Achyrocline satureioides, popularly called "marcela" in Brazil, is used in traditional medicine in South America. A. satureioides, inflorescences are used for many conditions, including to minimize the Sars-Cov-2 symptoms. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the toxicity profile of A. satureioides aqueous extract (ASAE), using the Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) alternative model. Survival, reproduction, development, and transgenerational assays were performed. The effects of ASAE were investigated under conditions of thermal stress and presence of oxidant hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). In addition, C. elegans strains containing high antioxidant enzyme levels and elevated lineages of daf-16, skn-1 and daf-2 regulatory pathways were examined. The ASAE LC50 value was found to be 77.3 ± 4 mg/ml. The concentration of ASAE 10 mg/ml (frequently used in humans) did not exhibit a significant reduction in worm survival at either the L1 or L4 stage, after 24 or 72 hr treatment. ASAE did not markedly alter the body area. In N2 strain, ASAE (10 or 25 mg/ml) reversed the damage initiated by H2O2. In addition, ASAE protected the damage produced by H2O2 in strains containing significant levels of sod-3, gst-4 and ctl − 1,2,3, suggesting modulation in these antioxidant systems by this plant extract. ASAE exposure activated daf-16 and skn-1 stress response transcriptional pathways independently of daf-2, even under extreme stress. Data suggest that ASAE, at the concentrations tested in C. elegans, exhibits a reliable toxicity profile, which may contribute to consideration for safe use in humans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To compare the color change, the risk and intensity of tooth sensitivity (TS), and gingival irritation (GI) of at‐home bleaching applied on the buccal surface only or the buccal and lingual surfaces. Materials and Methods: Sixty patients with canines A2 or darker were selected and their superior arches were randomized in two groups: at‐home bleaching on the buccal‐only or on the buccal and lingual surfaces, with 7.5% hydrogen peroxide, for 1 h daily/2 weeks. The color change was evaluated at baseline, 7, 14 days, and 1 month after bleaching using shade guides scales (ΔSGU) and a spectrophotometer (ΔEAB, ΔE00, and ΔWID). Risk and intensity of TS and GI were recorded daily using visual analogic scale (0–10). Patient satisfaction was evaluated with the orofacial esthetics. Paired t‐test, McNemar's, and Wilcoxon signed‐rank test were used for data analysis (α = 5%). Results: Neither the color change nor the risk/intensity of TS was statistically different between groups (p > 0.05). Patient satisfaction increased after bleaching for both groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The addition of one contact surface does not result in an increased whitening degree compared to bleaching applied solely on the buccal surface. Clinical Significance: Understanding the influence of surfaces interacting with the bleaching agent is crucial for comprehending the bleaching mechanism and avoiding unnecessary material expenses. Objective: To evaluate the penetration of hydrogen peroxide (HP) into the pulp chamber and the color change of different bleaching varnishes in low concentrations used for at‐home bleaching. Materials and Methods: Ninety healthy premolars were used, randomly distributed into nine groups (n = 10) according to bleaching varnish (PL, PolaLuminate; VS, VivaStyle Paint On Plus; CA, Cavex Bite&White whitening pen and; AW AlignerWhite) and time (10 and 30 min), and a control group (no bleaching). The penetration of HP was evaluated by UV–Vis spectroscopy. To evaluate the color change (ΔEab, ΔE00, ΔWID) a digital spectrophotometer was used (α = 0.05). Results: The AW group in 10 min and the control group showed similar and lower HP penetration in the pulp chamber when compared to the other groups (p = 0.003). Increasing the application time to 30 minutes elevated the amount of HP inside the pulp chamber for all groups (p = 0.003), except for PL (p > 0.05). When applied for 30 min all bleaching varnishes showed higher color change (ΔWID) when compared to 10 min (p = 0.04). Conclusions: For all bleaching varnishes evaluated, PolaLuminate applied for 30 min showed lower penetration into the pulp chamber and higher bleaching effects. Measurements of hydroperoxides help improve our understanding of atmospheric oxidation processes. Here, we introduce an instrument setup designed for airborne hydroperoxide measurements. The HYdrogen Peroxide and Higher Organic Peroxides (HYPHOP) monitor has been deployed on the German High-Altitude and Long-range Observatory (HALO) aircraft and is based on dual-enzyme fluorescence spectroscopy, enabling measurements up to an ambient pressure of approximately 150 hPa pressure altitude (13.5–14 km). We characterized the measurement method and data acquisition of HYPHOP with special emphasis on potential sources of interference impacting instrument uncertainty. Physically derived interference was examined based on a dedicated test flight to investigate potential measurement inconsistencies arising from the dynamic movement patterns of the aircraft. During the test flight, the hydroperoxide monitor was operated in the background air sampling mode with purified air by scrubbing atmospheric trace gases, to investigate the instrument stability and potential parameters that might affect the measurements. We show that technical and physical challenges during flight maneuvers do not critically impact the instrument performance and the absolute measurements of hydroperoxide levels. Dynamic processes such as convective transport in the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) are well-resolved as shown in the overview of a recent measurement campaign, Chemistry of the Atmosphere: Field Experiment in Brazil, in December 2022–January 2023 (CAFE-Brazil). The instrument precision based on the measurement results during CAFE-Brazil for hydrogen peroxide and the sum of organic hydroperoxides is estimated to be 6.4 % (at 5.7 ppbv) and 3.6 % (at 5.8 ppbv), respectively, and the corresponding detection limits 20 and 19 pptv for a data acquisition frequency of 1 Hz. