evade the innate immune defenses of the mother, placenta, and fetus has become central to determining how the virus can traffic into the fetal brain. ZIKV, like other flaviviruses, evades host innate immune responses by leveraging viral proteins and other processes that occur during viral replication to allow spread to the placenta. Within the placenta, there are diverse cell types with coreceptors for ZIKV entry, creating an opportunity for the virus to establish a reservoir for replication and infect the fetus. The fetal brain is vulnerable to ZIKV, particularly during the first trimester, when it is beginning a dynamic process, to form highly complex and specialized regions orchestrated by neuroprogenitor cells. In this review, we provide a conceptual framework to understand the different routes for viral trafficking into the fetal brain and the eye, which are most likely to occur early and later in pregnancy. Based on the injury profile in human and nonhuman primates, ZIKV entry into the fetal brain likely occurs across both the blood/cerebrospinal fluid barrier in the choroid plexus and the blood/brain barrier. ZIKV can also enter the eye by trafficking across the blood/retinal barrier. Ultimately, the efficient escape of innate immune defenses by ZIKV is a key factor leading to viral infection. However, the host immune response against ZIKV can lead to injury and perturbations in developmental programs that drive cellular division, migration, and brain growth. The combined effect of innate immune evasion to facilitate viral propagation and the maternal/placental/fetal immune response to control the infection will determine the extent to which ZIKV can injure the fetal brain. Background: The mannose-binding lectin (MBL2) and nitric oxide synthase 3 (NOS3) genes are associated with the immune response against inflammatory processes, have been reported as possibly related with premature birth. Until now, most of the researches regarding the genetic influence of prematurity have revealed limited results because only investigating the child or the mothers' genotypes, thus not exploring the possible effects of interactions between these genotypes or the interactions with environmental factors related to the duration of pregnancy.Objective: We performed a replica study investigating the influence of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in MBL2 and NOS3 genes on premature birth, also considering socioeconomic, demographic, and gestational factors.Materials and methods: We conducted a case-control study with 189 mother-infant dyads, with 104 spontaneous preterm births and 85 term births from Recife, Brazil. We used peripheral blood samples and umbilical cord samples to extract DNA. Functional SNPs at exon 1 and promoter region of MBL2 and NOS3 RS1799983 SNP were genotyped using direct sequencing and fluorescent allelic specific TaqMan® assays respectively. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS®) program with bivariate association and logistic multivariate regression tests.Results: We observed a prevalence of MBL2 wild-type genotype in the mother-infant dyad of the preterm group and polymorphic genotype in the mother-infant dyad of term birth. The haplotype LYA predominated in our sample, being more frequent in the preterm group, while the haplotype LYB, correlated with lower levels of MBL protein, was more frequent in the term birth group. About NOS3 RS1799983 SNP, the G/G genotype was more frequent throughout the sample. The heterozygous genotype predominated among women from the preterm group, showed a borderline difference between the groups. When MBL2 genotypes of the mother and son were analyzed together, codon 54 of MBL2 remained associated with prematurity. When the variables with p value lower than .20 in the bivariate analysis were analyzed by logistic regression, the low weight of the pregnant woman in relation to the gestational age, the occurrence of preterm premature rupture of membranes, urinary tract infection during birth and maternal history of other premature births were risk factors to prematurity. On the other hand, the presence of B allele at codon 54 of maternal MBL2 was a protective factor for the occurrence of spontaneous premature birth. In contrast, a borderline association was established between the maternal genetic variation within NOS3 gene and the outcome studied.Conclusions: Our study, limited by the small number of patients enrolled, indicates that MBL2 and NOS3 functional SNPs are associated with the occurrence of spontaneous prematurity and the regulation of the maternal inflammatory response. Despite these results are in agreement with previously reports, our findings do not replicate the ones reported in a large genome-wide association study performed on quite high number of subjects. Thus, we can conclude that MBL2 and NOS3 functional SNPs are plausible candidate risk factors just in few preterm birth cases, and consequently they cannot be included in the general diagnostic practice. Since the ZIKV outbreak in Brazil in 2015, the scientific community has joined efforts to gather more information on the epidemiology, clinical features and pathogenicity of the virus. Bothrops snakes cause around 80% of snakebites in Brazil, with muscle tissue damage as an important consequence, which may cause dysfunction on the affected limb. Bothropstoxin-I (BthTX-I) from Bothrops jararacussu is a K49-phospholipase A2, involved in the injury and envenomation's inflammatory response. Immune system components act in the resolution of tissue damage and regeneration. Thus, macrophages exert a crucial role in the elimination of dead tissue and muscle repair. Here, we studied the cellular influx and presence of classical and alternative