The article explores the preference of farmers in southeast Brazil on shade trees in the cocoa-cabruca or cabruca agroforestry system, particularly its impact on utilitarian, anthropocentric and instrumental values related to biodiversity. Topics discussed include farmers' view on shade levels including the value of shading in cocoa cultivation and findings from the authors' survey of local farmers including their most preferred species and species with the highest rejection rates.