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the foliar application of hydrogen peroxide on the attenuation of salt stress on the growth, photochemical efficiency, production and water use efficiency of 'All Big' bell pepper plants. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions in Campina Grande, PB, Brazil. Treatments were distributed in a randomized block design, in a 5 × 5 factorial scheme, corresponding to five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (0.8, 1.2, 2.0, 2.6 and 3.2 dS m−1) and five concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 μM), with three replicates. Foliar application of hydrogen peroxide at concentration of 15 μM attenuated the deleterious effects of salt stress on photochemical efficiency, biomass accumulation and production components of bell pepper plants irrigated using water with an electrical conductivity of up to 3.2 dS m−1. Foliar spraying of hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of 60 μM intensified the effects of salt stress. The 'All Big' bell pepper was classified as moderately sensitive to salt stress, with an irrigation water salinity threshold of 1.43 dS m−1 and a unit decrease of 8.25% above this salinity level. The objective of this work was to assess the nutritional status of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) plants grown under application of macronutrients, in a Typic Hapludult. The experiment was conducted in Cruz das Almas, BA, Brazil, in a greenhouse. The treatments were based on a Baconian matrix statistical arrangement, in which one of the nutrients is supplied in different quantities, whereas the other nutrients are maintained at the reference rates. Six nutrients, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sulfur (S) were evaluated at three different rates. Two additional treatments were used (reference rates; and without nutrient applications), totaling 20 treatments. A completely randomized experimental design with five replications was used, totaling 100 experimental units. Plant material was collected 50 days after treatment applications and dried in an oven for 72 hours. Approximately 0.1 g of dry weight of leaves, stems, and roots were subjected to acid digestion in a mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The digested material was diluted in 100 mL of distilled water to obtain the extract for nutritional diagnosis. The optimal maximum N and P accumulations in basil leaves for high plant performances were 51 and 3.0 g kg-1, respectively. The estimated rates for each nutrient to provide the optimal total N accumulation in basil plants were: N = 235.61, P = 91.27, K = 175, S = 41.98 (mg dm-3), Ca = 0.97, and Mg = 0.36 (cmolc dm-3). Smuggled cigarettes are seized around the world, and a correct destination is needed for this material. In this context, the Federal Revenue of Brazil (RFB) has created Ordinance n°59 of 2019 on the destination of contraband cargo seizures, to which this manuscript aims to propose a use with greater added value. The influence of two factors on the flexural properties of composite samples are studied as follows: i) the influence of prior hydrogen peroxide treatment executed on the cigarette butts (CBs), tested in composite samples made with 50% Polypropylene (PP) and 50% CBs in wt%; and ii) the influence of moisture on composites composed of 60% PP and 40% CBs in wt%, after up to 72 h immersed in water. The fiber treatment has not caused significant reduction of flexural properties in the produced composites, and all composite samples with moisture have showed greater flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (FM) than the dry sample. However, these bending properties can decrease as the moisture increases, so further studies are encouraged. It is demonstrated that these composites are feasible to produce, may be used in moist environments in flexural stresses and allow for fiber hydrogen peroxide treatment without significant reduction in flexural properties. Hydroponic cultivation of mini watermelon with saline waters can be made possible through the use of substances that can mitigate the deleterious effects of salt stress. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the growth and postharvest quality of mini watermelon as a function of the salinity levels of the nutrient solution and hydrogen peroxide in a hydroponic system. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in Pombal, PB, Brazil, using a Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) hydroponic system. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 4 × 4 factorial scheme, corresponding to four levels of electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution (ECns (2.1, 3.1, 4.1, and 5.1 dS m−1)) and four concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2 (0, 20, 40, and 60 μM)), with 5 replicates. Foliar spraying of hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of 20 μM improved the postharvest quality of fruits of 'Sugar Baby' mini watermelon cultivated in a hydroponic system. Hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of 20 μM associated with ECns of 3.1 dS m−1 promoted the highest values of pH, flavonoids, anthocyanins, reducing sugars, ascorbic acid, and leaf and stem dry mass of mini watermelon. Hydrogen peroxide concentration of 20 μM also promoted an increase in the total soluble solid contents in plants cultivated with ECns of up to 2.6 dS m−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In an estuary of a neotropical region located in Brazil, Urochloa arrecta occurs only in the area of freshwater. Nonetheless, information about the capacity of this population to invade areas considered inhospitable, i.e., saltwater, is scarce. In this sense, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of intermediate (20 ppt) and high (30 ppt) salinity on individuals from a population of U. arrecta located in the freshwater region of an estuarine ecosystem. Analyses of plant biomass, nitrogen, phosphorus, malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide content were evaluated as possible indicators of tolerance to salt stress. Our results showed that salinity reduced growth and increased oxidative stress. However, under