macrophages (M1 and M2) during muscle injury induced by BthTX-I and the regeneration process. BthTX-I elicited intense inflammatory response characterized by neutrophil migration, then increased influx of M1 macrophages followed by M2 population that declined, resulting in tissue regeneration. The high expressions of TNF-α and IL6 were changed by increased TGF-β expression after BthTX-I injection, coinciding with the iNOs and arginase expression and the peaks of M1 and M2 macrophages in muscle tissue. A coordinated sequence of PAX7, MyoD, and myogenin expression involved in muscle regenerative process appeared after BthTX-I injection. Together, these results demonstrate a direct correlation between the macrophage subsets, cytokine microenvironment, and the myogenesis process. Purpose: Factors influencing fallopian tube occlusion in women with a lower genital tract infection remain incompletely elucidated. We evaluated whether a polymorphism in the mannose-binding lectin (MBL) gene at codon 54 influences the occurrence of fallopian tube blockage in relation to exposure to Chlamydia trachomatis.Methods: In a case-control study at The Hospital das Clínicas, University of São Paulo, Brazil, 75 women with hysterosalpingography-documented tubal occlusion and 75 women with patent fallopian tubes were analyzed for detection of single-nucleotide polymorphism in codon 54 of the MBL gene and for IgG anti-C. trachomatis antibodies in their sera. Both groups were matched for age, race, and sexual variables.Results: Prior exposure to C. trachomatis, as evidenced by the presence of IgG antibodies, was comparable in both groups. Detection of the polymorphic MBL allele was more prevalent in women with blocked tubes (p < 0.01), regardless of whether or not there was evidence of prior chlamydial exposure.Conclusion: The level of MBL-related innate immunity influences the consequences of infection by C. trachomatis or other microbes. Background: A dysregulated inflammatory response contributes to decline in patients with COVID-19. This cross-sectional study evaluated biomarkers of unvaccinated patients admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Fortaleza, Brazil. Methods: Twenty cytokines were quantified upon hospital admission; clinical and laboratory data were analyzed, as well as sociodemographic data, to search for an association with clinical outcomes, including fatal (n = 40) or recovered cases (n = 38). Results: Fatal cases exhibited significantly higher levels of IL-18 (p = 0.009); deceased patients were older (p = 0.0001), had a lower number of platelets (p = 0.0063) and higher neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (p = 0.0230) than those who recovered. Conclusion: These findings indicate that IL-18 is a possible marker to predict poor prognosis in critically ill patients with COVID-19.

Aim We hypothesized that platelet inactivation induced by drugs might interfere with periodontal repair in experimental periodontitis by suppressing the release of biological mediators from platelets at the site of injury. Material and Methods Sixty rats were randomly assigned to six groups ( n = 10) and ligatures were placed around lower first molars of three groups. The other three groups were used as negative controls. Ligatures were removed after 10 days of periodontitis induction and all groups were submitted to treatment with aspirin (Asp) (30 mg/kg), clopidogrel (Clop) (75 mg/kg) or NaCl 0.9% intra-gastrically once daily for 3 days. Periodontal tissue was assessed by the measurement of CXCL12, CXCL4, CCL5 and platelet-derived growth factor ( PDGF) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; histomorphometrical analysis of polymorphonuclear ( PMN) infiltration, attachment loss, bone loss and osteoclast numbers and quantification of blood vessels by imunnohistochemistry. Results During periodontal repair and treatment with NaCl 0.9%, CCL5 was decreased and CXCL12 increased when compared with negative control groups. Asp and Clop did not affect CCL5 expression, decreased CXCL12 but only Clop decreased CXCL4 and PDGF content compared with saline-treated animals. Clop increased blood vessel number, reduced PMN count and decreased attachment and bone loss, also decreased osteoclast number in animals submitted or not to periodontal repair. Conclusion Systemic administration of Clop for 3 days improved the repair process associated with experimental periodontal disease, suggesting that it may have therapeutic value under situations where tissues undergo a transition from inflammation to repair. Noroviruses (NoV) are the main etiological agents of gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide and susceptibility to NoV infection has been related to the histo-blood group antigen (HBGA). This study aimed to determine the prevalence of NoV strains and to evaluate the HBGA phenotype and genotype of children from semi-isolated Quilombola communities, descendents of black slaves in Brazil. A total of 397 children up to eleven years old, with and without diarrhea, from Quilombola Communities in the Espirito Santo State, Brazil, were investigated for the presence of NoV from August 2007 to September 2009. Feces were collected from all the children, and blood from the NoV positive children. NoV was screened by reverse transcription-PCR with primers for the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase region; genogroup was determined by PCR with primers for the C and D regions and genotyped by sequencing. HBGA phenotype was performed by gel-spinning and FUT2 and FUT3 were analyzed by PCR or sequencing analysis. NoV were detected in 9.2% (12/131) of diarrheic and 1.5% (4/266) of non-diarrheic children (p<0.05, Fisher’s exact test). GI and GII genogroups were present