To evaluate the admission of children aged 0 to 5 years due to respiratory infections at a major hospital in the Southern region of the city of São Paulo. Methods: A total of 4,240 clinical records of children hospitalized and diagnosed with pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, bronchiolitis and bronchitis were evaluated for the 2008-2009 period, based on age, gender and year season. Results: Out of this total of children aged 0 to 60-months, 139 (3.2%) presented with pneumonia, with a slight predominance in female babies, and 73.4% occurred between 12 and 60 months (102 cases), particularly during the winter. No significant difference was found as to gender in bronchopneumonia. Age range and year seasons showed to be significant. As regards to bronchiolitis, there was a slight increase in male babies (253 cases) aged less than 12 months and in the autumn season. A total of 182 (4.3%) presented with bronchitis, mainly boys (101 cases) in children aged 12 to 60 months, predominantly during autumn/summer seasons. Conclusion: The assessment of admissions of children aged 0 to 5 years due to respiratory infections at a major hospital at the Southern region of the city of São Paulo, in the 2008-2009 period, showed that respiratory diseases affect age groups, and gender in a different way occurring in specific periods of the year. \Objectives: to investigate the impact of the consumption of "multimixture' (a bran-based cereal mixture) on the nutritional status of children at risk of malnutrition. Methods: a community trial involving children (6 to 60 months) from a slum area in the city of Maceió, State of Alagoas, Brazil, randomly assigned to the Control Group (n=60) or to the "multimixture" Group (n=48). The supplement consisted of two tablespoons of "multimixture" per day. Anthropometric measure- ments were taken before and after the experimental phase (10 months). The incidence of health problems was investigated on a biweekly basis. Food consump- tion was assessed by way of 24 hour dietary recall (on three alternate days). Hemoglobin (Hemo Cue®) and serum retinol (HPLC) were determined at the end of the experimental phase. The resulting measurements for the two groups were compared using parametric or non-parametric statistics in according with the situation, Differences were considerate as sign ifica- tive statistically when p< 0.05. Results: no differences were observed (p>O.O5) between the results obtained from anthropometric measurements and dietary intake, between levels of hemoglobin and serum retinol or in the incidence of diarrhea, vomiting or fever. Objective: To characterize and compare clinical, epidemiological, and laboratory aspects of infants with acute lower respiratory infection (ALRI) associated with the detection of adenovirus (ADV) or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)., Methods: A preliminary respiratory infection surveillance study collected samples of nasopharyngeal aspirate (NPA) for viral research, linked to the completion of a standard protocol, from children younger than two years admitted to a university hospital with ALRI, between March of 2008 and August of 2011. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used for eight viruses: ADV, RSV, metapneumovirus, Parainfluenza 1, 2, and 3, and Influenza A and B. Cases with NPA collected during the first 24 hours of admission, negative results of blood culture, and exclusive detection of ADV (Gadv group) or RSV (Grsv group) were selected for comparisons., Results: The preliminary study included collection of 1,121 samples of NPA, 813 collected in the first 24 hours of admission, of which 50.3% were positive for at least one virus; RSV was identified in 27.3% of cases surveyed, and ADV was identified in 15.8%. Among the aspects analyzed in the Gadv (n = 58) and Grsv (n = 134) groups, the following are noteworthy: the higher mean age, more frequent prescription of antibiotics, and the highest median of total white blood cell count and C-reactive protein values in Gadv., Conclusions: PCR can detect persistent/latent forms of ADV, an aspect to be considered when interpreting results.