conditions of intermediate salinity, U. arrecta individuals showed a biomass gain greater than 60%, MDA content similar to that in freshwater, and higher nitrogen absorption and assimilation. We conclude that U. arrecta probably presents physiological adjustments that allow its survival at intermediate salinity. Thus, the ability of this species to expand in this area alerts to the importance of studies that seek to adopt policies for the control or management of the species in saline ecosystems. Adopting strategies to mitigate the negative effects of salt excess in irrigation water is essential to maintain production systems, especially in semi-arid regions. From this perspective, this study aimed to evaluate the gas exchange and photosynthetic pigments of hydroponic bell pepper grown under different water combinations (brackish water and rainwater) and foliar application of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The study was conducted in a protected environment at the Agricultural Engineering Academic Unit of the Federal University of Campina Grande, Brazil. The experiment was set up in a completely randomized design with 12 treatments and a 4 x 3 factorial arrangement with five replications, each consisting of four brackish water and rainwater combinations (10%/90%; 20%/80%; 30%/70%;40%/60%) and three H2O2 concentrations: 0.0 (control), 7.5 µM, and 15 µM supplied via foliar application every seven days starting 42 days after sowing (DAS). The application of 15.0 µM of H2O2 in bell pepper plants grown with the nutrient solution containing the 30%/70% and 40%/60% combinations between brackish water and rainwater increased photosynthesis 24 days after sowing and increased stress 61 days after sowing. After 61 DAS, the highest gs and E values of bell pepper grown with the nutrient solution at the electrical conductivity of 2.72 dS m-1 (10%/90%) were obtained by applying 15.0 µM of H2O2. The contents of chlorophyll "a", "b", total chlorophyll, and carotenoids of bell pepper plants showed deleterious effects caused by the salinity of the nutrient solution, mitigated by the exogenous application of 15 µM hydrogen peroxide. The effect of hydrogen peroxide has been very studied, but little is known on its effect on seed germination andinitial growth of melon trees under salt stress. In this context, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effectof hydrogen peroxide as a mitigator of salt stress on melon seed germination. The experiment was conductedin the Laboratory of Seeds and Seedlings of the Federal University of Campina Grande, in Pombal, PB, Brazil. Acompletely randomized design was used, in a 4×6 factorial arrangement consisting of times of seed imbibitionin H2O2 (0, 8, 16, and 24 hours) and irrigation water salinity levels (0.3, 1.2, 2.1, 3.0, 3.9, and 4.8 dS m-1), with fourreplications. Melon seeds of the commercial variety Imperial-45 were used. The H2O2 solution was prepared from a 1 mmol L-1 H2O2 solution, which was diluted to reach the concentration of 10 μmol L-1. The seeds wereplaced in a beaker and subjected to imbibition with 100 ml of the solution for the different times studied. Thevariables evaluated were: germination percentage, first germination counting, germination speed index, meangermination speed, mean germination time, and radicle length. The application of H2O2 solution to seeds for 16hours mitigates the negative effects caused by salt stresses by up to 2.2 dS m-1; however, the application of H2O2solution for 24 hours is harmful to the germination process of melon seeds. The objective of this split-mouth clinical study was to compare a combination of in-office and at-home dental bleaching with at-home bleaching alone. Two applications of inoffice bleaching were performed, with one appointment per week, using 38% hydrogen peroxide. At-home bleaching was performed with or without in-office bleaching using 10% carbamide peroxide in a custom-made tray every night for 2 weeks. The factor studied was the bleaching technique on two levels: Technique 1 (in-office bleaching combined with home bleaching) and Technique 2 (home bleaching only). The response variables were color change, dental sensitivity, morphology, and surface roughness. The maxillary right and left hemiarches of the participants were submitted to in-office placebo treatment and in-office bleaching, respectively (Phase 1), and at-home bleaching (Phase 2) treatment was performed on both hemiarches, characterizing a split-mouth design. Enamel surface changes and roughness were analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical interferometry (IFM) using epoxy replicas. No statistically significant differences were observed between the bleaching techniques for either the visual or the digital analyses. There was a significant difference in dental sensitivity when both dental bleaching techniques were used, with in-office bleaching producing the highest levels o f dental sensitivity after the baseline. Microscopic analysis of the morphology and roughness of the enamel surface showed no significant changes between the bleaching techniques. The two techniques produced similar results in color change, and the combination technique produced the highest levels of sensitivity. Objective: The present study investigated how a hybrid light source (LED/laser) influences temperature variation on the enamel surfaces during 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) bleaching. Effects on the whitening effectiveness and tooth sensitivity were analyzed. Method and Materials: Twenty-two volunteers were randomly assigned to two different treatments in a split-mouth experimental model: group 1 (control), 35% HP; group 2 (experimental), 35% HP + LED/laser. Color evaluation was performed before treatment, and 7 and 14 days after completion of bleaching, using a color shade scale. Tooth sensitivity was assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS; before, immediately, and 24 hours after bleaching). During the bleaching treatment, thermocouple channels positioned on the tooth surfaces recorded the temperature. Data on color and temperature changes were subjected to statistical analysis (α = 5%). Tooth sensitivity data were evaluated