in 12.5% and 87.5% of the samples, respectively. The following genotypes were characterized: GII.4 (25%), GII.12 (25%), GII.6 (12.5%) and GI.1 (6.3%), GI.3 (12.5%) and GI.4 (6.3%). Children infected with NoV showed the A (n = 6), O (n = 6), and B (n = 2) HBGA phenotypes, and 13 of them were classified as secretors (Se) and one as a non secretor (se). Mutations of Se40, 171,216,357,428,739,960 were found for the FUT2 gene and mutations of Le59, 202, 314 for the FUT3 gene. The only se child was infected by NoV GI, whereas the Se children were indiscriminately infected by GI or GII. This study showed rates of NoV infection in symptomatic and asymptomatic Quilombola children consistent with other studies. However, children under 12 months were seven times more affected than those between 1 and 5 years old. GII.12 was as frequent as GII.4 and GI.1 and GI.4 were described for the first time in Brazil. The evasion of the Interferon response has important implications in Zika virus (ZIKV) disease. Mutations in ZIKV viral protein NS4B, associated with modulation of the interferon (IFN) system, have been linked to increased pathogenicity in animal models. In this study, we unravel ZIKV NS4B as antagonist of the IFN signaling cascade. Firstly, we reported the genomic characterization of NS4B isolated from a strain of the 2016 outbreak, ZIKV Brazil/2016/INMI1, and we predicted its membrane topology. Secondly, we analyzed its phylogenetic correlation with other flaviviruses, finding a high similarity with dengue virus 2 (DEN2) strains; in particular, the highest conservation was found when NS4B was aligned with the IFN inhibitory domain of DEN2 NS4B. Hence, we asked whether ZIKV NS4B was also able to inhibit the IFN signaling cascade, as reported for DEN2 NS4B. Our results showed that ZIKV NS4B was able to strongly inhibit the IFN stimulated response element and the IFN-γ-activated site transcription, blocking IFN-I/-II responses. mRNA expression levels of the IFN stimulated genes ISG15 and OAS1 were also strongly reduced in presence of NS4B. We found that the viral protein was acting by suppressing the STAT1 phosphorylation and consequently blocking the nuclear transport of both STAT1 and STAT2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There has been no systematic study of the immune response of individuals aged over 60 years living in Schistosomiasis mansoni-endemic areas, although senescence is reportedly associated with susceptibility to infection and progressive decline in immune function. We have shown previously, in two endemic areas in Minas Gerais, Brazil, that the frequency of individuals aged over 60 years with chronic schistosomiasis is no longer negligible. Moreover, several elderly individuals who have always lived in these endemic areas stay protected from infection. An important question for studies of ageing and disease control in developing countries is which differences in the immunological profile of these negatively tested (non-infected) individuals can account for their resistance to either infection or reinfection. We show, in the present study, that non-infected (negative) elderly individuals develop innate immune mechanisms of protection that replace the age-associated decline in T cell function. Non-infected elderly individuals from endemic areas of schistosome infection present an increase in the frequency of the natural killer (NK) CD56low subset of NK cells expressing Toll-like receptors (TLR)-1, -2, -3 and -4 as determined by flow cytometry analysis. In addition, the proportion of dendritic cells expressing TLR-1 is elevated as well as the frequency of monocytes expressing TLR-1 and -4. These results suggest that TLR expression by cells of the innate immune system may be related to the negative status of infection in some elderly individuals who are constantly exposed to S. mansoni. Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging arbovirus with recent global expansion. Historically, ZIKV infections with Asian lineages have been associated with mild disease such as rash and fever. However, recent Asian sub-lineages have caused outbreaks in the South Pacific and Latin America with increased prevalence of neurological disorders in infants and adults. Asian sub-lineage differences may partially explain the range of disease severity observed. However, the effect of Asian sub-lineage differences on pathogenesis remains poorly characterized. Current study conducts a head-to-head comparison of three Asian sub-lineages that are representative of the circulating ancestral mild Asian strain (ZIKV-SG), the 2007 epidemic French Polynesian strain (ZIKV-FP), and the 2013 epidemic Brazil strain (ZIKV-Brazil) in adult Cynomolgus macaques. Animals infected intervenously or subcutaneously with either of the three clinical isolates showed sub-lineage-specific differences in viral pathogenesis, early innate immune responses and systemic inflammation. Despite the lack of neurological symptoms in infected animals, the epidemiologically neurotropic ZIKV sub-lineages (ZIKV-Brazil and/or ZIKV-FP) were associated with more sustained viral replication, higher systemic inflammation (i.e. higher levels of TNFα, MCP-1, IL15 and G-CSF) and greater percentage of CD14+ monocytes and dendritic cells in blood. Multidimensional analysis showed clustering of ZIKV-SG away from ZIKV-Brazil and ZIKV-FP, further confirming sub-lineage differences in the measured parameters. These findings highlight greater systemic inflammation and monocyte recruitment as possible risk factors of adult ZIKV disease observed during the 2007 FP and 2013 Brazil epidemics. Future studies should explore the use of anti-inflammatory therapeutics as early treatment to prevent ZIKV-associated disease in adults.

Aim: To evaluate the association between the promoter region of defensin beta 1 (DEFB1) genetic polymorphisms and persistent apical periodontitis (PAP) in Brazilian patients., Methodology: Seventy-three patients with post-treatment PAP (PAP group) and 89 patients with root filled teeth with healed and healthy periradicular tissues (healed group) were included (all teeth had apical periodontitis lesions at the beginning of the treatment). Patients who had undergone at least 1 year of follow-up after root canal treatment were recalled, and their genomic DNA was extracted from saliva. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in DEFB1 at the g. -52G>A (rs1799946) and g. -20G>A (rs11362) positions were analysed using real-time polymerase chain reaction. The chi-squared test was performed, and the odds ratios were calculated using Epi Info 3.5.2. Logistic regression analysis in the codominant model, using the time of follow-up as a variable, was used to evaluate the SNP-SNP interaction. All tests were performed with an established alpha of 0.05 (P = 0.05)., Results: For the rs11362 polymorphism in the codominant and recessive models, patients who carried two copies of the T allele had a significantly lower risk of developing PAP (P = 0.040 and P = 0.031, respectively). For the rs1799946 polymorphism in DEFB1 in the codominant and recessive models, carrying one copy of the T allele significantly increased the risk of developing PAP (P = 0.007 and P = 0.031, respectively). Summary: This study's purpose was to identify polymorphisms (SNP) in the goat β‐defensin 1 gene and to associate these SNPs with traits related to nematodean and protozoan infections in Anglo‐Nubian goats from semiarid region of Brazil. A total of 184 animals were used for DNA extraction, PCR and DNA automatic sequencing. The association analyses included the fixed effects of animal age, bloodline and genotype of the SNP marker in the statistical model. The means of genotypes were compared by the Fisher test (P < 0.05). Twelve polymorphism genotypes were found: two in intron 1, seven in exon 2 and three in 3′ untranslated region. The SNPs of exon 2 were responsible for amino acid substitutions in six genetic codes, and the changes in the 25th and 33rd codes affected the protein function. The SNP 1937 was significantly associated with number of protozoan oocysts, whereas SNP 2001 was associated with degree of anaemia (Famacha©). Polymorphism 2046, in turn, showed a significant association with Famacha© degree and number of protozoan oocysts. SNP 2140 associated with maximum EPG of the animal. In recent years, Asian lineage Zika virus (ZIKV) strains emerged to cause pandemic outbreaks associated with a high rate of congenital ZIKV syndrome (CZVS). The reasons for the enhanced spread and severe disease caused by newly emerging strains are not fully understood. Here we compared viral sequences, viral replication, and innate immune signaling induction of three different ZIKV strains derived from African and Asian lineages and West Nile virus, another flavivirus. We found pronounced differences in activation of innate immune signaling and inhibition of viral replication across ZIKV strains. The newly emerged Asian ZIKV strain Brazil Fortaleza 2015, which is associated with a higher rate of neurodevelopmental disorders like microcephaly, induced much weaker and delayed innate immune signaling in infected cells. However, superinfection studies to assess control of innate immune signaling induced by Sendai virus argue against an active block of IRF3 activation by the Brazilian strain of ZIKV and rather suggest an evasion of detection by host cell pattern recognition receptors. Compared to the Asian strain FSS13025 isolated in Cambodia, both ZIKV Uganda MR766 and ZIKV Brazil Fortaleza appear less sensitive to the interferon-induced antiviral response. ZIKV infection studies of cells lacking the different RIG-I-like receptors identified RIG-I as the major cytosolic pattern recognition receptor for detection of ZIKV. IMPORTANCE Zika Virus (ZIKV), discovered in 1947, is divided into African and Asian lineages. Pandemic outbreaks caused by currently emerging Asian lineage strains are accompanied by high rates of neurological disorders and exemplify the global health burden associated with this virus. Here we compared virological and innate immunological aspects of two ZIKV strains from the Asian lineage, an emerging Brazilian strain and a less-pathogenic Cambodian strain, and the prototypic African lineage ZIKV strain from Uganda. Compared to the replication of other ZIKV strains, the replication of ZIKV Brazil was less sensitive to the