descriptively. Results: Groups 1 and 2 showed mean temperatures (± standard deviation) of 30.7 ± 1.2°C and 34.1 ± 1.3°C, respectively. It was found that there were statistically significant differences between the groups, with group 2 showing higher mean variation [P < .0001). The highest temperature variation occurred for group 2, with an increase of 5.3°C at the enamel surface. The color change results showed no differences in bleaching between the two treatment groups (P = .177). The variation of the average temperature during the treatments was not statistically associated with color variation (P = .079). Immediately after bleaching, it was found that 36.4% of the subjects in group 2 had mild to moderate sensitivity. In group 1, 45.5% showed moderate sensitivity. In both groups, the sensitivity ceased within 24 hours. Conclusion: Hybrid light source (LED/laser) influences temperature variation on the enamel surface during 35% HP bleaching and is not related to greater tooth sensitivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Artificial hybridization in Phaseolus lunatus L. is still little used in genetic improvement programs in Brazil due to the low establishment percentages. This work aimed to evaluate pollen viability and stigma receptivity in different Lima bean genotypes throughout the day. Accessions 'Roxinha -MT' and 'Cana Longa-PB' were used in the experiment. Five flower buds were collected from each genotype at 6:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. The stigma receptivity was determined using 3% hydrogen peroxide, whereas pollen viability was determined with 2% acetocarmine colouration. The genotype and time factors acted independently on the percentage of viable and non-viable pollen grains and stigma receptivity. The genotype 'Roxinha' presented 88.54% viable pollen grains, a value 84.27% higher than that of the 'Cana Longa' genotype. This percentage varied as a function of time, with the highest means observed at 6:00 a.m. Stigma receptivity was influenced only by the time of the day, undergoing a great reduction in receptivity, from 88% in the early morning to slightly more than 40% around noon. These results indicate that 6:00 a.m. is the most suitable time to perform artificial crosses in Lima bean plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective was to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant, genotoxic, antigenotoxic, and antineoplastic activities of apitoxin produced by the bee Apis mellifera. The antioxidant activity of the apitoxin solution was evaluated using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhydrazyl) method. Genotoxic potential of apitoxin was analyzed by comparing the mean DNA damage indices (idDNA) of L929 strain fibroblasts exposed to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2 - genotoxic substance), distilled water, or apitoxin. The antigenotoxic effect of apitoxin was analyzed by assessing the percentage decrease in H2O2-induced genotoxicity in L929 fibroblasts co-treated with three concentrations of the aqueous apitoxin solution and subjected to comet assay. In vitro antineoplastic activity in human tumor cell lines of prostate adenocarcinoma (PC3), hepatocellular carcinoma (HEPGE2), melanoma (MAD-MB435), and astrocytoma (SNB19), were verified by MTT [3-(4) bromide colorimetric method, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) -2,5-diphenyltetrazolium]. Apitoxin had no genotoxic effect on L929 cells at concentrations of 30, 10, and 5 µg/mL after 24 hours of exposure. This effect was only evident at 50 µg/mL. Apitoxin promoted a significant reduction in DNA damage index (idDNA) at all concentrations tested. At 30 µg/mL, apitoxin attenuated the genotoxic effects induced by H2O2. Apitoxin also demonstrated in vitro antineoplastic potential, since the cytotoxic effect was observed at concentrations of 50 µg/mL and 25 µg/mL, with significant reduction in viability percentage of PC3 tumor cell lines, HEPGE2, MAD-MB435, and SNB19. The high antioxidant activity associated with the absence of genotoxic effect and the genoprotective and antineoplastic effect demonstrated by apitoxin here provide indications of apitoxin's therapeutic potential. The Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) is categorized as vulnerable in the Brazilian list of endangered animals, and its populations suffer from several anthropological threats. In this study, we analyzed the presence of macro, meso, and microplastics (MPs) in Guiana dolphins (n = 12) in Brazil Southeastern coast by analysing their gastrointestinal tract. The MP extractions were carried out with H 2 O 2 (35 %) to remove organic matter. Four specimens ingested meso and macroplastics, including an item of polypropylene of 19.22 cm that was produced about 943 km from the place in which the animal was found stranded. All the specimens analyzed had fragment-type microplastics in their intestines. Blue was the prevailing color, followed by black, green, and red. Species of Tillandsia L. are widely distributed in Brazilian ecosystems, and in the state of Bahia they can be found in the Atlantic Forest, Caatinga and Cerrado biomes. Studying the reproductive aspects of these species can support their management and conservation. In particular, stigma morphology is a conserved trait of Bromeliaceae and stigma receptivity can influence the success of pollination. The objective of this study was to characterize the morphoanatomy and classify the stigma types of Tillandsia species by means of light and scanning electron microscopy, as well as to evaluate the stigma receptivity by different methods and at three floral development stages. A total of 21 Tillandsia species found in Bahia were evaluated. The stigma receptivity was assessed with hydrogen peroxide (3%) and a solution of α‐naphthyl acetate. Four stigma types were observed: conduplicate‐spiral for the species of the Tillandsia subgen. Tillandsia, simple‐erect for species of T. subgen. Diaphoranthema, and simple‐truncate for the species of T. subgen. Phytarrhiza. The species of the T. subgen. Anoplophytum had three morphological types, conduplicate‐spiral, conduplicate‐patent and simple‐erect. All the species had trifid stigmas, monostratified epidermis, numerous idioblasts containing raphides in the fundamental parenchyma and an individual vascular bundle for each carpel. In all the species studied by the two methods of stigma receptivity the highest enzyme activity was observed during anthesis. The morphoanatomy of the stigma and style provides important information for the taxonomy of Tillandsia and the data on stigma receptivity can support studies of the reproduction and conservation of these species. Butiá (Butia eriospatha) is a fruit of a palm tree belonging to the family Arecaceae, native to South America. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant potential of butiá extract using Caenorhabditis elegans as animal model. Initially, we performed survival experiments, reproduction, resistance to oxidative stress (post or pre‐treatment with paraquat or hydrogen peroxide), longevity, superoxide dismutase, and catalase GFP reporters' expression. We observed that butiá extract did not affect the worms' survival. Similarly, egg laying also showed no significant difference between treatments. None of the extract concentrations tested was able to significantly protect or reverse paraquat‐induced oxidative stress. However, they were able to reverse the oxidative damage induced by hydrogen peroxide. In addition, butiá extract increased C. elegans lifespan under stress and not per se. Our results demonstrate that the Butiá is able to extend the lifespan of the nematode C. elegans and that this effect may be mediated by an induced resistance to oxidative stress. Practical applications: The practical applications of this research are to expand and bring scientific knowledge to the population about the benefits of the consumption of this native fruit from the southern region of Brazil. Many fruits and other plant foods are consumed and spread with benefits without proper scientific proof of these benefits. This fruit is widely cultivated and its production and consumption can be expanded from these results. Still, we point out that this is the first time that the benefits of this fruit are studied. This paper reports a laboratory study of an accelerated reoxygenation treatment of polluted water bodies, using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2): conditions such as the discharge of waters from domestic sewers or polluted storm-water resulting from intense rainfall that lead to a reduction in the level of dissolved oxygen (DO). We studied the water from rivers that make up the basin of the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas (LRF) lagoon, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When intense rainfall coincides with discharge from sewers, the polluted water may reach LRF. This has in the past led to episodes of critical deficit in DO in the waters of the lagoon, resulting in fish kill. To study this, we carried out experiments with water samples taken from the river feeding the lagoon. To study the accelerated reoxygenation of the river waters, we used different doses of H2O2. We concluded that the addition of H2O2 to the waters of the river during polluting events can prevent the level of DO in the lagoon going below a critical value. This treatment resulted in an immediate increase in DO that lasted hours and in the sustainability of the DO above the legal limit 5.0 mg L−1, enough to avoid fish kill. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work investigates the effect of public policies related to vehicle emissions on the lower tropospheric concentrations of H 2 O 2 in a typical midsized city in tropical Brazil. The concentrations of H 2 O 2 , SO 4 2− , and NO 3 − in rainwater samples were determined from 2014 to 2017 in the municipality of Ribeirão Preto in São Paulo State. A fluorometric method, based on the formation of a highly fluorescent product (2′,7′-dichlorofluorescein, DCF), was adapted and optimized for the measurement of H 2 O 2 in natural water samples including seawater. The method was highly specific, accurate and sensitive (LOD = 2 nmol L −1 ). Its main advantage compared to others, was that the fluorophore remained stable for at least 48 h, offering a longer time interval in which to perform the analysis and therefore facilitating fieldwork. Concentrations of H 2 O 2 in rainwater ranged from 5.8 to 96 μmol L −1 , with VWM of 28.6 ± 1.4 μmol L −1 (n = 77). Solar radiation appeared to have a greater impact on production than on consumption of H 2 O 2 . The annual VWM concentrations of H 2 O 2 in rainwater were negatively correlated with sulfate (at pH < 5) and nitrate, suggesting that national policies designed to reduce vehicle emissions of SO 2 and NO x resulted in increased atmospheric H 2 O 2 concentrations, impacting the oxidative capacity of the lower troposphere. Biomass burning emissions and photochemical reactions were also found to be important factors affecting the concentration of H 2 O 2 in the atmosphere. This work expands the current records available for the Southern Hemisphere, where there is a considerable paucity of information regarding temporal production and loss of atmospheric H 2 O 2 . Background: Topical application of calcium-containing bioactive desensitizers (CBs) has been used to minimize bleaching-induced tooth sensitivity (TS). This study answered the research question "Is the risk of TS lower when CBs are used with dental bleaching in adults compared with bleaching without desensitizers?", Types of Studies Reviewed: The authors included randomized clinical trials comparing topical CB application with a placebo or no intervention during bleaching. Searches for eligible articles were performed in MEDLINE via PubMed, Cochrane Library, Brazilian Library in Dentistry, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and gray literature without language and date restrictions and updated in September 2022. The risk of bias was evaluated using Risk of Bias Version 2.0. The authors conducted meta-analyses with the random-effects model. The authors assessed heterogeneity with the Cochrane Q test, I 2 statistics, and prediction interval. The authors used the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach to assess the certainty of the evidence., Results: After database screening, 22 studies remained, with most