antiviral actions of interferon (IFN), while infection with this strain induced weaker and delayed innate immune responses in vitro Our data suggest that ZIKV Brazil directs a passive strategy of innate immune evasion that is reminiscent of a stealth virus. Background and Aims: The inflammatory response in preterm parturition is regulated by the innate immune system. Toll-like receptors (TLR)-2 and TLR-4 are innate immune receptors that recognize the microorganisms most frequently involved in amniotic cavity infections, which are associated with activating the inflammatory response at the maternal-fetal interface during preterm labor. This study aimed to evaluate the expression of TLR-2 and TLR-4 in maternal neutrophils in preterm labor., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Obstetrics Care Unit of Botucatu Medical School, UNESP, Brazil. The preterm group was composed of 20 pregnant women who presented preterm labor and preterm delivery. The control group was composed of 20 nonlaboring pregnant women matched to the preterm group by gestational age. Neutrophils were isolated from peripheral blood and TLR expressions were performed by real-time polymerase chain reaction and flow cytometry., Results: Gene expressions of TLR-2 and TLR-4 in neutrophils from the preterm group were statistically higher than expressions in neutrophils from the matched control group. The percentage of TLR-4+ neutrophils was higher in the preterm group than the matched control group, while the percentage of TLR-2+ neutrophils did not differ between groups., Conclusion: TLR-4 expression in maternal neutrophils is associated with spontaneous preterm labor., (© 2017 S. Polymorphisms in innate immunity genes are known to be involved in the multifactorial susceptibility to Mycobacterium leprae infection. M. leprae can downregulate IL-1β secretion escaping monocyte digestion. The intracellular receptors NLRPs (NACHT, LRR and PYD domains-containing proteins) sense pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) activating caspase-1 and IL-1β secretion in the context of inflammasome. Considering the possible role of inflammasome in the immune response against M. leprae, known single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in two NLRP genes, NLRP1 and NLRP3, were analyzed in Brazilian leprosy patients. Disease-associated SNPs (5 in NLRP1 and 2 in NLRP3), previously associated to infections and to immunologic disorders, were genotyped in 467 leprosy patients (327 multibacillary, MB; 96 paucibacillary, PB) and in 380 healthy controls (HC) from the state of Sao Paulo (Brazil), and in 183 patients (147MB; 64PB) and 186 HC from Mato Grosso (Brazil). Logistic regression analysis was performed considering susceptibility to leprosy di per se (leprosy versus HC) and clinical form (MB versus PB), adjusting for gender and ethnicity. Whereas none of the considered SNPs were statistically associated with leprosy, the NLRP1 combined haplotype rs2137722/G-rs12150220/T-rs2670660/G resulted significantly more frequent in patients than in HC as well as in PB than in MB. While both associations were lost after correction for gender and ethnicity, the NLRP1 combined haplotype rs2137722/G-rs12150220/A-rs2670660/G resulted strongly associated to PB. NLRP1 might be involved in the susceptibility to leprosy with particular emphasis for PB clinical form. Although preliminary, this is the first report linking NLRPs and inflammasome with leprosy: replication studies as well as functional assays are envisaged to deeper investigate the role of NLRP1 in M. leprae infection. Interestingly, NLRP1 SNPs were previously associated to susceptibility to Crohn disease, suggesting that NLRP1 could be a new modifier gene in common between leprosy and Crohn disease., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Variations in genes involved in the immune response pathways may influence the interaction between viruses (such as Human T-lymphotropic virus, HTLV-1) and the host. The mannose binding lectin (MBL) and its associated serine protease type 2 (MASP-2) promote the activation of the lectin pathway of the complement system. As the interaction of complement system with HTLV-1 is not well understood, the MBL2 promoter/exon 1 polymorphisms and a MASP2 missense polymorphism were examined in a Northeast Brazilian population, looking for a possible relationship between these variations and the susceptibility to HTLV-1 infection. The present study describes an association between a polymorphism in the MASP2 gene and susceptibility to HTLV-1 infection, and provides further evidence of an association between the MBL2 gene and HTLV-1 infection.