at high risk of bias. No difference in the risk of TS was detected (risk ratio, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.90 to 1.01; P = .08, low certainty). In a visual analog scale, the intensity of TS (mean difference, -0.98; 95% CI, -1.36 to -0.60; P < .0001, very low certainty) was lower for the CB group. Purpose: Our study aimed to evaluate whether obesity induced by cafeteria diet changes the neutrophil effector/inflammatory function and whether treatment with green tea extract (GT) can improve neutrophil function. Methods: Male Wistar rats were treated with GT by gavage (12 weeks/5 days/week; 500 mg/kg of body weight), and obesity was induced by cafeteria diet (8 weeks). Neutrophils were obtained from the peritoneal cavity (injection of oyster glycogen). The following analyses were performed: phagocytic capacity, chemotaxis, myeloperoxidase activity (MPO), hypochlorous acid (HOCl), superoxide anion (O), hydrogen peroxide (HO), IL-1β, IL-6 and TNFα, mRNA levels of inflammatory genes, calcium mobilisation, activities of antioxidant enzymes, hexokinase and G6PDH. Results: Neutrophils from obese rats showed a significant decrease in migration capacity, HO and HOCl production, MPO activity and O production. Phagocytosis and CD11b mRNA levels were increased, while inflammatory cytokines release remained unmodified. mRNA levels of TLR4 and IκK were enhanced. Treatment of obese rats with GT increased neutrophil migration, MPO activity, HO, HOCl and O production, whereas TNF-α and IL-6 were decreased (versus obese). Similar reductions in TLR4, IκK and CD11b mRNA were observed. Catalase and hexokinase were increased by obesity, while SOD and G6PDH were decreased. Treatment with GT reduced catalase and increased the GSH/GSSG ratio. Conclusion: In response to a cafeteria diet, we found a decreased chemotaxis, HO release, MPO activity and HOCl production. We also showed a significant immunomodulatory effect of GT on the obese condition recovering some of these factors such HO and HOCl production, also reducing the levels of inflammatory cytokines. The immunological mechanisms involved in the development of congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) have yet to be fully clarified. This study aims to assess the immuno-inflammatory profile of mothers and their children who have been diagnosed with CZS. Blood samples, which were confirmed clinically using the plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT), were collected from children with CZS and their mothers (CZS+ group). Samples were also collected from children who did not develop CZS and had a negative PRNT result and from their mothers (CZS- group). The data demonstrated a correlation between the leukocyte profile of CZS+ children and their mothers, more evident in monocytes. Monocytes from mothers of CZS+ children showed low expression of HLA and elevated hydrogen peroxide production. CZS+ children presented standard HLA expression and a higher hydrogen peroxide concentration than CZS- children. Monocyte superoxide dismutase activity remained functional. Moreover, when assessing the monocyte polarization, it was observed that there was no difference in nitrite concentrations; however, there was a decrease in arginase activity in CZS+ children. These data suggest that ZIKV infection induces a maternal immuno-inflammatory background related to the child's inflammatory response after birth, possibly affecting the development and progression of congenital Zika syndrome.

Worldwide, cosmetics (especially eye shadows) are widely consumed and have a great impact on the economy. The aim of this study was to determine the multielement composition, focusing on essential and potentially toxic elements, in cosmetics (eye shadow) exposed to consumption in Brazil. Concentrations of 17 elements (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sr, Ti, V and Zn) were determined in samples (produced in China and Brazil) using a sequential optical emission spectrometer with inductively coupled plasma (ICP OES) after acid digestion, assisted by a closed digester block (6 mL of HNO 3  + 2 mL of H 2 O 2  + 1 mL of Triton ×-100 + 1 mL of ultrapure water). The method was validated by linearity, precision, accuracy, limits of detection (LoD) and quantification (LoQ). The elements were quantified (in µg g -1 ): Al (852-21,900), Ba (3.47-104), Cd (1.70-6.93), Cr (< 8.53-66.6), Cu (< 0.480-14.5), Mn (92.20-1,190), Ni (< 4.23-40.7), Pb (< 2.16-5.06), Sb (1.10-10.5), Sr (0.760-46.0), Ti (32.0-440), V (< 0.85-1.7) and Zn (24.90-2,600). As, Co, Mo and Se in all the investigated samples were found to be below the LoQ values of ICP OES. In this study, regardless of sample compositions and origins (Brazilian or Chinese), high levels of Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Ti, V and Zn were observed, exceeding the recommended maximum tolerable limits, according to Brazilian and global legislations, which may present potential risks to human health and the environment., (© 2022. Numerous anti-inflammatory properties have been attributed to caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), an active component of propolis. NADPH oxidases are multienzymatic complexes involved in many inflammatory diseases. Here, we studied the importance of the CAPE hydrophobicity on cell-free antioxidant capacity, inhibition of the NADPH oxidase and hypochlorous acid production, and release of TNF-α and IL-10 by activated leukocytes. The comparison was made with the related, but less hydrophobic, caffeic and chlorogenic acids. Cell-free studies such as superoxide anion scavenging assay, triene degradation, and anodic peak potential (Epa) measurements showed that the alterations in the hydrophobicity did not provoke significant changes in the oxidation potential and antiradical potency of the tested compounds. However, only CAPE was able to inhibit the production of superoxide anion by activated leukocytes. The inhibition of the NADPH oxidase resulted in the blockage of production of hypochlorous acid. Similarly, CAPE was the more effective inhibitor of the release of TNF-α and IL-10 by Staphylococcus aureus stimulated cells. In conclusion, the presence of the catechol moiety and the higher hydrophobicity were essential for the biological effects. Considering the involvement of NADPH oxidases in the genesis and progression of inflammatory diseases, CAPE should be considered as a promising anti-inflammatory drug. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Higher intakes of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids that are abundant in marine fishes have been long described as a 'good nutritional intervention' with increasing clinical benefits to cardiovascular health, inflammation, mental, and neurodegenerative diseases. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of daily fish oil (FO-10 mg EPA/kg body weight (BW) and 7 mg DHA/kg BW) intake by oral gavage associated with the antioxidant astaxanthin (ASTA-1 mg/kg BW) on the redox metabolism and the functional properties of lymphocytes from rat lymph nodes. Methods: This study was conducted by measurements of lymphocyte proliferation capacity, ROS production [superoxide (O) and hydrogen peroxide (HO)], nitric oxide (NO) generation, intracellular calcium release, oxidative damage to lipids and proteins, activities of major antioxidant enzymes, GSH/GSSG content, and cytokines release. Results: After 45 days of FO + ASTA supplementation, the proliferation capacity of activated T- and B-lymphocytes was significantly diminished followed by lower levels of O, HO and NO production, and increased activities of total/SOD, GR and GPx, and calcium release in cytosol. ASTA was able to prevent oxidative modification in cell structures through the suppression of the oxidative stress condition imposed by FO. l-selectin was increased by FO, and IL-1β was decreased only by ASTA supplementation. Conclusion: We can propose that association of ASTA with FO could be a good strategy to prevent oxidative stress induced by polyunsaturated fatty acids and also to potentiate immuno-modulatory effects of FO. Background: The tooth whitening substances for extrinsic use that are available in Brazil contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Several studies have attributed the appearance of lesions in the enamel morphology, including hypersensitivity, to these substances. Such lesions justify fluoride therapy and application of infrared lasers, among other procedures. However, there is no consensus among researchers regarding the relevance of the severity of lesions detected on the tooth surface. Objectives: The present study was carried out with an aim of evaluating in vitro the effects of the hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide and sodium bicarbonate contained in dentifrice formulations, on human tooth enamel. Materials and Methods: After darkening process in laboratory, human premolars were brushed using dentifrice containing the two whitening substances (Rembrandt - carbamide peroxide and Mentadent - hydrogen peroxide) and the abrasive product (Colgate - sodium bicarbonate). The degree of specimen staining before and after this procedure was determined using spectrophotometry. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to obtain images, which were analyzed to show the nature of the lesions that appeared on the enamel surface. Results: The effectiveness of the whitening caused by hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide and the abrasion caused by bicarbonate were confirmed, given that the treated test pieces returned to their original coloration. Based on SEM, evaluation of the enamel surfaces subjected to the test products showed that different types of morphologic lesions of varying severity appeared. Conclusions: Whitening dentifrice containing hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide produced lesions on the enamel surface such that the greatest sequelae were associated with exposure to hydrogen peroxide. The concentrations of major (Ca, K, Mg, Na and P) and trace elements (Al, Cu and Fe) in soy protein formulations sold in Bahia (Brazil) were determined by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Liquid and powdered soy protein formulation samples, both whole and light, were digested using a conventional heating program on a hot-plate. The powdered samples were prepared according to the label instructions for human consumption. A 5.0-ml aliquot of the soy protein emulsion was transferred to a borosilicate Erlenmeyer and concentrated nitric and sulfuric acid added. After a digestion time of ∼50 min, hydrogen peroxide was added and heating continued to give a final volume of ∼5 ml; the colorless digests were then made up to 15.0 ml with deionised water. Residual acid content was determined by acid-base titration. Good agreement between measured and certified values for all analytes in a non-fat milk powder (NIST SRM 1549) indicated that the method was suitable for major and trace elements determination in soy protein formulations. The efficiency of different methods for the decontamination of glassware used for the analysis of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was tested using reported procedures as well as new ones proposed in this work. A Fenton solution bath (1.0mmolL−1 Fe2+ and 100mmolL−1 H2O2) for 1h or for 30min employing UV irradiation showed to combine simplicity, low cost and high efficiency. Using the optimized cleaning procedure, the DOC for stored UV-irradiated ultra-pure water reached concentrations below the limit of detection (0.19μmolCL−1). Filtered (0.7μm) rain samples maintained the DOC integrity for at least 7 days when stored at 4°C. The volatile organic carbon (VOC) fraction in the rain samples collected at two sites in São Paulo state (Brazil) ranged from 0% to 56% of their total DOC content. Although these high-VOC concentrations may be derived from the large use of ethanol fuel in Brazil, our results showed that when using the high-temperature catalytic oxidation technique, it is essential to measure DOC rather than non-purgeble organic carbon to estimate organic carbon, since rainwater composition can be quite variable, both geographically and temporally. In crops of the sugarcane, the concentrations of molybdenum (Mo) in the leaves are generally lower than 0.3 mg Mo kg-1. These low concentrations have resulted in limitations in the methods and instruments that can be used for these analyses. The objective of this study was to evaluate three different techniques to determine the concentration of Mo in sugarcane leaves sampled in the principal sugarcane-producing areas in Brazil. Two spectrometric techniques were evaluated by using ICP-EAS (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Emission Automated System) and DCP-MEAS (Direct Coupled Plasma-Multiple Emission Automated System) and a colorimetric technique of the reaction between potassium iodide and hydrogen peroxide (KI-H2O2). The techniques ICP-EAS and KI-H2O2 produced results of satisfactory accuracy and precision, whereas the DCP-MEAS consistently overestimated the Mo concentrations in cane leaves. The KI-H2O2 technique showed sensitivity 5 times greater than the ICP-EAS, with minimum detection limits of 0.1 and 0.5 mg Mo kg-1, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microplastics are one of the most widely discussed environmental issues worldwide. Several studies have shown the effect of microplastic exposure on the marine environment; however, studies on freshwater systems are lacking. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of microplastics on hydroponically growing emergent freshwater macrophytes, watermilfoil (sp. roraima) under controlled environmental conditions. Plants were exposed to 0 mg L -1 (control), 0.05 mg L -1 , 0.25 mg L -1 , 1.25 mg L -1 , and 6 mg L -1 of 3-µm polystyrene microspheres for 7 days. The oxidative stress, antioxidant response, pigmentations, Fv/Fm, and growth parameters in the above-water and below-water parts were analyzed separately. Microscopic observations were performed to confirm the tissue absorbance of the microplastics. Exposure to microplastics altered some parameters; however, growth was not affected. The effect of microplastics was not linear with the exposure concentration for most of the parameters and between 1.25 and 6 mg L -1 concentrations. The response trends mostly followed the second-order polynomial distributions. Under the 1.25 mg L -1 exposure, there were significant changes in root length, H 2 O 2 content, catalase activity, anthocyanin content, and Fv/Fm. There were differences in parameters between the above-water and below-water parts, and the responses of the microplastics followed different trends. Raw pyritic waste (RPW) from South Brazilian coal deposits and pure pyritic waste (PPW) were used as catalysts for organic dyes discoloration. Samples were characterized for their chemical, morphological, and structural properties. There was a significant content of Fe and S in both samples from the presence of iron sulfide. The average particle size is 10.9 μm for RPW and 7.4 μm for PPW, demonstrating that the beneficiation process could remove the larger quartz particles, interfered in the distribution, and average particle size. Smaller particle sizes promoted a larger surface area for the PPW. The influence of the pyritic waste in dosage, H 2 O 2 concentration, and pH was evaluated, obtaining discoloration values above 95% for 0.5 g/L of pyritic waste, 2 g/L of H 2 O 2, and pH 4.3 for both pyritic wastes. The degradation kinetics of the Reactive Blue 21 using the raw pyritic waste obtained a dye concentration removal above 93% in 90 min, with an iron release of 5.4 mg/L into the solution. Using PPW, the dye concentration removal was over 92% in 40 min, with the iron release of 15.5 mg/L into the solution. Discoloration rate for the PPW sample is 7 times greater than the rate obtained for RPW, indicating a faster decay rate for the purified sample. A decrease in discoloration efficiency is observed for PPW after 6 cycles of use, due to the higher concentration of iron leached into the medium. This, together with blockages in several countries, has hindered the availability and accessibility of the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE)., Objective: To identify, systematically evaluate and summarize the available scientific evidence on the efficacy, safety, safe use and reuse of PPE for healthcare professionals, for preventing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection., Design and Setting: Systematic review of studies analyzing products for disinfecting and enabling reuse of PPE for coronavirus within the evidence-based health program of a federal university in São Paulo (SP), Brazil., Methods: A systematic search of the relevant literature was conducted in the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Web of Science and LILACS databases, for articles published up to November 30, 2020., Results: Ten studies were selected. These analyzed the use of N95, surgical and cotton masks, face shields, flexible enclosures with plastic covers or polycarbonate intubation boxes and plastic curtains; and also PPE disinfection using several substances., Conclusion: Combined use of a face shield with a N95 mask proved to be superior to other associations for protecting healthcare workers. Some products are useful for disinfecting PPE, such as 70% ethanol, 0.1% sodium hypochlorite and a mixture of quaternary ammonium and H2O2, and hydrogen peroxide. This study investigated the vitamin C content, total phenolic compounds (TPC), and the potential bioactivities (antioxidant, antiproliferative, antibacterial activities, and inhibition capacity against N-nitrosation) of seven neglected and underutilized species (NUS): culantro (Eryngium foetidum), false roselle (Hibiscus acetosella), roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa), tree basil (Ocimum gratissimum), Barbados Gooseberry (Pereskia aculeata), purslane (Portulaca oleracea), and tannia (Xanthosoma sagittifolium). Phenolic-rich extracts were obtained by a sequential optimization strategy (Plackett-Burman and Central Composite Design). O. gratissimum presented the highest TPC and X. sagittifolium the greater total vitamin C content. Overall, the plant extracts presented promising bioactive capacities, as scavenging capacity against HOCl, H 2 O 2 and ROO • induced oxidation. P. oleracea demonstrated the highest cytostatic effect against ovarian and kidney tumor cells. O. gratissimum effectively inhibited S. Choleraesuis growth. Maximum inhibition on n-nitrosation was showed by O. gratissimum and E. foetidum.
